QFT. Unless they announce a new Mario, Metroid or Zelda the chances of me buying a new Wii game in 2008 are slim to none.

Possible Rygar for me. That's about it.
They better start kicking up the qualitu on the shopping chanel for sure.

I know Brawl is a big deal for Wii, but it can't hold the whole rest of the year up by itself.

QFT. Unless they announce a new Mario, Metroid or Zelda the chances of me buying a new Wii game in 2008 are slim to none.

And yet if they announce any of those, the amount of backlash "omfg sequels" would be never-ending.

Retro has said they are taking a break from Metroid, so that's probably out.

There's only been one Mario platformer every 4-5 years at the rate we are going, so that's probably out.

A new Zelda is possible, but Miyamoto (or Iwata? Or Auonuma?) made comments last week about how "the Zelda team is coming back together," which makes me think that a new game would be at least a year away, if not more likely 2-3 given the amount of time usually reserved for those games.

(There are those weird rumors that Retro is remaking the first Zelda as an FPA. I don't really put a lot of stock into them at the moment - seems like an odd thing to do.)

It's more likely that Pikmin, Animal Crossing, and/or Starfox are going to appear or be announced. There's also the chance that revivals might happen (Punch out and Kid Icarus come to mind), but even that is kind of a pipe dream at the moment. I don't even know if they'd attempt a new franchise right now.

E3 is some 2-3 months away, and I imagine they'll drop information then. Here's hoping some of that is relevant to this year, because even I'll agree that the lineup is pretty paltry right now.

Unless Disaster is really awesome and is showing up sometime soon, then I imagine most people won't be happy with the release schedule.

Hmm.
Mario Kart, Wii Fit, possibly We Ski, Wacky Races is a def try because LOL @ the show, DEF getting Harvest Moon, very interested in Samba, and somewhat interested in Star Wars Unleashed.

Where's Animal Crossing? Or Star Fox? Or Kirby? :(
Hell, I could go for a Mario Party 9 right about now.

Agreed with the fact that it is depressing. I have both Mario Kart and Wii Fit preordered. Other than that there really is not alot there. We Ski has potential becuase of the use of the balance board and Boom Blox looks interesting but at $50 its price will not get me to buy it. Alot of the major games on there Alone in the Dark, Force Unleashed, etc. will be bought or played on a next-gen system (Xbox 360 or PS3). The wiicontrols are always just tacked on to those things as a last minute thing and feels and plays terrible 99% of the time.

This is true. I'm guessing quite possibly that's when Mario Sluggers will be out? (Though I thought that was gonna be a Summer game)

Nintendo doesn't have anything officially dated beyond Wii Fit, do they? Disaster and Mario Baseball are probably out in July.

Is African Safari like Endless Ocean? I wanted Africa for PS3, but then I remembered I don't want a PS3. :p

Kitty Luv? Space Chimps (well at least it's not Super Robot Monkey Team HyperForce Go)? Kung Fu Panda (instant FAIL for Jack Black) Why haven't we started burning down developers' offices for crap like this?

Looking forward to Wii Mario Kart, Wii Fit and Tales of Symphonia 2. Expect 2-3 sleeper hits but yeah, not much on deck. Truth be told 2007 was a pretty strong year and my backlog remains collecting dust, so I'll be held over. I'm not 100% sold on the comfort of the controllers yet either as I haven't played anything more than the casual/party games and reflex shooting games like Ghost Squad/RE:UC

Getting Mario Kart, Wii Fit, LEGO Indiana Jones, LEGO Batman, and Force Unleashed (Wife is demanding I get Chocobo’s Dungeon and Harvest Moon)

Might be getting GH: Aerosmith (still waiting for a track list) and maybe African Safari for the wife.

No complaints here with the Big N. I'll still be playing Brawl, Kart, and GH so all of these are just making it better.

Well, there's your early 2009 lineup for Amazon's Deal of the Day.

(For the little that's it worth, I have two of those games preordered and will be most likely buying another one sooner than later. Those are all pre-Memorial Day releases, by the way.)

These days I buy Nintendo consoles for the mascot sequels so no problems for me there - although I do think they need to rethink some of them since the last Zelda, Metroid and Mario were "more of the same" (even though they were each AMAZING). I forgot to add Pikmin to my list - I'd buy that in a second. I'd also buy a new Punch-Out!! and Kid Icarus if they ever decided to update either franchise...

