part of it's gotta be the culture. back in the day, everyone played fighting games. it was the hot shit, it pretty much had most of the media coverage, people you knew who you didn't think even played video games knew street fighter.. it's just different now. and it's hard to explain it. everything else is clear cut (desire for lower costs and more availability of comp), but i don't really know what happened with the culture. less players, less media coverage, less games being made. were fighting games just a fad? did the decent-to-shitty players just give up on the grind? do new players really dislike fighting games that much because they lack a rewarding single player experience? maybe fighting games aren't pretty enough. it seems like the prettiest ones seem to be the most popular with casual fighting gamers.

i think that if fighting game scene didn't have the drop-off that it did in the late 90's, arcades would probably be more prominent than they are now, even with online console gaming available.
if anything, games are more complicated. and there are more of them.
sf2 was pretty easy and had a good learning curve. 3 kicks, 3 punches, a couple special moves. you could be crap skill level and still have things to strive for or find people to compete with. everything was fairly easy to learn just by watching, but hard to master.

on the other hand, sfa2 had custom combos, supers, escape rolls, there might've been a chain combo somewhere. people had enough trouble doing regular moves, and now you got SUPER moves? dang. when you went to the arcade, you got beat bad and you had no idea where to even start.

nowadays, we have GG with 2 different bursts, a guard break meter, IKs, dust combos, certain moves with an EX version, RC, FRC, air recovery, the green block, the yellow block, some characters have parries, dashes, air dashes... and i didn't even mention how complicated the characters are. how's a new guy supposed to watch a match and understand what's going on? and oh yeah, because the arcades don't make enough money, they can't market themselves or always have working parts.

FG coverage probably dropped because it was too complicated for them to actually come up with decent strategies. Gamepro's MvC2 combos didn't even work, with things like (C.HP, wait for opponent to come down, super).

ddr and associated rhythm games led a tiny resurgence of arcades, but only for a little while. you could charge a decent amount of money. the graphics were kinda ugly. it was extremely simple to understand and learn. that's what FGs need. and money, so that they can actually afford to make their place look nice.

just played Battle Fantasia and can say it's the most fun I've had with a 2d fighter in a long ass time. For some reason this makes me look more forward to the 2.5D games coming out down the line a bit more (street fighter 4 and blaz blue)

Yep, just gave Battle Fantasia a go as well. I'm definitely looking forward to the full release, but I still need to get used to this whole 2.5D thing.

For some reason, the characters seemed a little sluggish to me and I'm not sure if that's because they aren't just 2D animations. I really liked the RPG style of hitpoints that the game had and both playable characters were fun to use.

This might be the most talky fighting game I've ever played though. There must be some deep philosophical crap going down prior to me having to beat up a bunny with my pet dragon.

KOF XI and Blaz Blue are 3D graphics engines with 2D animated layers going over the polygons. It is not noticeable but that's how they are designed.

Man I really can't wait for Blazblue, but I was really suprised that it uses a 3d engine! One thing I want to know though, are the animated layers over the polygons 3d as well? Or is it like only drawn on the plane facing the screen or something cheap/cost-efficient like that?

Back in the day, most of the players I faced w/Blanka didn't really know how to use Blanka effectively and I could own them with Sonic Booms, Flash Kicks, and timed crouching short punches. And I wasn't that great of a player either.

Tekken 3 had some good stuff. IMHO tekken music started to really take off when TTT was started. Tekken 5 and DR are probably the best fighter soundtracks ever IMHO, and I'm still weirded out how Tekken 6's soundtrack is almost like it's either going backwards or more like Soul Calibur...?

I let them know that I'd be interested if they'd be getting them in for under $200, thinking to myself that there's no way such a stick would be available for less that $250-300. They just emailed me today with my order link and I bit. Something like $206 after shipping. I already have a regular HRAP2 (which I love), now he'll have a brother.

I really need to get better at fighting games to be worthy of the stick.

I saw them on Akihabara Shop and was tempted but for some reason, it's easier to justify $195 + $11 shipping as opposed to ~130 + ~80 shipping. Weird and pointless I know.

