I registered late this quarter, so I was forced to take archaeology 200 something, comparative politics 200 something, and biological anthropology. So, I can definately empathize with your boring class having-ness. (although anthro doesn't suck, but its at 830am so...)

Yeah anything 9:00 and after seems so much easier to get to on time. I guess it doesn't help that I work till 11 a good deal of the week, but it means I get to buy games!

That's what I hated about undergrad, having to take so many classes that don't interest you to fill requirements.

I've love grad school on the other hand (dissertation away from Ph D), as all your classes are in your area of interest. Only think I had to suffer through were statistics courses, but those were vitally necessary for the research work I do now.

Today is Arbor Day at school! Which means no classes, just some raking!

And milk, donuts, and beer (yes, beer) come around on a cart at 9am.

And since I work on campus, I can skip afternoon work and go get lunch and then come home for some games. Win.

May 22 is almost here...

Ooh, so is April 27. Who's getting Mario Kart Wii?

No Kendal. Shhhh. Please don't tell her! I finally just got her to agree to wearing her "wench" outfit when we go to the renesaince fair this weekend. I haven't been to the renesaince fair in a couple of years, but I do love any excuse to wear one of my swords out in public without being arrested or mistaken for a highlander.

I'm at the part in Etrian Odyssey where I'm going back down to the harder parts of the first 5 floors that were inexcessable the first time around. Slowly making some progress.

Just over in the Final Fantasy IV DS thread and saw that the release date was July 22. Hell yeah! Just 4 days after my birthday, so that works out very well. However, if Sqeenix really wanted to give me a birthday present, they would GIVE ME DRAGON WARRIOR IV YOU STUPID MORONS!!!! Ahem. Sorry, I'm just upset they haven't even announced the damn thing for North America. Bastards.

While I was at it, I also preordered FES and ordered this cute Etna figure (https://rosenqueen.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=192&strVarSel=&strCompare=).

This past Friday was my last day of work. Have to look for a new gig of course, but in the meantime, I'm grateful to have some time off to relax.

Started Tales of Symphonia yesterday. I'm not used to this style of RPG, so it took me a little while to get accustomed to, but it's pretty decent so far.

Yeah, that game took me a little while to get used to also. But it grows on you. I absolutely hated it the first time I played, and barely got 3 hours in before sticking it on the shelf for almost a year before going back to it. I eventually warmed up to the whole style of the game, and I consider it to be the best RPG on the Cube. Which isn't saying much, since there's really only like 10-12 RPGs on the Cube to begin with.

I think I'm towards the end of Breath of Fire IV. I finally made it to the capitol of the Empire, and I've been working my way thru that dungeon to get to the emporer dude. I've really been surprised by the great storytelling, since the first 3/4ths of the game was kinda bland on the story. That whole part where Cray has to kill Nina's sister was unexpected.

I started ToS yesterday and played for an hour or two before stopping to go do something else, and in the meantime I wondered if I wanted to continue, as it seemed pretty simplistic. However, I did want to know what was going on in the story and put in a few more hours last night; that's when I decided that yeah, the combat is okay (and actually harder than it first appears) and I do want to continue with it.

I've had this sort of experience with games before, but I think this is the first time it's ever happened with an RPG.

04-15-2008, 03:00 PM
Well, we're gonna have to split hairs here. Technically its not a demo. Its a preview. Thats what the word Prologue means. The distinction is the stage in development that the main game is in. Demos are generally not crafted until very late in the process or even after the game is already done. Its something thats released very close to the main game in order to sell you on it.

Being early enough would be closer to the definition of Beta, except without the rigorous testing that a Beta involves.

With that said, when you release X out of Y playable elements early, people are going to call it a demo, and its not entirely unfair for them to do so.

InuFaye
04-15-2008, 03:03 PM
Considering it has more cars, and tacks then the average need for speed game, no the word demo is not really suitable.

