"They should be more careful what they're advertising because transit caters to kids as well," said Transit Windsor bus rider Betty Riley. "And they wonder why our jails are full and where these kids get these ideas from."

Yeah like looking at an advertisement is really going to convince a kid to go out and kill people

Also, notice that in the picture the kid is wearing a Batman t-shirt which we all know is not violent, right?

I say that kid should grow some balls and be scared of real shit.

http://xbox.ign.com/articles/539/539986p1.html

A Prince of Persia (GC) ad appearing on Canadian busses has been pulled because one small child was frightened by it and refuses to ride and y bus with the ad.

I think this kid should be kept under close observation instead of inconveniencing everybody else involved. Can you imagine if everything that caused random 4-year-old children to freak was banned?

They were so sheltered that one day they were out in their clubhouse all huddled around a poster. I thought it was porn or something, so I took a look. It was an 8-bit NINTENDO AD! They were looking at various games and making up how they thought the game would play if they ever managed to get their hands on one. Their mom caught em and beat the crap out of em.

Let me guess: none of you "how could anybody be scared of this" has a 4 year old kid, right?

I think everyone is perfectly aware that small children can manifest any imaginable irrational fear but there is no excuse for making your kid's short-lived problem into a hassle for anyone else. A month later and the ads would have been replaced by something else and the kid would hardly remember.

I wasn't much older when my family saw 'Willy wonka & The chocolate Factory' at the Thousand Oaks Drive-in and the Veruca Salt giant blueberry thing had me in tears. Did my parents demand the movie be removed from circulation? No, they just hushed me up and pretty soon I'd forgotten what I was so upset about. I didn't wake up that night screaming about blueberries or any such nonsense. My parents acted like I was the one being upset over nothing (which was entirely correct on their part) and it was soon forgotten. When I brought it up again a few years ago it took my mother a while to recall the occasion. Since I was the youngest of five it was just part of the job of being a parent by that point and not a memorable event for her.

OK. You know how people are different? If it's a grown up scared by an ad, we can laugh, but young kids need some sheltering from violence.

I know we've all seen so much violence, both real and fictional, that it's hard to imagine anybody being affected by anything as trivial as the image of our prince. I suspect it's not the sword at all - didn't Aladdin have a sword? - but the face.

I'm playing through prince of persia right now and love it - but it's definitely not suitable for every preschooler. And on some level, I'd rather have a child whp would find the image at least a little disturbing.

Lets now ban all violent media on radio/TV/print. You should only be able to to buy Violent media on DVD from a ADULT store because a kid could view somthing bad on a TV over the air waves or on a cable network. Time for a MAJOR call back on Barbies wearing skirts that show more the 10% of the female body. What is with Mom's and Dad's today? seems to me like kids are are born for 2 reasons these days .

1: a tax right off
2: broken condom/sponge

For real people take 10 mins to explain the REAL world to your kids and stop putting the blame on others.

I'm reminded of a comic strip, probably Ffeiffer, in which a mother and a child are leaving a theater showing Disney's Bambi. The mother asks the child a series of guarded questions trying to determine if he was traumatized by the death of Bambi's mother. As the kid fails to show any concern at all the mother becomes nearly hysterical since she might prove equally disposable.

That Canadian kid officially gets my vote for "Wussy of the Year."

I'm willing to bet money that kid is going to grow up to be an effeminate whiner who gets beat up multiple times in school and is probably allergic to everything too. See what happens when people piss in the gene pool?

Maybe that kid will see some remotely creepy video game ads for like Resident Evil or Silent Hill and scare himself to death, thereby making this world a better place.

I work with children and I can see why a kid would be afraid. The mother though did not handle it in the correct way. It is amusing to me how I see parents all the time blaming society and the media for "scaring" or "damaging" children. The mother took some time to create some creative story, such as "the man with the sword is protecting the bus for all children" or some BS like that. And did anyone notice how long this went on? She said this has been happening since October. This to me is a sign of poor parenting.

Doylerulez
08-19-2004, 09:51 AM
Now maybe they'll allow cigarettes to advertise on buses again. They're less scary than those "Truth" ads, those are f'd up. That and buses that have pictures of lawyers, I feel violent when I see those assholes. "I'll show you personal injury!!"

