New Details on the Mothership Zeta DLC:
The next piece of Fallout 3 (http://joystiq.com/tag/fallout-3) DLC leaves the Capital Wasteland and goes a few miles north up. Mothership Zeta will allow The Lone Wanderer to be abducted by aliens on August 3 for 800http://www.blogcdn.com/www.xbox360fanboy.com/media/2007/11/microsoftpointslogosmall.gif ($10, 500 bottlecaps, 20 fingers or 5 Ultra Jet) for Xbox and PC.

Zeta will have players fighting their way to the bridge of a giant alien craft in hopes of escaping and stopping whatever the The Galactic Wanderers are there for. New weapons include the "Alien Atomizer" and the "Drone Cannon." Players will also be able to ally with "an unexpected array of characters," including some from "Earth's past." So help us if we can fight side by side with Abraham Lincoln! "I emancipate you from this mortal coil, alien scum!"

New details on the Broken Steel DLC:
So, you've taken part in Operation Anchorage (http://www.joystiq.com/tag/operation-anchorage) and visited The Pitt (http://www.joystiq.com/tag/the-pitt) and you're still hungry for more Fallout 3 (http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fallout-3) content? Luckily you don't have too much longer to wait for Broken Steel, the third -- and largest -- piece of downloadable content for the game, which will be made available on Xbox Live and PC on May 5.

Not only does Broken Steel add a new main quest line which, at four to five hours, is longer than The Pitt, but it also removes a lot of Fallout 3 fans' major qualms with the game -- the ending. Broken Steel takes place after the original ending of the game, allowing you to continue to explore the world after the main quest line is complete. It also increases the level cap from 20 to 30 and introduces some new high-level perks, armor and weapons.

The original Fallout 3 endgame has been changed, so that three companions will no longer refuse to aid you in your final task. The Broken Steel story picks up two weeks later, with you dealing of the consequences of your actions. Don't worry, completing Broken Steel won't end the game either. The folks at Bethesda haven't moved the finishing line -- they've dismantled it.

As a result of the level cap increase, you'll be facing much tougher enemies. The amount of experience required to reach the new levels is designed to keep you playing the game for much longer than the new main quest will last, which is why new side missions have also been included. You'll be traveling all over the Capital Wastelands again, though things may have now changed to reflect your earlier actions.

New areas have also been added, including the Presidential Tunnels under the White House and the new world space, Adam's Airforce Base. Fans of Dogmeat will be happy to hear that one of the new perks -- "Puppies!" -- allows your loyal pet to reincarnate at a specific location if something terrible should happen to it. Bethesda were tight lipped on any more perk details, but that means plenty of surprises once the content drops on May 5.

Bethesda was tempted to raise the price for Broken Steel, considering the amount of new content. You'll be happy to hear that their madness soon left them -- the DLC will sell for the usual 800http://www.blogcdn.com/www.xbox360fanboy.com/media/2007/11/microsoftpointslogosmall.gif.http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/21/broken-steel-dlc-makes-fallout-3-endless-on-may-5/

Older news:

Here are some new details on The Pitt DLC:

If the wastes of D.C. and Alaska (http://www.joystiq.com/tag/operation-anchorage) just weren't enough places for Fallout 3 (http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fallout-3) fans to visit, then the next DLC pack, The Pitt, for the Xbox 360 and PC should satiate the explorer within. According to UK OXM (http://www.oxm.co.uk/), 'The Pitt' brings the dystopian story of Fallout to 'The 'Burgh (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pittsburgh,_Pennsylvania),' specifically taking place in Steel City's industrial district. There-in lies an abandoned steel yard, a vaguely-described "dungeon" area, and a settlement divided into "Downtown's" slave dens and "Haven's" upper class community.

Other details regarding this March-scheduled (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/07/fallout-3-dlc-the-pitt-and-broken-steel-delayed-until-march/) DLC include new interactive elements with the wasteland scavengers known as Raiders; it appears you can possibly talk with them as opposed to being shot at upon sight. It also seems that Raiders will play a central role in The Pitt as OXM reveals that one major quest involves investigating a Raider boss who supposedly found a cure for mutation. Lastly, new weapons and items are expected to pop up, including the all new Auto Axe. It's apparently a chainsaw-type weapon.http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/13/new-details-emerge-from-the-pitt-fallout-3s-2nd-dlc/

The New DLC packs, The Pitt and Broken Steel are delayed to March and April respectively:

Survivors of the Capital Wasteland will need to wait for Fallout 3 (http://joystiq.com/tag/fallout-3)'s next two DLC packs a little longer. GameSpy reports that the follow-ups to Operation Anchorage (http://joystiq.com/tag/operation-anchorage), The Pitt and Broken Steel, will be delayed until March and April, respectively.

