View Full Version : True next gen games
edit 2: (without scaling down, removing graphics, animations, audio, network play, features, etc.)
Post the games on 360 you believe are next gen in this particular sense: they do something not possible on previous hardware (that does not include changes pertaining to graphics). I know people will argue that a true next gen game does not need to fulfill this requirement, so when I say true I mean on the criteria I specified above, not on what everyone will consider a true next gen game as that differs across the board. edit: (without scaling down, removing graphics, animations, audio, network play, features, etc.)

That's an impossible request. Because you could take any game and scale down or remove graphics, animations, audio, network play features etc. Until it would work on any system.
How do you think multi-platform titles are made?

Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty 4, Rock Band. I refuse to say Halo 3 cause its just a painted over Halo 2. I still love it though

I'd say Halo 3 just because of Forge and Theater. Those are two things you couldn't do on previous the same way Halo 3s doing it.

Like another person said, any game on the next gen, can be done on a ps2, if you strip some graphics away. Just look how big Elder Scrolls 3 was on the xbox...
The people who made Devil May Cry 4 said that hook could not be done on the ps2....WHAT? just market bullshit...

Oblivion
Dead Rising
Bioshock
I don't think any of these would've worked on any last-gen consoles.

I don't know, I think you could possibly do Bioshock, it just wouldnt be as appealing due to the quality of the graphics and the sound.

I'll edit the OP to indicate (without scaling down, removing graphics, animations, audio, network play, features, etc.) The game as it exists on 360. I thought that was evident but I guess not. Like for instance, how would you scale down Dead Rising, take away all the enemies? Wouldn't be the same game.

Wasn't Bioshock a spiritual sequel to System Shock or whatever it was called? Can't say I've played that though.
And I really can't think of anything.

Assassin's Creed is a great choice, even though it was repetitive and had alot of problems was a title I could never imagine on the old consoles.
That would be my top pick

Oblivion and Bioshock both could of been done on the previous gen consoles (with scaled down graphics as seen with Morrowind and the tons of FPSs on the Xbox). Dead Rising also could of, but not unless they scaled back the number of zombies.

skate. comes to mind... you need alot of processing power to pull off what that game can do.
GTAIV ... wait till release and you'll see.

How about Crackdown? There is so much shit that goes on at once on the screen that even the Xbox 360 slows down. I think it would be very hard to do on the old systems.

The system's damn near 3 years old now.
Stop calling the current crop of systems "next-gen"

I think the core gameplay of Dead Rising could be maintained, but you'd have to limit the number of different zombie models (they'd all look the same). The dynamically generated background zombies would have be replaced with an animated texture or something.

I think you could have butchered Oblivion to work on the Xbox, but it wouldn't be the same experience. After playing Oblivion, I wish they would remake Morrowind on the 360. With the updated map and quest book, it would be a much better game (this coming from someone that looked at Morrowind as one of the best games last generation). If anything, I think Morrowind may have been ahead of its time as a console game (much like GTA was on the PS, and then it exploded on the scene as Oblivion.
I have trouble with Assassins Creed. I think it's a great mix of Tomb Raider and GTA in an awesome ancient setting. That being said, if you scale it down graphically, I'm not sure something similar couldn't have been made before. Also, sure, it's repetitive, but I haven't gotten bored of it yet (and I'm on the 7th assassination, so a good deal into the game here). I guess I can see it it you play the game to get through it as fast as possible, but there is something special about getting to a new area, and then getting on top of the buildings to see where the viewpoints are, and just going from one to the next.

I think all of these next gen games, could have been cut down for the ps3/xbox, but I don;t think those systems could handle the multiplayer of the next gen games. I remember trying to play Killzone and even Halo 2 online, but I ran into lag so often. With cod4 I haven't had much lag at all and I'm sure the same can be said about Halo 3. Unless my connection just sucked back then, but I have the isp so it shouldn't have...

What are they going to call the true "next gen"? Next-next gen?
Rather, when does this gen start being called "current gen"?

Definitely Mass Effect. I also feel Gears of War is next gen for some of the gameplay mechanics and sheer WOW factor of the graphics.

no offense to Nintendo...but I believe graphics are a big part of what makes a game "next-gen". Games in HD couldn't be done (for the most part) in the previous generation. There was never a moment playing xbox games on my HDTV that I was "amazed" like I have been many times with the 360 and PS3. (The last time I could appreciate such a next-gen leap was when I first saw NFL2K).
The level of "realism" in a lot of current gen games could not be achieved prior to this gen.
When one of the following is announced:
PlayStation 4
Xbox 720
Wii 2
Thanks, that is why I call this next gen. It's a highly agreed upon term, used more often than saying current gen. I guess I'm just tired of people choosing to post in a discussion only to troll or insult the OP. Edited the OP again to note (without scaling down, removing graphics, animations, audio, network play, features, etc.) Otherwise it would not be the same game.

Games like skate. and Def Jam Icon really show off in the graphics department. Lets face it: there are no true next gen games, but these definitely capture the look of what I would call a next gen title. Oblivion? Not so much.
Edit: Forgot to mention Gears of War, which really had a next gen feel. No shooter can top this because Gears was such a step forward.

Definately Bioshock. Even my 360 has problems with it, but then again, it's a refurbed POS.
