Anyone else seen any fucked up physics? I bumped into a bus last night and it launched about 150yrds away! It was epic!
Yeah, that's happened to me. The other day I was just walking along when out of nowhere I get blindsided by a car that was somehow launched at my head.
I was killed instantly.

The ending of this game makes little sense considering the play mechanics:

Otherwise, Got all the bobbleheads and major achievements out side of the Karma based level ones. Fun game, but flawed.

Possibly a bug?
- You need to talk first to Tenpenny about letting the Ghouls move in, before talking to the other residents. Not doing so prematurely may close the diplomatic conversation options.
- If you turn Ms. Lancaster into a slaver and then rescue her back, she will not have all the dialog options. You will have to kill her to convince Tenpenny.

Just kill her.
I ended up killing Tenpenney's bitch ass before the I did the quest, so Gustavo was in charge. Gustavo will in no way allow ghouls in, so you have to kill him, and it all works just the same.
You can either kill a person or talk them into it. They both lead to the same conclusion. I hate how you can do the quest for tons of negative karma, but at best you can only go neutral karma if you're good.

Being day out is a coincidence. Your pipboy being overly bright is a glitch and changing the color and what not isn't going to help. In most cases you'll need to turn your game off and turn it back on.

I got to Rizet (sp?) city, and I gave the water to Carlos, but then couldn't find where Rizet (sp?) was. I knew it was on the airplane hangar, but couldn't find the entrance. So, I ended up swimming in the radiated water around the whole hangar and saying to myself, wtf?

Here's a tip for somebody who doesn't want to level up their speech but still wants the benefits. If you save before talking to somebody with a speech choice advantage (sometimes if you talk to someone and you notice this option, you can back out of the convo) just keep choosing the option and if it fails reload (takes maybe five, ten sec) and try again. It's a little annoying but it allowed me to focus on other skills that I needed to level up quickly.

There is no use for either, once you beat level 20 then you no longer need xp, and when you beat the game you won't need any more bottle caps/ you can scrounge for items and save them if you already have the good guns

I didn't try the 3 days thing (was really hard to get out from the science lab, without getting killed), so out of frustration I used a Stealth Boy. Oddly enough, the agro totally reset. Ok, I just got this game last Friday and have put around 6 hours into it. I haven't read any of the previous posts b/c I'm afraid I'll run into spoilers. So anyway, here's the question.
Is this game really hard (at least early on) or do I just suck? I'm currently in Megaton and about the only quests I have been able to complete have been the easy stuff, i.e. disarm the bomb, get radiation poisoning, etc. The most difficult quest I have completed is probably the Mega Mart one.
I think I'm at level 4 right now. Should I just be wandering the wasteland outside of Megaton and grinding my levels? I have a few guns, all of which are damn near broken, and very little ammo for any of them.
I'm just not sure I am playing this game right at all. I like it, but it is certainly slow going.

If you're not using VATS for almost all of combat, then you are playing wrong. You'll do more damage, and save way more ammo. Playing it like an FPS is just going to waste all your ammo. Keep your weapons repaired, they do more damage.

Yes VATS is what you should be using every chance your AP is high enough, esspecially onlower levels.
Once you get to about level 5-6 things start to get a little easier.

11-24-2008, 02:43 PM
Thanks for all of the replies. I was using VATS 99% of the time - although at first I didn't realize you could string multiple actions within one VATs turn. I thought you could only do one action each time you enabled VATS so that was hurting me.
I finally got on a roll at lunch and completed the Fire Ant quest. I also completed the land mine quest and took out the sniper that was there so I have a sniper rifle now which is awesome.