A Bethesda spokesperson confirmed to us the information is accurate. Guess this will give us more than enough time to finish the seemingly never-ending Nuka Cola Challenge.http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/07/fallout-3-dlc-the-pitt-and-broken-steel-delayed-until-march/

Fallout 3 is patched, DLC out on 27th:

http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/13/fallout-3-patched-today-operation-anchorage-dlc-coming-jan-27/

Bethesda just sent us word that the first Fallout 3 DLC, Operation Anchorage (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/08/fallout-3-new-operation-anchorage-screens-broken-steel-lev/), will officially debut on Xbox Live on January 27th for the aforementioned price of 800http://www.blogcdn.com/www.xbox360fanboy.com/media/2007/11/microsoftpointslogosmall.gif ($10, 50 caps or 100 pieces of scrap metal), which will hopefully give us just enough time to plow through the new content for Mirror's Edge and Fable 2.

Additionally, the developer has also pushed out a patch today for all platforms, which, among other fixes, finally keeps those pesky, murdered NPCs dead. Sure beats them coming back from the grave all bitter and willing to give you directions to the nearest hotel. It's the same patch PS3 owners got in mid-December (http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/15/fallout-3-ps3-patch-adds-trophies-squashes-bugs/), so check out the full patch notes here (http://fallout.bethsoft.com/eng/downloads/updates-v1.1updatenotes-US.html).Some details on the new DLC.

http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/12/take-a-look-at-fallout-3s-operation-anchorage-dlc/

Feeling like a feral ghoul? Buck up, because Bethesda has dropped a mini-nuke's worth of screens from its first Fallout 3 (http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fallout-3) downloadable episode, Operation Anchorage. As we reported yesterday (http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/11/bethesda-unveils-first-fallout-3-dlc-will-lift-level-cap/), the DLC is a virtual reenactment of the US offensive against Chinese forces in Alaska from Fallout lore.

What can we tell from these shots? Well, for one, Metal Gear Solid 3's Shagohod is in there. (Okay, just a sort-of-look-alike.) Oh, and there's a new weapon, the Gauss Rifle. Neat! Also: a guy looking at a map and – could it be? – an oil pipeline. Dear heavens. Sadly, there's still no official word on when we'll be able to get all cold and frisky in pre-Brotherhood of Steel power armor. All preorders of Fallout 3 will come with a soundtrack CD:

http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/21/fallout-3-pre-orders-come-with-soundtrack-cd/

There are plenty of reasons to pre-order Fallout 3. Maybe there's a cute checkout boy/girl at your local game retailer that you'll take any opportunity to see or, maybe, it's because Fallout 3 (http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Fallout-3/) is almost certainly going to be completely and utterly rad. Either way, those that lay a five-spot on the game at their local GameStop are going to be walking away with a five-song Fallout 3 soundtrack disc, according to Bethesda's official blog.

As you can see here (http://static.bethsoft.com/blog/fallout_musiccd_sleeve-back1.jpg), there are a few licensed tracks as well as some originals by recently-announced (http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/08/crysis-composer-inon-zur-scoring-fallout-3/) scorer Inon Zur. As you can also see above it's gorgeous and we want it so bad and please Fallout 3 just come out today oh please please we need this please. Please.

Please.A collector's edition of Fallout 3 is being released, here is the article:

Dammit, I knew I should have hit up eBay earlier. GameStop has the details on the collector's edition of Fallout 3 due out this fall, and some of the contents look rather familiar (http://kotaku.com/gaming/fallout-3/the-lunchbox-of-happiness-274060.php). For $20 more than the normal edition ($79.99 console, $69.99 PC), you'll be receiving the much-coveted Vault Boy bobble head in all its encephalitic glory, a hardcover Art of Fallout 3 book, a Making of Fallout 3 DVD, and the game itself. All of this comes neatly packaged in a completely customized Fallout 3 lunch box, which I now have in both broken and non-broken (http://kotaku.com/gaming/e307/and-all-i-got-was-this-stupid-t+shirt-279065.php) varieties, thanks to the lovely folks at Bethesda. This is one collector's edition that seems well worth an extra $20, unless of course you already own half of it.http://kotaku.com/378937/gamestop-details-fallout-3-collectors-edition

Here's a hands-on with Kotaku:
WARNING: The following article contains some spoilers. When I saw Fallout 3 at last year's E3 I thought it looked cool but not being one of the cult of Fallout, I viewed it with the same sort of interest that I do most games I know nothing about: Curious, but not what I would call overly excited. All this changed however, this past Tuesday when I headed downtown to check out the new build of the game that Bethesda was showing off.
From a training system tied to a child's development to the fifties-meets-Steampunk look of weapons, Fallout 3 may not have a solid date yet, but after seeing this build, I can honestly say I am well and truly smitten.

