Alright, my two friends and I have been trying to figure out what game this is for YEARS. When we were younger we were playing a game on the Sega Genesis and it was an RPG. All we remember are these things...

The game was side scrolling until you went into certain areas (buildings?, dungeons)

There was a well we were trying to go down but this character wouldn't let us go down and we couldn't figure out how to.

We ended up going into this dungeon and if I recall correctly it was a jail of some sort. We were now in the top down view and we fought these skeletons. The combat was turn based and we weren't used to the turn based concept so we had to stop playing because we couldn't figure out how to fight anything.

I posted this somewhere else and they linked me over to this forum and said it would help. Before they sent me over here they gave me a top RPGs list for Sega and I think the game is LandStalker! The box cover looks REALLY familiar. I thought the game was Shining In The Darkness because I remember a boy with a sword and the wizard. But the LandStalker box is similar it has the boy with the sword attacking an enemy. I know the game isn't side scrolling or turn base but it was years ago so our memories could be wrong. I know there is a well in the game because I looked it up on game FAQs. Is there ever a part where you can't get into the well? I think I've finally found it but I really need to know, can anyone help?!

That sounds like Y's since it was both side scrolling and top down for a Sega system and was not turn based but like Zelda.

Not Ys. The only Ys game for Genesis (Ys III) was sidescrolling the entire time.

Try checking the FAQs for the games you think it is and ctrl+f "well" and see if you get anything.

I did, and there is a well in LandStalker but I didn't see anything about you not being able to get into it. I know it had cartoony graphics just like LandStalker too. So I think it might be it...

I remember that Y's had a game where there was both 2d and 3d perspectives on a SEGA system. Maybe you was playing the Mega Drive version of Y's with a adapter?

Sword of Vermillion? I kinda remember that being top down in certain areas like towns, but it was sidescrolling action.