Well, after you play a little more and come to a point where you better understand the game you could start over. I started over when I was about level 10, and was able to really set myself on a better path as far as stats and perks go.
Don't waste perks on the ones that offer extra experience. Once you're level 20 it'll just be a big fat waste!
Set all your S.P.E.C.I.A.L stats at 6 at least. There is a perk for each attribute that requires it to be at 6 and they are pretty good/cool (Mysterious Stranger anyone?) for the most part.
As far as your tag skills go I would recommend "Small Guns" for sure. It applies to most available fire arms at the beginning and in general the best and most practical weapons fall in this category. I would also choose repair, as it's incredibly useful to find other weapons and be able to repair your own when out and about. Finally lock picking, it'll give you access to locked containers and rooms which tend to have the most loot. Tagging speech in place of lock picking or repair would be a good choice too.
In my opinion there really aren't any other skills worth tagging at the beginning. I found to sneak to be pretty useless over all. If you need to sneak then throw on a "stealth boy" and call it a day. I have never been in a situation where hand to hand or melee were better options than guns so avoid those, unless you are wanting to be a melee guy.
Just read the descriptions of the skills and get an idea of what you think will be useful.
Just start out on the right foot and all will work itself out.

One additional note... if you really are having a tough time, you can temporarily change your difficulty setting. The default is Normal but you can jump to Easy or Very Easy for the beginning levels.
I wouldn't recommend keeping it there the entire game or it will become incredibly easy. I am level 20 and playing on Hard and most encounters are still trivial and I rarely die unless it is to a random missile flying out of left field.

It's possible to have 500 different save files if you wanted to.
Ah, 500 is the maximum amount? I'll make a note. After beating the game, I ended with around 150 saves. Now that I'm just messing around and trying to find extra goodies, I'm around 175.

My game arrives in a few Days and I'm gonna play on Easy, not normal or very easy just easy.
Don't want any mutant ants or flies to kill me as I walk to another location.
As Long as I get the ending and Achievements Easy is just fine.
You might get awfully bored as the game goes on. I was a walking death machine by level 14, and once you hit 20, you're basically unstoppable.

Yeah you can't play this like an FPS, you have to use VATS... they will claim it's optional, it's not.
That's not quite true. two of my twitchier friends played the game using vats like 10 times total. I saw him pull off a crazy shot with a sniper rifle on a super mutant without it. and you know how difficult aiming can be in Fallout 3.

What an amazing, fantastic game. I'm glad I'm at the point that I can put Fallout away for a while and get to the other games I missed in it's wake (Left 4 Dead, Gears 2, LittleBigPlanet). I'm sure I'll come back for another run at some point, though.

I'm really excited by all the DLC descriptions. It seems that with both Operation:Anchorage and The Pitt, they won't be significantly changing the Wasteland map (I assume that O:A will have the BoS reveal a combat simulator and The Pitt will add a trade caravan/raider camp where you travel/are kidnapped and taken to Pittsburgh). These would work for the geography of the game because the first was hidden from you and the second is a temporary thing. It makes sense that you wouldn't have found these on your previous trips through the Wasteland.
With this in mind, It makes me very curious to see how the Broken Steel DLC will work. With its description stating "Continues the adventure past the main quest" It seems that it would take place in the Wastelands area. Will they simply drop the assets in and explain it away that the Enclave had 2 top secret bases, 1 of which you just never noticed before? Will you travel to another location, like the Commonwealth, to fight the Enclave? What I'd secretly love to see is them fast forward a few years and set the Broken Steel DLC there. This would explain the Enclave reestablishing themselves and could make for some really cool experiences. Even something as small as having grass growing in areas of the map because of the new Project Purity provided clean water would add a lot of meaning to what most look at as a kinda crappy ending to the main story line. The amount of work to do something like that makes it completely unrealistic, but it would be cool.
And possible the most important question to ask about Broken Steel DLC, Since your character might be dead at the end of the main quest, who will you play as?

I have encountered the following glitch near the beginning of the game
I went to find Walter after I finished fixing the 3 leaking pipes in Megaton. I spent at least an hour looking for the guy before finally finding him underneath his house. He was dead. Apparently there is a spawning problem in Megaton where a few of the NPCs can spawn in the wrong place and die.
Is there anything I can do other than loading a previous save and making multiple saves more often? If they release a patch could he come back to life?