After skipping through the opening cinema which we had seen previously, we got straight to the beginning of the game which I have to say was one of the cleverest set of training levels I have ever seen. You start the game as an infant just being born. Once you have been birthed, you meet your father who had the pleasure of delivering you. A series of dialog choices allow you to choose the sex of your character and his/her name. Then a "Growth Projection" machine is brought over to show what your character will look like when they "grow up." Here you can customize the look of your character by using the many features or simply choose a pre-made character. In an interesting mechanic, the choices you make in creating to your character will be used to create the features of your father, who's face (at this point) is covered with a surgical mask. While in this infant mode, pressing the A button will elicit crying from your character.
Soon you have grown up and you're are now a year old. Your mother is nowhere to be found, but your scientist father is at the ready to care for you. (Pressing the A button will give you baby's first word, Dada) After a series of simple tasks like playing with your toys and opening your playpen, you can explore the room a bit. Now it's time to start picking your character's base attributes. This mechanic is accomplished by the ingenious use of a baby book you find lying on the floor. Each page has a different attribute along with an explanatory rhyme. Here you can add or take away attribute points to suit the way you want your character to advance.
Look at that. Our little boy is growing up so fast! It is now your tenth birthday and it is celebrated by your father and friends with a party in one of the rooms of Vault 101 where you currently reside. The momentous occasion is marked by the receipt of your Pip-Boy 3000, a wrist accessory that will remain with you for the rest of the game. The Pip-Boy 3000 has many of uses for interacting with your character as well as emitting light for use in those darker areas of which there are many. Apparently there is another training level where you turn sixteen and are presented with a BB Gun which will help you train up in your shooting. Unfortunately, we didn't get to see that one but instead, fast forwarded to check out some of the real meat of the game.
The next level we were privy to was a Junkyard scene where you meet the dog who will soon become your companion. Once acquired, your best bud can help you find food, chems and weapons. He can also come in handy in a pinch by helping you attack enemies. But, be careful to keep him healthy because he can die if not properly taken care of. If things get too dangerous, you can always have him wait nearby or send him back to Vault 101 where his safety will be assured.
Now we get to the really fun part, the combat and enemies. As any of you who are familiar with Fallout will know, your enemies are mostly radiated mutants or "ghouls" as they are called in the game. There are various strata of ghouls ranging from simple ones who still have some of their functions and can actually be spoken to, to glowing ghouls who are so infected that they practically leak radiation. The ghouls can use this radiation power to harm you while simultaneously healing themselves and other ghouls around them. But ghouls aren't your only worry, the Brotherhood of Steel is roaming around causing trouble as well and you will often come upon two factions locked in battles of their own.
Taking down these enemies is a snap (well, maybe a few snaps) when you make use of the myriad weapons at your disposal. Weapons can be purchased, stolen or taken off of conquered enemies and it would behoove you to get as many as you can. I really loved the design of the weapons themselves, they really exuded a sort of "SteamPunk" style melded with an almost fifties style. Everything looked as if it was cobbled together from what could be found around the devastated environment. (The Fat Man Rocket launcher was a particular favorite of mine) And of course, as you all know by now from seeing the screenshots, the environment is a fictionalized Washington DC that has been ravaged by nuclear war.
The combat moves beyond the simple point and shoot with the use of Action Points. Your character has a set number of these points that can be used for various actions that target certain parts of an enemy's body. Once an enemy is targeted and the proper buttons pressed, the various body parts of said enemy will light up showing you the percentage chance you have of hitting that body part. Then you are free to deploy those Action Points and watch your enemy's limbs and head fly off in all directions. This mechanic is made even more interesting by pulling you out of your regular first person mode into a third person camera mode that will allow you to see more of the delicious mutant killing action. Once the Action Points have been spent, they will regenerate over time, but using your weapons and running around like a madman will slow that regeneration down.
Of course, Fallout 3 isn't all killing and nuclear mutations. You also have the added pleasure of being able to upgrade you character using experience based skill points to bump up your various skills. There are also Perks that can be used to add to your base abilities and allow you to beef up parts of your character that might have been neglected when you first created it. You max out at level twenty though, so be sure to spend those points wisely.
Everything I saw about this game was impressive, but what really got my attention was its overall art style. The optimistic fifties design juxtaposed against the destroyed landscape is a great choice and is seen everywhere from the HUD to the atomic design of Vault 101. Seeing it sprinkled around the world gave me the same feeling I got the first time I saw the art-deco wonders of BioShock. It's nostalgic yet at the same time seems so fresh and new because we rarely see that style of design in modern games, especially FPSs. It also gave the design team a chance to inject the game with a subtle humor that is evident throughout, even seeping its way into the dialog choices and sound.
The team is still on target for a release in the fall of this year but we still weren't able to wrangle a solid date out of them. One thing we did hear however, was a promise of a hands on at E3 so you can bet I will be signing up for that one.http://kotaku.com/378147/growing-up-with-fallout-3

As I am a fan of the original Fallout games, I can't wait for this game to be released. The graphics look really good, and I like the idea of a first person and third person perspective. Fall 2008 can't come fast enough.

Geez, I hope it's not Gamestop exclusive. I'd rather get it through Amazon with my Prime account (overnight shipping is $4 I think). I'll probably hit my local Gamestop tomorrow and pre-order just to be safe.

OH MAN! I cannot fucking wait for Fallout 3. 1 & 2 are at the top of my 'best of' list. I've never cared about CEs before but this one is really tempting. (I like GTA, sure, but do I need a security deposit box? not really).

