View Full Version : Sony 8GB MS 23.99 at Best Buy SEVERE YMMV

Great deal for anybody with a PSP looking for a cheap storage upgrade. The Sony brand memory stick PRO DUO 8GB has went on clearance to $23.99 from $119.99 at Best Buy. This price is a clearance price and SHOULD apply at all Best Buys. I would suggest jumping on this deal as quickly as possible before they are all gone.
Edit: This is most likely now very YMMV let me know if anybody else has any luck scoring this deal. If anything hopefully other stores will start to clearance them soon.

This appears to be YMMV but even if your location has it listed higher get it scanned because the price wasn't changed in the system till Thursday and its possible that your locations employees may not always do the morning sign price changes. Make sure its the offical Sony brand also. Good luck my Best Buy still had 7 left as of closing today.
Edit: This is YMMV after listening to other posters so I'll take the blame if your store doesn't have them at that price. I just got a little too excited about posting a deal. Anybody who gets this deal please post it so we can get an idea how wide spread this deal is. Also just because its full price it still could possibly still drop at other Best Buys soon.

Best Buy B&M clearances are always YMMV, though the prices at certain stores in the same area may be identical, as they follow the same markdown prices but the times they go down in the system is erratic. It's exactly like a Target clearance, except that in the end these items hit 90% and are not donated to Goodwill, so your chances of getting them are a little higher.

Heres a photo taken with my cell phone. The location I'm at is Abilene, TX. You'll notice it says employee sell but there was no discount applied to the unit the employee price would be listed at the far right and the normal price the line below as you can hopefully see in my sh*ty resolution photo they both are the same indicating no discount was applied. Like if I bought a HDMI cable the far right would say like $6 bucks but the line below would say reg price $60 bucks. Hope this clears up everything.

Why does that receipt say "employee sale" at the top??
cheapa$$
04-19-2008, 03:18 AM
Why does that receipt say "employee sale" at the top??
Because I'm an employee. but there is no employee discount applied to this as the clearanced price is lower then the 5% over cost Best Buy employee discount. If you need me to post a receipt that shows a actual discount being applied let me know. Like I explained in a earlier post the employee price is on the far right top line and what the unit is currently selling for is on the third line.

yeah, looking at the reg. price is key cuz it says 23.99, still very possible that it's YMMV. i have plenty of rss experience being a rep 2 so i can say that even tho it rings up at 23.99 at your store another store's computer could have a completely different price, seen it in many cases.

I actually haven't decided whether or not I'm keeping them. To be completely honest, I've been waiting for a 32gig stick for my psp and this may just be better. Sure it's split up between different sticks, but, it is a lot cheaper than a 32gig stick would cost.
Was there a clearance sticker on them or did you just scanned it and it ranged up as 23.99?
Sticker price was at $71.99, but they rang up at the register for $23.99. We actually had a store employee double check before we took them to the register.

Wow, you're an asshole. I went with a friend, as I stated. He bought two, I bought three.
I hardly think his assumption deems it necessary to insult him or default to name-calling. If it isn't your intention to re-sell them at a higher price, just say so. Since you didn't say something like, "We got 5 of them total, I'll sell them to fellow CAGs for a little extra for my trouble," etc, it's reasonable to assume you plan on selling them for profit unless you have some use for 3 8GB memory sticks.
If anything, the phrase "We cleared them out" implies an intention to ebay/etc for a much higher price than what you paid. If they had 10 instead of 5, would you have still "cleared them out"? If that's what you're doing then just say so, and that you disagree with the other guy's perspective. No need to resort to insulting.
EDIT: it appears in my typing up my post, you responded with your intention to possibly use them with your PSP. My point still stands, though, that it was a reasonable assumption and the angry response was unnecessary.

I'm not seeing it listed on the website.. hmmm. Possibility of it being on clearance for a while? Many clearance items tend to be on the website for a while at full price, while the incremental markdowns occur at the store (amount dependent upon the sales volume of the store).
Regardless of the shelf tag, I'd have this scanned for a price check if you see it. Too bad it isn't on the website, that would save some gas. DO NOT CALL THE STORE TO CHECK! These would get bought up by employees if they knew. Hope it hasn't hit FW or SD yet.

I just thinking out loud for the rest of the CAGs that live over there. You and your friend were somewhat selfish by buying all of the memory sticks, but then again this is a free country and you can do whatever you want.

