Any ideas why I would get bad screen tearing when I play games at fullscreen?

When I play games in a window, even slightly smaller than fullscreen, I don't get screentearing?

I know next to nothing about PC gaming, so I'm sorry if I can't elaborate any more than that. 8-)

I built my own PC a little over half a year ago, and it's pretty powerful... a friend, and some other searches, said that it might be because my monitor is too large, and the refresh rate and graphics card (or something like that) don't get along.

You have to turn on vertical-syncing/v-sync for the game so the framerate doesn't ramp over your monitor's refresh rate, if you want to avoid tearing.

That worked. Thanks.

An unfortunate side effect of VS is that it can cause horrible control lag. This can be remedied by enabling triple buffering.

However, it's generally advisable to avoid VS unless the tearing is absolutely unbearable as it can greatly impact system performance.

It's fairly technical, but on the whole, with newer games, VS = bad.

Yeah, I'd say just try to get used to the tearing. I don't turn on v-sync on any of my games, but the tearing seems to passive that I don't notice it.
