Features

Prince of Persia is set in a land rooted in ancient Persian mythology, with the Prince finding himself caught in an epic battle between the primal forces of light and darkness—the God of Light, Ormazd versus his brother Ahriman, the destructive God of Darkness. The Prince arrives just in time to witness the destruction of the legendary Tree of Life, an act which threatens to plunge the entire world into eternal darkness.
Manifested in the form of the Corruption, a dark substance that physically contaminates the land and the skies, the Prince must partner with Elika, a deadly companion, to heal the world from the evil Corruption.

A new hero: Master the acrobatics, strategy and fighting tactics of the most agile warrior of all time. Grip fall down the face of a building, perform perfectly timed acrobatic combinations, swing over canyons, buildings, and anything that is reachable. This new rogue warrior must utilize all of his new skills along with a whole new combat system to battle Ahriman's corrupted lieutenants to heal the land from the dark Corruption and restore the light.
An epic journey: Escape to experience the new fantasy world of ancient Persia. Masterful storytelling and sprawling environments deliver action-adventure fans an experience that rivals even the best Hollywood movies.
Open-world structure: A first for the Prince of Persia franchise—now you have the freedom to determine how the game evolves in this non-linear adventure. Unfold the storyline by choosing your path in the open-ended world.
Deadly new ally: History's greatest ally is revealed in the form of Elika, a dynamic A.I. companion who joins the Prince in his fight to save the world. Gifted with magical powers, she interacts with you in combat, acrobatics, and puzzle-solving enabling the Prince to reach new heights of deadly high-flying artistry through special duo acrobatic moves or devastating fighting combo attacks.
Next-gen engine: The franchise’s debut on next-generation consoles utilizes Ubisoft’s proprietary Anvil engine, the same engine used to develop Assassins Creed™ (http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/a/assassinscreed/).

I don't usually like cel shaded graphics much, but these look great. I like it when it's stylyzed like this or Okami. Don't care for it much in something like Wind Waker/Phantom Hourglass when it just looks like a Saturday morning cartoon.

Hopefully it focus's more on puzzles and platforming like the Sands of Time and less on combat like the sequels (especially WW).

Is this the same team that does Assassin's Creed? I thought they'd launch directly into a sequel, did the first game do well?

Mr Durand Pierre
04-30-2008, 09:57 PM
I'm not sure if it's the same people who did Assassin's Creed. I'm hoping it isn't as I didn't care much for Assassin's Creed at all. I loved PoP1 & 3 though (even 2 wasn't bad. Just not as good and rather stupid, but still well designed gameplay-wise). The only thing that makes me at all worried is that Ubisoft really hasn't done much noteworthy since Sands of Time other than Two Thrones. I loved Beyond Good & Evil though, so they've made a good Zelda/Okami like game before and will likely do so again. Based on all I've seen, this is now rivaling RE5 and Brutal Legend as my most anticipated game of the year.

Spaz you gotta get on that Sands of Time bro.. that game is like sex for your joystick hands. I don't think i've ever fallen in love with a game as fast as I fell in love with PoP. I was sold. COMPLETLY sold when I played a PS2 Demo disc that included the original PoP for free. every aspect of the game is just pure fun. Of all the games in my mediocre-modest collection that one I'm most looking forward to replaying when I finish my backlog is PoP:Sot.

If those were all coming out in the same year, you'd have a point. Most of them are fighters, rpgs, or music related, a lot of them originating from Japan.

The ratio is overwhelmingly in non-cel-shaded favor.

Japan or not, you gotta admit that there are more games coming out that are cel-shaded than before. Previously, cartoon games were usually the only cel-shaded games out there. But now shooters, action/adventure games are now following this type of style. Not to say that it looks bad, but it's definitely a style that's catching on.

I feel quite the opposite actually. A friend of mine hates cel-shading and thinks it's just a passing phase, and I think he's unfortunately right about the latter. It was popular during the PS2 era, but fewer and fewer games seem to be using it nowadays as next-gen consoles are so powerful and they all seem to be racing each other to come up with games that look the most "real." Aside from RPGs like Eternal Sonata I can't think of any other action or adventure game on a next-gen console to employ cel-shading other than Crackdown. Which is a shame as it looks so beautiful and ages so gracefully.

Edit: Okay, so there's the upcoming Battlefield game being cel-shaded, but really, what else?

I don't like to look at it as a passing fad. My hope is that it's a niche design. Most games don't use cell-shading and i'm ok with that. I don't want most games cell-shaded. I want a few games to use it and use it well.

