That's what I've been hearing... the only reason I haven't tried them is because I have absolutely *zero* experience with those characters. As a child I was DC-only for whatever reason, so getting back into comics books as a (young) adult, I'm (clearly) gravitating towards characters I'm familiar with. I couldn't tell you one thing about either of those characters, other than the fact that Cap died recently to much media fanfare, and Daredevil is blind (thank you, horrific Daredevil film, for giving that bit of knowledge).

If you want to get more experienced with the characters, check out Brubaker's runs on both of them. Thats how I got into them. Right before then too, I didn't like Cap/Daredevil at all. Then I read both of those runs and it changed my opinion. I wouldn't miss a Daredevil/Cap issue now.
Brubaker is still working on Cap (& Cap and Bucky) and I don't know who's writing Daredevil, but after reading both of those, I really dig the characters.
I picked up Ultimate X-men at lunch today. Definitely intrigued. I've always liked some Kitty anyway but I'm liking where it's at so far.

I want to jump on to Daredevil, but I don't really want to get sucked into the Marval Universe (even though I'm jumping on the Ultimate line) it seems like every other month there's some crossover event and I don't want to have to feel that I need to grab other issues besides Daredevil or Cap to get the full story.

Oh hell. I ordered Daredevil 1-4, Captain America 1-3, and Punisher 1-3 from Midtown ($35 shipped). Now I'll be caught up if I want to pursue the series, and if not, oh well.

Thats a self control thing. Me, I suffer from it too. :)
Really, if you follow comic websites or have friends that read comics as well, you can piece together the main story line and the other comics involved run a small story line that runs at the same time period as the event. You don't really have to get the main issues, but you can. Brubaker's Captain America is tops. If you could only grab one, I'd grab that, but I do totally understand what you're saying.

Thanks for suggestions on books for my son. Went with Tiny Titans and Young Justice. Ended up getting myself Batman #1, apparently the variant, Suicide Squad, and Dead Shot. Wish I would've gotten ahold of the Superman books and a few others.

I just got finished reading The Avengers Childrens Crusade #7 and man....
That shit is pretty awful. Its like the worlds worst fan-fiction got picked up and Marvel ran with it. I don't want to stop reading with only 2 issues left though..... lame.

Children's Crusade #7 is pretty good for what it is. No reason for the X-Men to be there at all. Cyclops comes off as a major douchebag, and he is, but not to that extent. What is killing the series is the fact that it's been delayed several times. And that is something that just can't happen on a bi-monthly series.

I'm really loving Amazing Spider-Man. I'm glad I picked up the back issues to start at the Spider Island prelude issue. I'm considering getting Ultimates 1 and 2 and maybe trying one of the new FF books when I go pick up the new books next Wednesday. But I really need to stop picking up new series, haha.

I read through Ultamatum, Death of Spider Man and Fallout yesterday.
Ultimatum seemed rather poor, specially since I read just the five issues and had no point of reference for what was going on with characters like Dormammu who shows up for about a page. A lot of the deaths seemed kind of forced, except probably for the two in the final battle. There was a lot of random cuts too. I'm assuming that's all filled in in the side issues or you're just supposed to make it up in your head why Wolverine goes from fighting the Hulk at night, to the top of Peter's house with Kitty in the morning.
Spider-Man was so good that I'm disappointed that I never got into it sooner. The writing was great along with the art. I'm hopeful that the new stuff can hold up to it.
Fallout was pretty decent as well. It really sets up a lot of the stuff in the new books, which is why I wanted to read it to begin with.
I'm currently going through Ultimate X. After that, I think I'll be all set to take on the new Ultimate Comics books.

I really like FF. Yeah it's a bit slow but it's probably some of the best FF books I've read in a while. Still I have a question. Wasn't there a point before he died when Johnny Storm was going to have a kid with some random slut? Was it a plot that ended up going nowhere or did the girl have a miscarriage?

Daredevil seems to avoid the usual crossover stuff pretty well. For Shadowland you really only had to read the Shadowland mini series and regular Daredevil issues to keep up.
All of volume 2 is worth reading (though you can skip Echo: Vision Quest if you only want the Daredevil story)

I don't mind that 355 died, since the story was set up as a tragedy.

