If SSBB wasn't full of already Nintendo created characters, the characters created just for SSB would not be nearly as unique as they are now. If this was a fighter without nintendo characters there wouldn't be a character than can throw bombs and shoot arrows with a sword while at the same time have a character with wings that can float around and turn his bow into a sword whenever he wants while also at the same time having a character that can switch between a big dragon with wings that breathes fire, a creature with long range and vines, and a fast character that can push enemies back by shooting water.

This uniqueness adds to the gameplay.

Interestingly, SSB originally didn't have Nintendo characters and was called Dragon King: The Fighting Game. source: http://us.wii.com/iwata_asks/ssbb/vol7_page1.jsp

Here is a screenshot of Super Smash Brothers before it had Nintendo characters.
(screenshot will appear here soon after the site it is on comes back up lol)

Yeah, not to be a dick, but there are about 20 Brawl threads already.

That last bit's neat, though.

Personally I don't think the "Frank" rule applies to Smash Brothers, simply because there are no other games of consequence that play like it.

If you wanna talk about shooters, 3D adventure games, or sports sims, you've got a TON of options to choose from, and the Frank Rule must certainly be taken into consideration. But when it comes to single-screen multiplayer deathmatch platformers with 2D gameplay, Smash isn't just the best in the genre - it IS the genre. And it just so happens that the only game to really do this type of gameplay does it really well. Until some other games LIKE Smash Brothers come out, I don't think we have to worry about a Nintendo bias swaying the reviews.

and that's the whole reason I think that whole Frank crap doesn't apply to the main Nintendo games like Zelda, Metroid and Mario Gaalxy, because they are so unique and bring in items and concepts that are only available in those games.

I do think the Frank thing works with Mario Party, Mario Strikers (even though I love that game), Mario and Sonic at the Olympics etc... but again those games don't get better reviews, but better sales because of the Mario game being attached to it.

tl:dr, but yes. It adds to the experience (just like graphics) and makes it more entertaining. There is a reason All Pro Football 2k8 failed people.

As I said in the main thread, I'd still love SSB/SSBM/SSBB without the Nintendo characters, trophies, etc. But I certainly would not spend anywhere near as much time as I do with it without it. I ain't beating Classic Mode 39 times to get a trophy of "Mr. Fighter Guy 7".

Actually, it is more likely inspired by some Taiwan knock-offs that were made for the Famicom/NES in the early to mid 1990's. It was called Kart Fighter, and had Nintendo sprites pasted into a Street Fighter II game, both of which were unauthorized/unlicensed games.

(P.S. I have one of the original carts, and it is very cool.)

The gameplay is not like street fighter and it originally didn't have Nintendo characters.

Without a doubt I believe the awesome established characters of nintendo add a lot to the game, but it'd still be great as a fighter with its own characters as well.

But really, you can't get much better than nintendo's characters. Not only do they provide unique moves, but they're just damn likable....the disney appeal.

I mean, I like Donkey Kong, I'm fine with Diddy, and I have a soft spot for Cranky... but looking through the DK section of my trophy gallery is absolutely painful. Rare gets some of the blame, but who the hell at Nintendo came up with the abominations that were in Barrel Blast?

What are you talking about?

Super Smash brothers originally didn't have Nintendo characters in it. It wasn't until later when they tried it out and saw that it worked fabulously.

Yeah exactly, If it played like street fighter with Nintendo characters It wouldn't be so popular.