This is a completely new story, not connected to the previous trilogy. It's a good way to distinguish it and it fits in great with the story.

TF2 is a big one. Some may say Battlefield switched to the cel-shaded design trying to somewhat imitate TF2. The Simpsons game, but I admit it's hard to have a Simpsons game not cel-shaded on a next-gen console. The new Naruto game is cel-shaded too I believe. Since you say it like that, I do realize I may have looked at it too drastically. But maybe it's because I've been a long time fan of Battlefield, seeing it turn cel-shaded really pisses me off. And now seeing a new Prince of Persia game turning cel-shaded kind of makes me sad. Of course this release could end up being amazing but it's really different from the original franchise.

Game looks fucking phenomenal. This should rock people as much as Sands of Time did. The gameplay mechanics look original enough for me and that new sidekick chick is badass. Odd visual style for her (she looks like a gypsy) but what I don't get is how you can slide all over with those claws and she follows you. So if she can follow you with bare hands after you slid down a straight drop with your claw...shouldn't we be playing as her and the Prince is HER bitch? ;)

I work with a guy who keeps trying to convince me Warrior Within was the ONLY good Prince of Persia. I should clarify that I actually did like Warrior Within though. At first it was a slap in the face but I grew to love it. Still think Sands of Time was the best. Not just Prince of Persia, but among the best games ever.

Wolfkin
05-29-2008, 12:35 PM
warrior within had a good game inside of it.. it was just buried under needless and constant combat. I'm still working on it to be honest. I remember combat beign so much fun in SoT that I wanted a bit more and blah.. be careful what you wish for. I haven't really read up on any of this since I wasn't too into the last ones but the inclusion of that female character makes it seem like there's potential for co-op play.I hope not, platformers don't work well with co-op unless you take turns Mario style.
==
So now that I've seen the interviews on GameTrailers.com I'm half apprehensive about the direction they're taking this game.

New Prince
I don't mind this being a whole new prince. I agree the game is called "Prince of Persia" not "The Prince of Persia". Similar to the Legend of Zelda.
Girl Magic
The game this time seems to focus not on the prince himself so much but on the girl. Getting the girl to the target so she can use her magic. PoP is all about the levels so what happens at the end of the level doesn't bother me so much. Now if we're playing the girl that'd be different. The way she is described it doesn't look like she'll be a co-op choice, but this is just my impression. Which is colored by my preference for a solo prince game.
Chains acrobatics
Acrobatics you can chain sounds like Tony Hawk w/o the wheels. In my head it see it like the last level of Sands of Time where you had spots where you just jumped and ran non stop for almost half the section before you got a pause. So if it's like that I'm all for it.

No Sands of Time
This is a big no no for me. This is core Prince. I'm not sure I want to play a Prince of Persia where you can't turn back time. I could make a Mario game without a Super Mushroom that doesn't make it a good idea.
Platforms
PS3, PC, Xbox, DS - nothing surprising but I don't like it when the Wii gets skipped. Especially on a franchise I've grown to love dearly.
Enemy Fighting
Enemies that fight with my abilities? That sounds dangerously close to making the game focus too much on fighting and not enough on platforming. I think for PoP I'd rather have GoW over Soul Calibur (not that I have any idea what that even means?). In some games you want enemies that think like you that act like you. In other games you DO want enemies that are 80% fodder.

There hasn't been much information shown. Most of the interview video was the same trailer and concept art. My opinion on a lot of these could change if they're implemented differently from how I'm guessing.

Fucking ridiculously beautiful new trailer released:
http://www.gametrailers.com/player/36270.html

I swear, if I didn't know better, they could tell me that they were developing the game in collaboration with the ICO team from Sony, and I wouldn't be surprised at all (which is of course impossible, so this is just a rhetorical statement).

This just shot up to a day 1 purchase for me. If this game is as good as the trailer makes it look, I will be totally prepared to completely forgive them for Warrior Within.

Not specific info, but here's the confirmation to follow up your post!

Credit to IGN.com

"November 20, 2008 - The Prince of Persia is leaping onto PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 the first week of December with a brand new look. This is an all new Prince, different both in appearance and attitude from the Prince of Sands of Time fame. But what if the new Prince's look just doesn't do it for you? Fear not. Today, Ubisoft announced the inclusion of alternate skins for the Prince. You can play the entire adventure as Altair, star of Assassin's Creed or as the classic Prince of Persia from Sands of Time.