They did have a kid but it ended up the child wasn't really there's. Typical comic book BS. But yeah, it was a girl he meet in a club. I just found the anser to my question. The chick he got pregnent choose to hide herself in time to protect the baby from FF's enemies. Probably to be forgotten and never heard from again, kinda like that run Millar did a few years ago.

Well, with the DC reboot or whatever, I've found myself involved with comics for the first time in over a decade. Now, don't get me wrong, I've kept up with non-superhero graphic novels (Maus, Contract With God, Y: The Last Man, etc.), but as far as buying a monthly comic, well, I haven't in quite a long time.
My question is, what is the most cost effective way to get 4-5 different series delivered to my house monthly? The closest comic shop to me is about an hour and a half away and I'd rather not deal with driving there and potentially missing issues.
If anyone has any experience with HeavyInk, TFAW, MidTown or any other's monthly service, I would love to hear about them.
I've also looked into DC Subscription Service...with a buy 4 get 1 free going on right now, but I've heard that they are in horrible condition when you get them and you get the issues several weeks after they hit the stand. Please chime in on this if you've had experience with dealing with DC directly.
Thanks to anyone who responds.

I know that DC subscriptions are sent 3 weeks after they hit stands, but that is the price you pay for such a cheap rate. With their 5 for 4 deal you are only paying $20 per series for the year.
In regards to getting books delivered, I have been using http://www.impulsecreations.net/catalog/ for about three months now. Their service is great. If you have a comic on your pull list you will get it for 30% off retail. The shipping is about $5.50 regardless of the amount. They are easily the cheapest comic subscription service I have found. I checked Heavy Ink, Midtown, TFAW sci fi genre, etc.

TFAW is slightly expensive at cover cost, shipping is about over 3 for a comic, and they charge a quarter to bag and board.
I only had a one comic but I was getting hit for $6 for each month. Though the comic was in super fantastic shape.... not worth it if you can get somewhere else.

I'm going to be placing an order at www.dcbservice.com today or tomorrow. They have the cheapest prices that I've seen and they charge a flat rate of $6.25 for shippping. They advertise heavily on Comic Geek Speak and have a code, CGS8, that should take an additional 8% of the order.

As far as the DC New 52 are concerned, I've read Detective Comics, Animal Man, and Swamp Thing. I have Batman, Wonder Woman, Resurrection Man, Frankenstein: Agent of Shade and Suicide Squad coming to me.
I think that I'll be getting Detective, Batman, and one of the others for me (probably Swamp or Animal Man unless one of the titles I'm getting this week blows me away). I'll also be picking up Wonder Woman for my daughter who is so excited to get her first WW solo comic (she has been playing Justice League at recess for the past couple years!).

I dunno, I read the first issue of each of the new Ultimate series and it just seems bland. The very talented writers are not playing to their strengths. Also, there is no reason they should be 3.99. No way in hell are they worth that. I'd be more inclined to follow them if they were 2.99.
I'd also like to add, that while New Avengers 16.1 wasn't all that good, I am glad to see that Norman Osborn is going to be back in the thick of the Avengers universe. Now, we just need to get Bendis away from the books.

Yeah, the direct subscription from DC is exactly what was stated before, 3 weeks after release but not in a horrible mangled condition. If you're a collector and need everything mint then stay away. If you just want to read stories cheaply and don't care about mint condition then go this route. I've been doing it for the past two years. I've stopped with the relaunch because I may go the digital route after one month for $1.99/issue. If not I'll be going to trades.

