Had a tough choice to make today. I recently got a $50 Wal Mart giftcard as a gift and went to pick-up a DualShock3 today. I saw in the glass case they had a FallOut 3 collector's edition for $79.99.

I haven't played F3 and it didn't look as great as I thought it would, so I went with the controller (plus I didn't want to pay $30 out of pocket). I might hold off on opening it until I can manage to rent a copy though...

EDIT: what would you guys compare this game too? It's an RPG, but an FPS as well, right?

Anyone have any general tips for a new game? I should be getting my copy tomorrow and I want to be extra ready.

I have been reading up on gamefaqs and a few others forums as well.http://www.wikicheats.com/index.php/Fallout_3_-_PC_PS3_XB360/Character_Building

Don't put any of your SPECIAL stats to 10, there's a bobblehead collectable available for each that's a +1 so any more than 9 and it'll go to waste. Plus keep in mind that there are articles of clothing that can supplement your stats. I always carry different ones that give different boosts and equip them whenever necessary. For example, I have like five extra uniforms/suits that boost my repair/lockpicking/science/sneak/small arms skills by 5-10 points which comes in handy for skills that have requisites, like picking locks or hacking computers or repairing weapons.

I wouldn't bother with Luck at all. Put at least 4 points into Intelligence and purchase the Educated perk ASAP. I personally boosted my Strength so that I could carry more weight, Agility so I could be more effective in VATS, Endurance to up my HP and Intelligence to 9 boost my medicine/repair/science skills and so that when I level up I get 19 points minimum to spend instead of 11. The bobblehead for Intelligence is available early in the game when you get to Rivet City.

I would also avoid any perks that offer a direct XP bonus, there's a level cap of 20 which isn't hard to hit at all so you won't need any help with that.

Along the way you'll run into rare bottles of Quantum Nuke Cola. These are blueish and if you find any you should hold onto them. There's a quest that rewards you for collecting 30 of these. Same goes for "Pre-war Books", but instead of it being a quest there'll be a NPC that'll pay you 100 caps for each one you collect.

I would also look up the quest related perks since they're basically free stat boosts if you were gonna do the quest anyways.

http://www.wikicheats.com/index.php/Fallout_3_-_PC_PS3_XB360/Character_Building#Quest-Related_PerksI can agree with all that except the part about not bothering with Luck. I didn't touch it my first playthrough, but after adding it to a second character noticed that my critical hit frequency shot waaay up. Combined with the fact that having a good number of points towards Luck (6, I think) grants you access to the Scrounger perk - that lets you pickup considerably more ammo than you normally would - I'd say you don't want to completely ignore that S.P.E.C.I.A.L. attribute.

I dunno, there are only so many special points available and it doesn't seem to offer much in return compared to the fundamentals. As it is I dumped 3 into luck at the very beginning and I kinda regret it. I was thinking about that ammo perk but I was able to make do by diversifying my small arms and eventually I was drowning in 10mm/assault rifle/shotgun ammo after hitting the right sidequests. Just today I went from 100 to 800+ A.R. ammo by scavenging.

I do have more fun, though, with Luck being a factor with the ammo increase and with the Mysterious Stranger perk on 8-)

I would advise that one put 6 in luck so that you can get the Mysterious Stranger Perk when you hit level 10! I am actually quite far into the game, 15 hours or so, and I am going to start over I think. I am really not satisfied with some of my stat alignments and such.

Hmm, I hated Oblivion...

I did too. I would say it has the interface of Oblivion without the boring, empty, lifeless world. It has a great story, good music and top notch humor. Also you can blow people's heads up and they will explode into many pieces and you can see eyeballs flying out from the mess. It is hard to get into at first, but once you get the traveling down the game picks up and is very enjoyable. This is easily up there as one of the best games I have played this generation.

In the abandoned house there is a few items you can interact with. When you use them they make a tone, whenever you go out of order you hear like a buzzing sound. Keep trying out different combos with them, starting over if you ever get them wrong, and then a console will uncloak.

While I enjoy the game, I hate the arbitrary ass skill requirements for the hacking and lockpicking. Why should I have to have 100 skill points to pick a lock/hack a computer when the fucking sequence is the SAME? They should've just made the lock picking harder at lower levels and gradually get easier. Same for the hacking.

