EA Video Game 'Madden' Tops 1.3 Million First Week
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "Madden NFL 2005," the latest version of Electronic Arts Inc.'s pro football video game franchise, sold more than 1.3 million copies in its first week of release, the company said on Thursday, citing internal figures.

Have there been any sales figures on ESPN at all?

*sigh*
I'll never understand paying $50 for a sports game that will have a (almost gauranteed better) sequel every year. Thank god Sega caught on to this problem. I hope they can make a difference. I'm actually going to buy ESPN NHL, and it will mark the first sports game I've ever bought. Why? Because it costs what it should cost.

Apparently, NFL 2k5 sold 792,000 units in July.

Yeah, Sega knew that most of the people who were going to buy 2K5 were going to buy Madden as well. If they can continue to make quality games at this price every year though, I imagine those numbers will be quite different later on.

Did you choose not to investigate other sources? I probably saw 10 different reviews of the two games and Madden had better scores in about 3-4 of them. Even if Madden is better I offer this:
I'll take a game that is 95% as good and 40% of the cost over a game that is 5% better and 150% more than the cost of the other any day.

Damn Madden is still the king of sales
What else is new? Nothing much can top it in sales/come close outside of GTA, Gran Turismo and Halo according to the shrine of data.

I found it funny and sad that my friend and his brother each bought their own copy of Madden. They did buy a copy of NFL 2k5 and thought it was great, but they're dumb asses that had to have Madden.
I actually punished them by sending them a link to DLF's blog. They hate me right now

I can't believe it. I swear people are addicted to Madden for no reason. My friend played 2K5 and admitted that he did not think that Madden would be better but that he just had to have it. Maybe they have subliminal messaging while you play that says, "Buy me next year when we add one more feature!!" I swear Madden will add Create a Cheerleader next year...

I wonder how many of the Madden sales were the collector's edition? Or how much the GCN editions helped?
Assuming Sega has the legs to maintain this $20 price point, it could serve to slowly chip away at the Madden base. Do we know how many copies Madden 2004 sold in its first week?

I have both, and I gotta say I like Madden more and so far everybody I talked that said I was dumb for buying madden (which I about $25 anyhow) only happens to own ESPN only so I can't listen to thier opinion and trust it. ESPN has advantages yeah sure. The presentatoin, online play (without the xbox glitch), and graphics are all better than Madden. Yet Madden has all the things that seem to matter to me most as a gamer and football fan. Better gameplay, better AI, and one hell of a better franchise mode which is the biggest reason I buy these games in the 1st place. Finally lemme say $55 or so for both to me was a great bargain and I'm disappointed in either purchase.

There have already been a bunch of rumors floating that the price drop (which you can thank Take-Two more than Sega IMO) will only be in effect this year and will probably go up at least a pricing stage or two next year. Granted those are just rumors and don't mean much at this moment in the scheme of things.

I got both and prefer Madden myself. I can see why some would like ESPN better, but to me Madden just plays better. The new defensive AI is excellent.
I buy Madden every year because I am a football fan and enjoy having the most current game and rosters. Madden has produced an exceptional game for years and as such has earned brand loyalty. It's the same reason that when you drive into a town you don't know you go to McDonalds instead of Bob's Burger Shack. The Shack may be better, but it could also be a hell of a lot worse. So you end up going with what you know.

I have nothing against people buying Madden. Its their money and they can do what ever the hell they want.
For some reason, I didn't think alot of people were privy to ESPN's price drop. The casual gamer does not subscribe to gamespot, Cheapass gamer, etc so they may not be aware of it.

That 1.3 million is for ALL MADDEN 2K5 GAMES COMBINED.
Madden was released on 5 systems.

I was hoping ESPN would wreak some havoc sales-wise against Madden, but I didn't think it could been done in such short a time.
The most vocal gamers I see at game stores enjoy ESPN better and were trying to spread the word. Yet they can't compete against a collector's edition and the brand recognition Madden has.
I think if the price point is kept the same next year and VC releases another quality game, the margin will be significantly closer.

I have to agree with a lot of people. I mean seriously how much better does a football game get when you have the option to set the price of a hot dog. Now that is revoloutionary gameplay.
Whoops, sorry about that I think a little sarcasm dripped on the floor...