That Art of Fallout book is making me drool, though: I love that sort of thing.

Yeah, those days sucks. I will definitely pick up the collector's edition of Fallout 3. This is awesome.

The first two Fallouts were RPGs. The third one is going to be a combination of a RPG and a shooter. You will be able to travel around in either 1st or 3rd person, but the battles with be in third person. The battles will be in real time with an over the shoulder camera angle like in Gears, or Resident Evil 4. It will have some RPG elements, including being able to level up (the highest level is 20.)

For a game that's getting so much hype, i'm surprised that nobody has posted in this thread in over two weeks. Looks like a 10/7 release date, that's only two months away.

I have to admit that i'm getting swept up in the hype and may buy near the release, but having never played Oblivion i'm not 100% sure. This setting definitely looks more my style though.

I'm assuming everyone here that's excited about this has already invested 100+ hours into Oblivion?

I've invested over 100 hours in Oblivion and will be picking this game up... but I won't be spending nearly that much time as I did with Oblivion just because I don't want to do it again. I just hope Bethesda keeps supporting this game with DLC (new cities?) and don't release stupid DLC such as horse armor or like a wizards tower type DLC.

I'm starting to look forward to this. I loved the shooter/RPG hybrid gameplay in Mass Effect as I have no patience or interest in turn based games anymore. And this looks like the shooting gameplay will be much more refined vs. the rudimentary shooting in Mass Effect.

Probably through it no my x-mas list as I should be done with Gears 2 single player/co-op by then.

Fallout 3: The result of Oblivion raping Bioshock.

I actually am looking forward to this game, even though I was initially disappointed that it seems to be such a departure to the series. I felt the same initially about Bioshock, but quickly got over it and ended up loving it for what it is, not what I initially wanted it to be.

Has anyone made a comprehensive list of the all of the preorder specials? Just by going through this forum, I've noticed that Amazon has a special Survival Edition with a clock, GameCrazy has a Vault Boy keychain, Circuit City has a $10 gift card, and Gamestop might just have the standard CD/poster combo? I'm not sure.

Anyway, can a list be added to the first thread just so we can keep track?

Here are the sources so far:

i'm eagerly awaiting this game for sure. the september issue of PC Gamer magazine (available now) has a walkthrough of some early missions in the game and it looks astounding! xbox 360 version should be just as good, of course.

after logging over 200 hours (yea, i'm a nerd) in oblivion, i'm ready for a new, huge RPG to explore, and Fallout looks like it will deliver.

oh and i preordered at gamestop and can't say i'm too impressed with the extras. the cd has 5 songs that i'm sure will be great in-game but are sorta lame just listening to them, imo. the poster is small, but pretty sweet i suppose.

at least it didnt cost anything extra, i'm just waiting for the actual game!

Out of curiosity, anyone have speculation on what version will run better between the PS3 and 360 versions?

As usual, I'm struggling with deciding what version to get. I don't care too much for the 360's d-pad, but I'll live with it that version runs more smoothly.

I figured Oblivion would be a good measure between the two, so that led me to preorder the PS3 version. Would like to hear any other thoughts, though.

Has anyone seen the PS3 version running? It seemed like on all the websites covering E3, all the impressions were based on 360 builds of the game at the MS conference and on the show floor. Since then, I've seen no new coverage. I'm also up in the air on which version I'm getting.

I don't care about DLC. I generally prefer the 360 controller. I preferred the PS3 version of Oblivion because they significantly reduced load times. (I played through it and the Shattered Isles expansion on the 360 once, and then picked it up again on the PS3 when it got cheap, and I'm about halfway through the game again.)

Has anyone heard/seen anything comparing builds of the two versions?

(Please no PS3/360 sux posts). I don't want flames, just info.

I really don't think there will be much difference. Probably some graphical differences, but that's probably it. Which might make it harder for you to chose...

The more I see about this, the more excited I get. This is like the perfect combination of Oblivion and Bioshock. The stunning, endless gameplay of Oblivion, and the mysterious, alluring setting of Bioshock.

This is one of my most anticipated games of all time. I'll be in line at midnight if I can.

Or it's a great addition to the Fallout series...?

It's interesting to see both perspectives. There are those who are looking at this game from the not having played Fallout view, basing their opinions on what they know about Bethesda and how Fallout 3 is similar to other games, which is what you said. Then there is the Fallout fan perspective. I am really looking forward to Fallout 3 because I am a Fallout veteran—I guess that's a good description—and because Bethesda makes great games.

There are a few bits that worry me because I think they might take away from the Fallout-ness, but Black Isle Studios isn't around anymore so I'll take a Fallout 3 from Bethesda any day.

Welp, count me in... just dropped my pre-order cash down on the table today. I'd been sitting on the fence for a while and just went with it. I'm actually glad to know that the overall scope will be smaller than that of Oblivion. I like the idea of a sprawling, open world as much as the next guy, but I also like to just get on with things. And of course I also prefer pneumatic fists that allow you to punch someone's head off to swords.