Also, the repair system is whack. I hate equipment degradation.

Toaster Driver
11-03-2008, 03:33 PM
the degradation sucks, but i mean it does add to your strategy...i like when i'm running from like a deathclaw and my gun jams cuz the condition is like a tiny sliver of a bar...that's a great feeling. luckily i have a "friend" with me ;)

The animal friend perk is pretty nice. It's helpfull for when you travelling between towns or in unknown areas as you don't ahve to worry about some crazy warewolf type thing jumping you from behind. I just got this perks and when I went into a building there were 5 mole rats, none attacked and I was lik e"what the" then relized why. I then proceed to blow their heads off for some easy point blank XP but if I didn't have the perk they would have been a bitch!

I went through the first two hours of this game trying to be a good Samaritan, trying to have great karma...but once I got to the first town (I don't wanna spoil anything), I stole a glass of milk, the residents starting attacking me, and I ended up slaughtering everyone.

They aren't so bad if you max out your small arms. Can usually take them out in 1 V.A.T.S. with a combat shotgun, sometimes it may take an extra hit so I'll try and get one or two in before I jump into V.A.T.S.

There you go, don't go around stealing other people's milk...

Awesome game. It's almost everything I've ever wanted out of a post-apocalyptic game.

Crazy situation Somehow, my last save had me exiting a bunker near the Washington Monument and being surrounded by several minigun-wielding super mutants. Running low on energy, ammo, and first aid I attempt to retreat to the bunker I had just exited only to find myself gunned down by a couple of mini gun mutants. Needless to say, I was stuck between a rock and... well, 4 super mutants wielding incredible amounts of firepower. I couldn't run, I couldn't fight back, and my last save was over four hours ago. I was screwed.
Lacking the firepower to fight back, and being too weak to make a succesful escape, I decide to use my cunning. I entered the bunker and quickly hid in the shadows ( I was discovered in my first few attemts). From the darkness I observed the mutants as they patrolled the bunker. After observing them for a while, it became clear that a few strategically placed frag mines might injure the muties enough to balance the playing field. Long story short, one by one, mutie by mutie I fought my way out of the bunker and through the mutant infested trenches.

Dogmeat dieing may be realistic, but honestly...

Is anyone out there going to be playing have him die and then not reload?

What they should have done was make is so there were multiple places where dogs will spawn. Only one dog in the whole game that befriends you is wack.

I hate how buggy the game seems so far. I've already got stuck (literally stuck) in two areas. One time I got stuck in a while doing the "Those" side quest. The other time I got stuck between two different level rocks near the Anchorage Memorial.

Had to restart my last save because of it.

if that's about tranquility lane, i'm pretty sure it's a debate he runs through, when/if you talk to the crazy scientist guy after killing everyone via the computer thing he says he's basically putting them out of their misery. and if you do it that way you get no bad karma, killing all the residents with your bare hands will get you bad karma

You know what's missing from this game? Groin shots. In Fallouts 1 and 2, you could target the junk, which would usually knock enemies down, or unconscious. (You could also target the eyes for massive damage, and blinding opponents)

One other minor quibble: I think Bethesda missed the point of Tagging skills. In 1 and 2, in character creation, you tag a skill, you get a bonus to the skill, same as 3. When you level up in 1 or 2, a tagged skill means that every skill point you allocate adds 2 percent (instead of one, natch). Like I said, minor thing.

I'm seriously digging the hell out of this game.

Anyone know where to get more ammo for the fat man? Guess I'll use it exclusively for those.

There are 71 mini-nukes total in the game in different locations. I Found the Super Mutant Behemoths (meaning the big ass ones) not that hard, more so just hide under a building or doorway and unloaded my mini-gun into it.

Funny enough, I had the female Brotherhood of Steel member with me at the time. The cage opened up without me initiating it and my dumbass teammate ran in there, got cornered and kept getting punched in the face, even after I had told her to stick to ranged attacks. Only time she got her ass kicked like that, had to reload my save and tell her to wait way back because of that and the pathfinding at the rocks around the mill being terrible.

