Today nintendo annouced another mario game. Mario Super Sluggers.

Nintendo kicked off its Media Summit this morning with a quick preview of its next mascot-filled baseball title, now known as Mario Super Sluggers. Nintendo of America's Bill Trinnen walked the gathered press through a single inning—much speedier than the real life thing—featuring the Mario Firebats team taking on the Peach Royals. Like Super Mario Strikers, Mario Super Sluggers uses a similar coach character team set up, with second string NIntendo characters like Shy Guy and Baby Mario covering the field while the player handles pitching duties.
Mario Super Sluggers uses a control scheme built on the foundation of Wii Sports baseball, with only Wii Remote gestures required to play. With Mario as his pitcher, Trinnen demoed the game's controls, using Wii-mote swinging to throw fastballs, curveballs and, naturally, fireballs. Twists of the remote during your swing allows for curveballs, with a properly timed swing—performed just as a set of glowing rings centers on your character—adding extra heat to the ball.

They say its built on the minigame on wii sports, but with fielding included too.

Was there a predecessor for this on GCN or something? Because I am just not excited at all by this announcement. Maybe playing an earlier build will hype me up some (?).

Holy Jesus, I'm in heaven.

I get to play another game featuring glorious Nintendo characters like Mario, Luigi, Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, Wario, Waluigi, the list goes on and on. It's exactly what I want in every game I play. I love those characters so much. I wish they could star in every game. Or at least be unlockable in every game.

With such innovative, immersive controls coupled with a cast of fresh and unique all-star characters, it's no wonder I play my Wii every single day. This is another day one purchase for me.

Heaven!

GameCube one was pretty fun, although there were some annoying problems, mostly with the fielding. Still looking forward to this one.

Ken Griffey on the SNES would be awesome (N64 version wouldn't hurt, either). Put it up with one of the greatest baseball games of all time already on the VC: Baseball Stars 2. Throw Dusty Diamond's All-Star Softball on there too, and you've got some of the best sports games ever made.

It's even more amazing that some people still bitch about Nintendo continuing to work on the beloved series of many gamers, despite the fact that each game is consistently and progressively great.

Yeah, how dare Nintendo showcase their world-famous characters? You'd never see Microsoft or Sony do anything like that!

(Now where'd I put my can of Master Chef Mountain Dew?)

Seriously, if the game controls aren't borked, I'll probably end up getting this. My son loves baseball and Mario, and fun family games are always a plus IMO.

Once they officially say "Animal Crossing", all we need then is a Star Fox and a Kirby game and WE SET. Plus, I'm waiting for the Mario Party 9 announcement.. you KNOW it'll happen

If it's anywhere as bad or cheap (as in cheap AI) as Mario Baseball was on the GC, count me out. That game wasn't that good for me. And the multiplayer sucked because you didn't have full control when you were out on the field.

doubt that there will be a hockey or football game. Nintendo is a Japanese comp. and Japan is a big market for them. The japanese love baseball but dont like hockey or football. Basketball may be a possibility. I believe there is a mario basketball game out for the ds.

The hell? You said "in forever", implying that it has been a substantial amount of time since a new franchise was launched. Most of the (very good) examples provided came out within the last few years with reasonable spacing between each title. Does this mean that "in forever", which generally refers to the past, actually means "in the future"? I'll fix it for you:

Nintendo has not made a new franchise in the future, and instead they will be dumbing down all the games for mass consumption.

Now we know that Nintendo will never come out with a new franchise again.

Is this a true sequel to the Mario Baseball game on the Gamecube, or just a mini-game? I missed the Gamecube game, but it looked pretty cool. I'm a sucker for Mario games, and it sounded like it had really fun RPG/adventure-style progression where you traveled and beat other teams, etc. Looked like my kind of sports game.

I'm hoping this is just as deep for single player, but worried it's just a Wii-sports esque thing (ugh...I do NOT want to have to wave the controller to hit a ball, in addition to wanting a full game).

I'd actually prefer if they just took Wii Sports Baseball and just fleshed it out a little. Even if they tried to make it more of a sim, which they won't, I've got MLB 08 on the PS3 and there's no way this is ever gonna compare to that. It doesn't seem to me that there's much of a market for a deep baseball sim starring Mario. They'd be better off sticking with the party game format. I always wanted to be able to play a full 9 innings on Wii Sports anyway.

Modern sports games are way too hard for me. I prefer the 8-bit and early 16-bit stuff. Just the right complexity. I'd like something like that, married to some RPG elements, and throwing the Mario characters in on top of that would be great.

Sounds like that's what the Gamecube Mario baseball game was, and I missed it. Oh well.

Thanks, but unfortunately my Circuit City doesn't have any good 'Cube games left. I'm really hoping this game is very similar to (if not improved from) that 'Cube game though! I'm scared by the thought that it's just going to be mini-games, or force you to use accelerometer controls or whatever.

