Still, everytime you mention the thought of GFC self sustaining I get really giddy. I always find it fascinating when a company can be built from literally nothing and become a self-sustaining income for your entire life... Screwattack did it (thanks to AVGN), CheapyD did it, destructoid did it, and a bunch of other blogs.

Even though I love studying medicine, owning a self-sustained video game related business has always been my dream job... I've tried multiple times, but have never successfully gone anywhere with it to the point where I can no longer justifying paying for hosting to practice coding on.

Goomba, by the way, did you ever decide on a name for GFC that wasn't so misleading?

It's not a really unrealistic dream if you ask me. The way I look at it, I make around $400 a week at my Poker job working 30 hours a week or so. I could make that in theory getting 150-200 orders a week with GFC. Granted, it's a lot more than 30 hours of work probably at that point, but working from home and not having a boss over your shoulders is a nice benefit of course.

My only real issue with it is that once you choose ANY medium as a business and not a hobby (gaming for example) you lose a lot of what makes gaming fun :) I am literally surrounded by games in my office here, but I haven't played a console game in weeks (Unless you count 1 Vs. 100 on Xbox 360 which we played for an hour the other day). This probably has a lot to do with me being married and working two jobs though. If GFC was my only job, then I'm sure I could sneak a bit more gaming in ^_^

For now I am going to have two services:

GFC - GamesForCanada.com - The Oldie but Goodie. I'm going to keep this site as video games is still our main product we sell.

Opening in January 2009 is "FashionForwarder.com" which is going to be our clothing/fashion themed service (we get a LOT of clothing orders actually) and that won't be country specific.

Then in January/February 2009 I will be making a third site that will be all-encompassing. I will use the same services for all three sites and they will be virtually clones of each other, but it will help branch my services in new directions without being misleading/confusing. You'll see. I know I can pull it off ^_^

Gohastings has some pretty good steals on last generation games that you can't find at EB anymore. While the stand out gems arn't there like Fatal Frame, Shin Megami, etc., there are some sleeper hits at a decent price like Beyond Good and Evil, Soul Reaver 2, The Suffering, etc.

Other than the sleeper hits, I don't think there is much in terms of live deals yet. Amazon is, as of right now, the saving grace for Black Friday as nothing interests me yet.

Apparently guys, some of you are having some problems with ordering from Amazon.com with my UPS address. If they ask you to add 4 digits to the end of my Zip Code, that's fine (the numbers are 06226-1100 for the 9-digit Zip Code). For the phone number if they ask you can use my number (it's at the bottom of my PDF invoices I sent out. If you need it you can ask me via PM or you can just use your phone number. Either way). I'm at $67.50 with 6 games. Those $3 games quickly add up to $7-8 with shipping to Goomba + his service charge + shipping up here. Still cheap for some great games though.

Sadly I don't have a decent printer, and I'm far too picky to want a game without a box...

Absolutely! So guys just so you know. Tonight I am unboxing, tomorrow I'll be out of town visiting family and 2AM or so Friday morning I will be up taking live orders for Amazon's Black Friday sale. There will be a lot of sales this weekend thru "Cyber Monday" so any sales going on will likely sell out rather fast. Amazon is the main one to check as they have free shipping, no tax and great prices. Stores like Best Buy tend to be a lot of in-store only deals which I can't get and they charge shipping and 6% Sales Tax. NewEgg is good but again sales sell out fast. Goomba: I was wondering the most efficient way for this to work. As a new member, you don't know me from a hole in the ground, and it being Black Friday week you're going to be swamped with orders from customers with a good track record. What's the best method for me to get in on the action for some Black Friday sales? My brother plans to come over and do some live shopping tomorrow night/friday morning (I'm in Vancouver - I believe a lot of the sales start at 2am PST).

I'm curious what the best way to go about soliciting your services is. I realize you're going to be incredibly busy, but am wondering if you're accepting new clients during this crazy time of year :)

And yes, if you order something and it turns out too expensive to ship then I'd have ask you to pay return shipping to the company. That's something you need to realize when ordering to my UPS store obviously. I charge fair shipping prices as you know, but for the convenience of ordering yourself you do have to remember that I'll have to manually type in your shipping invoice + service fees separately. Thank you. Another question: I was reading the forum and had put it in my mind that I could pay for all of this through paypal. Obviously a lot of sites don't deal with Paypal (paypal is linked to my bank account - I'm not using any credit cards tonight) so I had the idea that I could just send you money rather than order things on my own.

