I just set up a wireless network in my house and now I have a computer in my room set up on the network, but it SUXS!!!! So I got it about 6 years ago and I think I need 2 update it since it has only had minor things done. It has a second hard drive so I don't need any more space and I just put in usb 2.0 But it is really slow. I don't realy need 2 play games on it I just want to be able to not have it slowing down and freezing when i have like 30 windows open (which I do alot). Here are some of my system stats:
Dell XPS R400
Intel Pentium 2 Processer 398 MHz
128 MB of Ram
4x Cd Burner
XP Pro with SP1a
USB 2.0
ha yea i told u it was shit. To make my computer faster I need ram right?? I saw in the BB add 2day 512 MB PC2700 DDR RAM for 59.99 and 50% off installation. Is this any good? I don't really know much about computer hardware so any thing would be helpful. Thanks in advanced
Jon

Judging by how old your motherboard must be, it can guarantee that it won't take DDR. Got some SDRAM, and that'll help a bit. Otherwise, just go ahead and buy/build a whole new PC, if you can.

Oh, by "30 windows" open, if you 're talking about browser windows, then please, get Mozilla and use the Tabs. ;)

Is the 256 MB PC133 SDRAM at BB for 69.99 any good. Thanks for the help. Now that i think about it the thing that pisses me off the most about my pos is when i try 2 open Musicmatch or iTunes and it takes like 2 min litterally.

You dont have to reformat for ram. check www.newegg.com for sdram.

Yea now that i look i think i can get it for alot cheaper than BB it looks pretty cheap on ebay (but not sure if i trust ebay for somtin like this) but i did c this on an auction "Please make sure that your motherboard can take 256Mb SDRAM. Some older motherboards can only read 128Mb sticks. " is my motherboard that ghetto or should it accept 256? And how hard is it to install?

I have a feeling yours won't accept a 256 MB RAM, PC133 stick. Look for another 128MB PC100. Do you have the manuals that came with your computer? They might have the different kinds of memory you can install in there. If not, check Dell's support site or just call them.

I'd save your money and upgrade your whole machine, you can get a machine that's 3-4x faster for like $250 on sale. When your machine gets that old you start winding up paying ridiculous money for upgrades. Like more money for half as much memory as in your example.

You can make that machine run a bit smoother if you take a step back to Windows 9x/2k. Much less ram used by windows = more for your applications.

I have an xps r400 here. You cannot upgrade the memory past 384mb, as its 3 slots only support 128mb pc100 sdram each.

Yeah, just get a new computer. I decided to wait just one year because I figured I would get a computer when I go to college, and it was a tough year. If you have two years, get one now. CompUSA has an eMachines for $280 or so this week after rebate. It's not a great PC, but it will be good enough for a little while (especially if you get some good Antivirus and anti-Spyware programs, and run Firefox instead of IE).