I could understand if people were pissed if they just called it straight up GT5, but they added the word prologue for a reason.

bornrunnin31
04-15-2008, 03:08 PM
I just want the full game is all. I'm a GT fan, but things like this irk me when they can't keep their game on a reasonable schedule and then decide to charge consumers for an earlier build of it (and if the full game costs $60, then it really is a big ripoff, unless you can upgrade for a lower price, which I wouldn't mind).

To me it seems like a cash-in and a way to distract consumers while they push back the release for the full version even further.

I know they've released a Prologue in Japan for the past two games, but this is the first time in America, where people boycott EA for things like Battlefield's Pay-Per-Weapon, and paying for a "preview" doesn't sit with me.

Dr Mario Kart
04-15-2008, 03:13 PM
Having more content than other full games doesnt change people's definitions of what a demo or preview is. Its a simple matter of X out of Y playable elements being released early. You cant hold it against people if they decide to call it a demo under those circumstances. It just means that both the prologue and the full game are exceptional pieces of software.

InuFaye
04-15-2008, 03:19 PM
People bitch because we don't get prologue and then when they do bring it out here you bitch even more.

GT5 is suposedly costing Polyphony Digital so much damn money to make that they had to make prologue so they could continue making it.

I read that GT5P cost 50x what gt1 costs to make.

I think you calling it a demo because most gt games have enough cars and tracks to put any other racing game to shame it a little bit unfair.

They will deliver. I know it.

Dr Mario Kart
04-15-2008, 03:23 PM
The issue of costs is fair, but in that case, all bitching should be directed at the business model.

InuFaye
04-15-2008, 03:25 PM
I honestly don't know why they dont release GT5P and then release updates via PSN.

It would seem like a much more profitable bussiness model, and they could get the stuff out faster to the people.

GT4 Prologue sold like 3 million copies worldwide (although the U.S. never got it). The reason for making Prologues and Concept cars is because developing a GT game takes really long (and cost more money than just about any other game to develop), so they kind of have to release them or face not being able to release a GT game for around 4 years or more at a time now. The GT creator himself said to design a car on PS1 took 1 day. To design a car on PS2 took around a week or two. To design a car on PS3 takes a few months. Now, if it takes a few months just to design one car (I'm talking inside and outside), then how can they get a new GT game in a decent period of time? I can pretty much guarantee we will not see the main GT5 until 2009 (possibly not until 2010, if they want to have the amount of cars they want along with damage). Online was removed in GT4 just so they wouldn't have to push the game back even further.

And there's also a discussion here that GT5 main is already costing 50X of what GT1 on PS1 cost:
http://www.developmag.com/news/29626/Polyphony-looks-to-PC-game-development

When you think about it though, MotorStorm was $60, had just 8 courses, like 20 or so vehicles, and much less content than GT5P overall (and there was a decent number of people who paid $60 for it). Without a doubt, GT5P isn't a regular GT game content wise (with around 70+ cars, 6 tracks (although reversed too) with online play), it's still pretty good and IMO, I rather have the amount of content it has and online play (which GT4 lacked).

But of course it got slammed in reviews for those short comings (though it still got ok scores) and was quickly made a pack in game.

That said I don't have much problem with it. Though I do see the point of it sucking if they charge for this and then charge a full $60 for the full game.

I agree with Inufaye that just selling the extra stuff via PSN would be a better model. People could then just buy whatever tracks and cars they want. Just has to be priced reasonably.

True.

But selling Prologue for whatever price and then asking for $60 for the full game (which I assume would have all or most of the prologue content plus more isn't going to go over well either.

Probably just waiting to put out the full version would generate the fewest complaints. But of course then you'd have people bitching about having to wait longer.

So they really can't win. To many fickle, whiny nerds in the gaming crowd that wante everything just the way they like it and want it all yesterday.

Okay, so I need games to buy and play, so someone help me decide:

DS - Do I get Rondo of Swords this week for $30 or wait for The World Ends With You next week for $40?

Wii/PS2 - I have FES preordered through Amazon, so that's a given, but... how pick-up-and-play is P3? I'm going to be going through practically a month-long moving process starting on the 28th between painting the new house at the beginning of May and moving in on the 17th, so I won't have much in the way of hours-long play sessions available. Is that gonna work? And if not, is Okami any better, or even worse? Thinkin' I might have to stick with Ghost Squad and GH3.

