View Full Version : Which PS3 SKU do you own
The Mana Knight
03-22-2008, 11:08 AM
Well, I've seen threads like this at PSU and noticed there has never been a thread here asking people what PS3 SKU they have. I think it would be interesting to figure out what percentage of CAG members own each SKU.
If people wonder what SKU do they vote for if they upgraded their HDD, vote for the SKU your original HDD came from. If you have an all black PS3 (regardless of HDD), you vote 20GB.
Anyway, I have a 20GB PS3. Finally upgraded the HDD to a 250GB. :D

Yeah because saying you have a 60GB makes you soooo cool!!
The 60 isn't that much more superior in my book. Once the PS2 hits $99, the desire to find them for BC is going to go out the window.

I think there are "more" 60's because those are the users that want to come here to vote, you know to show they have the superior ps3. That's my opinion. It's a selective poll.Well, actually, there are tons of 60's because people had a choice at launch as to whether they wanted 60 or 20, and the majority wanted 60. The 20GB was discontinued at the end of 2006 in the U.S., so that's why next to no one has one. Secondly, the 60 was the first to drop price because they were getting rid of the SKU (The 80GB was initially $600). As soon as the 60GB became more scarce (some retailers still had them), the 80GB dropped price and the 40GB just came in. 60GB will have the most people due to it being the SKU around for the longest and it hasn't become hard to find until a few months ago.
I can say by the 2008 Holiday season, the percentage of 60GB owners will be cut in half (since production has ended), 40GB will see the biggest spike (At PSU, 40GB is the 2nd highest SKU), and the 80GB will increase just a little (because the MGS bundle is still limited and the consoles used for it are 80GB ones Sony hasn't shipped to retailers or MotorStorm bundles pulled off of the shelves).
But like I said, it just comes down to:
20GB being only available for 2-3 months really (very hard to find after that).
60GB was available for 12 months at least (to a point you could find a new one without many issues accross the country).
40GB just has 4 months.
80GB has 8 months, yet no one started bothering with it until October (meaning it's really 5 months).
The hell, me and Mana are the only two 20GB owners?
:)
daroga and naes have one, I just gotta get them to vote in this poll.
I have 2X the HDD as you though. ;)

60GB and 2 40GBs. The 60GB I bought first, when they were being clearanced (got Heavenly Sword and the remote for free), because I wanted one of the full BC units. The 40s I bought for my parents and father-in-law as Blu-Ray players.

60GB thanks to Meijer and their generous 30% off when you open their credit card.I would have gotten my 20GB PS3 cheaper at Meijer IF that one guy didn't take the PS3 away from me just to sell it on ebay (because Meijer had a 15% sale when you use your Meijer CC. The guy didn't have one and my parents did, so I was going to use theirs. I just took to long to decide). I was going to wait for another one, but I was losing sleep for a while since I couldn't stop thinking about a PS3, so I bought one 11 days later when I saw one again.
Proof I have a 20GB

That second statement definitely describes me. I had ZERO interest in the PS3, except possibly as a Blu-Ray player (though I would have preferred a standalone), until the 40GB was announced. As soon as they did that, it was clear that BC was an endangered species, and I snapped up a 60GB to prevent (non-)buyer's remorse.
If the 40GB hadn't been released, I probably wouldn't own a PS3 right now. Kind of paradoxical, I know. :)

60GB since a month after launch for me. I bought it for the BC but like doubledown I would consider selling it if I could get a premium for it since I've barely used that feature.
EDIT: Hmmm, after reading some of these posts maybe I should go in and see about deleting some of the hardware installs from old games I don't play anymore. I thought 60GB would be tons of room but I've already filled almost half of it!

If the 40GB hadn't been released, I probably wouldn't own a PS3 right now. Kind of paradoxical, I know. :)I was buying a PS3 regardless to anything (I bought before any talk of yanking BC out was announced). I knew what the PS3 came with was a good deal and I was buying it.
To an extent, I'd be fine with a 40GB since I rarely use my BC. PS2 games still look too ugly on my HDTV even with upscaling (I just stick to playing PS2 games on my PS2, on an SDTV, if I feel like playing a PS2 game).

I think there are more 60s because many CAGs saw the value in having BC and had sizeable PS2 collections.
For me, the ability to have one machine that does it all [more or less] is worth a little more expense because I don't have that much space for machines.

what do you mean about updating it? I understand it's software BC.. are you looking at future titles for PS2 or are you worried about getting older games that don't work well now to functioning w/o issues? all the games I care for now on PS2 work on my 80gb, which isn't a lot, but fine with me.

All fixes are stealth since Sony won't tell you they made fixes, gotta find it on their official site (since it says what firmware fixed what). We use to get updates every month, but it slowed down since many complained about too many updates.

Interesting to me that the 80gb and 40gb are just about neck and neck. My guess as to why the 60gb is winning is due to the fact it was in production the longest, along with the first price drop to $500 combined with the removal of the EE BC.

I beleive mana has mentioned something about the 20gb having smaller hd caching