If you are playing on the PC (which I am assuming you're not since this is the 360 thread) then you can respawn NPC's or make them invincible using console commands. For the 360 I think you are kind of screwed. Just be happy it isn't a more important NPC that died.

Well crap. I think the same thing may have happened to me because I haven't been able to find the guy either. I'm way too far to go back to that now. I do create a new save file every 10 minutes or so. I roll between around 3 or 4 saves.
Guess I'll check under the house too
EDIT: Yep, he's dead. Coming down one of the walkways near his house I found him lying dead on the side of the screen. I hope there is a patch for this coming, it seems like a lot of people have this issue - and not just with Walter.

I am really enjoying the game so far (PC Version)! I just left the Vault and proceeded to Megaton..
I just did the quest where you go to the market and get food/medicine. Next I did the one where you get your rads up to 600 and go back and get a skill for it. I do wish I had somewhere to store items though but my explosive skill isn't high enough to disarm the bomb and get a house. Also do enemies respawn every time? I went back to loot the store and there were 4 people standing right in the doorway!

The way I understand it, the problem is that when he spawns, he falls through the floor and lands 50ft below the treatment plant. Some people have found him when he was immobile, but not yet dead. When you look at him in VATS his legs are crippled :dunce:

I'm taking this game at my own pace, making bad choices and the like. I'm not rushing through the game at all, I want it to last a while. That said, a question about Paradise Falls.
I accepted the slavery mission, then changed my mind after receiving the weapons and wanted to pay for admission. The game wouldn't let me. Instead, I killed everyone and freed the slaves, getting me huge amounts of positive karma, which is great. Should I have captured the slaves and THEN freed them? Would that have gotten me more money and more good karma, or would the negative karma outweigh the positive (assuming that capturing slaves gave you negative karma)?
Where the hell is my house in Megaton?
When you get into the city, take an immediate left instead of going down the hill. It's there.

I'm really getting into this now!
I am still doing the Wasteland Survival Guide missions. I just went to the mine filled town and disarmed an absolute ton of mines and then traded them for ammo and a workbench for my house. I don't know why but the guy in the town with a sniper rifle didn't even let me talk to him so I had to cut his arm off with a sword and take his gun :-). The only problem I am running into is that my guns are in very bad condition and it is very costly to repair them. I have the repair skill but its hard to find the same gun to use for parts to fix them... Overall this is an awesome game!

Did you go to the Megaton city and try to find some side quests there? Also what weapons are you using? You may want to start over and pick a skill in guns (I picked small guns). Originally I had picked Melee as my main skill and had to start over and pick better skills. Right now I am at level 6 and haven't been having too many problems..

Fallout 3 and I own all three.
Left 4 Dead is a really awesome cooperative game that I feel has a lot of replay value if you play among friends. It also has local coop, but I believe it's only two player split screen and not 3 or 4. Not really a good choice if you're playing by yourself though.
Resistance 2 is kindof a let down for me. I enjoy the single player a lot, but the multi and cooperative is kindof meh in my opinion. Just not feeling it like I did with the original.

Haven't finished the game, yet, but I am still already very excited about the DLC campaigns. They sound like very interesting storylines to experience, and they certainly don't seem to be the usual "Oh, here's another level/mission" we usually get as DLC. I don't know about anyone else, but I would love to play through this scenario, as well...very minor spoilers...
Carol's description of DC right after the bombs dropped sounded like a time and place one would want to play through. The city on fire, and the survivors in utter chaos. A nice touch would be if you went to Vault 101's door and see the people who were carrying the signs that were littering the outside.

However recently several outside vendors have been showing up dead, I keep finding their camel thing walking alone through the wastelands. I killed one of the roaming camels to see what would happen and got a lot of free stuff, but now I'm a bit worried that dead vendors could hurt my game. Anyone know if this will have any effect on the ending or my game? I know one of the vendors got gunned down, because I was there when it happend.

Judging from the box, it's probably a Europe-only thing. I got the PC LE and it was the exact same as the console versions and we also don't use a number rating system like the UK does.
It's rated PEGI 18+. Which to me is making me fairly certain it's an import from the UK or he lives in there. Although it's too bright from the flash to really read the bottom left there.

