overall 2d fighting games are better than 3d fighting games but i think tekken (3, tag) is the best, dispite being 3d.

It just hits me - I can't stand Tekken as a series, though I've only briefly played 4.

EDIT: What I meant by that was that I dislike the Tekken series - but I can't speak for 4, as I've only briefly played it. Not that it's the only one I've played.

2D no doubt, never did really like tekken

2D forever.

I've played (and own) my fair share of 3D ones too (DOA, Bloody Roar, Tekken, Soul Calibur, etc.), but nothing compares to the classic 2D fighters.

I'd pick Guilty Gear X2 over Soul Calibur 2 in a heartbeat.

2d. i loved tekken, but the fighting wasnt fast or TURBO like in games i like. 2d owns 3d anytime. even newer 3d's wont compare. no matter how beatiful. they arent fast enough for me. i want a game like dead or alive 3 on speed. or tekken on speed. or crack.. or anything that gets it hyped.

aside from VF, 2D is better

well this is pretty one sided (especially the discussion!) who voted 3d?

I voted for 3d only because of games like Virtua Fighter. I really love the Tekken series too. I used to play that and Soul Calibur 2 so much. NOw I wish i had voted for 2d since when i think about it they are actually overall better.

I love Tekken 3, but not as much as I love SNK fighters, so 2D for me.

I can't stand Tekken, VF is pretty good. I can't wait for Dead or Alive online, yay! But my heart belongs to 2Ds. Anything Capcom touches is awsome. I love love love Guilty Gear.

I like both but if given a choice, I'll take 2D. There is only a few 3D games I'll play as much as 2D....

Project Justice
DOA3 (Series)
Soul Blade/Calibur Series

That's about it. I like VF4 and Tekken but not as much as those others.

I can't stand Tekken, but I can't stand Street Fighter anymore either.

Anyway, 3D is better with just VF, everything else is a bonus.

I'm in the 3D camp. It's where the future of fighting games are going plain and simple. Virtua Fighter and Soul Caliber are simply awesome. Tekken eats ass, but what are you gonna do?

Nothing beats the sheer perfection of VF 4.

To clarify here, are you talking about having a 3d engine or is this just polygons vs sprites? There haven't been too many true 3d fighters, afterall.

I get more play time with 3d fighters personally. I really don't understand the huge problem everyone seems to have with tekken. IMO Tekken has far better game play then VF(not deeper more fun) it seems to me the problem people have with tekken is the accessibility of the system. Most fighting gamers have to be 1337 and know how to make the 12 year old who wants to try and play cry. Tekken allows the 12 year old with a basic knowledge of the system to some what compete (a good thing) while games like MvC2 (which I love) are very unforgiving for new players. Most new players aren't interested in beating there head into a wall trying to learn whats going on while losing 35 straight matches to some BS trapping player who likes to monopolize the arcade machines. A more in-depth combo training in 2d home versions would go far to fix this issue since many 2d players new to the games are lost piecing together combos or counter attacking and resort to the fatal I throw a ton of supers offense only to lose 100 matches and lose intrest in the game. Finally fighting elite types do the fighting genre a favor when the xbox live games hit try and find a player you can help "train" get them skilled in things they wouldn't have learned for months otherwise. Save our dying genre.

well fighters are 2d gameplay by nature.

some games break the 2d mold (power stone) but most are 2d gameplay. i was thinking more polygons vs sprites

2D is the best. I'm not a big fan of Tekken (except 3) and I never really got into VF. However, Rival Schools and Project Justice are two very good 3D games.

I prefer 2D games - they tend to be simpler and to the point.

I just got MK:DA and I have to say that I have been reminded how I hate combos in fighting games. Not short, simple combos, but the ridiculously long, no one is ever going to attempt this, combo.

I was doing the konquest with raiden and I had to do a 9 button combo to move on. Now who the hell is going to memorize and attempt a 9 button combo? Someone with no life - that's who!

It's really not that hard. Stuff like that feels like clockwork to me.

2d waiting for: SF anniversary collection, Capcom Fighting Jam
3d: Tekken 5, VF 4 Tuned

I hope Tekken 5 turns out to be more balanced btw, I hated how Jin was overpowered in 4.

I have to say I prefer 2d fighters. My favorite being the Marvel Heros series including the SF vs Marvel. 3d just doesnt feel like it needs any skill to be a good player.

I was about to say 3d but one game stopped me:

MARVEL VS. CAPCOM 2
that and soul calibur 2 was overrated, and therefore must suffer.

2D; Always found it more fun to play over 3D. But don't get me wrong I do like some 3D fighters (Toshinden,Tekken,DOA) but If I was stuck on an island with just a few fightings games all would be 2D.

Definetly 2D. There was no way that someone can mash buttons and get in lucky hits on 2D where as 3D games that does happen sometimes. I have to say though with Dead or Alive 3, Ultimate, etc... 3D is beautiful in its own way.

2D-Street Fighter , Guilty Gear
3D-VF 4

Wow, what a tough choice..SSF2T and Guilty Gear X2 vs VF4 and Soul Calibur(My fave of 2D and 3D)

ummmmmmmm
hmmmmmmmm
........
I choose.. Nothing, both are great.

Edit: By the way, IMO, Anything Tekken without the number 3 on the end of it is pure, complete, undiluted crap.

Yea some of the combos are excessive, but I got most of the six button combos down and they are very effective in the game.

It's hard to choose, but I think I'll go with 2D.

Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution is probably the best fighter ever, but 2D games (like Guilty Gear and Street Fighter) seem to have the best games when you look at all of them as a whole.

Where's the 2 1/2D Super Smash love? That is, if you consider Smash to be a fighter in the same category as SF or Tekken.

Is Super Smash Bros. really a fighter. I'd consider it more of a brawler. It's a fine distinction, but I think that style of game (also note Kung Fu Chaos and Powerstone) is a different category.

super smash bros. is a fighting game. no really complex button sequences or special moves, but you're fighting nonetheless. i'm not a big fan of ssb, nor am i really impressed by people who are "REALLY GOOD" at it... but it's still a fighting game.

anyone here a hardcore fighting game player? as in going to/following the tourney scene?