By the by, I've used my Nuka-Cola bottle opener twice already... it wins my vote for Most Practical Pre-Order Bonus. :)

has anyone read the new EDGE 60 minute REVIEW (http://www.edge-online.com/magazine/fallout-3-the-first-60-minutes?page=0%2C0) in this month's mag? I read it today and it's not good. They're saying the VATS system isn't that great. I don't have any past game play, so as great as it looks, I'll wait until the ratings start coming in. plus, with gears 2, fable 2, and prince of persia, no rush jumping into this monster of a game too...

I'd like to know this also,... If I'm going to devote a ton of time to this game, I don't want want to quit the game every time my nephew or my girlfriend walks into the room. I consider it a courtesy not to gross people out when they watch me play games. It's not a deal breaker, but considering its length it would be nice.

I'm curious to see how combat plays out in the third person perspective. Most videos have shown combat in either first person or vats, but not much in third person.

I'm in the same boat. One TV in the house, so if I want to game, she's going to be using laptop in same room. I have no doubt she'll give me shit if game violence is stupid or unnecessary.

Also, I appreciate that they intend to make a dark & gritty game (and respect that they are sticking to the tradition of violence in the original games) but I do find it a little off-putting at how awkwardly the violence has been used as a marketing point in the lead up to release. There are a few moments in the E3 Microsoft demo and gameplay videos that had me rolling my eyes. Hopefully without the voiceover commentary from developer, these same moments don't come off as lame in actual game.

Went to Metro Center and checked out the ads. Pretty impressive; can't say that I ever expected to see a game advertised in there. It's pretty entertaining to watch people give double-takes at the ads as they walk by, especially the posters that have images of the Washington Monument and US Capitol in ruins.

They said the game is not perfect, it does have flaws but over the 40hours of there run through of the game... not too often you see a game like this made.
+A genuinely compelling story that you want to follow.
+Massive, rich world that you'll explore for a loooong time.
+Intense, challenging combat.

While I'm hoping for more, simple "Oblivion with guns" would still be better than a large portion of the games released in any given year. For me Oblivion without guns was in my top 3 of 2006. (oblivion, Zelda:Twilight Princess, and Gears of war) Bully and Okami receive honorable mentions.

Shacknews Review:
http://www.shacknews.com/featuredarticle.x?id=1037

(it's been taken down by the way)

Fallout 3 is a PC game.

Sure, it's an Xbox 360 game, too. And it's a PlayStation 3 game, I guess. It's also an RPG, technically.

But when you get at the heart of it, Fallout 3 feels like a game designed for the PC. It has the soul of a big-boxed, full-manual, five-CD game from 1998. It has all the complexity and addictiveness of a System Shock, or a Deus Ex--or, yes, a Fallout.

And when I say "game," I mean it in the most ambitious sense. It's the kind of title that rekindles that 90s spark of imagination, when the borders of gaming were less defined, and anything seemed possible. From the opening moment, it's the kind of work that has you thinking: "Goddamn--this is a real game."

Not just another collection of cutscenes and shooting galleries. Not just another roller-coaster ride with a slightly different track. Fallout 3 is a deep, interactive experience; a compelling blend of crafted art, inventive quests and open world freedom.

Less a ride and more a trip down a lazy, apocalyptic river, Fallout 3 has a strong current in its central quest line. But it's the option of abandoning the raft--and killing your raft-mates, and stealing their stuff, and selling it to a zombie trader for a quick buck--that makes it something gamers should not miss.

Above all else, this is a game to savor.

Developing this version of Fallout 3 was a brave choice by Bethesda. When most players aren't even finishing directed, non-linear shooters like Half-Life 2, creating a vast volume of content that the majority of owners will likely never experience seems a risky business decision. Why even give us the option of passing by so many wonderfully designed quests?

If I was Todd Howard, I would have shoved every single shred of dialogue in the player's face. I would have pushed every encounter and bit of backstory onto the main path. I would have squeezed every development dollar for all its worth.

Instead, if you're anything like me, you'll likely miss a lot of Fallout 3 on your first play-through. After 12 hours of gameplay I was already watching the credits, but had barely scratched the surface of the available content.

The game carries you through its multi-faceted wasteland at a good clip, leading you by the nose with main quest elements and big green map markers. For a while you're caught up in the middle of it, ticking off the pages of the quest log like the pages of a good novel. You can get swept up in the story from the first beat.

Though identical in function, Fallout 3's introductory sequence is a huge improvement over Oblivion's, both in terms of character development and pacing. Starting out in the world as a newborn child in Vault 101, Bethesda brilliantly incorporates the process of picking character statistics and learning movement controls into the experience of growing up. WASD movement is learned as a baby, crawling across the floor and making goo-goo noises with the "E" key. A children's book serves as your first introduction to statistics; an early birthday party brings your first weapon in the form of a BB-gun.

Fans of the original Fallout games will admire Bethesda's franchise faithfulness right off the bat. The same post-nuclear, 1950s-era style informs both the art and the sardonic humor. In fact, a surprising amount of the same themes found in the original Fallouts are presented in this sequel. You'll run across sentient computers and governmental remnants. You'll face down racist isolationists and disenfranchised ghouls, blood-thirsty raiders and sympathetic super mutants.