How long did it take you to kill him that way, Scorch?

So encountered a bug today in the Big Town quest

So after you bring back Red and the dude, they ask how to defend themselves. So my character had the science answer with having them build robots. Everyone goes to the junkyard in the town, and no robots...ever!

I reloaded after a while, but was sad because I saved in the middle of the station and took my time sneaking around in there. So in the end I just had to defend the town for them.

I just started this game last night and am about an hour in it...is it just my Samsung DLP or are the characters really dark at a lot of times? Get an ally such as Fawkes or Jericho and sit back and watch the show - especially Fawkes - because allies are usually pretty strong against tough enemies.

Fawkes is a beast. After I beat the game, I pulled out my Experimental MIRV and fired it at Fawkes feet and he lived. Granted with only one bar of health left, but he survived 8 mini-nukes at the same time with my 100 Big Guns skill giving the Experimental MIRV 1600 damage or so.

He's pretty good at tanking Super Mutant Behemoths. However when I went after them while I had him, they had a tendancy to knock him down non-stop. Regardless I had 100 Small Arms at the time and just spammed my Combat Shotgun to perserve my Mini Nuke ammo for no particular reason. Took around 25 shotgun shots and Fawkes to take one down.

Dogmeat is anytime you're out of Vault 101. (He's not a "party member" in the same way everyone else is and is obtainable by all karma levels)

Fawkes is possible near the end of the main quest chain with Good Karma characters.

I've had stuff like that happen before. For example:

I was on a quest to kill certain people once and when I entered one of the targets houses, there was a Mirelock Hunter in there wailing on my target. The hunter won easily and made my job that much easier. Pretty damned amusing too.

The hunting rifle is a beast, but really more so in v.a.t.s. The clunky combat outside of vats makes it some what hard to use effectively.

The Chinese pistol is definitely shitty! It's strange though, because the gun it's designed after (Typer 80 pistol) is actually a powerful weapon in the realm of hand guns.

What thing that kind of chaps my ass a bit is the lack of accuracy with the sniper rifle at great distances in v.a.t.s. It seems to be no more accurate than the other rifles despite it being a equipped with a scope and being called a SNIPER rifle.

ratzombie
11-06-2008, 05:11 PM
Well it's just that the damage is so crappy compared to the 10mm, and for me the Chinese Pistol is harder to come by so I can't repair as easily as I can with the 10mm. With such reduced damage, I figured it would of had a faster firing rate, or better accuracy, but according to that weapons sheet it just sucks.

I love the Hunting Rifle, I can't wait to get the Ol' Painless since it's supposed to be like the Hunting Rifle but better. And the Combat Shotgun is also awesome, I tend to use the Combat Shotgun when they are close and then use the Hunting Rifle from afar.

I completed the fire ant quest for the first time, yesterday. That kid can find his own home. I also shot Powder before he could shoot the sheriff (but I did not shoot the deputy). Great game nonetheless, just wished the main storyline had more substance. There was potential for something climatic to happen, but it never did.

Go here (http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_3_quests) and check the quests as you get them (there are spoilers though, so be careful. Just skim the sections for any mention of bugs or quest skipping). There are some game crippling bugs you need to watch out for. They're rare, but serious. This site is constantly being updated, and I have run into a few bugs that haven't been logged yet. If you find anymore that aren't on this site, I recommend editing some of the articles to warn others.

Yeah, that's a known bug. It ends the quest, blocks off GNR, and disables the achievement. I highly recommend reloading an old save.

If you're on that quest, do not talk to Dr. Li in Rivet city before going to the GNR studio. It ends the quest, you don't get the achievement, and you can't go to the GNR studio, which also eliminates another achievement because you can't take part in a certain battle outside of GNR.

I repeat, I highly recommend everyone check this site (http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_3_quests) for bugs before doing any quests. This game has a lot of bad bugs. Hopefully they'll release a patch soon.

Are you certain is actually disables the achievement? I talked to Dr. Li and skipped along the main story that way accidently but went back and talked to Three Dogs at GNR and still got the achievement "Following in His Footsteps". Then I completed the GNR quest and went back to side quests and exploration.