Someone may have already posted this, but here are IGN's impressions. It sounds pretty terrible unfortunately. I'm still not a fan of the Wii's controls (with few minor exceptions) and the line up this fall for my tastes sounds weak. Boom Blox sounds interesting though. EDIT: And that Paintin' De Town game sounds really interesting too...so I guess there is some good stuff coming from the third parties.

Mario Baseball on the GameCube I thought was tremendously fun. Kind of a crazy baseball-like game that you could just pick up and play and it had all the Nintendo characters in it. Mario Strikers was also that way (even more so).

As am I. I don't have any particular attachment to the Mario characters. Yes, there have been plenty of Mario games I have enjoyed, but I would probably be more inclined to buy this if it used a new cast of characters. Like robots. Or anything really. My wife and I were even playing Mario Kart last night and she said "why does this have to have the stupid Mario characters anyway? Why couldn't it be Miis or some other people?" I didn't have a good answer, and it made me realize that I am excited for things like Boom Blox because they are creating a new universe from scratch. Sometimes Mario feels like a crutch.

I'm fine with the Mario rehashes because the underlying games are always fun apart from the characters, and the art style is always appealing to me. As long as it's a solid game, they can keep making them for all I care.

The GC Mario Baseball was terrible.

The nice thing about using the Marioverse for stuff like this is that it gives you an immediate excuse to do all sorts of crazy power-up insanity. Get some sort of star or mushroom or item, and the next thing you know you're throwing 500MPH Bullet Bill pitches, or running the bases as Mega Luigi as he stomps the infielders...

I'm already sold. It looks to be improved from the original, which was one of my favorite GC games. I can't think of many 2-player games that I've had more fun with.

I just hope they've fixed the base stealing glitch. I'm not sure how many people noticed, but it was almost impossible to get caught stealing bases against a computer opponent. You could run back to the base you came from and the other team would not throw the ball to that base until you were safely back. I couldn't believe that they missed that the first time around.

I don't know how true that is; after all, you can limit the actual playing experience down to however simple you want.

I suppose, but the biggest selling point of it is how in depth it is despite its cartoony graphics. I just don't think Power Pros would be all that fun if you broke it down to its simplest gameplay, but that's just my opinion.

I think for the casual baseball fan Super Sluggers would most likely be a bit more suitable. But by all means, give it a rental Rolento you might end up liking it. I know I do, but I love tweaking stats and micro management stuff.

Anyway, I watched the video and I'm pretty excited for Sluggers. Hopefully it improves on some of the more glaring flaws that the original had. Also, for the love of god give me a Mario Hockey and a Mario Basketball on a console!

So, this game comes out in a few days and there hasn't been a post here in 2 months... Nice!

Well, I'm excited for it in any case. Next week is big - Tales of Vesperia on the 360 which will take up most of my time and then this game. I'll put a little time into Mario Super Sluggers as a change of pace. I never got that far into the Gamecube one, though I did enjoy it.

Overall, though, this has been yet another very quiet launch from Nintendo. I see the preorder boxes in Gamestop but that's about it. I preordered it at Blockbuster and they claim they have 3 on the way but won't have them till Friday. Oh well, I can wait.

The advance reviews are OK (8/10 or so from 2 sources on Metacritic so far) so it's not like they are hiding it because it stinks... But we'll see I guess.

What places are offering the Mario hat with pre-orders? (Saw this in a Canada thread, so hoping U.S. gets it also.)

We're not getting it as far as I know.

i'm going to wait till i read a review of this game. but i'm hoping to buy it.
mostly because there is so little else to play. but also because i had a pretty good time with the last one.

has anyone heard anything about the online play? i haven't heard anything.

As far as I know, there isn't any online play.

Which is unfortunate since the online multiplayer in Strikers was pretty fun.

I was kinda lookin forward to this game. I usually buy anything with Mario slapped on the cover, but c'mon. No wifi?
That's not what pisses me off; this game should have waited for the Wii MotionPlus :bomb:
HOPEFULLY when the inevitable Mario Tennis comes out, it uses MotionPlus.

I've had this since June and only played a few games here and there to show people the game. Its fun, I've never played the last Mario Baseball but its fun.

I do think this has a very lengthy single player mode though. Can't tell the details though cause its in Japanese but there seems to be a lot to do! Lots of cool minigames as well.

I'm pretty excited for this game. The videos I've seen look great. Of course it all depends on how it plays, but usually Nintendo does it right, so I have high hopes for it. I actually don't mind that it doesn't have WiFi, which is not to say that I wouldn't want it to have WiFi, just that it isn't critical for me, perhaps because I'm usually pretty lousy at sports games, and so losing over and over online doesn't have a lot of appeal for me. I'd rather crush my 5 and 7 year old boys. ;^) No, no, believe me, I do let them win. Sometimes. :)

Yes but this game WOULD have been so much better with Wii MotionPlus. There's really no excuse for it now. With the WMP, at least it would take some skill.. versus..shaking the remote at the right time.
Hopefully games post-motion plus will be a lot better.

