DC Soulcalibur swings onto XBLA
New features for the XBLA edition of Soulcalibur will include the expected high-definition graphics and assortment of character- and mode-specific leaderboards. Unfortunately, cross-continental swordfights appear to be limited to the upcoming online-enabled Soulcalibur IV (set for a July 29 release on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3), as Namco Bandai promised only that players could "challenge a friend in local-play Versus mode." Other modes include fighting genre staples like Arcade, Training, and Survival.

Sucks about no online though...
Maybe they'll surprise us?
It better not be any more than 800 points...
But I'll still get it.

Sold even without online. SC1 is by far the best.

It's already better than SCIV.
Better have all the extras the DC version had - art galleries and the like. The artwork was beautiful and the music was exquisite.

They probably won't
Microsoft has started lightening up the rule more and more for games like Bionic Commando and Street Fighter HD so they will probably allow it for this too

The best SC in the series. I bought a DC day one and this game just to play it 18 hours straight.
Throw in online play and I'm sold. No online, probably no buy for me. Unless it looks pimp in 720p. . .

I love how you base this on absolutely nothing except that Dreamcast games are ripped to fit on a CD, regardless of the fact that most of the good Soul Calibur rips were mononized, let alone the fact that the XBLA version would be completely redone, compression wise. (Look at SOTN)

It will probably be completely redone which will make it far less than 700MB which is "no more than 700MB".
Personally I really don't see the point of this, Soul Calibur II is already backwards compatible and I'll just continue to play that until SC4 gets cheap.

I don't really need it since my DC still works fine, but I may pick this up for convienence sake...and to try to convince them to push out more Dreamcast stuff in the future.
Kind of wish they did an updated SoulEdge/SoulBlade first for my own nostalgia reasons (and it still has the best music of the series), but I understand why that didn't happen.
Hope they include that thing that lets you edit the game's intro.
I'll at least be buying this for the nerd points. My estimate is this game will be in the 200-250mb range.

Yeah considering SC4 has fatalities, and SC2 or 3 has not come close to how good sc1 is.
PhoenixT
04-17-2008, 12:52 PM
fatalities fit with a group of characters that slice each other open with 7 foot long swords and never kill each other its about time "someone" died. While I love SC1 I"m going to withhold judgement on SC4 till I play it. As it stands right now SC1 and SC2 were about equally good save the adventure mode SC1's was far better IMO.

No, it's clearly the Dreamcast version. The arcade one looked like major ass. The Dreamcast version looked beautiful as it was. The fact that it's going to be available in HD is like an answer to those who couldn't get or use a VGA connection for the Dreamcast.

I most certainly played it on Dreamcast (to death!). And I loved it.
But 3D game remakes aren't like 2D remakes. There is little to no reason why they can't change the view frustum to make it widescreen.
I still own the Dreamcast version. So with no online play or widescreen I'll probably pass on this. Which is sad, because I was really excited about it when it was announced.

But 3D game remakes aren't like 2D remakes.
Found your problem. It's NOT a remake. It's a port with leaderboards and upped visuals due to the 360's capability of using Component, VGA and HDMI, whereas the Dreamcast's highest possibilities were S-Video and VGA. And even then, few TVs or monitors supported VGA at the time.

in the IGN review, what does this mean:
...standard arcade mode (which offers a text story for each fighter upon victory)
isn't that what it's always been? and isn't Arcade Mode what you'd call "Story Mode?" a unique dialog at the "destined battle," a picture boook ending, done.

Has anyone purchased this and seen if it does have the story mode ? If it has the story mode and all the awesome art, I will purchase this, even though it's not 16:9, the upgraded visuals and the only fighting game my wife would ever play with me because she also thought SC 1 was just kick ass. But if is really dummed down, then I will continue to use my Dreamcast, as we just played a tournament last week of SC 1. She liked the Gamecube version of SC 2 with Link, but that's about all we liked about SC 2.

The Arcade/Story mode is still there. The Mission Mode is mode you can gain points to unlock weapons, outfits, and artwork in the DC version. Since mission mode is not in the XBL version it take away a big part of the replay value.

the new blog thing caught my eye and i posted a mini-review earlier today:
http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/blog.php?b=150
but basically i said:
-There's no opening sequence. Didn't have a chance to check if OPENING EDIT is in the Museum Mode/Options. But Museum Mode does have everything else.
-Everything has more shadows. If you remember it on the DC, characters looked like the rays of Christ were shining behind them. Oh not just that...IT WAS ALL OVER THEIR FACE. But now it has shadows....seems overdone though. I watched Hwang's exhibition video and half of his body was covered in shadows. And same with Kilik. This was a quick inspection, I'll look it over more later.
-Graphics are pretty good. I mean it's better than the 480p VGA box I have for my DC. 720p or whatever this game runs makes SC look a lot better. But it's not spectacular or anything.
-You know what I miss most? The online rankings from dricas.net.jp. I had some crazy 118 win streak in Survival. For like 2 days I was 6th or 7th on that DC leaderboard...and then the Japanese players took me down to like 150th place or whatever. Those boards are long gone, but this version has rankings for Survival, Time Attack, etc. This is one of the main reasons I bought this game. I never really knew after the DC boards went down how other people were doing. Nice to compare yourself to others (again).
-What's with these achievements? OK all of them are ok but 20 points for performing Ivy's Summon Suffering?? You might as well give me points for spin the analog in a full circle and mashing the all the buttons....oh wait you just did!
-No Mission mode is disappointing. But only disappointing ON TOP of not having online play. Stupid MS and their XBLA size restrictions. Oh well.
-Load times between battles are less than 2 seconds. I don't know what happened, but mann the load times on my DC are painful. This would be my 2nd reason for buying this game.
-I'm not gonna talk about controls really. Mainly because I haven't tried the joystick yet. I assume it's on point, but we'll see.
-There's a main option screen with a fire background with 4 Soul Caliburs on it with PLAY GAME, LEADERBOARDS, ACHIEVEMENTS, OPTIONS. The music on that screen sounds better than the ones in the actual game. I guess it's just a port of all the sound effects, voiceovers and music with no update or anything.