Has anyone been using Marvel or DC's subscription services? i just picked a lot of books off both of them because of how cheap they were. And DC is offering a Buy 4 get 1 free deal.
Any issues I should know about that?
I've used both and you can see the DC opinion up top. Marvel arrives in the same condition but usually within a week of hitting shelves so you don't have to wait as long. There have been a couple of cancelations for what they've offered in the past two years like New Mutants, which is still ongoing, not being offered by mail. They'll just fold the remaining issues of your subscription into something else automatically and you have the option of changing it towards a different title. The only issues I've had with that is that some lazy ass doesn't look up your account number and just creates a new account for a title you're already subscribed to so I've had two of the same issues of Avengers coming each month until they corrected the issue. Happened twice.
Outside of that, the rates were better than DC and when it's time to renew they've usually offered even lower rates. Renewals can also be done for 2 years instead of 1.
Again, as with the DC post above, if you are a collector and want mint copies then go to a store or order from a place like DCBS. If you just want to enjoy comics cheaply and a reader copy is fine, this is your best bet legally.

Daredevil is really, really good. I know nothing about the character and after the first issue I'm totally down to put this on my pull list.
Punisher was enjoyable, I read the first three issues, just not my thing... I'm gonna pass for now. Captain America was also very enjoyable, but I didn't really get into the character, TBH, and I have like 23 books on my pull list. I'm gonna pass on him too.
Did anyone read Batman TDK or Superman last week? I can't even. TDK was like a sick joke it was so bad, and Superman bored me to tears. I took them both off of my list, especially because Action, Detective and Batman are all really, really good.
Also, Aquaman is a fucking badass and I can't wait for the next issue. Flash is fun, and All-Star Western is really fantastic, I'm hooked on that too.
If anyone hasn't tried Severed and likes horror, you're missing out. Scott Snyder is the man. Near Death is another new Image comic that really got me hooked, it's like a strange crime/hitman story so far.

Yeah, TDK may pick up, but honestly, #1 was so bad and there are two other quality Batman titles (and a couple other Bat-books that are worthwhile as well) so I see no point in keeping it around.
Honestly I thought that was perfect, because it draws the reader in. They made the situation in the book exactly what the real world is like. How seriously does anyone ever take Aquaman? How many times has he been the butt of a joke on Family Guy or Robot Chicken? I know I didn't want to pick the book up until I heard how good it was. I think it was done well because the reader can immediately identify with what's going on in this particular universe because the reader can identify with the attitude of the city and its citizens at large.

Quick question for you guys, in regards to getting rid of comics. What are good options, online of possible to get rid of them. I thought about potentially donating them, but nowhere around here makes sense. I'd love to keep some, buy had to cut down considerably. I think they just laid it on too thick. I mean even if all he does is 'talk to fish' do you go up to the guy and grill him about his supposed worthlessness? Do you give disbelieve towards the existence of Atlantis in this type of universe? This isn't what the real world is like so perspectives should be different. I think they tried too much to delve into the readers perspective of Aquaman so it just came out kind of...I don't know, out of character for me, broke immersion. That type of thing.

Also picked up the first 5 issues of Thor: The Mighty Avenger. Really fun read. I recommend it to any fan of Thor as it's a more lighthearted/humor retelling of Thor's origins. It deals more with a "man out of place" scenario that creates a lot of funny scenes. Also the art is perfect for this book. Defiantly going to pick up the last remanning issues. I wonder if it got cancelled or just completed it's run? Wish it was still going as I'd defiantly put it on my pull list.

Finally got around to reading a few comicbooks over the last few days. I read:
Daredevil #1 - really impressed with this. never really cared about Daredevil, but I am looking forward to getting into this series.
Savage Hawkman #1 - I enjoy this one, similar to Daredevil for me. never really cared for Hawkman, but I at least liked the first book enough to give the series a try.
Supernatural #1 (of 6) - not sure how I feel about this book. on one hand it is Supernatural so it has that going for it. on the other hand, I don't really feel compelled to give the rest of the series a shot.
Justice League of America #1 - really liked it, but I didn't figure otherwise.
Next reads are likely to be Suicide Squad, Deathstroke, Batman/Detective, and Superman/Action.

Superman isn't too hot, IMO. Action Comics is absolutely fantastic, but I removed Superman (and TDK) from my pull list after one issue. Just didn't do much for me at all.
I just finished Wonder Woman 1 and 2, and damn, this is a good read. I was hesitant because I'm not a big fan of that character, but this series is really great. Kind of horror-esque.