Dogmeat can be found in the scrapyard. It is located northeast of the Vault 101 area, across the river. It is very large and hard to miss. Dogmeat is pretty much in the middle of the place. You won't miss him.

Its not even a spoiler man. You just go to the scrapyard and walk right up to him.
No quest, no story, no nothing he is just chilling by himself after killing 5 bandits.

The one good thing about Dogmeat is that he doesn't actually count as a companion. So, you can pick up another one. Personally, I think they are more trouble than they worth. After making Dogmeat stay at my apartment, I picked up one of the human companions, and they really aren't much better. I prefer going alone.

The only thing that is somewhat annoying is the level cap being at 20. I got there really quick, with a lot sidequests and a good chunk of the main quest left, so now every encounter sort of feels like a complete waste of my time. I want to move on with the story.

LOL. He's currently chilling in my house in Megaton. I do like to take him on trips to the west where it seems like there are more critters than bad guys (at least in my experiences so far) but I agree overall he is more of an annoyance than a help.
I do the same thing. Dogmeat is purely a house dog. If a future expansion has a leash, well then he'll be getting more use.

So I'm at level 14, and I really want to do the main quest, but I know that it's near the end of the game, and once I do that, then I can't play it anymore. I still have a few more side-quests to do, but they take so long, damn! I love the nifty trick someone shared where you can get the evil, neutral, and good karma achievement really quick by just doing a hard save before, then go on a killing rampage, etc.. and level up.
Holding in B turns on your flashlight, if that helps.
Nah, I figured that out. I'm just going to toy with the brightness options and go from there. It's not bad, it's just that since the color palette is mostly browns and grays, it makes everything seem pitch black at night. Good for dramatic effect, bad for actually trying to find your way around.

There are way more locks than computer terminals in the game. For the most part, you'll usually see either a lock or a computer terminal in the same area, and using either method will grant you access to the next area. However, most locks and computer terminals which usually require a higher level of skill (75-100) do not fall into the same category as the ones stated before.

So the only thing I am not liking about this game is the amount of times I find myself having to go through a metro subway to get places. Yes it makes sense but I would rather not spend 10 hours running through a subway.
I try to avoid it as best I can, I would rather spend the extra time finding a way that isnt underground to get to my location. But some of these location seem to be impossible to get to unless you take a metro.
Can someone who has beat the game tell me if its possible to get to all locations without going through a metro?

I think certain places in downtown DC (like Riley's Rangers HQ, Museum of tech) can only be reached through the subway but places on the outskirts like the library or Rivet city can be reached by taking the long way around. But I never really tried to reach places that seemed reachable only through the subway another way, so I could be wrong.

Thanks to all that answered. I really dont like having to run through subways all day. Thats a slight cop out.
Alright, I am having a problem here.
I seem to be getting a lot of half quest. And by that I will tell you this for example.
I was in Rivet City talking to Banon, he mentioned that he doesnt like Homles and wants me to find something in his room. I was in the middle of 2 quest at the moment so I figured I would come back to it later.
The only problem is that I have no indacation that this ever happened other than my own personal memory of it. No notes, No quest, no nothing.
Is it suppose to be like that? Am I suppose to just remember and do it without a marker or something? This is a fairly big game I doubt that they would want you to just remember video game coversations.

Indeed. Most of the stuff in the heart of the city is only accessible through the tunnels, but plenty of the outskirts can be reached either way. I know that I didn't even realize there was a station near Rivet City, until I needed it to reach another place.

Quests like that are quick, so they don't give you a quest listing for it. There should be a note, though. It is a very quick one, so I suppose the develops expect you to do it right then there. All you do is go to Seawell's apartment, get evidence against him, present it to a particular security officer, and then you collect your reward.