As far as buying the buttons separately, are you talking about converting my old, regular, HRAP2 into a "special" one? I knew that it was possible but I needed 2 good sticks anyhow for those rare occasions when someone comes over that plays fighting games.

The Ant Commandos PS2 to PS3 converter. Works great with PS2 guitars on PS3 Rock Band and Guitar Hero 3. But is not as good as the Pelican converter (best one out there for PS1/PS2 arcade sticks on PS3) for fighting games. I would try to get in Tekken later tonight.......but I destroyed my six-axis last night. It was already breaking, but I lost like 3 matches in a row because of either lag or buttons not working on it so I threw it into the ground and it exploded rather gloriously.


I did order a ds3 that shipped on the 8th though.

Yeah, the sixaxis is really shitty in terms of build quality... mine was acting up, too, but it was worth smashing that shit just to see how tremendously it exploded.

I haven't had any problems with the Sixaxis, outside of the Bluetooth desyncing. Yeah, it's a little flimsy, but so was the Dual Shock 2. I think the Sixaxis has a better pad than the DS2. The only thing I don't care for is the L2 and R2 triggers. But as a whole, I'd rather use the Sixaxis for fighters than the 360 controller.

But none of them will ever be as good as my favorite, the Saturn pad (not the American batarang version ;)). Which reminds me of how disappointed I was when I used the Dreamcast pad for the first time. Now there was a system that could do badass 2D fighters, but the controller sucked for them. Which is why I didn't hesitate to order an adapter to use PS1 and Saturn controllers on it.

I'm a little rusty in VF5, but I still kicked some ass online. It's been a while since I played it.

I use several characters, but my mains at the moment would be Heihachi, Paul, King, Raven, and Lili. I've always used Paul, King, and Heihachi since the first Tekken, and when a new one is released, I spend some time playing as the new characters.

Yea, I'd say stick to one for now. Me personally, I don't have a main, my main character is counterpicking or picking a character that my opponent is known to be weak against. I'm dirty. lol.

My best characters are probably Ganryu, Eddy, King, Julia, Jack-5. But I can use pretty much everyone except Hwoarang and Xiaoyu at a good enough level.

I love using Mishimas but can only excel with them when I have a really good arcade stick.

On the bright side, SNK Classics Vol. 1 is finally at the Gamestop near me, so I'll pick that up. Seems Metal Slug 1 and Baseball Stars 2 are unscathed, so that's good enough for me... and it also seems that this isn't hitting Japan on the PS2.

I have it. So far I've played:

King of Fighters 94 - Ran kinda weird, still very playable. Don't know if this very slightly choppy animation was just because it was old.
Shock Troopers - Runs slow, almost positive that isn't the way it's intended to be played.
Magician Lord - Runs perfect.
Baseball Stars 2 - Runs percect.
Burning Fight - Runs fine, never played original for comparison.

Definately worth 15 dollars.

Now, my big question is, is this a VS title like the old ones (MVC2 being the most recent of that style) or like the newer ones (ala CVS2). I much prefer the MVC2 style, and that screen Jekki posted give me hope for that. Why oh why did they have to cancel Capcom Vs Sammy...

My choice since 2003 has been a Japanese PS2. It's more expensive than modding but less of a headache and at the time there were tons of cool color choices. My fat, Japanese PS2 is metallic blue.

For a while, I disk swapped, but that's a pain in the ass. Now, I use the dreaded HDLoader because it's so much easier. There are a few games it doesn't work with though, so I still had to do some swapping.

Like Halo05 says, the easiest way is a Japanese PS2. I wish the PS3 was region free for PS2 games. . .

I chose the Jpn PS2 route as well. I waited for a big PA 20% sale to lighten the damage, though. Mine's is ceramic white.

Battle Fantasia is pretty cool. Has some familar SF-esque moves and super presentation. I will pick it up when it comes stateside. I forget, did MM say that Blaz Blue was getting the NA localization treatment or will I have to import that one?