Of all the things its missing, if it was just in 16:9 I would have bought it. I'll have to wait for Star Wars edition to come out now.

haha yeah i can't wait for the Sith and Jedi editions either.
i forgot to mention that it doesn't have 16:9, but it has FULL. it takes up more of the screen than REGULAR (4:3), but it's no 16:9. still has borders on the sides though. let's call it...5:3?

I played the demo on a widescreen and it had borders on all 4 sides, was really, really distracting since it had the soul calibur logo within the border like a cheesy wallpaper.

i don't have a dreamcast, so i bought it. it's pretty good. I understand all the complaints and i agree with them, but if you don't have a DC i think this is definitely worth a purchase.

Looks like I'm waiting for SCIV and SFII HD then. What should I use with my other 800 points then? Rez? Ikaruga?

Rez is TOTALLY worth it. The game is beautiful, trippy and brilliant.
Ikaruga? It's awesome, if you're really good. If you can't get past the damn demo like me, I'd say take a pass on it.

I went ahead and bought it, since I never played the original on Dreamcast. It seemed pretty generic (which is the same reason why I never picked it up in '99), but was fairly decent.

Even with nearly 22,000 points in reserve, I still can't bring myself to buy this one. I'm just not impressed with all that has either been removed, or the lack of online play that wasn't included.

I bought this and already have all the achievements  I found the game to be pretty fun, and since I never played/owned the original, this wasn't that bad of a purchase.
Tip for the Ultra Hard Arcade Achievement: Just set health to unlimited and time to unlimited and play as Voldo, and just get ring-outs for all 8 matches :D

exactly what move did you do? I tried it and was still losing. Yes, even with infinite health.

Wha? You might as well pick up any game you have even the slightest interest in or else you'll have a lot of points doing nothing for you.

I still own the Dreamcast disc and I just can't see buying this with no real improvements.
It was fun to play the demo and get a quick fix of nostalgia, but it's a hard sell when Dreamcast games like Rez are 5.1 and widescreen on XBLA and Soul Calibur is not.
I can kind of understand why it's not online; that would have meant a massive amount of work to completely re-write most of the collision and I/O code. Widescreen is a fairly easy addition for a 3D game. It would seem they had to open up the code anyway to add achievements and presumably render at a higher 4:3 resolution, so I really can't understand the lack of widescreen.

The frustration about this not being online stems (for me) from the fact that F-ING Fatal Fury Special is online! I mean, you're going to whip up online capability for an okay fighting game from the early 90s that you're only charging $5 for but can't do the same thing for what is probably the greatest launch title in the history of videogames?! (Yes, better than Super Mario World) Fuck you Namco.

To be fair, they were probably putting in a lot of work on SCIV. Also, a couple guys were probably sleep walking through the development for Legends last year so there might not have been enough people to get this online.

That's another reason. I also heard that the limit was raised at the last minute but it was too late to get the online and mission modes in. Hell, wasn't that earlier in this thread?

The original dreamcast version didn't have widescreen or online support...so those "omissions" didn't really bother me. Taking out the mission mode was a headscratcher, tho (unless it was done for space-saving purposes).

that's what I was doing too. Mitsu has a move like that too, you can juggle them twice for a ringout. I'll try it later.
It still feels like there's a lot to do in the game. I just miss the mission mode stage where you in voldo's stage and the rats were on fire.

Soul Calibur was an arcade game before heading to DC, unless your thinking of Soul Blade/Soul Edge, which was the arcade/psx game that came before Soul Calibur.

yep and I seriously miss Li Long and his three piece staff. Though he died in his ending (TB), I still always hope to see his name listed when ever a new Soul Caliber game is announced

I'm pretty sure he means it looks like a PSX game, which makes sense since the arcade version was running on arcade hardware similar to the PSX. The arcade Soul Calibur didn't look nearly as good as the DC version. Look here (http://www.system16.com/screens/soulcaliber_xianhwa.jpg) and here (http://www.system16.com/screens/soulcaliber_sophitia.jpg) to get an idea of what the arcade version was like.

I downloaded the demo to this and as much as I was a fan of the orignal (god did I play that alot) I thought this one was horrible. The gameplay was there yeah and its fine but they left out a wide screen presentation and it hardly looked like they updated the graphics at all. It looked like they did minimal work to port it over to XBLA which is just crap IMO. I definatly won't be buying this.

I also tried the demo. It's not too bad considering it's only $10. If this had come out on a disc, they'd try to charge $20-$30 for it. I might get it later if I have points burning a hole in my pocket.

This was my favorite dreamcast game and fighter of all time, but i am still super pissed i paid 10 for a 10 year old game that they took features out of. I mean the Story mode was the meat of the game on DC and what kept me going back time and time again to unlock everything.