Well now in addition to the dying NPC glitch, I've just run into another one - and this one could screw me out of even more quests.
I'm doing the Mirelurk Egg quest for Moira and I can get in and out of there without killing a single Mirelurk. The problem is that when I exit the Anchorage Memorial the game completely locks up on a black screen and I have to restart the 360. I can load a previous save without an issue, but when I went back to try it again, the same exact thing happened.
I've read that there is an alternate entrance into the Anchorage Memorial near the Tepid Sewers so I am going to try that next, but if that doesn't work, I'm going to be super pissed.
This is a great game, but damn if there aren't a lot of bugs.

Yeah, that is the one unfortunate reality you have to deal with when it comes to games like this. I am a huge fan of the Knights of the Old Republic series, and there are plenty of broken quests and such in those games, as well. I will say, though, that I put a lot of time into this game, and the only issue I ran into so far was one dying NPC. That was it. Not too bad...for my experience, at least.
So, anyway, I wrapped up the main quest last night. Great, great game, as I have said a number of times in this thread already. That being said, the ending was a bit disappointing...
It just feels like that last part of the game was rushed. Everything else about the game was long and epic. Then, you get to the end, and it's like, "Ok, we're done, now." The battle towards the Jefferson Memorial was disappointing, considering there really weren't too many enemies on the way there. Then, when you get inside, there is barely anyone guarding the control room. Wouldn't the Enclave throw everything they have left into protecting that site?

I made it around the glitch by going in an alternate entrance (which also made the quest extremely easy). I don't know if it will still freeze if I exit from the original door or not, but at least I completed the quest.

I had a similar problem for a while - The game would freeze up when I moved between locations. Eventually, I figured out that was freezing on the autosave, which, in turn, would corrupt my autosave. After trying a bunch of different options (clearing cache, moving all game data to a memory card, etc), I found that the problem resolved itself once I deleted a whole bunch of my previous game saves.

I suspect it was the autosave as well since as soon as you enter the wasteland again, the autosave kicks in. I've been tempted to turn off all off the autosave settings since I typically roll 3-4 saves (in addition to the autosave) in case something like this happens.

Just of curiosity, have I totally screwed myself?
I'm still really early in the game, playing around in Megaton. Burke wanted me to blow up the nuke, but the good side of me took over. I told Burke I'd do it, but promptly went to Lucas and ratted him out. Lucas went to arrest Burke, but when he turned his back, Burke shot Lucas in the back with the silenced pistol. I killed Burke (took his gun, as well as Lucas' assault rifle) - does this totally screw me out of anything other than the reward for disarming the bomb?
I need to set up several saves and get rid of the autosave.

I don't think so. I believe Lucas' main point is to be the interface of the bomb quest. I never had any use for him after that. And I'm not sure what it is with Burke b/c I saved Megaton. But you wouldn't be getting anymore from him as it only works if you blew up Megaton. Basically if you blew up Megaton you would get a house somewhere else from Burke's employers.

I did the same thing initially with the exact same outcome. I ended up restarting at an earlier save and doing it again this time not ratting Burke out. I don't think it matters much in the game whether Simms dies or not, but I didn't want it to go down like that.
Another thing to watch out for is NPCs dying. Walter, the water guy died in my town which ended my quest options for him.
bigdaddybruce44

Yeah, Walter died on me, as well. Many of the Megaton characters tend to, unfortunately. They seem to spawn in the wrong spots and then fall to their deaths. Fortunately, Walter doesn't offer much. A minor quest early on to fix the pipes around town. After that, you can turn over scrap metal to him. There are other characters who will also reward you for it later, though, so it's all good.

I don't know if this was a good idea or not..
I went to Tenpenny towers and started the mission where the ghouls want to move into the tower. I am a good guy so I tried to do things as peacefully as possible. First off I couldn't even get to Tenpenny, the guard would not let me. I had to shoot his head off with V.A.T.S. and steal the key just to get to Tenpenny. I talked to him and he said if I convinced everyone to let the ghouls live there then he would allow it. I used my SPEECH on some of the characters and they still said no. I went and killed Tenpenny to get positive karma and then I had no choice but to open the gates for the ghouls to come in (so i could complete the mission). As soon as I got the mask from the ghoul I killed him and tried to stop the monsters from killing the residents. Unfortunately I think they automatically kill everyone because I went upstairs and a lot of people were already dead. After clearing out the area I had to rob everyone since they were dead anyway. My karma went from Paladin to Vault Guardian but I wasn't going to let all those items go to waste!