Granted I do have the PC version, but it seems odd a bug like that would differ through platforms.

It doesn't effect any quests, so it's all up to you whether you really want to or not. I believe he holds a unique shotgun or something that's pretty nice though. At least I don't remember him from any quests.

There might be another way to get there that I'm unaware of, but I'm pretty sure you have to go to the metro near Rivet City (L'Enfant South) to get to GNR. That's a good map, but it's misleading because there are some places you can only get to through metros, and it doesn't seem to point that out anywhere.

I'm on 360, and I just keep Dogmeat in my house. I'd like to walk around with him, but eventually, he's going to die, then I will be sad and load up an old save and lose a lot of progress.

Nuka Lurks were the worst!

They were easy for me, but then again I was level 18 at the time I went there I think. My closest near death experience was probably:

During the Oasis sidequest, I had just finished up the objective. I was fairly low on health as I was somewhat high level during the time and encountered Mirelurk Kings and Hunters non-stop through the place in mention. Then as I went into the next room I jumped down the hill thinking I was near the original entrance (which I may of been), but instead I was greeted by two Mirelurk Kings and two or three Hunters. In about five seconds I was almost dead and didn't manage to kill any in my single V.A.T.S. chance, so I dove into the water and somehow found an exit that lead out leaving me with just a sliver of health.

I could of used one of my 100+ stimpacks at the time, but I generally found the game too easy if you abused them so I try not to use them unless I'm having trouble in a specific battle or in between areas without beds.

It's the game. A lot of people are having this problem, including me. Apparently the game is really prone to freezing. It sucks, I know, but save constantly and you'll be fine. I don't know how bad it is for you, but I can generally play for a few hours before any lockups, so it's an inconvenience at most. I've only lost a fair amount of progress once.

Scratch that. Not quite confirmed yet. I realized my source wasn't exactly 100% reliable, but the patch is likely. I'm seeing a lot of buzz that they'll be boosting the level cap to 30, which I'm perfectly ok with. Anything more would make your character too powerful.

It's been to long I forget where it is but........ Yes there will be lots of places to buy/sell/repair stuff. As well as traveling traders you will run into in the wastelands.

My character is already too powerful. I can't imagine going up 10 more levels.

Yeah, I can see how it would be a little unbalanced. What they should've done in the first place is make the level cap 30 and make each level up slightly less powerful. By level 30, anyone's character will be too powerful, but the problem in that people are reaching level 20 before really even starting the main quest, or any quests for that matter. I'm coming up on level 15, and all I've done from the main quest is travel to GNR.

Hah! Already did that too because my karma was too high and discovered it by accident and I figured fuck it, might as well kill them all. You get the slaves too? I Accidentally killed one with my mini gun.

Na, I freed one or two, but that was before I started killing the slaver. Sooooo, they went into a wall of bullets. I basically bought the kids and sent them to little lamplight and then went back and fucked everyone up

Could somebody please tell me where exactly the nuka cola shipping manifest is?

Also, how do I get into the lock safe on the first floor that requires a key and is there a way to get into the double doors int he lobby with the very hard lock? (other than lock pick at 100)

EDIT: Never mind I got it.

Oh, those double doors just make it easier to get in and out. The shipping is on the the computer in the shipping area of the warehouse, use speech and tell the robot shipping foreman that you own the place and he can make you a key to the safe and give you the password to the computer

Some parts are pretty creepy. Like this part: Inside the Museum of Tech, and you're in the Vault Tech Vault Display as you walking you see blood everywhere and bloody hand prints. I swear something was going to attack me in there. The atmosphere was spooky.

I think that Andale one glitched out on me. I went in the basement, looked around. I go from the basement to the house and look around and realize no one is in the house anymore. I thought it was weird. I left the house and noticed everyone across the street. They all had there weapons out and they were creeping back to the guys house whom I was just in there basement. I played along and pulled a knife out and was creeping with them like I was apart of there gang about to jump someone. I wasn't aware I was the one they were looking for until we got to the door step and the guys turns aroudn and calls me out.

Nope, not a glitch. It's supposed to play out that way...