I'm really looking forward to Star Wars Force Unleashed, so hopefully the reviews will be good.

I'm not depressed about the lineup this year at all, unless all the games turn out duds.

SSB Brawl (already proven to be good)
Mario Kart (more of the same according to reviews so still good)
Wii Fit (looks fun)
Top Spin Tennis or Top Spin 3 (IGN says both are coming out this year - strange but tennis on wii is fun)
Guitar Hero Aerosmith
NCAA Football 09 (been waiting for this series to get to the Wii. Hope EA doesn't screw it up)
Star Wars Force Unleashed
Spiderman Web of Shadows (might be a dud but more promising than onces made off movies)

I don't get very many games usually. I think I only have 10 games for xbox. I'm at least interested in seeing how the above 8 games turn out this year. Some likely duds but I think I can definitely get my fill this year of good games.

Samba De Amigo and Rygar are about the only things I'm looking forward to, and even those are only possibilities. That's ok though. Gives me time to go back and play some of the DS, PS2, and GCN games I've picked up and just haven't found time for.

Boom Blox is an EA title, so it's almost a guarantee it'll hit $20 eventually. I'm going to wait for it, and use the money on Mario Kart instead.

No love for Lego Indiana Jones or Lego Batman? If they're anywhere near the quality of the two Lego Star Wars games, they'll be fantastic. :D

I'm still not sure about lego batman. The lego games are kinda goofy type games, which is fine usually, but batman is supposed to be dark and everything, i just don't know how well the lego style will work.

Mario Kart and Samba de Amigo for me. (You guys better buy Samba!)

Those Lego games will be 360 for me. It's easier to co-op over there (and Achievements).

Wii Fit will be bought eventually.

I'm ready for Animal Crossing. Wish they'd hurry it up!

I take it you've never seen the Adam West version of Batman, then. Campy as all hell, but it's still a blast to watch. I'll take "Holy shark repellent, Batman!" over Batman and Robin any day. :)

That's exactly how I feel. Plus, with the exception of GTAIV, there's not much coming out for 360 that's peaking my interest :( So at least those 2 will give me a reason to turn on my 360 again.

After getting my Perfect Shot today, I really, really want to see more zapper/light gun games. House of the Dead 4? Please? Why not make a Wii EXCLUSIVE11!1 and make House of the Dead 5, Sega? Yes, you can package HotD 1 + 4 together..then rip us off and sell HotD 1-4 on 1 disc after that..but you better give us a new and original HotD game..OR another light gun game :bomb:

Even some WiiWare titles that involved using the zapper would be appreciated.

We'll always have the VC.

If we see Earthbound come out one Monday, I don't give a fuck if every Wii disc reproduction line fuckin' drops dead on the spot, that will make the console worth it for eternity.

Besides Mario Kart, Boom Blox, and de Blob there really isn't anything on that list I want (besides a few games that I would get on the 360, not the Wii). Hopefully Nintendo and a few other third party companies announce some big games for the Wii at E3.

It's ok though, I still haven't started Metroid Prime 3, and I want to pick up Okami. I'll have plenty to play on my Wii this summer.

While the Wii Release list does suck, I don't feel that bad about it.

Well first off we got Wiiware and the VC which will at some point get some more good stuff, hopefully, lol.

Also the Wii is looking to go into the rut it did last summer. Face it no good games came out last summer really and it looks to be the same for this one. You can't really help it, it just happens. It happens to every console at some point.

I am sure once Q3-Q4 hits, the ball will get rolling again.

Another good thing is I need attempt to save up $1200 this summer (that is if I can land a job with a good amount of hours for a new pc and a PS3), so the lack Wii games saves me there, lol.

August for Samba De Amigo? Jesus, how long does it take to port a Dreamcast game to the Wii? A month ?

Oh my goodness - this is all the Wii games that are coming out for nine months? That's too bad. I'm sad it's not like the previous 15 months where these lists had 10 games on them and then 100 games end up coming out because Wii games are profitable and everyone wants to make one. Well, I guess I will just have to whine then.