But again, that was a relatively ill-thought out idea with how busy you will be yourself online tonight.

My brother has filled his cart to his heart's content at MMAwarehouse.com, and now I'm ready to pay for it all. Thing is, it's just shy of $300 US worth of clothing (9 items). Shipping it all to you is fine in one order.

My question is how to get it out to us from your place. Sending that much clothing at once will certainly interest customs. I'd rather not have to pay another $100 (roughly the savings during the sale) to get it from the post office. This would make buying it pointless.

Do you utilize methods whereby, you would send 1-3 items at a time, thereby avoiding hefty/any duty fees for situations like this?

Let me know the best way to continue. Also, I can send you the money via paypal right now and have you complete the order if you are available to do so or can try doing it myself and shipping to you if they allow me to do that.

Before I do anything though, I would like to know if you'd be able to split up the order and if that would work in avoiding heavy duty fees.

Guys! I survived Black Friday and the insanity at work. As you know, last night I was up with you from 2:00 AM - 4:45 AM which was fun, even if the deals were a slight bit disappointing this time around. Then I went to sleep for 3 hours, got up and went to work for the special Black Friday Poker Tournament. Worked my whole shift, met my college friends for the first time in 9 years and saw an awesome They Might Be Giants concert to boot. Now I'm back home, I have nearly 50 Direct Requests, another 20 or so packages that came today and over 100 Emails. CHAOS!

The good news is I survived :) I'm working the next four days and then on 12/04/2009 - 12/09/2009 I will be out of town visiting Los Angeles and the Walt Disney Animation Studios to see their new movie "The Princess and the Frog". It's a once in a lifetime chance to go so I'm dying to get out there before it's too late.

Keep in mind I will be processing as many orders as possible this week inbetween work. If you have an item you want and can't order yourself then use the DR form but realize I may be a bit slow to get back to you with so many of them. If you have a time-sensitive item you can use the UPS account I have (info listed on the front page in the first post on this forum thread). If you have any questions let me know. Thanks!

Actually forgot to note, 1.03 wasn't the worst. It was when it was offering 1.01 that i was really mad. Around that time, it was when my friend was going to send me money in CDN & I told him 2 send it to me in USD cause he'd be losing money (since all his paypal funds were in USD) & I'd even be willing to pay the difference, but he chose not to listen :(.

Long story short, never convert down & then back up. That's just feeding paypal more conversion fees. (so evil -_-)

Also, I paid like $80 for Modern Warfare 2 for a a Direct Request order. I got the item but then they wanted to cancel the order. Thinking I could recoup the cost of the game I put it on eBay. It sold for the full price but the guy never paid me and I had to relist it. The second time around I lost almost $30 on it. This is specifically why I cannot buy items for people before they pay for them and why I have to keep the service charge if you cancel on me after I have ordered an item. It just sucks for me :(

Oh and RoganSarine, I double checked and I did in fact pay you the $27.99 for the eBay item on 11/12/2009. It was in the form of a Paypal Refund in case you didn't catch that. Yeah that does suck that you didnt get that much on the SF4s (probably because of the announcement of super street fighter 4, but $30 for the 360 version? seriously?), and I could understand your policy on getting money first & then buying. Yeah I ended up spending a lot of money on street fighter 4 (namely i bought the EU collector's edition as well as buying up the blu-ray/soundtrack from someone locally for $50 thinking it would be worth something). I figure if you can sit on the stuff long enough, it will appreciate eventually, but if you have to sell now, then you're screwed if the price drops in the meantime. The stuff I've been buying, I'd hope I'd be able to hang on to this stuff for at least a couple of years then sell it off when it's either rare or appreciate in value due to it's age. So, point being, never give up! If you can hold on to the stuff long enough I think it will always appreciate in value (this applies mainly to LEs & such but you never know).

Example 1: Eternal Poison, having multiple price drops all around & me buying them at launch for full price on the speculation that they would be worth more in the long run (currently looking like a dud, but if I'm lucky the price will go up eventually ...)

Example 2: Shin Megami Tensei Devil Summoner 2, also bought at launch, & hoping will appreciate in value somehow (right now, not as good as I'd had hoped but presumably, in the future, it will get better somehow).

Example 3: Buying copies of the Tales of Vesperia Special Edition hoping they will go up more as well (they might, as long as the PS3 version hasn't been announced, with a special edition of their own).