To gain access to the Altair skin, you'll need to register (for free) at Ubisoft.com. Once you have a copy of Prince of Persia, link your Ubi account to your Xbox 360 Gamertag or PSN screen name to access the Altair skin. You can switch skins from the main menu. This is Altair, but rendered in POP's slick art style.

Those who pre-order Prince of Persia from GameStop will get a code to access the Prince of Persia Classic skin. Pre-orders will also get a free upgrade to the Limited Edition game, which includes special packaging, a making-of video and the original soundtrack.

Ubisoft is mum as to what additional skins will be made available, but has confirmed that there will be additional skins for the Prince and Elika. Some might want to see a Sam Fisher skin, but we find it hard to imagine Ubisoft passing up the chance to let players experience Prince of Persia as a fighter jet from HAWX. "

http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/932/932434p1.html

Link includes pics of Altair in game. Sounded like April Fools but it's confirmed on Ubisofts page. I just registered an account there but I don't see how to link them yet. It's not really anything special (seeing as how mixed the reactions were) but I liked Assassins Creed and the Prince from last gen. So this just gives me a little geek boy thrill.

Fancy that. Ubisoft GIVES AWAY extra skins instead of charging. Makes me glad I actually pre-ordered it for full price instead of waiting for a price drop. It's this kind of little extra for the fans that I think we could use more of in the industry.

Well, exclusive bonuses are nothing new. Gamestop just seems to get the most of them recently. But I've recalled special bonuses at places like Target before. It's especially prevalent with the new DVD releases and exclusive this or that. Which sucks, but it's part of the sales game and nothing new. Gamestop has to be paying out for these exclusives one would think.

What annoys me is how close to release this all gets announced. If I had my game pre-ordered elsewhere I'd be ticked.

9.3 from IGN.

Even though the score isn't an average, it's weird how a high score of 9.0 and low of 8.5 can come out to a 9.3. Increasing the weight on any of those categories still never gets you to a 9.3 XD

Not sure if I'll get this game though...kind of lost interest. Since the story is only 10 hours...I don't know how much I feel like fetching 1001 items. Assassins creed was awful, and the image of the prince on the one ledge there looks far too much like that pathetic game.

Well as somebody who enjoyed Assassin's Creed, I'm interested in this game after reading Hilary's review on IGN. He got flack for giving Assassin's Creed a 7.7 (if I remember right), so if he liked this game then it obviously does not share much in common with PoP.

As for PoP, I haven't heard anything about this game. Maybe I'm just not looking at the right sites.

This game is amazing, definitely deserves the reviews it's getting. This one really outshines the original trilogy and does everything better. The platforming is flawless and the controls are easy to get used to. Combat is improved as well. Elika is the best NPC ever. There are far less enemies to deal with now, and each battle feels a little more epic.

My one small complaint is that you can't die, Elika will always save you.

Where did you get a copy?

I just played this game for around an hour and I loved it. if you are used to the Sands of Time Trilogy, this one will take a little while to get used to. However, once you are accustomed to it, you will love it. The Prince's voice seems out of place though, kinda like Altair in Assassin's Creed. (ubi needs to stop doing that.)

After playing for a couple hours last night it does seem like an odd choice for the prince's voice. I guess if Ubisoft decided they wanted a Nathan Drake Prince they went to the right guy. Not sure it makes sense with the time period/motif they were shooting for. I don't think you can blame the actor though, if they brought him in and told him to do a the voice a certain way and they didn't correct him or find another actor after they realized he couldn't do the voice they want, then that is on Ubisoft.

Overall I like the game so far, but I'm not 100% sold on the combat. I'll have to put a few more hours in to see if it grows on me. There is no doubt the game looks great though.

He is right, Prince of Persia is not heavy on collecting anything. You do need to collect "light seeds" which are these glowing orbs, but there almost 500 extra orbs that you don't even need to collect to finish the game. It is not a burden whatsoever.

Beautiful, wonderful game. If not for a stellar year already, this would easily be my #1. Right now though, it falls in right behind MGS4 and Fallout 3. I have played just about every major release now though, so there really isn't anything that is going to oust it from there.

Just finished this game.

I'm not sure what Ubisoft Montreal's obsession with making games that have very few enemy types, very few mission-types, and extremely repetitive goals in their games. Nearly every complaint critics had of Assasins Creed carried over to this game, yet it scored generally higher somehow (Although I liked Assasins Creed more).

Come up with a goal for a level. Then create a handful more levels that have the exact same goal, with the exact same mechanics to achieve the goal = game finished.