If I can get GT5P for <$20 I may pick it up (need to find out how good CAG's driving skills are), but until then I'll wait for the full version. If they came out and confirmed they were offering downloads/expansions, I'd be more inclined to purchase.

I appreciate the amount of content that PD packs into these games, but sometimes they just need to be reasonable so GT5 doesn't turn into Duke Nukem Forever. I suppose this is their way of saying "we do have a game, but it's not going to be out for a while. Here's something to tide you over until then, and keep us from going bankrupt"

What about that is fact? Comparing numbers to quanitify content, and numbers as the cost involved, what is opinion there?

GT5 prologue is the worse deal. Not an opinion.Forza 2 has pretty bad graphics IMO, but the gameplay is good. GT5P on the other hand is a huge advancement in simulation gameplay, that's why it is worth it (and the graphics are eye-candy). How do I know how it plays and looks? I did play the Japanese demo before release.

And Jer, please stop stating opinions as facts, because it is just an opinion. Someone stating Zelda: TP on Wii/GC is better than E.T. on Atari 2600 would be an opinion also (although E.T. is one of the worst games ever created IMO, it's just my opinion and so would that, because there might be that person who prefers E.T. on Atari).

IMO, I'd pick Rondo of Swords over World Ends w/You. Just my preference for SRPG and what I've seen of the game. Still, I'm passing on both of those for now. The only DS game for me on the horizon is Summon Knight DS.

The GT5Pro argument really boils down to if you really enjoy GT or not. If you do (as I do) then you'll just buy it as there's no set date for the full game. If you don't care for GT, you won't.

And if you're cheapass (as I am) then you'll try to find ways not to pay the MSRP.

Wow, the EOJ bundle is just $23 @ GS? And the GR trade-in credit is $36? I will need to investigate this.

Also, I will import Initial D. Thanks, MM!

And funds are ok if you don't have the time or inclination to research individual stocks on a regular basis. It's hard to find a good one with high enough return and low enough fees to make it worthwhile, though.

Picked up Gears of War at a pawn shop today for only $20, which is a steal.

I had the PC one, but it was an extremely shitty port and nobody played online... I really liked what I did play online, the one time I found 2 other people also online.

So, looking forward to some Gears online... it still seems active, hopefully all the shitheads moved on to CoD 4 just leaving the cool folks.

Nintendo US is really going backwards with the fan service. I can understand why they dropped self-publishing the magazine, but I never did get why they never opened up a member's only store or rewards program like Japan has. I can only assume that it's either too cost-prohibitive, or else NOJ corporate doesn't want it to happen for whatever reason.

I guess if you really wanted one, you could get some deputy service to win one off of yahoo Japan or find a friend in Japan to pick one up for ya...

Killer7 is actually good. In fact, I'd say I'm enjoying it more than No More Heroes. The fact that there's only one guy out of seven that's really worth using in your average encounters is a little annoying, as are the occasional infinite respawns and the fact that I have to invert the Y-axis every single time before playing, but it's still... actually good.

Hm...on one hand, this looks very exciting.

On the other hand, I thought the DBZ games looked exciting, but those played like shit or were otherwise boring.

But on the promising side, Cyber Connect2 is doing the developing, and while I've yet to play any of the Naruto Ultimate series on PS2, etc., I hear those are pretty good, or at least pretty popular.

 my dad is playing Gears of War PC and seems to really like it. Then again, he just played Kane and Lynch last month and didn't like it...

I had Gears of War for the PC, and it was a mess. Stuttering up the asshole while it loaded a new level, which shouldn't happen because this PC is awesome, and has handled every other game I've thrown at it with flying colors with all settings maxed (everything except for Crysis).

Even turning down all the settings still didn't fix GoW... and from the few other PC forums I go to, the general consensus was that it was a very shitty port. Epic never acknowledged any problems and never released any patches at all.

