For those who haven't been following it, this is certainly a growing trend in the country, especially with the financial troubles many state governments are experiencing in this weak economy.

In return, have them give us NJ's gas prices.

Damn! Buying consoles online was a deal in its self because of no tax.

No, we don't. Like other states, we are charged sales tax when the company has a physical presence in our state. Also, like other states, we have a use tax, but most people don't pay up, which is why states are looking to do what New York has done.

Are you sure about that? I can't remember the last time I wasn't charged sales tax on an internet purchase. I've even had things shipped to my in-laws to avoid the tax when buying online.

100% sure. I order stuff from Buy and Amazon on a consistent basis. You're only charged sales tax when they have an actual presence in the state, like a store or warehouse.

you are actually supposed to pay taxes on online purchases right now, but its based on an honor system of reporting it to the IRS, which is ridiculous.

State governments have been trying to push this kind of thing for years.

Hmmm... interesting. I wonder who I've been ordering from that has something in-state... seems like everyone!

Well, like I said, use tax. Also, you pay it to your state government, not the federal government. Lastly, it's not really an honor system. States have gone after people for it in the past, but only really, really, really large offenders. It wouldn't be worth their efforts going after you or me, because the money they would get wouldn't make up for the time and money they spent investigating the situation.

yeah of course, but theoretically the system was still in place. I dont have a problem with them charging tax online, i think it makes for a fairer playing field between B&M retailers and Amazon and such...maybe now i can actually start going to stores again rather than buying all my crap off amazon:-k

Oddly enough, I saw a local news piece about this, and that was what this watch store owner was saying...leveling the playing field. Personally, I much prefer buying online, not just because of the lack of sales tax, but because the prices are often much better. Could you imagine only buying, say, Blu-rays in-store? Even if something like this holds up and comes to Jersey, I will still buy a lot of my stuff online. Hell, I already buy all of my computer parts from Newegg, and I have to pay tax on that. The prices are simply better than what you would find in a store.

I live in NY state and just to let Amazon know, if they start charging tax to me I will probably stop shopping with them. Hopefully I will still be able to find online retailers that don't charge tax. Our tax is 8.75% despite living in one of the poorest areas of the whole united states. Buffalo NY is rated second poorest city in the entire USA. Our gas prices are well above the national average even with the insane inflation going on. I am glad I bought a digital camcorder, a digital camera and a PSP last year on Amazon so that should hold me for a while. Tax here really kills the purchase of anything large, its pretty much the difference of getting a new game with your system or not getting a game with your new system.

According to the article amazon is the one thats aganist taxing online retailers. You need to write or call up senate/house/mayor/other officals and tell them you wont be voting for them because of this. If enough people complained they would think twice.

Well, I'm sure all online only retailers are against this because that's one of their biggest advantages: people don't pay tax.
In all honesty though, I see this happening sooner or later. It seems like B&M store sales are declining and online sales are going up.. state/federal government (or whoever's supposed to get it) gotta re-coup their these tax losses somehow.

The NY state government has tried this in the past, but it never got through. It's the whole nexus law thing. It's that technacality they're using to do this which I find kinda absurd (makes sense in a twisted way though).
The other problem is having these online retailer setup a sales tax addition depending on where you live in NY as sales tax is different across the state. That's gonna be fun for the software developers.
I can understand if the sales tax that is charged is the NYS sales tax...that's only like 4% or so.