You can compare the way this uses motion controls to that of Mario Strikers, its obviously not necessary but it adds just a tiny bit of charm to the experience.

The next game I buy will be wii sports resort with motion plus. I was going to get this but I got a ps3 and can't see myself spending more than 30 bones on any wii game. All my best wii games are vc games. If I didn't have a few of those I would sell the wii. Right now i have 4 systems I like better than it. Hopefully this game will be half price in a year.

Yeah that's fine because Strikers played really well and the MotionPlus wouldn't really had done anything for that game. That is where "motion control" is good. A baseball game of any kind SHOULD be 1:1 to make it more realistic and require more skill. Waggle works well with mini games "shake the remote for a ridiculous amount of time" "flick the remote at the right time"..ETC. That works. This is one of the reasons why everyone went "YAAAAAWN" at Red Steel..because the waggle was not for that game. That game SHOULD be 1:1. This Clone Wars game coming out SHOULD be 1:1.

Hopefully they get Mario Tennis and Golf right. :bomb:

I always assumed Sluggers was basically Wii Sports baseball but more in depth and better?

Can you rotate your wrists and have the bat mimic the motion for example?

I was watching the video on the Nintendo Channel and it shows that you can twist it, but it only sets up the kind of pitch? Like if you have it turned to your left it's a curve ball. Holding A does a fastball I think?

Regardless. No MotionPlus = [-(

Yeah, shocking, eh? (BTW, it's been about 3-4 weeks now).

Anyway, I hear you lilboo on the motion plus. But if this is a better version of the GC Mario Baseball and plays similar to that then I have no problem with it. And obviously that didn't need any motion plus control. I just got my Nintendo Power and they gave it a 7.5 (haven't read the text yet though).

In any case, this being a first-party Mario title I'll get it at full price. I certainly hope it is not half price within a year ;). Though Mario Baseball on the 'cube did get cheap after not too long - it seems the Mario sports games are the exception to the $50 forever rule on the big Nintendo franchises.

I enjoyed the GCN version a lot, however, what did they really add to it? They only tweaked the graphics at a bare minimum (not really an issue, but still), added a few characters and gave it waggle.

Getting it now and getting it next year won't be much of a difference since either way it'll still be $50

What they SHOULD have done was to give it Wifi AND/OR waited for MotionPlus. Without those 2, this is simply just a Gamecube game with wiimote flicking. :(

I'm interested in this game, but I never played the Gamecube version. I'm number 6 to get it from Goozex. Guess I'll be playing Mario Baseball first on the Wii.

Just read the NP review. As I said before, they gave it a 7.5. But this seems to be the issue of 7.5's, as they gave the same score to Force Unleashed on the Wii, and Disgaea and Dragon Quest IV on the DS.

It sounds like the game has a lot of improvements from the GC one and that the control scheme is actually pretty complex (overly simple control has always been a knock on Mario sports games so that should please the Wii haters). It looks like there is a lot more customization of teams - including the ability to pair up characters that have chemistry so they can pull of special moves. I forget exactly, but weren't you stuck with specific sidekicks in Mario Baseball, or am I thinking of Strikers? It also says there is a very deep single-player experience (something else usually lacking from the Mario sports games).

It does offer pitching and hitting identical to Wii Sports but also the option to use a regular controller, so that's good.

You're thinking of Strikers. That said, it was damn near impossible to pull off those moves most of the time, in my experience.

I'm interested in this game, but not at full price. I've already got the GameCube one, and as much as I'd like this...I'm broke. :-(

No - my Blockbuster (where I have it preordered) won't have it till Friday. However, I'm fairly sure it is nothing like those other two games. But if you hated those because of the Mario theme (that being the only thing they have in common) then you won't like this either .

Bought it at circuit city today... the wii-mote mode is pretty stupid. Its a lot less fun than wii sports. Turning the controller sideways is much better, but it feels exactly like the gc version just a little worse. If I could return the game I would, which sucks because I was such a HUGE fan of the gc version. The game feels like they did not take the time to polish it up b/c of the lack of online play and the fact you can't use the gc controller. If you don't have the gc one, wait for a price drop on this.

Wait, one of the reviews mentions the Wiimote + nunchuk mode as being the best control scheme. Did you try that?

I played through the practice modes to learn the new controls and then played an exhibition game and enjoyed it so far. Some aspects seem easier than the original (hitting zone shows the sweet spot for hitters) but there are also aspects that make it more interesting (anti-fielding items....which I forget exactly what they are called but are used to help cause errors, close plays are now up to who can get the button correct first instead of hoping you'll just bowl the third baseman or catcher over). Wiimote/nunchuck controls feel perfectly fine to use and I haven't had any problems with them so far. Lack of WiFi play does hurt if you can't have friends over, but thankfully I don't have that case. The gameplay overall isn't much different than the first, but that isn't a bad thing if you liked the first game which I did. Will post more after playing through more of the game.