In my experience the employees always get to the great deals first. Not that I hold it against them considering the headaches they must get from working there (especially during the holiday season).

For the others who haven't had any luck they could still very well drop for your store at a later date and time. so keep an eye out. A new lineup of sony memory sticks is susposed to be hitting at the end of the month to replace the current ones. they are susposed to support higher transfer speeds.

not exactly the smartest move ever...
it worked for me. The first store I called said they had them and that they were on sale for $23.99 and had 10 in stock and no they wouldn't hold one for me. I got there 5 minutes later, paid my $23.99 + tax and was on my way shortly. They still had the other 9 when I left though with the look on the persons face who had to get them out of the back of the store, I don't think it would have lasted much longer (there were none on the sales floor and I had to get some help to get one).

They have a sony brand at my store, is that the one on sale???
Phoenix, AZ is $119.99 all over town (for anyone here).
It is interesting to think they'd clearance something that's still kinda top of the line and in fairly high demand.
They are being dropped from a number of BBYs. If a store by you still has them for reg price that is not a store that will drop them.

Don't know if this will help- but the 8 gb sticks were not in the single shot camera or video game section at my best buy. They were actually in the video camera section- which is a little ways off from single shot. But if you ask a sales rep, he should be able to find them in the computer if they have them...

Coon Rapids MN, and Blaine MN had the 8GB, but at 119.99 (however I did not have them scan to make sure) Brooklyn Center MN had the 8GB at 74.87 (I did have them scan that one), however the same store had the 4GB at 12.99. They had them in the camera section (the peg was empty) also on an end cap mis-marked at 38.99. So I bought two 4GB and was on my way. So much for my psp storage problem!

I looked in the system today for our district. Only 3 stores had the memory cards period and only 1 store had it clearanced for the $23.99. The item shows discontinued in the system. My store has 5 of them but they are still currently $119.99. Due to the new style of clearance pricing that Best Buy has started by market, its a SEVERE YMMV indeed.

You just have to have an associate look up the sku in RSS and then have them click Check Other Locations. It will show the Available on Hand for other stores in their district and the price that they each store is selling the item at. Different stores can have different prices due to being in different markets and also the store that you may be at DOES NOT have to price match the other stores clearance prices. That's why it is a huge YMMV.

Thanks a lot for the info. I always wondered what the procedure was to get them to check other stores around the area. In this case, it would definitely save me from driving around wasting gas to search for something that may or may not be at this price or in stock.

Ok I can at least confirm that this is marked as "discontinued" in the Best Buy store system. One store here did indeed have 10+ in stock but it rang up in the system as $119. The camera section guy who helped me told me that when clearances occur, it's up to the store manager to decide where to price the merch but I don't know about that.
Hrrm, interesting method but definitely not always right, since it shows the store I was at (and saw the RSS screen showing 0 in stock) has some...nothing is always right when it comes to stock. 8-)
Also, just because there aren't any on the floor it doesn't mean there aren't any. There weren't any on the floor at the store I got one at but that was because they didn't want to have them on the floor without security cases. I know, don't trust the monkey, but he brought all 10 out of the back when he went to find them. He also brought out the 9 security cases so that he could stock the rest.

i work at a best buy in Nh, and i checked that RSS and there were a couple stores in my district, so if you live in this area they are West Lebanon, NH and Berwick, ME I believe. Just make sure you are getting the right 8gb memory stick pro duo, these are being discontinued because sony is rereleasing it, so if you see two different types its the one with the lower sku number.

And yeah..the price of gas is worth it (if your store has them in stock) as you are saving like $80. I doubt it costs you $80 to drive somewhere, even for 2-4 hours.

WRONG! On something like this you NEVER want to call the store. You run the risk of tipping off the employees of the deal. Then they'll go in, pull them all, and hoard them for themselves.
On something that is this big of a YMMV deal I definitely would not recommend making a special trip to try and find it unless BB is really close to your home. The one thing you're right about is people don't have room to complain if they do go out looking for this deal and come up empty. Out of all of the CAGs that have posted here only a couple have found this deal. If you go out searching in your city and you've read this thread you know that the odds are against you.

Just because it's supposedly a seller in the US and the picture seems legitimate, that doesn't mean you won't get shipped a fake memory stick. Plus, it's a little suspect that the seller's feedback is private, especially considering they have 2 negatives and a neutral in the last month.