I cant read the Walking Dead anymore. It's great, but I want the whole story. I'll maybe read it up to the 100th issue, a month or 2 after it comes out.
Fear Itself was just okay. Secret Invasion & Civil War were better. And Uncanny X-men was a recap issue, i hate it on TV why would like it in Comic book.

Anyone able to recommend me a good Batman graphic novel to read? Already read through Dark Knight Returns, Year One, Long Halloween, Arkham Asylum, and Joker.
EDIT: After flipping through Amazon, it looks like Hush is a good choice. Long Halloween was probably my favorite of the ones I've listed, and Hush was written by the same author. Also, to those looking for Walking Dead collections, the hardcover collections are probably the best IMO. They release roughly 1 every six months, and the quality is pretty top-notch. I've bought them all and I haven't been disappointed.

My reason for saying at least a year is, assuming Compendium 2 includes the same number of issues as 1, the standard trade (16) will be released first with a probable delay until hardcover 8 and then ultimately followed by Compendium 2.

OK people. I need some trades to read. What is worth reading from the past 10 years or so of comics? Assume I have already read the older/classics like watchmen, v, DKR, Year One, Killing Joke, SIN City, 300, Basically everything Alan Moore and Frank Miller have done, etc.
I am currently reading walking dead. I recently read "Y the last man", Joker, 1602, Origin, the Maxx full series.
I am going to start DMZ when I am done with walking dead vol 15 and the rise of the governor.
I read avengers/invaders and was disappointed mainly because I was unfamiliar with some of the characters.
I would like to get into some marvel and DC books, but I am not sure where to start. Is there a marvel or dc universe with continuity? I don't want to read 'fantasy' one offs. Or have 500 issues erased (like I think they did in ASM. I hope that isn't true.)

All the major events (Civil War, Secret Invasion, Siege) Marvel has had over the past 10 years haven't been retconned out of existing (yet). If I were you, I'd read some of the background info on some of the hero's who pique your interest and start there and branch out as you go along. Otherwise, I started with Avengers Disassembled and went through the major arcs from there myself. I'm not huge into Marvel, so I may be wrong in some areas. I forgot what trade it is and personally I didn't like the story too much.
In the past, Sinister had a machine that would allow his mind to basically hop into a different body in case his body was destroyed or whatever. Anyways, when he was killed, the machine basically mindhopped him into Xavier's body.
Anyways, this lady (who became Lady Sinister) found the machine and she wanted to use it on herself. Xavier/Sinister, Shaw, and Gambit all showed up to stop her. Xavier was able to purge Sinister from his body. At the end of the story arc, Miss Sinister shows up. I'm not sure if she actually is Sinister and that's where his mind ended up going or what, but from the story itself, I think that's kind of what it hinted at.

To my knowledge, most of the recent Batman and Green Lantern stuff are still intact even after the New 52 reboot. So if you want into DC, I would recommend picking up any Batman with Grant Morrison as the writer (starting with Batman and Son) or John's Green Lantern run.
And if you haven't read Preacher yet by Garth Ennis (a Vertigo book) I would pick that up too. It was one of those books where I would pick up the first TPB...then when I was done go and pick up the next two...then the next two...until it was over. How tough is it to get tickets for Comic Con when they open up for purchase. Last year I was over in San Diego a few days before the convention and really wished I went since it looked pretty good with all the people piling in. I look online and I see horror stories from previous years. I tried to get BlizzCon tickets a few years ago but that was a total bust. I guess I will just try and hope for the best. At least I will have Anime Boston and PAX East at the least. On a side note, the one my girlfriend though she preregged but then realized later she didn't we waited in line about 15 hours for Anime Boston tickets. It was gruesome. It felt like a never-ending Disney line. Every 3 or 4 hours I thought I was there and you would make another turn around a corner and bam god knows how many more loops.

