In an unprecedented marketing move, ESPN Videogames will include a mix of three dozen original and licensed tracks from Hip-Hop acts for its upcoming NBA 2K5 release.

A soundtrack will be included as a gift when purchased at stores like Electronic Boutique and Game Stop. Some of the featured artists will also appear on a 45-date tour and some of the highlights will be featured on a DVD scheduled to hit retail early next year.

"This is the first year we're licensing music and also commissioning original tracks for our games. It's not only our most ambitious 'multimedia' program for any game, but also one of the most innovative for the industry," ESPN Videogames marketing and promotions director Tim Rosa said in a statement. "We're creating partnerships with artists by promoting them on our Web site, their CD and singles releases, tour updates and bios and pitching them to the ESPN Networks for use on their cable outlet stations."

NBA 2K5 features Del The Funky Homosapien and Definitive Jux's Aesop Rock while the soundtrack includes cuts from Skillz, The Roots, Aceyalone and Mad Lib taken from Okayplayer Records' True Notes Vol. 1. Roots affiliate Truck and Mack will be submitting tracks tailor made for the game.

"I've always loved gaming, so it's only natural to be a part of 'ESPN NBA 2K5' as a character in the game. I've even got my own dream team," Del said in a statement. "It's also a kick to provide some of the soundtrack beats and to work together on the coming tour."

The ESPN sponsored Champion Sound tour kicks off October 13 at the University of Southern California in Santa Barbara and concludes at San Francisco's Fillmore Theater on November 24.

Wow, if it is given away at some stores and they keep the $20 price tag....excellent!

I'm getting a vision of the future...I see my copy of the soundtrack on eBay...for a penny.

I'm guessing you don't like backpack rap.

I rather have low key music than pay $50 to hear people like 50-c or whoever.

Isn't the game only $20?

Yes it is.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it is.

I have a question, though. Why do we get rock and punk on extreme sports games and rap on regular sports games?

I know I'd like a little punk thrown into a football or basketball game.

last years madden had afi and blink 182. But the music is most likely chosen by who they think is going to play the game and what music they like.

I'm happy with the lineup. I'm sure alot of people haven't heard songs by Aesop Rock or Del. This is a good outlet so they get more exposure. They are both awesome rappers. And of course the Roots are just crazy good.

Madden has a very mixed soundtrack. And this new ESPN thing will be kinda cool, only I don't like rap music. The real question you were getting at is what's with game companies thinking everyone who buys basketball videogames listens to just rap music?

Probably based on marketing surveys where they ask customers what sort of music they'd like on future editions of the game.

I agree 100%. They got real artists, unlike EA. Plus the game is only $20, I'm getting it.

well... it's one thing to put hip hop in a game...

...but underground/semiunderground? not that i have anything against it, but who decided to put del, acey, and aesop on this thing? these artists aren't even close to mainstream, with the closest being the roots. but the roots in a sports game? i like hip hop more than any other music, but i think it's a little odd that they'd put backpacker stuff before they put in more mainstream rock or whatever it is that people want.

then again, no other music artist likes video games more than del does... if you guys haven't heard it yet, listen to "proto culture"...

props to anyone who can name the game that the beat in that song comes from...

Now I will have to pick it up for $20 when it comes out. The last 3 THPS games have had a few Del songs in them, and I thung THUG had an Aesop Rock song in it. I like that they seemed to get a bunch of guys on the soundtrack though.

I like Del The Funky Homosapien and I don't like hip hop. So maybe the other artists will turn out to be good to listen to.

Where's the music CD?! No game store around here seems to have it or know what I'm talking about.