PoP was almost as scripted as simon says:

Wall run? Hit A button at this time.
Jumping on poles or bars? Hit A at this time.
Screen turning white? Hit Y.
Brass rings? Press B.
Enemy glowing blue? Press B.
Enemy growing tenticles? Press Y.

Now combine the above in a random string with some pretty art and you have yourself a PoP level!

I enjoyed it, but glad I rented it.

How long is this game? I played for maybe 90 minutes at most and it seems like I've done so much already. It goes by pretty quick I'm guessing.

Its pretty much typical action game of this generations length. If you sit there and do it it all, it wont take more than 10 hours I'd imagine. The sad part IMO, is there is not a lot of replay value which takes away from it a bit. I'm not an achievement whore, so busting my ass for all the light seeds doesnt interest me, nor the speed runs.

I just finished it tonight. Really loved the art direction and while Prince/Drake's voice didn't fit at first, I warmed up to him and it stopped bothering me, and some of his silly quips to Elika had me laughing out loud. The dude is a pretty good voice actor and he seemed to have chemistry with the girl voicing Elika.

Negatives:
The combat was a bit wonky in places and samey (good ole Ubisoft, reminded me of Assassins in this regard). This is probably my biggest gripe of the game outside of some areas where the camera angles and the way the arty-style of the graphics interfered with line of sight (i.e. during corrupted air sequences, espc in the Martyrs Tower). However, those gripes don't make this a skipper at all. This is a must-play IMO.

The ending was a bit annoying. I dont mind cliffhangers, but this one was a bit predictable. I'm definitely excited to see where they go with it though. It seemed to have multiple endings too, reminded me of Return of the King! lol

I'd say 8/10 easy. It could've been a GOTY contender with a bit more variety in the enemies and combat, but it misses the mark in those few areas. I kept waiting for a hard fight and it never came, just got annoying with some of the bosses parrying and not in the challenging/good way. The platforming was a real treat though and the art direction is as good as it gets.

As far as the ending goes -

I was disappointed. I just sat through what felt like hours of clever dialog as the characters got to know each other and flirt. Then suddenly the main character makes a decision that Elika certainly would not approve of, and went against everything they had built in their relationship and purpose of the game so far, and all she had to say, and all that was offered for the player invested in them was "Why?" Pretty empty.

I can now relate to all the negative comments on this game. I have reached a point to where I now must backtrack and start collecting orbs I didn't get so I can continue. Fucking lame dash o. I was having such a good time too. It was flowing so nicely. I'm so close to beating it and now this crap.

Just finished this, definitely not as good as people have been saying. No puzzles (except the Sluice gate), and bland combat. Nothing like fighting the same monster 10 times in one game.

No death penalty, and pretty lackluster plot which was expected. That said, the graphics, platforming, voice acting and characters were awesome.

Good rental, but due to lack of replay value I can't see ever going back. Hopefully the sequel mixes stuff up a bit.

7.5/10

Just finished this game.

I'm not sure what Ubisoft Montreal's obsession with making games that have very few enemy types, very few mission-types, and extremely repetitive goals in their games. Nearly every complaint critics had of Assasins Creed carried over to this game, yet it scored generally higher somehow (Although I liked Assasins Creed more).

Come up with a goal for a level. Then create a handful more levels that have the exact same goal, with the exact same mechanics to achieve the goal = game finished.

The thing I really liked about both games is that while you can basically mash the same buttons to get through most of the game, you are rewarded when you learn the intricacies and you can choose multiple ways to go about doing things. In that sense it feels much more like an experience than a game. The story and beautiful enviroments in both games excel, which adds even more to the sense of experiencing a world.

It is a warm and fuzzy feeling that you either get or you don't and it makes a world of difference in what you think of the game. When you add too many "game" elements to the game you take the risk of pulling the player out of the experience and making them very aware that they are playing a game. There a lot of games where that negative "gamey" feeling (GTA IV, any CoD on veteran difficulty and Splinter Cell: DA jump to mind) completely ruined the experience for me and left the game to stand exclusively on its gameplay.

In that end I never felt like I was grinding out anything in either PoP or AC. I wanted to continue on to experience more of the game and felt rewarded the entire time.

thrustbucket

You make a compelling argument.

Basically you seem to be saying that PoP and AC are less about the game and more about the experience. In many ways, more comparable to a movie than a game. Only the movie pauses and makes you find the play button all the time - and that is the game.