I'm not really a huge follower of Marvel and DC - the timelines get so crazy. Wolverine is in X-factor the same time he is running the new school as he is tracking down the people who sent him to hell, and fighting with Ninjas in Japan...
But, as not a hardcore DC person I am wondering how does this relaunch work? Like what does it change? I read Batman, Catwoman and Dark Knight so far. Catwoman doesn't know who Batman is anymore though? Is Hush, Harley Quinn, and all the rest still out there? I am just wondering a bit what to expect...
I guess I should just stick with Image, Boom, and the rest that I can follow a bit easier.
Harley Quinn is now part of the Suicide Squad but will be returning to Gotham and getting her 52 origin told soon. The DC 52 reboot is different because they kept parts of some of the original origins and storylines that happened in the old continuity and mixed it in with these new beginnings. It seems like these changes will be around for a while too since the new Superman movie costume is close to what he wears in the 52 books.

I thought it was a bad idea at first, also. Then I saw the amazing talent on board with it and I'm now looking forward to it. Brian Azzarello doing a 4-issue Rorschach series? Sign me up for that. JMS and Cooke being involved have me wanting it even more.
However, I don't really view it as necessary, but it will definitely sell.
Oh, it will sell, and I am sort of looking forward to it, too. Just don't think it's the greatest of ideas. Has that "The Kingdom" or "The Dark Knight Strikes Again" feel written all over it.

X-Force actually, but I agree, there's no secret he's spread thin. I dropped both his X-Men book and his regular ongoing. Since his Origin series canceled his current arc seems irrelevant.
Sabretooth's back. I was wondering what took em' so long. Loki only took a month or two revive. Cable, Human Torch & Black Bolt took a little longer. Only a matter of time for Nova, Star Lord & Thanos to have some cosmic imbalance that revives them too. I remember someone in Marvel saying "Human Torch is really dead" trying to convince people to buy the comic. You brought back Bucky, when do was get to see Uncle Ben again?

Sabretooth returning annoys me since his death was definitively written. Besides, that character doesn't bring enough to the table to warrant being brought back. The outcry for Sabretooth's return was deafening in it's silence. At this point, Marvel is a joke, even by comic book standards, when it comes to event deaths.

I thought Sabretooth had a pretty good death, then we find him in hell. Okay well he is in hell and then beheaded in hell with the hellsword or whatever the magical sword was... But now he is back and causing problems. Only ones who stay dead are the Waynes and Uncle Ben.
as for the new 52, is there any idea of what the changes were. Catwoman not knowng Batman is Bruce is a big change. I just felt like I was in a good place following batman with gotham city sirens and the other batman comics.
I hope Harley is still awesome. She is what partially got me into comics - starting with Batman animated series and then into the comics. I really liked the Harley series too from a while back. I got 2 overpriced Harley statues too.
On other comics how do people feel about Invincible right now? I lost interest for a while, but the last few issues have me interested again.
Walking Dead has been kind of slow to me for the last year.

Last I remember was that he sacrificed himself (in Fear Itself) but his place in history was replaced by Tanarus and only kid Loki knows what's up. That's all I know, but I don't read a lot of Thor stuff. The old timey way they all talk is a turn off for me.

Thor will be back since Gods can't really die and in a prophecy, he is said to come back. And given that there is an Avengers vs X-Men teaser with fighting Storm, I think it's safe to say that will see him back soon.
My guess is that he will be back at the end of the Osborn vs Avengers saga and put an end to that before AvX.

The Ultimate line has been relatively decent on leaving characters dead. The Ultimatum event, while garbage as a whole, wiped out a lot of people that haven't come back yet. The two characters that I can think of having been brought back in the Ultimate Marvel history would be Gwen Stacy and Beast. That's about the only two I can think of in that line that have been brought back, although I'm sure I'm missing a few.

