Just buy a prepaid one and call up at&t. They can switch your account to the blank sim that comes with the prepaid phone.

OK, she didn't actually consume the phone (she's only 9 pounds) but she did a number on it. I am intrigued by the suggestion of buying a prepaid phone and... upgrading? How exactly does that work?

yeah you can buy any at&t prepaid phone, then just slip your simcard into it and it will work right away with your phone number and minutes.
