View Full Version : PSP Slim Questions
I'm seriously considering upgrading to a slim but I still have a few questions:
1. How is the USB charging? Is it worthwhile? How long does it take? It would be helpful to me to be able to charge without the ac adapter.
2. The size and weight. I know it's lighter and slimmer but does it make a considerable difference?
3. Is there any need to hold onto the phat once owning the slim?
4. TV output...I'd probably go component with this...but is it worth it? Does anyone regularly use it on a TV?
5. Are there any disadvantages of the slim that the phat might have done better?
6. How much faster is game loading?
Thanks in advance.
2. yes you will feel the difference.
3. no, unless you want to use homebrew for the IR function
4. no, the quality is very bad.
5. the only thing missing is the ir port

1. Honestly, I don't know how long it takes, but if you plug it in overnight you'll be fine by morning
2. The first thing I thought when I pulled it out of the box was WOW! I never expected it to feel as light as it did. HOWEVER, it does feel considerably "cheaper" with a lot more plastic involved.
3. Only for homebrew purposes, but even then, increasingly the answer is "no"
4. I have it, the quality's not great and I rarely use it, but I only spent around $10 for the cables so I figured why not.
5. IR port, which I never used.
6. It's noticeable.

1. *shrugs*
2. You will definitely notice how much lighter it is. It kind of sucks that the back is glossy like the front now so it's also noticeably slick and slips from my hands more often. Thank god for wriststraps.

5. What I mentioned on #2.

I use the component output quite a bit. Its an awesome device to put DVD rips, UMDs, and other misc videos you got off the net (youtube, etc) on your TV. Someone said the quality was bad? No its not...that depends on however you encoded it in the first place. Done right, it looks as good as a DVD.

1. It's a bit crap and takes longer than regular AC charging. I have an extra battery and a charger so I just go that route. It's the fastest way possible and means I only lose about a minute to change batteries when my power runs out. This setup will cost you an extra ~$50 to get going though.
2. You will notice it as soon as you take it out of the box. You can fit it in a (large) pocket now. You can also have comfortable extended play sessions as well.
3. Not unless you have a signature series model, no.
4. I've tried it but didn't like it. I'm planning on picking up HORI's new grip attachment at the end of the month and that may make it worth it. TV out for video is the SHIT though. I load up that memory stick, skip over to a friend's to fry my brain and watch some Pee-Wee's playhouse all with a little machine I always carry with my anyways.
5. The construction of the model. It seems a little cheaper. I wish the front panel and screen stayed as one piece and the matte finish was kept for the back panels. I'm not a huge fan of the UMD door either. When I got my phatty the first thing I said was 'Damn, now THIS is a $250 machine' yet I didn't feel the same way at all when I opened my slim. The packaging was a bit crap as well. I got over all that once I started using the slim though.
6. Depends on the game but it's not a huge difference. It stands to reason that newer games would take advantage of this more but I haven't tried any of them on a phatty.
What color are you going with? Personally I went with the white but wish I had held out for one of the limited edition colors. The matte bronze and GoW red colors are pretty damn sick.

Where is this matte bronze one you're talking about?
I hate glossy handhelds. I've been looking for a replacement matte cover for my fat PSP because I hate the stupid fingerprints that get all over it. I'm considering getting the God of War version but who knows. I love my homebrew and will probably only upgrade if I can do homebrew easily on the slim version.

I think the bronze one is the Monster Hunter limited edition.

Here I am! (http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-12x-49-en-70-2mg0.html)
I'm pretty sure it's a glossy finish but the color will definitely reduce the appearance of smudgy fingerprints.
I was thinking of going with the white.

That's what I have now. You can buy almost all accessories match it. The nicest thing about the white has got to be the lack of fingerprints on it. Yeah, a tiny bit of dirt will build up after a few months but that can be wiped off quickly and it looks good as new again.

Yeah I noticed that with the DS...my phat PSP used to drive me crazy but then I just gave up trying to keep it pristine looking. I just wipe it off now when it gets really ugly looking. I'd probably prefer the white though.

I have the silver one and it still looks flawless 8 months later.

1. It does take longer- and the problem is if you run your PSP into the ground, it will not be able to be charged via USB because there has to be enough battery life left in it to boot the PSP up and enter USB mode. This actually happened to me once when I took my PSP on a trip and only brought the USB mini cable to charge by. I ended up going to a local game store and picked up a different USB charging cable (see below) which solved my problem. Also, when charging in USB mode you can't charge-and-play because the PSP must be in USB mode to charge.
What you can do is buy a separatae USB-AC charging cable. Instead of charging via the USB port, these cables still get their power via USB, but charge the PSP using the standard charging port at the bottom. This allows you to charge a fully drained PSP, allows simultaneous charge-and-play, and I am willing to bet it charges faster than USB mode too. The cables are quite cheap, here is an example:

The prices vary, you can easily get them for under $10.

I do homebrew on slim. You just can't use kernel mode, so you have to load PRX's, instead of an actual elf. Not a big deal at all if it is your code. I find a lot of homebrew apps not fixed to work in user mode though. So check with the apps you like.
Yeah, the phatty may feel like better quality. But a large part of that is weight. I would take the weight savings over the more rigid feel, better shoulder buttons, and better umd door anyday.
Also, no one mentioned that the D-Pad sucks on the the Phat. Almost useless. The slim is much better, though not as good as a dual shock.

How's the video out look while playing PSP games...I'm tempted to get the GoW version but I don't normally play portables so if I can play on TV it will be better...also if I have a PS3 can I hook up to it and play PSP games with the Dual Shock3?

Game video out is a bit crap IMO. It's definitely playable but don't expect to be wowed by the graphics in any fashion. I think the lack of a full screen fill mode is asinine and the fact that I have to 'zoom in' to get a full picture is ridiculous. Video out is perfect though.
As far as I know you cannot use the DS3 to play PSP over remote play. I used to have a set of grips for my phatty that worked like a charm and am planning on picking up one of these (http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-bh-49-en-70-2nvx.html) in the hopes it will work just as well if not better.