Finished the main game I thought the ending was pretty good. It doesn't get any better than an eulogy from Ron Pearlman.
Also, Fawkes was there with me at the end. Why the hell didn't HE volunteer to go into the heavily irradiated area? Jeez, he just stood there... not a peep. I asked him about it, but all he wanted to talk about his gun and battle strategies. It's like he was deliberately changing the subject. I'll admit, even after all that we went through, I thought about firing his gold-brickin' ass. I mean, he's supposed to be pretty smart (and not just by super mutant standards), yet he feigned ignorance at a crucial fucking junction.
After a long and awkward pause, I volunteered myself for the task. Resigned with my inevitable demise, I ran into the chamber and initiated the sequence. The water purifier came alive and the Jefferson statue became visible as the polluted water began to clear. I fell to my knees, weak with radiation poisoning and thought I should have used the damn mutant poison...damn you, Fawkes. Much to my shame, I noticed the burly and familiar shape of my mutant friend standing above me.
In the end, good-old Fawkes had walked into the irradiated chamber with me. I'm not so sure that he made it through okay, but having him there made me feel that my sacrifice was, in the end, insignificant when measured against the possibility, the hope that people and mutants might survive and live peacefully someday.

Oh, and I was wearing the Mechanist's outfit and a kid randomly ran up to me and asked me for an autograph. I obliged.

Right now, I'm trying to destroy the source of the Fire Ants in Grayditch. The problem is ammo is really scarce since obviously they do not carry ammo. I picked up the Scrounger perk. So maybe that will help.
Has anyone else got this perk? Is it good or a waste? Figuring out with perk to pick each level is hard!

I didn't get that perk. After having finished the main story and most of the quests, I can tell you that I did not find there to be a lack of ammo in the wasteland. Some ammo is harder to come by, but as long as you keep more than a couple of weapons on you, you'll be fine.
Those fire ants were a pain in the ass. I think they were the hardest enemies in the game... I did, however, tackle them early on while I was a low level.
I suspect that I'll have to return to finish off the queen in order to get her pheromones for those people in rivet someday.
Good times. I'm still playing after completing the mission and logging 67 hours (damn, that's an embarrassingly large amount of time) and having a blast looking for the bobbleheads that I missed in my first go around. There's so much out there that I did not get to see during the course of the game that I'm glad I saved right before the last leg of the main story.

Yeah, the key is being willing to rotate weapons, especially early on in the game. Later, you'll have so much damn ammo, you can use whatever you want. Early in the game, though, I had to keep switching weapons. But as long as I did that, I was fine on ammo. It is very plentiful across the Wasteland. If one is experiencing shortages, you should just walk around the Wasteland and engage some Raiders. You might also want to check out the Super-Duper Mart, if you haven't already. It is part of the Wasteland Survival Guide quest, and the Raiders are using it as storage for a pretty large cache of ammo.
The fire ants were a massive pain in the ass. I did that quest pretty early, too, and they were tough to kill. I used Dogmeat to distract them, and I went on their side, to avoid their flames. Oh, and you don't need to get the ant pheromones from the queen. You can buy them from the drug store (I think) in Rivet City.

I did that quest early on as well and it was a pain in the ass. I never picked Scrounger but as someone else stated, do the Super Duper Mart quest for Moira's Wasteland Survival Guide and you should be able to score some more ammo to use against those bastard ants.
There is something I did use for the later part of the ant quest which really helped:
I had around 4 or 5 bottlecap mines that I had made when I went into their lair. I think I got the schematics to make them from another Moira quest - probably the minefield one. Anyway, they are one-hit kills against the super tough ants that you are going to come across towards the end of the quest.

