Sony has announced today that a new firmware update will arrive for the PS3 later this month. Version 2.20 will add support for Blu-Ray Live (profile 2.0) features such as the ability to download extra content like bonus scenes, ringtones and subtitles. Blu-Ray Live also allows interactive movie-based games to communicate over the internet -- effectively adding online multiplayer support. Other features found in firmware v2.20 include:

"Resume play" will enable PS3 to start playing a BD and DVD video at the point it was stopped, even if the disc had been removed. (BD-J format discs are not supported)
"Audio Output Device" will be a new Remote Play setting, enabling PSP to serve as a remote control for music played through PS3.
PS3's Internet browser will be enhanced: Video files directly linked from a Web page will be able to be streamed, and the browser's view speed will be improved.
DivX and WMV format videos that are larger than 2GB will be playable.
"Mosquito Noise Reduction" will be added as an AV setting in the control panel of the DVD/BD player for improved movie playback. (BD discs recorded with BDMV format are not supported)The update will be released sometime "in late March." In the meantime, now would be a good time to start stocking up on Blu-Ray Live discs. With few other BD-Live compatible players arriving until Summer, the PS3 is once again the best choice of device for Blu-Ray playback. PS3 owners will be able to enjoy these new features months before another player that supports them is released. Pretty good, wouldn't you say?

Resume play sounds nice, as does the enhanced DIVX support (let's hope they get it right this time).

Good news....but not as good as it would be if it was DTS-HD decoding. Hurry up Sony!

I'm wondering if the dl function will mean that if new footage/material for a blu-ray release is ever provided .. like in a new edition of a certain movie for example .. will that be available for dl to a person that has already purchased an older bd version of that movie. If so that would be an incredible feature and a major advantage over standard discs.

Did you happen to see the news that the perpetually right Penton Man (let's not forget about how much his ass gets kissed, however) has confirmed that this is coming for the PS3?

Resume play is coming for the PS3? awesome.

Yeah, I did. I also noticed that he didn't even give the vaguest hint of a timeframe. :)

I do seem to recall him being wrong on quite a few things though--he seems to parrot things he reads or hears from REAL insiders (like talkstr8t, who to my knowledge has NEVER been wrong) and tries to pawn himself of as an insider on that basis. One thing that comes particularly to mind was early last fall, when he said there was an "enhanced" Blu-Ray version of 300 coming before Christmas, with the PiP feature from the HD DVD and a bunch of other new exclusive features. Well here we are in March, and with WB exclusive no less, and still not a peep.

But I'll hope he's right this time. :)

Amen to that, the 360 already does this and it's a feature that I miss on the PS3. Thank God I can watch part of an episode of Heroes and not have to remember what scene's I've already seen.
