Shrek is a million seller? I guess it works as a "box of disappointment with free game."

Glad to see pokemon that high up there, but I would have guessed it sold more than 5 million.

And if it's the best selling games of the last 12 months, shouldn't mario & sonic at the olympics be in the top 5? I mean, it's already sold 6 million world wide....

Ok. That explains it then.

They should divide total sales by the number of consoles/platforms that the game is on. That would give a more accurate list IMHO.

How?

Its the most sold.

Its simple logic that the more platforms you have it on, the more potential it has to sell.

True, I don't deny that fact the list is what it is, a list of the best selling games overall.

I guess what I envision is a list that takes into account number of platforms compared to sales. Something that would show avg. games sold per platform.

I don't know where I'm going with my thoughts, but it makes sense in my mind.

I see what your saying, you want an average of games sold per platform.
i.e. Game x/ Number of Platforms it was on.
AMIRITE?

Although that would be a different list entirely.

They really should not be counting DS sales of COD4 with the PC/360/PS3 sales.

How old is the data used? I find it hard to believe that Smash Bros Brawl isn't on there.

we don't have smash data yet.

It might not be hard to read the title where it says, " PAST 12 MONTHS"

I was more surprised that COD4 only beat Halo 3 by 300K copies despite the fact that it sells on all platforms vs. only the 360. I would've thought the gap would be much larger.

Wow, but I guess it is hard to show a little civility, isn't it? Now, I'm no expert historian, but I am fairly certain that Brawl was released in the past 12 months.

Brawl released in March.

This is not from any games in March because no NPDs have come out for march.

NFS ProStreet's sales were sickening. I'll admit I liked other NFS games many did not, but I did not like Pro Street.

Transformers is the 16th highest selling game of the year? Pirates: At World's End is the 19th? Can't imagine all those Wii loving soccer moms being to blame for that one.

Even so, MPC seems pretty low on the list with only 1.1M sales.

Metroid Prime hasn't sold that well besides the first game.

I'm surprised No More Heroes didnt even make the Top 100, although far from perfect it was an enjoyable experience.

I'm surprised that Skate and Uncharted are slow low. With the hype Skate had, it's still below Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground (which I personally felt was better anyhow.). Eh, No surprise at the top 10 though.

Aug-Feb Sales vs. just Feb Sales

The comparison is meaningless. If you look at first month US sales it was 218K for Metroid vs. 529K for DMC.

I don't know if that list is accurate. R&C TOD sold a million according to Ted Price. So unless it sold 400,000 in Australia and Japan, I don't see how that is possible.

I bet a lot of the Orange Box sales were through Steam, and probably not tracked through this.

That made me do a doubletake, because I distinctly remember reading a while back that Skate outsold Tony Hawk by 2:1. Maybe thats only for the 360 versions tho. Is Skate even on the ps3?

Yes, it's on the PS3 but it came out later than the 360 version. However, I heard the same shit you did.

When High School Musical games vastly outsell my GOTY (Ratchet and Clank) I am a sad panda. But seriously, NFS:Prostreet? I don't even know anybody who's played it.

There's apparently 5.4 million people you don't know then. ;)

I only, or maybe happily, own eight of those and have owned 17 of them at some point in time.

I'm disappointed something like "Imagine: Fashion Designer" sells almost as much as an awesome game like Uncharted.

Yeah, the inclusion of DS games really hoses up a lot of comparisons you can make. For most of those games (not just CoD4) the DS version is really a different game - even in games like Ratatouille. In that case, the GC and PS2 versions are different than the 360 - not just graphically, but in gameplay and story even to a certain extent.

There is one very interesting bit of data not shown in the original list, but in their later analysis:

http://www.next-gen.biz/images/stories/mattsgraphs/GamesPeopleBuy2008/regionalbreakdown.gif

Beyond the obvious results (Madden/PES/FIFA) this reveals the European fondness for racing sims and a somewhat shocking result for the Simpsons game (about 3/4 of sales in Europe). And GH III being so dominated by U.S. sales is, I guess, a mild surprise. Same thing with Pokemon.

This chart explains the sales of NFS Pro Street. Azumangaman - the reason you don't know anyone who played it is presumably because they are all in Europe ;).

Now that you mention it, the only people that have that game in their gamer scores on my list are Europeans! Interesting info.

When its all said and done i would like to see a chart showing the sales of Halo3 in the first 12 months and a chart showing MGS4 sales in the first 12 months since these are sony and micrsoft's big dogs for the console's. As a side note i will own both since i am a fan of both series, MGS story> Halo story, Halo value> MGS value.

Funny you should mention that. I had a brit staying over at my house for a week after coming in for a friend's wedding and we chatted a bit about videogames. He told me that "everyone in the UK thinks Guitar Hero is gay" which gave me a good chuckle (turns out it's true!). He was also a huge Halo 3 player. Apparently they enjoy the Halo over there which I wouldn't have thought either.

Any video game story > MGS story, in my book. Hell, Big Mutha Truckers story > MGS story...

Transformers the game and Pirates of the Caribbean? No wonder they can put out any game as long as it is based on a movie.

Wow, a lot of Transformers animosity in this thread. Have any of you actually played Transformers? It's actually quite fun. It's not terrible for a movie license game.

Yeah, I remember all the hype for Skate:roll: It outsold Tony Hawk, etc. How much better it was, etc. No chance. I think all it is is that Tony Hawk is the big dog on the street and when you've been on top for so long people want to take swipes at you. Kind of like Microsoft, Sony, etc...but the difference in this case is that Tony Hawk on his worst game is still quality. Skate was just repetitive and kind of lame. Had some nice aspects though, but needs a lot more refinement.

Yea, I'd like to see this also. It's interesting that the scenario for MGS is the same as it was for Halo. For both, the story arc's are coming to an end... a possible end for both series as we know them. The success of Halo was extremely important for the 360... and the success of MGS is important for the PS3. With MGS, we are seeing an end of an era on a new console (20+ year history)... while not as epic or ground breaking , the same is true for Halo.

It's nice to see a list like this and have the hardcore demo of video game players that they don'w own the industry. And shows how much power the casuals have when a game like MySims sells so many copies.