I'm a complete noob when it comes to comic books; I enjoy a majority of the movies (Batman, Xmen, SinCity, Avenger characters). I recently wanted to start reading comics since the walking dead started. I'm going to read that series and pick up the Y THE LAST MAN series as well. I recently went to a few local comic shops and was recommended the X-force, so I picked up sex & violence and have read Watchmen as well, both books I enjoyed.
I've bounced around to different pages on this forum and saw Astonishing X-Men was recommended as well as Uncanny (not sure if Xmen or x-force or both). I have a feeling I'm going to be more interested in trades, but I like to collect random stuff as well. So I wouldn't mind picking up something from #1 and on...after browsing the web Xmen vs. Avengers looks interesting and there appears to be starting fresh late March early April. Is there any other No. 1's coming out?
So I guess I have a few questions and sorry I cannot read through 130+ pages of a forum. So how is Xmen vs. Avengers different from Civil War? And would you recommend one over the other or both? I would be interested in the origins of Xmen as well (trades), I would have to do more research on that subject. Can anyone recommend any batman trades to pick up? (I’ve really enjoyed the Christopher Nolan movies). Also I’ve seen SinCity and don’t care for it, would the comic be any better? And how does everyone feel about digit comics? 1 more question is there any good comic book sites you would recommend? Thanks.

Can't give you anything regarding X-Men since I'm mostly a DC guy, and I tend to wait for cheap Marvel trades.
With Batman, definately go with Scott Snyder. He has been writing some of the most intriguing Batman stories I've ever read. I think The Black Mirror is about to come out collected, and the same with Gates of Gotham. Gates of Gotham was more Kyle Higgins, but it still wasn't a bad read.
But he's writing the Batman book now, which is up to issue 6. It's one of those stories that makes you hate comics because you have to wait a month before you get the next issue. Definately recommend picking up the last six issues of those.
Some, including myself, love Grant Morrison's stuff. He has quite a few trades of Batman stuff out, but he can be hit or miss since he's a writer that likes to...experiment....with storytelling a bit. It can feel convoluted and rushed at times, but depending on what you look for in a story, he can knock it out of the park.

Well, of course. I was merely using his like of the Nolan films as a good transition into some of Batman's biggest adventures. But when it comes to DC heroes, I doubt anyone can argue that anyone has more must-read graphic novels than Batman. I'd also personally recommend.
The Dark Knight Returns
The Man Who Laughs
A Death in the Family
Dark Victory
Gotham by Gaslight
Knightfall (Definitely good to check out for Dark Knight Rises, because this series is about Bane)

I think if you do Year One, Long Halloween, Dark Victory, Haunted Knight for good measure, and The Killing Joke, you'll more than be covered on the absolute top Batman essentials. A Death in the Family could follow after. Hush and Arkham Asylum are good reads.
The (I believe) non-canon Dark Knight Returns and Dark Knight Strikes Again by Frank Miller are also popular stories for an older Batman, as is Year 100.
There are a whole lot of quality in between Batman books and series too. If you like Hush, you should skip Hush Returns from what I've heard, but might be interested in Heart of Hush and the Streets of Gotham Series. Gotham Central is critically acclaimed but not traditional Batman tales.
All of the above, death of Batman aside, are also good because you don't have to worry about whose currently Robin, Batgirl, or even Batman (compared to the newer stories where Dick is Batman at some points).
bigdaddybruce44
02-25-2012, 06:32 PM
Yeah, DKR and DKSA are, indeed, non-canon. They take place/took place on Earth-31, aka the Miller-verse. Though, Frank Miller also wrote Year One, which is/was canon. I have not followed the New 52 very closely, so I have no idea what is canon anymore, nor do I know if the multiverse exists.

Hey guys, I have been going through my old books and I am tempted to get back in. Currently reading Civil War which is ok and Identity Crisis which I am liking. Luckily my local library seems to have a decent selection.
First off where is everyone buying bags and boards these days? I came across a ton of books that don't have b&bs. Also some of my old cheap bags need to be replaced due to tearing. I only have 90s books.
Also I noticed it doesn't seem like there is any place really dedicated to comic deals. Am I just missing it? It seems like 40-50% off trades is the standard prices, but still I figured there would be somewhere with decent traffic posting new deals regularly. All I have found is occasional threads on various comic book forums dedicated to specific stores.