The extra chapter was cool, though.

The online sucked ass because PC users aren't going to pay for Gold, and let's be honest, the majority of people who bought it for PC waited for it because they don't have a 360, and have no interest in Gold. It's the same reason Universe At War failed so badly on the PC.

At this point, I'm done with console ports to the PC... I have all the consoles for console games, and a PC for PC games. Mass Effect could be excellent but I'm not willing to give it the benefit of the doubt, after too many shitty console ports. Rainbow Six Vegas, Gears of War, I was burned twice too often. And it doesn't help the PC version comes out months (or years) after the console ones.

I think Gears of War was the start of me thinking "Hey, it seems Epic has stopped caring about the PC"... I had such high hopes for GoW, bought it the day it came out and everything, only to find the 360 version is superior.

This week, the patch is supposed to be coming that gives us a new map, gametype mode, weapons, and achievements!

tf2 on 360 doesn't even compare to the pc version.

having a mouse and keyboard changes the game dramatically. 360 feels slo-mo playing on sticks. it's okay for halo / cod but something fast like tf2, the sticks are just fail.

also lag seems better but that's just me.

my mains are medic / scout / engineer. i prefer medic because a good medic makes a huge difference compared to a sorry medic. i like scout for the hit and run tactics (i know how to totally rack up assists! hahah) and i usually play engineer when no one else wants to.

When game companies don't announce in advance its hard for me to give a crap. Only Nintendo is in the position where they can afford to announce 3 months in advance, and then ship.

I've learned to just not buy a console until at least the first price drops as you can then gage if there are enough good games to warrant buying it, and a lot of the good earlier games will be cheap as well.

I don't care much about hype. All it takes is reading about a game on here or seeing good reviews to get me interested enough to check it out (especially if there is a demo). A lot of times games are announced to early, get too much hype and I end up dissapointed as they game can't live up to the hype.

I really like sim-style driving. I get a big rush when I apex a turn perfectly... might not be for everyone, but I'm just saying. Then sometimes I think, well... what if I could open up the throttle here more with having it oversteer? Maybe if I adjust the suspension...

However, the AI in these sim games always disappoint me. What's the point in trying to pass a car without touching it when they just ram you off course anyway? Or I'd trail a car so that I can pass it later, but when their brake lights go on and I hit my brakes on my super optimized car, I always end up ramming them and sending them off course.

And they really gotta do something about these races so that they're more fair. There's no benefit to using a similarly powered car as opposed to an overpowered car, and since the crappy dumb AI isn't rewarding enough to beat...

It seemed to me that forza did a good job of keeping you from using uber-powered cars with it's performance racing system, not just on their horsepower, but other upgrades and handling. The first half allowed you to get by with faster cars than the competition, but it keeps being more and more restrictive.

I like that forza allows you to make it as simple or as complex as possible. You don't have to touch any of the tuning stuff, and I love the racing line indicator. The customization is so badass too.

Netflix has definitely slowed down my buying. In the high 200's in DVDs owned, but probably have bought 10-15 tops since joining Netflix finally a bit over a year ago.

Been gaming and doing other stuff more than watching movies lately though. For the 5 years or so before last year dvd watching was my top in house hobby by far. Didn't do a lot of gaming, just spurts here and there.

IMO, the MGS 4 extras aren't worth it at all. A soundtrack I can probably already rip off the net? 4 chapters of some graphic novel I could also probably find elsewhere? A making of video that will be ripped to the net after a week or so?

IMO, the Fallout 3 CE is the only one worth it - Vault Boy bobblehead? 100 page hardcover art book? Awesome metal lunch box?

I like CE's that offer something that is tangible - I wish I would have got the Bioshock one.

IMO, the SC 4 LE isn't worth it either. It costs companies like $2 to throw in another DVD with some making of footage, yet they charge us another $10? And lately, it's been another $20 - $25??