Yeah I think for ESPNs sales numbers to continue to rise they have to keep the 20 dollar price for at least another year.
The reason people buy Madden is because MADDEN IS BETTER.
I've played both ESPN 2k5 and Madden 05 and Madden is definitely a more realistic football game. ESPN is like a toned down version of Blitz.
Most of you are bigger fans of the price than the actual game. Just because a game is cheaper doesn't make it better, no matter what the retarded reviewers say.
Anyone who knows football knows Madden is better, end of story.

I got both ESPN and Madden this year and I like ESPN more. Although each game has it's flaws, I still think ESPN is the better of the two because of the presentation. My bro loves Madden though and refuses to play ESPN. I wonder if Sega made ESPN for GC, would it had a bigger effect on Madden's sales? :?:

I buy maden every year. This is the first year I have not. ESPN blows madden away. MAdden says the exact same things he said last year and the year before. The presentation alone beats maden. Add in the fun of the crib create the music and the first person football and it make it even better. What can you do in madden? Coollect cards again. Wow that was cool like 4 years ago. The whole card collecting thing really isn't that fun. Sure its neat to coleect the cards but come on is that going to be really that fun after you played the game through? Nope. YOu can unlock and build a cool house on espn. Now thats cool. Playing the dart game is fun enough by its self. ESPN really won this year. @0 bucks cheaper too! Got to go with espn!

NFL2K5 is way better than Madden, and during July, I think it only had about 2 weeks to get those numbers because it was released mid-month.

madden is more realistic, therefore better for the football fan, players and coaches. espn is more for the casual football fan and someone who jsut wants to throw the ball deep everytime and not have to worry about knowing about defenses, and how to read them. im a hardcore football freak so ill stick with madden.

turn the setting up and try passing it. YOu girly men play on rookie and beat the computer 45-0 with the falcons. Not to realistic to me.
And again I ask have you even played espn?

yes i have played espn and im not disputing that it wasnt fun, its just not as realistic as madden and i like realism being that i will be coachin football in a few years.

Actually the 2 times I played on Rookie it was more like 115-0 and i was playing with the Steelers. Passing on All-Pro and legend isn't too hard on ESPN with the exception of my All-Pro calibur reciever dropping the ball when he's wide open. That makes it pretty damn unrealistic if you ask me ESPN has pretty bad AI when compared to Madden, espceially on defense so I'm not getting your realism argument. I'll ask you, have you played this year's Madden?

why yes yes I have. Hey come on now the pros drop wide open pays all the time! Haven't you watched a steeler game latly? My team sucks ass. They have some of the best recivers and they drop the ball all the time. Any ways I just get mad when people say madden is better cause it is madden. And when they haven't even tried espn. Its like the x-box fan boys! And we all know about x-box fan boys jumping around in their green tights and only playing madden! Thats all. Don't knock it unless you try it!

I also believe the more hardcore football fans gravitate towards Madden. It's just a question of gameplay. That's the one area where Madden wins vs. ESPN. And for many that's really the most important.

i have madden 05 here played it once and it feels like the same crap from last year. i like the laymaker thing on defense though..but other than that the graphics are fugly( especially cheerleaders) and the presentation is just boring.

Why not? no it seems that there is always some other evilpenguin logged in at every site and instead of using 1 or 69 or some othe rnumber I just went with 9000. No real reason other than it amuses me.
My dad bought me Madden 2003 when it came out (when I had just gotten my Xbox and the only other game I had was Halo) and I thought it was okay, but not very much fun. ESPN 2K5 was very good in terms of how much I enjoy playing it. If a friend buys Madden 2005, then I will try it out, but 2003 did not impress me, and don't really want this years version. Since I hadn't bought any sports games since the 2003 series, I planned to buy new sports games this year. Sega got my money because of the price and I'm very happy about it. I will buy NHL and NBA 2K5, and I hope they are as fun as NFL.
A little bit off subject but I loved NBA Live 2003. It was a fun game that I really enjoyed and played the franchise mode alot. Madden didn't have the same feel.

IMO the single player game on Madden is what puts it over. Both games are fun online in there own ways but I for one have to buy Madden because the Franchise mode totally destroys ESPN's.
