I just recently purchased a 360 and of course--Halo 3. My question is this: Should I bother playing through the first 2 Halo games before starting on 3? How in depth is the story, and does understanding it add much to the experience?
Thanks.

You definitely should play through the two games to get a grasp of the story. Halo 3 doesn't summarize anything so you'll be confused story-wise if you haven't played the other ones. Halo 2's storyline is somewhat confusing by itself though. Story-wise Halo 1> Halo 3 >Madden '99> Halo 2

Just read Wikipedia. The story in the first game is hardly there and the story in the second game should be well summarized even though from what I played it was lacking as well. Halo 3, while not having a great story has more story than the first two games.

Hmm... still undecided.
On one hand I think Wikipedia would suffice, but on the other hand I also would like to experience the story too, heh. But I don't feel like playing through a 12-hour campaign (or however long). I don't know.
How long is the campaign anyway?

I don't know...Madden's epic battle with the orcs on Mount Tuhr'duck-en was pretty awesome...

Most of the story is told in cutscenes. You can view all of them at halo.bungie.org

Another option , if you can read faster than you can play/beat games , is read the second halo novel Halo : The Flood , which summerizes the story of the first game while also filling in gaps of what happened between the gameplay levels. I thought it was a good read , as was the first and third novels as well.
Not much you can do about the second game besides play it , read a wiki summary , or watch the cutscenes at bungies site.

Thanks everyone for all the help. I actually found a good deal on Halo 2 (Limited Edition) for $15, so I went ahead and bought it anyway. I got to borrow a friend's Halo 1 for PC, so I could play through that. I'll be honest; I wasn't impressed at all with the level design (so repetitive!). Overall the game wasn't bad though for being like 7 years old. There wasn't as much to the story as I expected.
