A lot of smaller shops give out a bunch of the books, or charge a minimal cost (25-50 cents). They usually have a pretty good selection to choose from.

Free Comic Book day is only day I show up to get comic books. Every other day Comic Books are too damned expensive.

From what a local small store has told me, comic stores still have to pay for the free comics for free comic book day. So if you get a free comic book, at least buy something else, even something cheap, just to help out your store a little.

Yup, everything we give away as "free" the stores still pay for. Publishers still get paid. The stores still pay for the comics.
The promotion is to try to promote reading & reading comics, to entice new readers. The best part is, 90% of the people walk into the store, yell "Where's the free stuff?" grab tons of everything "Oh, I'm taking 6 copies of each for friends & relatives", then ask "did I get all the free stuff? Is the candy free? No? Why not?" and then leave. They don't even LOOK around the store.
Just take as much free crap as they can carry, leave, and never come back (until Free Comic Book Day next year).
I don't mind when little kids come running in all excited and grab a bunch of comics and not buy anything, they're little kids & as long as they actually read the comics I am happy with that. I just hate how most people act.

Aww, the website's down. Thanks for reminding me. There's a comic/anime shop at the end of the street, and I've only been there once. Hopefully it won't be too crowded in there today. Not that it matters, I can't afford a comic book habit (on top of a video game and internet addiction) anyway. XP

I got there around 1, and there were plenty of comics left (they did limit people to 4 + a regular comic out of a box). Though I suspect that since the store was empty in the middle of the day in one of the most crowded parts of town, everyone did what Haggar said, and grabbed what they could and ran right after they opened.
I did stay and chat with the people working there and who came in and tried to find a good comedy comic. I wound up getting manga instead. ...Where are all the funny American comics anyway? Everything on the walls was the usual serious/epic stuff I don't care about.
I also apparently missed Brian Clevinger. >_<

Went in around one as well. They had a 3 per person limit. Was there with my wife so got 6. They also were having a sale 30% off TPB so got an Ultimate Spider-man TPB vol 7, a Deadpool TPB and the Bone TPB.
Free comic wise I got Neotopia, Tiny Titans, Superman, X-Men, Hellboy, Shonen Jump. Oh yeah and also with any purchase a free copy of Cable #1 so got that too. I saw some Hero Clix, but totally forgot they were part of the free comic book day...so didn't really look at them :(
Definitely was going in mind to enjoy some free comics, but also to make a purchase to support the store. Second time there (First time was to go find it in preparation for Free Comic Book Day) since I just recently moved here. I like it. :) Friendly atmosphere so see, at least in my case the FCBD worked just as intended.

exactly what happened today. My bud and I went to the one in the mall and there was a line of people who I have never seen there before, pacing. As soon as they get in there, they start knocking other people around and start double fisting the comics. I felt bad for the guys working since they kept repeatedly telling them "Limit five comics, please. Limit five, please." One old guy looked up eventually and said "Oh well, too late now!"
I hate most people :bomb: ...