That's about it. There is no real comics deal site/forum. There are some comic sites like BargainGraphicNovels selling publisher overstock, but like all comic websites, unless you're ordering a ton at once to get free shipping, standard shipping kills the deal. There are several publisher overstock sellers on Amazon but their have deceitful listing practices when it comes to remainder marks on the books.
The number of people buying comics is small, and it seems like the average person is fine paying near cover price for things. The next subset is happy with the 30 to 50% discounts from Amazon and other sites. The subset looking to get really great deals is even smaller and thus have to scavenger from site to site, forum to forum, figuring out deals on our own.
There really isn't a lot of "CAG mentality" when it comes to comics purchases for a lot of people, at least from what I've seen on forums.
I heard Batman "The Black Mirror" is good, but I have not read it yet. Waiting for the library to get it.
It's excellent. I read it when it was originally printed in Detective comics. This combined with Snyder's current run on Batman in DC's new 52 are the best Batman I've read in a while.

To be honest most 90s books aren't worth much. You may want to get an Overstreet Price guide from your library and look them up first.
Call around to local comic shops for bags and boards. They recently went up, but a decent price for non-Mylar is $5.50 or less for 100 bags and $7 for boards (at least by me). I usually buy Silver Age Size, since they will fit anything since the 1960s (+/- Giant sized and some others). You can also fit 2 comics back to back in a silver bag if you want to cover them, but they are not worth a bag by themselves.
http://www.comicshoplocator.com/ Will help you locate some stores around you, but it doesn't list every store in the area. It will also show if they participate in free comic book day or not. Free Comic Book Day is held the first Saturday in May each year.
I know someone is going to pick this post apart, but it is just some general help.

Thanks. I am not really worried about archiving them for collectablity sakes, but more just to keep them from getting banged up any more and curled in the boxes. The Amazon bags were $7 so not bad and I think they qualify for prime, but the boards were $12 so definitely sounds like I could do better.
Unfortunately the closest store is about 30-45 minutes now. The closest store closed a while back.

I travel weekly for my job so I snagged airfare & rental @ no charge due to points, and we totally lucked out on a hotel that didn't realize the weekend. We got it booked for $70/night. As of today same hotel, same week $209/night. I can only imagine it getting higher as we get closer.
If you're ok with driving you might have to get on the outskirts and then drive to a trolley stop and ride that into the convention center.
Here's the trolley details for this year. It's $15 for the week and it's definitely worth it to ride this rather than fight parking next to the convention center.

Good luck with your bookings.

I use ComicZeal and it's entirely worth the $5. I paid $8 for it and it was worth even that. It's got dropbox capability so you can upload your books to your dropbox and d/l them on the go to ComicZeal. Plus you can upload via iTunes as well.
Comixology I believe is limited to what's in their store. I've never been able to figure out how to load my cbr/cbz's to the app.
~~side note as well - Just grabbed my SDCC 2012 tix today. So flipping excited.
Thanks. I'll probably cave and spend the $5. I just spent a while searching for something and ended up downloading Pulp Reader (it just came out in February and is free for a limited time according to the website) and it kind of works. I like that you can create folders and stuff for different series but I have no idea how to use the "Smart Collection" feature. The graphics are nice and it does the whole pinch to zoom well and there is no loading between pages. So far so good... I've only been playing with it for a 1/2 hour though.

Is anyone currently reading Animal Man or Swamp Thing? I plan on picking up the trades of these when they come out, but I'm wondering if I should skip them and read the old school ones by Alan Moore and Grant Morrison. Does anyone prefer the new 52 over the originals?

Both books and both volumes (New vs. Old) are amazing. Having a little bit of understanding regarding Moore's run on Swamp Thing is helpful in my opinion (especially with regards to Abby and the Arcanes etc), but not necessary. Morrison's Animal Man, while great in its own right, isn't really necessary to understand whats happening in Lemire's run.

Most cbr or cbz files will need to be torrented. The places that are selling digital trades (iBookstore, comixology, etc...) require the use of their proprietary apps. Demonoid is a great place for older books (and current releases) PM if you need an invite.

Regarding Animal Man, remember what I said about Morrison hitting it out of the park? Animal Man is one of those books. But you have to pick up all three tpb's to get the full experience. But you wont be disappointed. One of the best character arcs of all time IMO.
And with Moores Swamp Thing, its probablymy favorite thing Moore has written. Beautiful, but haunting story.

