View Full Version : PS3 HDMI to DVI? [Use PS3 101 Thread]

Well, I decided that in the next month or so, I will finally get a PS3. Trouble is, I don't have a LCD TV but I do have a 19' LCD Computer Monitor. Luckily, I heard there is an HDMI to DVI cord that I can buy for about 15 bucks. The trouble is though that I'm a bit confused. From what I understand (I could be wrong) is that HDMI is both video and sound, while my computer monitor would be only video. If that's the case, how do i get sound?

The way I did it with my 360 (I imagine it's the same for PS3) is that I bought an adapter for the 3.5 mm line in port on my computer. The adapter has the two audio jacks, the white and the red.
I then bought an A/V only cable (since those have smaller plugs that can plug in at the same time as the HDMI port) and used the HDMI-to-DVI cable. Works perfect. You should be able to do the same thing, and assumedly you already have the component cables that came with your PS3 (just leave the video part of your cable danging and plug the audio cables into your audio dongle)

I not 100% sure on this, but if I'm wrong I'm sure someone will correct me on this... I believe you can get sound through an optical cable attached to a sound system, since you can tweak the audio output within the PS3. I know there's a Logitech sound system for computers that has an optical input; don't know the model number of it of the top of my head at the moment. If I find it, I'll post it... That's the only thing I know that would solve the audio problem. I'm sure there are other ways though.
EDIT: ^ That's another way! :)

So basically I just need to plug in the HDMI to DVI cable and the A/V that came with the system? So can I really plug in both at the same time and it will work?

You can have the PS3 send your sound through a different output, just go to the sound settings menu, there's a lot of choices.

Yeah. Like I said, it works for 360, but the above posters seem to confirm your only issue if you had done this: being able to change the audio source.
The dongle will cost you about two bucks plus shipping through Monoprice. Here's a link (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10401&cs_id=1040107&p_id=2120&seq=1&format=4#feedback).
The reviews on it are accurate: it's not color coded. It doesn't really matter. It's only two plugs, you have a 50/50 chance at guessing what plug goes where on your first try.
Other than a bit of hiss until I twisted the dongle a bit, it worked perfect. Cheap. Like you said, your cable should cost you about 15 or so.

Make sure your DVI monitor supports digital DVI and not analog DVI. If it's analog DVI, the HDMI converter cable will NOT work. That being said, everyone else is offering good advice.

I just checked and it says it's DVI-D so I guess I'm good to go! Thanks for everyone's help!

Make sure your monitor supports HDCP or else you wont get any picture. I know this first hand.

You must mean the Logitech Z-5500s or the Logitech Z-680s. The 680s are older and I have them and they work beautifully with the ps3s via optical.

I want to do this with my 20in Dell 2007FP.
How do I check if it supports HDCP?
I dont think it does tho since this is a few years old.

HDCP is supposed to just be for Blu Ray (and HD-DVD), and it hasn't actually been used yet, is my understanding. Games shouldn't be affected at all...except apparently they are. That's bizarre.

Dont buy a HDMI to DVI cable. Get a HDMI cable and a DVI adaptor, that way, when you upgrade your monitor, you won't have to get another cable.

Yeah, very good points by the two posters about HDCP and checking what DVI port you have. I completely forgot to say anything about those two concerns.
Just a quick question though.
I ordered all my cables on Monoprice yesterday (an HDMI-to-DVI cable, a 3.5 mm M/F audio cable extension (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10218&cs_id=1021802&p_id=648&seq=1&format=2) (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10218&cs_id=1021802&p_id=648&seq=1&format=2)for this cable (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10218&cs_id=1021803&p_id=663&seq=1&format=2)
Essentially, what I want to do is take the A/V PS3 cables and connect them to the cable in the second link and connect this 6-inch cable to the 6 ft extension (first link) to my computer.
Does that mean that I will need to have my computer open in order to ear sounds while I play on my 22'' LCD Monitor?
I tried to find ways to connect the extension to my Logitech X-230 but there are none except for headphones jack on one of the speakers. Will this work if I plug it on my headphones jack (i.e. without opening my computer)?
Logitech says it's Xbox, PS2 friendly (my speakers are rather old) but....

So you're going to be running the sound from your PS3 to your sound input on your computer, right? If so, then yeah, it'll only work when you have your computer running.
No, the headphone jack on your speakers won't work-that's an output.
Presumably you output the same type of connection to your speakers from your computer? If so, you can just adapt the PS3's audio and plug it in directly to those speakers, but you'd have to unplug one and plug in the other when you want audio from the computer versus the PS3.