The MGS 4 stuff isn't worth another $25 to me, should have just put the bonus stuff on an extra DVD instead of a Blu-Ray and dropped the price $10. The only reason I'd consider getting one is because crazy people will pay big money for it in 6 months. I'll take that $25 extra and get a whole other game, other than a fancy box with extras I might use once / if ever.

I'm the same way, but I do play a decent amount of PC games. I just like to upgrade when I don't need to. Why do I even need a quad core? Yet I'm itching to buy one.

I'mma need some more HDD space for my PC. I just read the Mass Effect system requirements and while they're not too high, what kills me is the 12 GB install.

There'll definitely be another Metal Gear. Kojima said that this is the end of the Metal Gear Solid series. So I'm willing to bet there will be more. That is, after Metal Gear Solid 4 Substanance or whatever it will be called. Now with VR missions!!! I just want the movie theater mode back from MGS2S. My friend and I spent hours putting the green soldier with the yellow visor helmet in different places and joking that it was the real Halo 2. Seeing "Master Chief" in Vamp's place destroying some soldiers is classic.

I whoopped Samba De Amigo's ass on DC using a controller, since I was too cheap to buy the maracas.

If you're planning on doing any shopping, this thread (http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=161266) should help you out.

There's lots of touristy stuff in Times Square, but I much prefer the Rockefeller Center area, which is just east of there. Still tends to be crowded, but the architecture is neat, there's Top of the Rock (http://www.topoftherocknyc.com/) (fantastic views, plus it tends to be less crowded than the Empire State Building), the Nintendo World Store, and a handful of museums a few blocks away on 53rd (MoMA and others).

If you're willing to walk up a few blocks more, Central Park is nice.

There's plenty of stuff I'm probably forgetting. Anything in particular you're interested in?

I managed to finally beat Breath of Fire IV. The final boss was kinda easy, and the ending was decent enough I guess. At least I can mark another RPG off my backlog list. Now, I guess I'm gonna dive into my third playthru of Final Fantasy IX. Its been about 4 years since my last playthru. I believe it has some of the best cutscene CGI graphics for the PS1.

From what I read, alot of the Tales of Symphonia sequel will stay true to the original. Which is a good thing, since ToS was such an awesome RPG. I guess we will see more of this at this year's E3.

People seriously use the multiplayer in Tales games?

You're right it didn't have a good story. But the plot was secondary since the entire game was about the characters. Especially obvious when the main plot ends halfway through, and you start the character quests. And it succeeded there since the game has the best characters of any RPG since Suikoden 2. The depth and personality they gave to each character was excellent.

Every RPG has stupid characters.

My advice is that if you don't like MGS, then you might as well not even bother with the other two.

Which reminds me, I've yet to touch my MGS collection. Maybe I'll crack open MGS and play it.

If you don't like the first one, don't bother.

Speaking of which I think I'm going to try and put myself into a coma until MGS4 comes out.

final stage in Days of Ruin, whoo!!

I just OWNED stage 25!! I was one step away from capturing the base,

but there was also only one enemy left... and within my attack range so I went for it instead!!

I haven't been playing any games, but it's legit. In financial management, I thought I was gonna be getting a B, but turns out I'm gonna have an A unless I fuck up the final like hardcore.

good to hear Chac. My last class is this monday and I have to animate an entire flash based website of barn animals before then. I'll be at school all day tomorrow working on it.

Flash is cool to work with, but can at times be insanely annoying unlike After Effects and Adobe Premier etc...

I'm taking my game system to the computer lab tomorrow but can't decide what to bring... my PS3 or dreamcast? help me decide.

Dreamcast is easier to carry around. So that. Play Jet Grind Radio.

hmmm dreamcast is definitely alot easier to carry. I wish PS3s were lighter.

also, why the fuck does Bionic Commando Rearmed look so damn good? I've never been so excited for a downloadable game as this (besides TekkenDR)

also, play the gameboy color one if you have yet to.

weird thing to is that i've never been a real huge fan of bionic commando... I probably will get the new full release game as well.

I was happy to hear Rearmed is coming out on the PC. Not like I wouldn't have bought it on a console, but at least I know which version to get for sure now.