I see them almost like Dragons Lair and Space Ace. Go through repetitive Simon Says-like motions to keep pressing the play button on the story and see more pretty art. Almost entirely scripted. Those games definitely have their place, but as you point out, these games almost border on being outside the definition of "game".

I guess for me personally, if I'm going to play a "search for the play button" type game, I'd really prefer an Adventure game like Monkey Island or Full throttle to point and click through. At least those have fun stories with compelling puzzles to keep the story moving instead of just lots and lots and lots of button combinations.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

jkanownik
12-22-2008, 06:42 PM
I wouldn't go to that extreme, but they definitely fall somewhere in between. Comparing them to Dragons Lair or Space Ace does them a disservice. Both games have large worlds that you can explore at your leisure. You could literally spend hours in both games just looking around the world.

The minute you start thinking about it as lots and lots of button combinations the magic is lost. In my head while I running along a wall I'm thinking about the action associated with the next step. Do I jump or grab a ring? If you're thinking do I push A or B it has been reduced to the gameplay and it doesn't hold up.

But even then I don't think the gameplay is as simple as it has been made out to be. Just like AC the combat has a rhythm and a structure to it, almost like a dance. So far in PoP I've only been able to achieve a 6 hit combo, but combos of 14(+?) hits are possible.

Game is pretty good. It's definitely worth 40.00. It does get repetitive though, and combat and replayability is about as bad as AC, but also is as good as AC was.

AC was a beautiful masterpiece, but the lack of good combat and low replayability made it spoil pretty fast, and that's exactly how it is with this game. It's still a must play, and I agree, if it had more replayability or combat was more varied, it could have been a definite GOTY contender.

Just picked up the game for 40.00 and the game is awesome! I think it is worth that price and should have been released at that price. I have a feeling that is why when you did buy it basically at 59.99 you upgraded to the Limited Edition version. Also I think they wanted it to release at 40.00 for some reason hence the drop already.

Yo... Just got me a 360. Very happy with it. As far as the game is concerned - does anyone else feel that Elika is way more bad ass than the protagonist can ever be? I mean check out what she can do:

fly
whoop an ass or two
summon a path-fairy
special abilities

Prince, on the other hand has only two unique characteristics:

run on a wall for a little bit
block

The game should have been "Elika pwnin' monsters from Ico" without the Prince altogether. No, I'm not serious. Their conversations feature some terrible writing, but enough of it is good for be to keep pressing that Left Trigger.

I'm very happy I rented the game. I got it Monday night, already defeated the Warrior, Concubine, and the Alchemist and have just one path remaining, have all four abilities unlocked. Do not see me playing this game for the second time, so $8.99 Blockbuster rental is a rather decent price to pay. Before you start yelling "Dude, you do not have just one path remaining" - I'm guessing (hoping) there's more to the game than that, so don't spoil.

It suffers from Assassin's Creed syndrome... jaw-droppingly gorgeous game built around a very small, repetitive set of game mechanics. These are games I should've loved, but just ended getting bored of.

Just like AC, I see myself not going back and finishing this off for another 6 months, at least. I know it's been said as a joke, but it's as if Ubisoft thinks that people will be distracted enough by visuals to not notice that complete lack of depth and variety in a title.

ttocs: the following is an opinion that dissents from your own, which is not meant to be a troll or an insult.

I wouldn't want to own this game for $5. I've beaten my rental copy, almost out of necessity, and really have to say that my enthusiastic response was due to discovering the only good boss first (I won't bother explaining which one that is, for that bit should be unanimous).

Having not played Assassin's Creed yet, I have to say that my issue with the game's redundancy / having nothing new to show for itself after whatever path you play first is staggering.

In other words - if you haven't played this yet, you might want to check it out before investing. Better safe than $35 wasted.

I agree. I am almost finished with PoP and I have been enjoying it but it is really really repetitive, really really easy and really really beautiful.

The world they created is pretty much empty and when you do encounter an enemy it is the most generic, pathetically designed enemy you could possibly put in a video game. The unhealed regions are a joke too - blobs off goo that move up and down in a pattern? Seriously? I also love how the paths are all laid out for you too but showing the wall as worn down - like when the kingdom was in its heyday that's how people got around.

I don't know why I'm compelled to finish though - I am having fun with it. Unexplainable fun. Maybe it's because it's easy and mindless and most of the achievements are completely attainable. I don't know. I played through 1/3 of Assassin's Creed before putting it down and I have yet to go back - maybe I should since these games are very very similar.
