Yeah, I know what your thinkin "oh... another EA thread great" and I'm sure this will get locked soon too...

Anyway, here's a great one.

I just got my PS3 back from my best friend and during the time he borrowed it he got NHL08 (we both like hockey). I had seen it at his house and it looked fine. There are two differences between his tv and my monitor. 1. he has HDMI there while I'm on Component. 2. his is a 40in. LCD, mine is a 28in LCD Monitor.

So I go to plug it in and play NHL08 and it looks like PS2 quality literally... It looked good on his, but not as good as the 360 version.

Turns out the PS3 version ONLY goes up to 720p... but, it's on a Blu Ray. yay....

The 360 version does full 1080p.

Explanation... ?

Anyway, THIS is just ANOTHER reason I HATE EA. I don't care what else you guys say.

The fact that the PS3 doesn't upscale automatically to 1080i (like the Xbox 360 and every other electronics device out there) is the ONLY reason I haven't bought one yet*. I refuse to have to worry whether a developer will support 1080i for every game I want to buy.

*I haven't checked in a while though so maybe this has changed...

720p to 1080p is clearly comparable to ps2 and ps3 quality.

Hardly any PS3 games are 1080p, sadly. Not EA's fault. For once.

They aren't...? Soo... how is this next gen gaming, why get an hdtv, why have hdmi, or why use blu ray then... ?? O.o

What other games don't because Ninja gaiden does. The demos I've played are probably 1080p.

They aren't...? Soo... how is this next gen gaming,
More polygons, wireless controllers, 720p (basically) standard, incredible physics, AI, 5.1 sound, etc.

why get an hdtv,
To play in 720p?

why have hdmi,
HDMI isn't really required for "next-gen" gaming or even 1080p gaming (see Xbox 360), but it certainly can be more convenient.

or why use blu ray then... ?? O.o
Blu-ray has little to nothing to do with 1080i/p. Sure, it allows for the higher-res textures, but there's lots of other uses for Blu-ray. And when it comes right down to it, Blu-ray never had much to do with games to begin with. It was all about winning the format war in the PS3's case.

I'm sure the 360 version only does 720p too, but it has a scaler chip that allows the 360 to output it in 1080i/p.

From what I understand the PS3 doesn't have a similar chip, but some games do software upscaling.

Exactly. Unless you have a gigantic TV or sit right on top of your TV your eyes can't tell the difference between 720p and 1080p. See the AVS forums for more details, but even on a 50" set tests have found you have to be closer than 8-10 feet away to tell the difference, and I wouldn't want to sit any closer than that to my 50" set (I set about 9.5 feet back).

1080i is for douche bags! ;)

I can tell when a game is 1080p or 720p on my 50". Something that size does benefit from the extra resolution. Uncharted would have made good use of 1080p on my TV. It is dumb to have a console being totted as the start of the next gen of video games, but it isn't the top resolution. It is one thing that has bothered me about the PS3, but nothing major. Hell, I still play my Wii and its awesome 480p resolution!