Of course, Bethesda also puts its own spin on things. Signature Fallout entities, such as the armor-clad Brotherhood of Steel and the Ghoul Underworld, are explored in detail. A countless amount of story materials exist to be discovered, some of which delve into mysteries already established by Black Isle's previous games. For example, a computer terminal in a newspaper office--a building that one might simply pass by if they weren't careful, and which serves no purpose other than to provide backstory--contained several articles pre-war articles, one of which explained how the US annexed Canada.

Just knowing that this material exists to be discovered can be enough to make the world feel like a real location, rather than a mess of buildings and AI characters. Even if you don't stop to explore a single house, the fact that there might be something to find behind those doors makes it that much more exciting of a game.

Most importantly, the richness of dialogue options and quest choices lives up to the Fallout standard. And while the quality of voice acting does not always live up to the original titles, this can be partly excused due to the sheer volume. Fallout 3 contains an enormous amount of characters, each presenting a satisfying number of dialogue paths and quest twists. It's a mind-boggling piece of work when examined as a whole.

It can make for some mind-boggling decisions when playing, as well. Save-loaders are going to have a difficult time with this game--those players who can't resist exploring every branch of every quest may find themselves torn, reloading the game repeatedly to take a different path. Players that can't decide whether to be a nice guy will have it even harder. At one point I found myself spinning off into evil for several hours, wiping out an entire town--including some very important quest-givers--just to see what would happen. As it turned out, I survived, but it was certainly more difficult to solve those quests.

The game does an admirable job of providing a large number of approaches to each quest. Generally each choice applies to a good, evil, or neutral approach to a situation. However, although your "karma' is tracked based on your good or bad deeds, it's less transparent than something like Fable II, never showing you just how many "evil points" you've earned. Fallout 3 also offers plenty of chances to escape from a situation using only dialogue, a feat mostly predicated upon your speech skill.

But amongst all of the varied characters and clever quests, the star of the game remains the world itself. To me, the wasteland of Bethesda's DC is far more captivating than any generic fantasy setting. There is a gritty reality to it that enhances almost every moment of outdoor exploration. Just staring off in the distance at the ruined hulks of our iconic national landmarks can be entrancing.

Bethesda's artists deserve an enormous amount of praise for pulling off such a compelling world. Making a collection of burned-out buildings and rocks into a beautiful, but believable landscape is no easy task, and the team exceeded my expectations. Oftentimes I found myself stopping in the middle of a long journey to admire the apocalyptic view, even as I was attacking by Radscorpions and other friendly wildlife.

Speaking of attacks, players will be faced with plenty of enemy encounters as they explore the wasteland--some random, some scripted. Often you'll simply run across packs of human raiders battling it out against Super Mutants. Other times you'll find innocent victims being held hostage by Super Mutants in disheveled houses. As you must first walk to a location before you can fast-travel to it, these side-shows serve as entertaining--and mostly optional--distractions to break up the long journeys.

If pure exploration isn't your thing, the combat is entertaining enough to compensate. While I was skeptical of how the slow-motion VATS system would impact the flow of the game, it works quite well in practice. With a press of the spacebar the game freezes, allowing you to target an enemy's head or leg. More often than not you'll go for a satisfying headshot, but immobilizing an enemy's leg or weapon-arm can also be a wise choice, and satisfying--watching a hobbled Super Mutant futilely amble toward you is a sick pleasure.

True to the Fallout style, players will have a huge amount of options when it comes to character builds. As always, a high speech skill level is preferred, allowing for far more dialogue choices during quests. Beyond that, it'll be up to your preferred play style. Specializing in stealth, demolition, giant guns or computer hacking can all be advantageous depending on the situation. The game is balanced such that you can choose enough of these skills to feel diverse in your powers, but not all-powerful.

Now, if I was looking for a reason to dock percentage points from a great game, I could pick out some flaws in Fallout 3. The stiff character animations that often lead to embarrassing mid-hallway collisions. The repetitious dungeons, in the form of the ghoul-infested metro tunnels.

But despite its flaws, the game more often surprised me with its polish. Every time I tried to creatively "break" Fallout 3, it defied me. When I jumped into a slave pen from above, trapping myself inside, a guard was triggered that opened the door from the outside before attacking me. When a quest took me deep into a dungeon, and then left me wandering all the way back out after completing it, the game interjected with a scripted sequence that whisked me off to another location--one of, if not the only time this happens in the game.

As you may read in other reviews, the ending of Fallout 3 is an abrupt, unsatisfying halt to a fantastic experience. But as with all good things, the journey is the important part, and it simply should not be missed. This is a game that can be played and replayed. Even the plodding nature of your character's movement speed seems to be Bethesda's way of telling us to slow down and smell the Brahmin.

So get out there and explore the edges of the wasteland. Take your time. Games like this don't come around every year.

Fallout 3 is something to savor.