This is my first post in your comic thread, so hey guys! Regarding your Swamp Thing recommendation, would this be Swamp Thing or Saga of the Swamp Thing? I looked it up on Amazon and am thoroughly confused as to which to add to my wishlist.
I have cut way back on single issues in the last 5 years. The latest added to my pull list is Image's Saga by BKV. I'm pretty excited to read this when it comes out.

It's pretty weird. Vaughan is doing some really off the wall stuff in the first issue. If you enjoyed Y: The Last Man and Ex Machina don't assume you'll enjoy Saga. It's nothing like either of those series. I'm not saying you'll hate it, just be aware that it's quite different and somewhat bizarre.

Snyder is a superior story teller and his Swamp Thing is just as impressive as Alan Moore's take on the character. Animal Man is another great title.
I want to add I, Vampire to that list. I was in a comic shop in Portland, OR and picked up the first 6 issues. I was impressed and I am putting it on my pull list now.

I'm completely overwhelmed by all the comic books that I want to read. I have all the essential batman trades, animal man, swamp thing (old first, then new when they hit TPBs), chew, uncanny x-force all on my pull list. I'm always looking for something new weekly and I've been eyeing The Manhattan Projects #1 by image comics lately.I'm currently reading The Walking Dead and Y: the last man, so I have plenty of reading to do before I get to my pull list.
I'm currently torn between buying individual issues or just getting the TPBs and collecting. I really wish there was a way to buy digital comics that I could read anywhere (like my PC and touchpad). I like collecting stuff I just move a lot and it's a pain in the ass to be moving it all the time, so I do like the digital idea. It's much easier to read on a tablet as well. My dilemma is do I just say fuck it and download it, or do I buy trades which take up space and be more of a hassle. I feel guilty downloading stuff as I prefer to support the artist involved, and I like having a physical copy. I completely contradicting myself...and kinda just ranting.

Pick up the Saga of the Swamp Thing, and there should be 6 volumes of it. There's more, but the ones you want to read are from Alan Moore. The regular Swamp Thing that you might see could be the current series. I'm not sure how good that is, but with Scott Snyder writing, I don't think it could be too terrible.

I just started "Invincible" over the weekend and I love it so far. This is exactly what a good superhero story should be like. It's just impossible to read everything but I'm realizing that for the most part comics tell way more interesting stories than anything on TV or in the movies. I'm looking for suggestions on something to read next. Even though I started reading comics 2 years ago, I still consider myself pretty new to this so I don't know what to go for next. So far I've read:
The Watchmen
Alien vs. Predator Omnibus 1 & 2 (I'm a huge Predator fan)
Batman Year One
The Walking Dead (I think I'm up to 90-something, close to current)
Y The Last Man
I really liked Y The Last Man and The Walking Dead since they aren't superhero stories and they have a more mature theme. Anything else like that out there?

"Mature" has always been a misnomer when applied to certain material of any medium. Content that is labeled as mature is, ironically, frequently teeming with immaturity. You probably already know this but I'm just putting it out there as general information.

I do this thing where I read comics for a few months, lose interest and go back six months later completely lost and buy different books than I was buying six months prior. This makes my collection incredibly random. The last phase I was in was hands down the shortest. I had been missing Secret Avengers and Iron Man and I was interested in Future Foundation since I was never able to get into the FF.
I made a special trip to the shop and bought Future Foundation on my lunch break, read it and just ...nothing. I haven't been back to the shop since.
I love Runaways though, anything new with Runaways? Has the team shown up in any other books? There was a Young Avengers/Runaways thing around Secret Invasion ...I think? I'm guessing there are no new developments there.
I saw the posts above mine and I have to say I also love Invincible. Great stuff. I'm way behind on that also. I think I have the first four trades.

I think it comes from it originally being "for mature audiences" and people just end up calling the material mature instead.

I figured you did know, it's just a pet peeve of mine when things that are labeled mature are some of the most immature things to be found.
"Wait, so if my book is labeled 'mature readers' I can show a lot of boobs and curse like a 14 year old playing Halo hopped up on Mountain Dew? Yeah!"
