View Full Version : Linkin, you need to stop closing threads so blatently

Strell

And if it's not Linkin doing that, then nameless mod, you need to stop doing it.

At least, you need to stop doing it in the manner you are doing it now. A simple "hey could you please use this thread (http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=178226) for your questions" instead of just closing it and tacking on "use the FAQ thread" in the title, which is misleading since Linkin shut all of those into one thread up at the top.

There's not exactly a wealth of activity going on around here, and we're handling ourselves fairly well. So you need to either facilitate that by pointing toward the thread and helping out people directly, OR you need to leave it alone and let anyone who wants to handle the question work with it. Closing it down without so much of a redirecting link is a little cold.

And yeah - it doesn't happen often. But it's annoying enough considering some people are adequately helping out, and the OP in question might be confused as to why their thread got closed, especially if they have further questions or issues with it.

You can take this up with me directly if you have a problem with my suggestion.

I already told you we can't do that until we get our scented candle line in stores.

I don't understand it. What don't you people like about them? They cover a wide range of amiable, inviting scents, like "Teabag" and "Teabag Harder."

So disappointing.

Don't forget sexy.

But sorta-on topic. I understand the point of merging alot of the stickies into one sticky, but the FAQ should be by itself. I never saw a problem with the 6 stickies we had..but whatever, I guess.

I thought about complaining earlier, but I noticed it was gaming forum wide (Sony + Microsoft as well).

At least before, sticked threads were much more obvious than being another thread deep.

I really don't care who might be added as an additional guide, as long as it's not me.

I know, I know...but you know how territorial Strell and lilboo can be. Eventually they'll be fighting over who left the toilet seat up, and you'll be able to stage a coup. No worries.

To be fair, we'll decide the matter in a couple rounds of SSBB. Those TWO wont be fighting over anything regarding pants or toilet seats. Believe me ;)

I've had my disagreements with the moderation as well, but I dont have a particular name to blame.

There's been so much clutter in the Wii forums more than anywhere else. My one sticky FAQ thread per system was an intention to get as many possible users suscribed to the main thread to answer those one off questions that users (mostly new) like to create just to get a quick question. I don't understand what you mean by "blatantly", I either close the link and ask them to use the FAQ or redirect the link to the FAQ...where they are able to check the links to see where they could post the question, or if there's no link, just post the question.

You can't tell me that the Wii forums haven't been a lot more easier to read since this started, because I've seen a huge difference.

Maybe so, but when there are posts like this...

Because the only thing that seems to move in here is the Super Smash thread.

...I've got to think there's some validity to Strell's complaint. Look at the front page of each of the console forums - the Wii forum has much less activity than the PS3 forum, and I'm pretty sure the site's PS3 install base amongst CAG users isn't big enough to account for that discrepancy.

LinkinPrime

So you're saying that by me re-directing clutter threads to the appropriate threads or the FAQ thread is slowing down traffic in this forum?

That makes absolutely no sense. I've been doing the same for the PS3 and X360 forums...The X360 gets a lot of traffic...the most I'd say, followed by the PS3/Wii.
Slow traffic is not caused because the cluttered threads are being closed or re-directed, its simply because there's not enough people discussing in these threads.

So you're saying that by me re-directing clutter threads to the appropriate threads or the FAQ thread is slowing down traffic in this forum?

Yes. There's not a direct correlation there, but there definitely is one.

Take a look at the Wii friend code thread (http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=115788), and the "Recommend me games" thread (http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=162819). The former hasn't been posted in for a month and a half; the latter hasn't been posted in in a month. I'm assuming that this inactivity isn't due to lack of demand; it'd be ridiculous to say that nobody on CAG has bought a Wii or wanted a game for one since the beginning of April.

I think the threads are inactive because nobody knows where to look to find them. "Wii FAQ's" isn't a desciptive title at all, even with the list you've appended to it. I also don't think that a few more stickies would be "clutter," or even a bad thing - if we took them out of the first post of the "Wii FAQ's" thread and re-stickied them, there would absolutely be more traffic in them because people would just stumble on them instead of having to look for a thread they didn't know existed in the first place.

And no, the forum search feature isn't the answer here. From the number of repeat threads and deals, it seems like most of the site's user base isn't aware of it or doesn't bother.

In any case, at least one part of the system's going to need to change, and soon: having one thread dedicated to the Virtual Console is okay, but trying to lump the Virtual Console releases and all of the WiiWare titles together is bound to get very messy very quickly, and it's going to be difficult to find information on any of the WiiWare titles unless their release rate is a lot slower than I'm expecting. A thread on the Strongbad title would have gotten a decent number of posts; Strell put it in the Virtual Console thread because he figured it'd be moved and it got a handful of responses.

So...yes. Yes, I do think that thread consolidation is cutting down on traffic in this forum. I don't have any proof and I doubt that the way this forum is moderated will change, but given the reactions I've seen in relocated threads and in this topic, I don't think I'm alone with this opinion.

Well I don't think any of us asked for them ALL to be unlinked.
See if I was Lacey a guide/mod, I would have linked the 16:9 thread and the "WTF is wrong with my Wii" thread IN the FAQ.

You know, there's a great potential compromise we could try. :-k

One of the other forums I visit uses "Combo stickies," which is a sticky that links to all of the other stickies. Unlike the FAQ, though, it's much more clear what's going on there. If we made one of those and called it something like...

COMBO STICKY: Links to threads to find friend codes, recommendations, and MORE!

...it'd get rid of the clutter the mods dislike and it'd be a bit more obvious what's happening there. I still think that leaving them out on their own is fine (what's a few more threads above the sticky divider?), but this might be the best compromise.

At first glance, I read this as: ...Can't see anyone better to ruin this area...

I was confused when it first started happening, but frankly, I think Linkin's doing a fine job. It's comforting not to see multiple <trendy new release> redundant threads and the ubiquitous, "recomendz me sum gamez / Just got me a wii..." threads appearing every few hours.

Hey, wait, the old sticky list is back! Power to the people and all that, I guess...

Hopefully when CAG 2.0 comes out the tag system will lower the number of threads per game.
I think some of the thread inactivity is due to lack of interest. I think the Wii Friend code for example is due to the lack of support for the wii code by nintendo. Since games like Brawl don't use it, no one bothers to register. As far as the reccomend thread, most people seem to be going to individual game thread for info. When I was interested in the Willams pinball game, I went to that thread. To be honest I didn't even know there was one. I knew DS has one because many posters are passionate about it.

I'm a huge fan of the separate thread per game, but I know some people hate it. I don't consider it "clutter" or a waste of space when it's digital. If I want to know all about Boom Blox for instance, I would think to go to the Boom Blox thread (hint, hint). Boring or crappy games' threads will naturally fall off the first few pages and games that people vare about can have nice, active discussions unfettered by thoughts about other games.

I was actually thinking about starting a Boom Blox thread, but then it dawned on me that I'm not going to buy the game right away. Since it's an EA title, I'm thinking we'll see it at $20 before the end of the year, so I'll wait and hope that I'm right. :)

Well, for one, this is in the Wii forum, and is about threads getting closed inappropriately in the Wii forum. Two, you made it seem like it was someone else's thread getting locked, not yours.