Fallout 3 is out today on PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3.

A note on platforms:

First of all, the PlayStation 3 version isn't an attractive option, considering exclusive DLC is lined up for the 360 and PC versions.

Now, I played through Fallout 3 on the PC. While I have not played the final version of Fallout 3 on the Xbox 360, I can make a few recommending statements based on my experience.

The game's UI and controls work perfectly well on the PC--the "A" and "E" keys provide easy loot and dialogue solutions--so that shouldn't factor into your decision. Regardless of that, I far preferred using a keyboard and mouse to control the game, especially in combat situations.

Load times on a high-end PC were mostly instantaneous, and even going from a major town into the wasteland only took a second or two. I can't speak for the final 360 version, but outside of the option to install the game on the 360 hard drive, load times will almost certainly be higher. And on a solid PC, with 4X AA and a widescreen monitor, Fallout 3 looks as good as it's ever going to get.

More than that, as I stated above, Fallout 3 just feels like a PC game. This is an immersive FPS in the classic sense. It's a game to be played a few feet from a monitor, with thick headphones clapped around your skull--preferably in the dark.

Even weighing the presentational advantages of a home theater setup, for me, the Fallout 3 platform of choice is the PC. If you have the means, I highly recommend it.

For the west coasters or anyone I guess wondering which to buy here are a couple pics. The lunch box is a full size kids lunch box and the game case sits inside with just a little wiggle room on each side. It has the outer clear/artworked slip cover like most CEs but I left that out. Looks pretty cool and the artbook is 95 pages and the bobble head is like a heavy plastic.

And for the people mentioning waiting on theirs to come in the mail.... The game inside is a SEALED normal edition. ;) UPC code is: 0 9315512680 0

Put about an hour in. Man, this game has a wickedly hilarious sense of comedy that I wasn't expecting. The shooting feels a bit weird, then again using BB Gun when I got a pistol, but other then that pretty damn fun. Though all the talking and such makes me think of Half-Life, which isn't a bad thing.

I'm thinking of picking up either this or Fable 2. Can anyone who's played both shed any light on the core differences?

I mildly liked Oblivion, but not that much. I found the combat, stealth elements, and NPC conversations horribly clunky and not at all fun. Yet I still enjoyed wandering about the land seeing all the sights and sounds. Once I discovered that I could run faster than most enemies, I found myself frantically scrambling through the oblivion gates, checking my map every 2 seconds as I would when playing a Silent Hill game. Once I started "breaking the game" by running through it, I found it much more exciting, oddly enough. In other words, the game seemed broken in a lot of regards, but it was so ambitious that there was at least some way to make it fun for anyone. Not worth $60 for me, but not bad for $30. Fallout 3 looks much the same way, so I'm wondering if others who didn't love Oblivion (but also didn't hate it) feel differently about Fallout 3.

Haven't played the first Fable, so I have nothing to compare Fable 2 to other than Oblivion. I'm leaning towards buying Fable 2 over this, but I'm pretty on the fence. Any advice would be appreciated.

Only thing I do not like is that they give you enough skills to choose from to last you til level 50, however the cap is level 20, so you can only maximize a few of the skillsets and 20 or so perks.

You can maximize most skills, possibly even all if you build your character in a specific way. Heck you can maximize more than half (EDIT: Just checked, 6 + Almost another full one) skills even without perks or books/bobbleheads.

Anyone understand how selling stuff works? Do you get the same trade in value across the board? It looks like every possible trader has a set limit of money/caps and once you sell him that much he'll take your stuff but he won't cash you out anymore, is that correct?

Also, after your initial stat loadout you can only add to your stats(Agility/Luck/Intelligence/...) with special perks and by collecting bobbleheads? Thanks.

Yes. There's one bobblehead for each stat and skill (7 stat bobbles and 13 skill). I believe they raise a stat by 1 and a skill by 10.

There are also books for each skill, but I don't remember what the exact amount they raised the skills by was.

Got my Amazon Survival Edition...

The Pip Boy 3000 "Alarm" Clock
-LED Screen isn't so hot. It's that kind of semi-gloss plastic screen that can scratch easily. NOT that you should be wearing this anyway...
-It says not to wear it, but you totally can. But I don't think it really snaps and closes properly.
-The Halo 3 cat helmet had better quality, thicker plastic. This isn't too bad. I'd say it's your typical toy plastic helmets, fake army or cowboy guns, etc. But I was expecting a little more weight and durability to it.
-Uses 3 AAA batteries...hope those last long.
-I was under the impression this was an alarm clock, but the instructions say nothing about that feature. Oh well. At least I have a clock to put on my nightstand.

About the CE: I didn't know the lunch box was like Assassin's Creed size. I thought it was a full size lunch box (like those Princess Peach or Mario DS boxes). I was concerned b/c the Pip Boy + CE was packaged in one cardboard Fallout 3 box that had another cardboard slipcover.

I'm not normally strategy guide guy either, but if it's the right price or looks nice I'll get it. They have a hardcover special edition version. It's definitely a nice book, and it has a large world map on the inside that isn't attached to the book so it come out without damaging anything. It's large enough I might actually put that thing in a frame.