Example 4:Buying SF4 CE material (like mentioned earlier), basically a bust, but maybe it might go back up one day?

Sure. I've got a gotanime membership from them before. It saves you 10% percent on anime/manga mainly. I like how some of their deals can actually overlap with the gotanime membership discount.

BTW, what do you mean forward? The main importance of the card is the membership number (which is a 5-digit number). Would you like me to photocopy/mail/email/PM the card/number to you if I get it?

Oh yeah something to note (message was quoted from an email I got from them):
"Hello Chris,

Got Anime memberships are tied to your address. Your discount will be automatically applied without using a number as long as the same billing address is used. Puppetyuber, one other thing. GCO takes up to a week to clear (they deposit it to my bank account and not to something similar to Paypal that is immediately accessible). So just keep this in mind. I should have enough funds to buy your items now (though some have gone up in price as you said), but in the future use GCO moreso to pre-pay for items rather than for DR's on limited-time offers as it's very similar to accepting a money order. telepathy, the Right Stuf customer service just called me and they're not going to allow me to pay with my credit card and ship to you. Here's their exact words:

"We normally don't ship to foreign countries when the shipping address is different from the billing address. And technically Canada is a foreign country".

Furthermore, they said I haven't really ordered enough from them to establish a real relationship for them to base it on and it sends off a lot of red flags in their system. I had her talk to her supervisor and they said they can't allow it. They can ship it to me and I can ship to you, or they said potentially I could get you a pre-paid US Credit Card that you could use to ship to yourself, but they won't let it go through the way we tried to do it.

I told them to put the order on hold and wanted to talk to you about the options. Let me know what you want to do. Sorry they're being difficult about it =P

They will, but i explained earlier that I wanted to use my USD funds from paypal (which they don't take) & I do not have a USD credit card or bank account. Like I said though, if it's not possible I'll just order it with my account then. I just wanted to see if it would work.

(They offer free shipping to Canada but only if you buy $150+ )

There is a link within Paypal. Sign into your account and there should be a side option that says "Apply for the Paypal Credit Card". If it doesn't show up then you may not be eligible to apply. Otherwise just Google "Paypal Credit Card". I believe it is done through Chase.

I used to have the standard Paypal Visa but they cancelled my account and my wife's for no reason. Once I paid it off down to $0.00 balance they just cancelled it =P Bummer. The rewards ones are the ones that are hard to get by the way, the standard one you may be able to ^_^ Best of luck!

telepathy, if anything, you could try to get a Paypal debit card which works as a Mastercard with your balance being your limit. Although that may be limited to the Premier account and above. I've had one for about 6 years now and am grandfathered into the 1.5% cashback (might be 1% now) when using the card. It works great with Amazon.com as I've used on an order sent to goomba recently.

I will just deduct Paypal fees and 15% of the ending price and send you the rest (or give it to you as GFC credit, either way). Just keep in mind there's always a small risk that the person will use the code and claim it didn't work and get their money back. Doesn't happen often, but it does happen. Another busy day. Worked my day shift job at my casino job, got home to a bunch of freshly delivered packages + 20 new DR's. Unpacked a bunch of items, just finished invoicing the new DR's and now I'm back to packing. Looks like I'll be doing this for quite a while ^_^

Tomorrow I'm going to my University job, but there I have computer access almost 24/7 so it helps cut down on time because I can respond to questions/emails and even send out some DR's during quieter times which gives me more time to pack later on when I get home. Friday I'm planning to stay home and pack all day, Saturday will be the same and Sunday I'm leaving for New York City for 3 days. When I get back, it's back to normal. I will ship out as many items as humanly possible!

Maybe this is the kick in the pants to get things really moving. It's a bittersweet moment, but as an optimist I'm going to have to make the best of it.

Thanks for the optimism guys :) Much appreciated. I have been working part time as an "University Computer Specialist" meaning that we basically repair broken systems, put together new systems, build websites (hey! that's where I learned most of what I use on GFC after all), and do general computer support things. It's a great job, I work with my two closest cousins in the same office and I make decent money doing it. It'll be hard to let go, but I knew this day would come eventually. I was hired in 2003 as a special payroll worker and now that the the economy is so bad (my state has all sorts of budget cuts coming up next year), I knew I wouldn't be able to stay forever.

I only work 20 hours a week or so, but I'll have to work twice as hard to make that up elsewhere. Wish me luck ^_^