Also, am I the only person extremely excited for Boom Blox? Peggle impregnating Wii Sports bowling and no one else cares?

Wii Fit, Samba De Amigo, and de Blob are the only games that interest me (already bought MK Wii).

And Wii Fit is too expensive at $90 (I was hoping $70) so I'll have to wait for some sort of deal on that.

Decent list, but this is why I have other systems (DS and 360 and a somewhat beefy PC)
I'm sure there will be more announced by E3 so we'll have a good holiday lineup. This is what Nintendo gets for releasing Brawl, Kart and Wii Fit all behind eachother.

I'm really hankerin for some new Mario Party. Yeah yeah, I know lots of people can't stand Mario Party because we would now be on NINE..but still :)

Hopefully MP 9 has SOME kind of Wifi. The very least I would hope we would be able to play mini games online. Ideally, a whole game..but I would settle for the option to saying playing those "best out of x" games online.

As someone who formerly hated Mario Party, I have to say MP 8 wasn't bad at all.

What Nintendo needs to do is speed up the pacing of the turns to really get things going. They could also stand to increase the amount of minigames and their polish.

Yeah. I couldn't handle the pacing of Mario Party 8, and no way was anyone I would normally play with patient enough for it. We were hoping the series had become pretty much like WarioWare with a gameboard (which is how I remember the first 64 version), but it definitely hadn't.

I just saw some pictures from We Ski for the first time and I'm pretty excited for that now.

Only Blast Works and Boom Blox really stand out to me in the immediate future. Less so Boom Blox because of the $50 price tag, no online, and no head tracking. Sigh.

Shikigami 3 looks good too, but considering the previous entry was priced at $10 MSRP, I certainly don't want to pay more than $20 for this one.

It looks like the PS2 lineup...

That's not an impressive list, to be sure, but there's some good-looking stuff in there (Deadly Creatures, etc). I don't feel this is a Nintendo-specific problem either, which is troubling -- the only game I *know* I'm going to buy in 2008 is Fallout 3. I've never had an annual line up this empty, and I do have multiple consoles.

Also, I think this makes the no-win situation for Nintendo very apparent. Third parties complain that they can't compete with Nintendo's first party offerings, so when there are no major first party offerings on the horizon, they start droppenzebomben with all their good stuff, right? No, it's clear they never planned to bring anything of substance to the console in the first place. I'm more and more convinced that third parties misjudged the market, but rather than try to adapt to a market situation they didn't expect, they're going to try to adjust the market to their off-base predictions ("Sure, we could start making games for the console most people have ... but we'd rather make sure the pony we picked succeeds.") Basically, they're going to ride their lower profits right into 2011, when they can go back to business as usual.

Lan_Zer0
05-05-2008, 03:36 PM
I think the problem involves both third parties and Nintendo. Clearly third parties aren't trying that hard on the Wii (if at all). But on the other hand, after coming from two generations of "lol, no third parties on our system," Nintendo should really have stepped up their efforts to attract third parties, and not just small Wiiware developers.

A lot of key cross-platform franchises not on the Wii could have benefited greatly from Wii controls (most notably anything that involves aiming to shoot a gun), and subsequently, sales. But what we have now is a collection of slapped together games, and the name Wii being synonymous with PS2 and PSP. Nintendo should have taken the initiative to get these companies on board and some serious games in development. Of course, that may all change within this year after they reveal their projects at E3, but I won't hold my breath. If the highlights of this fall's release is composed of solely Nintendo contributions (Animal Crossing, Kid Icarus), I will be a sad panda.

As a side note, I seem to be enjoying my Wii a lot more if I don't focus on the cutting edge of new releases. I have found plenty of games that I liked a lot after picking it up at a budget price. I haven't directly purchased any game over $33 (that includes the big N titles), and I think that makes any of the flaws the games have easier to swallow and even fun to laugh at (i.e. Alien Syndrome, SoulCalibur Legends; $12 each). With that said, try something new (and cheap!) and you may find some decent fun on the Wii.

What, you mean besides bringing them a ginormous new market on a silver platter? Do the third parties need someone to wipe their noses for them as well?

Nintendo did their part; the third parties now either have to find a way to reach this new market (ideally through well-polished efforts) or grow irrelevant by their own fault.