Not really. It's a WHOLE lot more.

From the Gamespy review:

Yes, Fallout 3 is a lot like Oblivion (with guns!), but it's a superior game in nearly every way, as it features a more engaging storyline, impeccable presentation, and hundreds of hours of addictive gameplay. While the jury is still out on whether or not hardcore Fallout enthusiasts will accept the game as part of the storied franchise, Fallout 3 is a must-have title for most RPG fans, as well as one of the finest games of this generation.

I would have to say that I have probably a good 15 hours into this game and I am about 3/4th of the way through the main quest.

Really, Fallout 3 and Oblivion are totally different beats, even though they do feel a lot like each other at times.

Overall it is a really great game. The game starts off a little slow and fairly difficult, but once you good get some good gear and a little father into the story line, it really starts picking up.

I do have to say to say though, make sure you put a lot of points into Lockpicking. It is a very important skill.

I think you can only repair a weapon with another of the same.

So, I have two of the same pistol. Highlight the one that you want to repair and press Y. It should take you to another menu from their. You have to scrap a copy of that same weapon if you want to repair it, though.

My god this game is awesome. I must have played like 7 hours of it today.

I've played Fallout 1 and 2 through many times since they came out and I'd easily say they're my favorite games of all time.

I also got bored of Oblivion after about 10 hours. It had more to do with the setting and the writing than anything else though. I consistently saw parallels between fallout and oblivion as I was playing the latter, it's just that Oblivion was sort of boring.

As for Fallout 3, it really feels almost entirely unlike but not completely similar to the old Fallout games. It plays much like Oblivion did, but in the Fallout universe. The combat is very similar to oblivion when you're outside the V.A.T.S system, but when you're using that you can't help but think that this is what Fallout would be if it was real time.

For example, I stumble across two super mutants in the wasteland who are poised to rip my head from my shoulders. Using vats, I was able to make one lose his minigun he was carrying by crippling his arm (no two handed weapons as a result) and the other slowed down because I got a crit on his legs. I thought for sure I was going to die when I saw those Mutants coming over the horizon, because I remember the first time I saw them in Fallout 1 they were such fucking impossible things to kill. I still was way underpowered, but like the old games, you can use targeted hits to swing the odds in your favor. Very awesome.

I think that's the real difference, along with the perks and SPECIAL that makes it just cling onto that classic Fallout feeling. As much as the setting and story ARE Fallout, all those little Oblivion engine things (Glitches, simliar sounding npcs, the control) tend to pull you out of the "This is a Fallout game" mood every once in a while.

The music also doesn't really feel right. It lacks that tribal feeling that the other games had. But they were more about being in the desert and many of the people and locations were tribal. Fallout 3 has a bit more of a modern feel to it. Closer to the old west than ancient native americans. The variety is good, but I was hoping to hear a few of the old tracks from Fallout 1 and 2.

If you're a fallout fan you should buy and play this regardless. Bethesda's effort and ability to pull something off like this with such a huge budget is worth supporting, even if they didn't get it perfect or it isn't exactly like the old games.

If I had my way there'd be a 2D, Turn Based, Isometric fallout as well, but this is a quality product on it's own. Not as good as the originals so far, but still a great, must play RPG, even in this packed holiday season.

Super Mutants are some the toughest enemies in the game... however those are just the plain vanilla versions of them. There will be tougher versions you will face.

I would say the two best weapons to get are the Chinese assault rifle and the combat shotgun. If you are gonna (spoilers about megaton) Blow up Megaton, then go ahead and go on a killing spree and take all of the loot. Lucas Sims especially has a lot of it. .

Also, another key is ALWAYS use VATS if you can. It is way more accurate and you seem to do more crits that way as well. Finally, remember that whenever you are inside buildings, look around for sinks, you can drink out of them and gain alot of health, but get some radiation. It is totally worth it though.

I have to wonder at one thing though as I feel I skipped a section of the main quest because I talked to an NPC in another part of the world that I didn't have an objective to, but the previous quest is gone (Which I never completed) and updated to new stuff.

There are a few places in Megaton that you can sell. One is the little bar at the bottom, another is the bar at the top, and then finally at Craterside.

It just sucks that they're limited on how much they give in return. Makes it a little bit of a pain.

For anyone looking to make their gameplay a bit easier, max out your speech and head to Big Town. There is a guy there (Pappy i think) who has a "Speech" option that gives xp everytime its successful. Just keep on hitting the speech and you can get up to level 20 in an hour or two.

I killed everyone in Megaton, that small settlement on top of the bridge, and Bigtown. I plan on wiping out Paradise Falls soon and pretty much every single city/town/settlement I come across. I maxed out Strength from the get go, so I just bash everyone's head in for the most part, the shotgun usually takes care of whatever melee can't. This game is quite awesome, killing people right after trading/talking/completing quests with/for them never gets old. I plan on playing it again with maxed out Speech to see how big of a different it'll be.