Man...thats funny..i thought the hot coffee lawsuit (the Mcdonalds thing) was dumb but this jus beats em all.

To those of you who can't get over the McDonald's coffee case:

1) The coffee was so far above boiling temperature--so hot that it gave her third degree burns.

2) The case was settled out of court. She was not awarded lots of money by the court. Instead, she got her hospital bills paid and some extra ($250,000, I think) for pain and suffering.

Yes, she shouldn't have spilled the coffee. That was stupid. But that coffee was way too hot to sell to unsuspecting customers. [/rant]

Next, the PoP ad, while possibly disturbing to some 4-year-olds, is exactly the kind of ad that is all over the place. I'm certain I saw a ton of those kinds of ads for movies when I was that small. She can't remove them all; she doesn't seem to understand the "real world" concept.

And I'm glad we know that for 4-year-olds:

Prince of Persia = Terrible & nightmare-inducing
The Joker = A-OK!

This child is going to grow up to be a big fat mamma's boy pussy!

He is now at this early age learning that a little griping from mommy will produce the results that he wants. As he gets older, obviously being raised by a single mother, it's going to get MUCH worse. This kid is going to grow up to be a hair-dresser or interior designer. Sad.

Heaven forbid that you actually ADAPT to your surroundings and public environment. Mommy should have made it a game of some kind with him. "Don't look at the poster," or something- instead of her righteous crusade against the "scary guy with the sword."

Get the game now while you can. They'll be changing the box-art next!

I also want to see the prince with a gun. WTF was she talking about?

RBM

Unfortunately, people like her tend to have their way in matters like this. Many here may post scathing messages about this story, but nobody would be willing to take the time & effort to actively protest the removal of the ad. She made the effort of repeatedly complaining about the ad until the bus company removed it, because she cared enough (how much time did it take to compose & send those letters, after all?) More than can be said for those of us who are opposed to her point of view.

"Tristan has had nightmares about them, saying he sees the man with the gun," she said.

And after Tristan told his mother about his nightmares, he proceeded to watch Pikachu electrocute two humans until their charred flesh smokes, while Squirttle drowns a sparrow.

"I am shocked something like that is even on the bus."

If you're shocked to see what's on the outside, wait until you meet "Trenchcoat Frank" on the inside.

"They should be more careful what they're advertising because transit caters to kids as well,"said Transit Windsor bus rider Betty Riley.

Yes, because we really can't have suggestively violent ads to scare the kids, drunks, burnouts, and mentally disturbed individuals who use public transportation. How dare they!

"And they wonder why our jails are full and where these kids get these ideas from."

You're absolutley right, Betty. If there were no 5x15 ft ads of a 20-something man from the 14th century holding a blade on the side of a bus,

violent ads aren't good in a lot of people's opinons, esp. parents of little 2-4 year olds.(yes i still think this woman is a biatch, and is full of crap) but of course when people decide to protest them they pick the first thing that's always picked on..

VIDEO GAMES!!!!

i found an awesome example of stupid people today, i'll post it once i find it again.

Here's awesome example..

"If a woman burns her thighs on the hot coffee
she was holding in her lap while driving, she
blames the restaurant.

If your teen-age son kills himself, you blame
the rock 'n' roll music or musician he liked.

If you smoke three packs a day for 40 years
and die of lung cancer, your family blames
the tobacco company.

If your daughter gets pregnant by the football
captain you blame the school for poor sex
education.

If your neighbor crashes into a tree while
driving home drunk, you blame the bartender.

If your cousin gets AIDS because the needle he
used to shoot up with heroin was dirty, you
blame the government for not providing clean
ones.

If your grandchildren are brats without
manners, you blame television.

If your friend is shot by a deranged madman,
you blame the gun manufacturer.

If a crazed person breaks into the cockpit
and tries to kill the pilots at 35,000 feet,
and the passengers kill him instead, the mother
of the deceased blames the airline." -- an excerpt from some random email

taken from http://webhome.idirect.com/~stray/legal_disclaimer.htm

not 100% related but just a great example of people looking to get attention and blame someone else like when they were 6 years old.

I agree totally a few months back some parents sued the company that made Grand Theft Auto because it made their nine year-old learn words like 'hore'. In my opinion it's their own damn fault for letting a nine year old play a rated M game.