Yeah, the Super-Duper Mart was extremely helpful. If you find yourself having a hard time dealing all of the Raiders there (there are quite a few), use a Stealth Boy to sneak to back of the store. You should find a terminal with access to a Protectron. Activate it, but make sure to snatch the employee ID from atop of the terminal, so that the robot doesn't attack you, as well. Also be aware that after you clear out the store and are there for a bit (while you stock up), more Raiders will come and realize they have been attacked. Lastly, if you happen to be very, very early in the game and still haven't claimed yourself an apartment, you can use the store as one. Anything you store there will remain, and there is a bed there, as well.

I do have the scrounger perk, and later on in the game, I'm high on some ammo and low on others. I never use laser pistols or laser rifles but I have like 800 ammo for it so I'm using that. I've been using the combat shotgun and chinese assault rifle against super mutants. I think the scrounger perk has definitely helped.
Also, if you do the quest in tenpenny tower and help Roy get in, keep the ghoul mask on. You can wear helmets over it. It makes ghouls ignore you for pretty much the rest of the game, which is very helpful.. especially in the Jefferson memorial tunnels when you have people following you.

I buy most of my ammo, I have so many caps I dont know what to do with them all. But I also store half my weapons at the megaton house
bigdaddybruce44
12-10-2008, 02:43 PM
Well, that also works as the game goes along. You'll have so many weapons and pieces of armor, you should be loaded with caps. I bought all the crap for my apartment, even though you really don't need things like the Nuka Cola machine or the jukebox. I just didn't have anything else to spend the caps on.

Just don't tell Simms about Burke's plan and you'll avoid the whole situation. That is what I did after I got Simms killed the first time.

Well...
First of all, I didn't kill Amata's father when I was leaving the Vault, so he was still the Overseer. I got attacked on sight by him and a security officer, so I had no choice but to kill them. So, Amata kicked me out of the Vault.

I too am somewhat early on in the game at this exact same point and practically have squat for ammo. The Megaton store is out of Ammo because I bought it all and I ransacked the Super Duper Market when I first started playing. I'm down to shotgun shells, some grenades, some melee weapons, and spikes for a weapon I don't have.

If you're having issues with ammo earlier on, and you have already hit up the Super-Duper Mart and bought everything in Megaton, here are a few other ideas:
1) If you don't already know, there are other settlements throughout the Capital Wasteland. Rivet City, Tenpenny Towers, the Underground and other communities will all have people selling stuff, and someone should have a bunch of ammo to buy. Just keep in mind that the places in and around DC might be a pain to reach early on, considering the wealth of Super Mutants present in the city.
2) Don't forget the caravans! Lucky Harith specifically sells weapons and ammo, but I do think I remember getting some random bits of ammo from the other sellers. If you don't know about the caravans, they are sellers who walk around the Wasteland and trade with various communities. If you're early in the game and haven't hit up the other communities, your best place to find one of them is right outside of Megaton.
3) Sometimes, you will encounter people out in the Wasteland who are selling stuff, as well. They aren't part of the caravan, so you will generally find them in the same place. So, if you see a non-enemy NPC, go over and chat. They might be looking to deal.
4) Try farming areas that had easy enemies that dropped ammo. I honestly cannot remember any good place that is close to Megaton, but if you remember an area where you randomly encountered raiders with guns, try to go back there after awhile. I honestly don't know how long an area will be clear, but for instance, I fast traveled to Fordham Flash Field a bunch and almost everytime, Raiders were there. Unfortunately, I think they just have baseball bats.
EDIT: Oh, and also look for the hollowed-out rock around the back of Megaton. I don't remember the exact location, but you'll find it. Just stay close to the city's walls. Inside, you will find a sniper rifle and some ammo. I also think I got a Stealth boy and some stimpacks. A decent find, especially considering the power of the sniper rifle. Should be great when it comes to dealing with enemies you will face early on.

They are north across the river from Arefu ( Can't remember the name of the town you get the quest in ) in the Subway metro. The same metro with the 2 ghouls that ask you to get them sugar bombs. In the empty room in there hideout will be a manhole on the ground. You have to enter there and work your way though the tunnels and you will find the family.
