View Full Version : Are there any girls out there in existence on this man - manifested site?

I'm a girl as you probably all know and I've announced proudly. Hence my signature. But anyways, I was wondering if I was the absolutely only girl on this entire site or if I'm with female company, because it would sure be comforting to know that I'm not the only person on this site surrounded by a bunch of... guys. If you're a girl, speak up! So I won't feel so.. isolated. Thanks.
Figured I'd ask. :?

I can't figure out why more girls don't play games (unless they're all closet gamers, or something). I would think a lot of guys would dig that in a girl......kind of like finding a girl who loves football.

I'm a female gamer too. Check the avatar!
GBA and PS2 player....but I go all the way back to "Pong" and Atari 7800 and was a fixture in the video game arcades of yesteryear. Now it's all about my GBA and PS2. So I really know what it's like to be a lone female in this male-dominated subculture...
There are a number of websites and message boards dedicated to female gamers. Here are a couple...

My sister and I are both girl gamers. I got her onto games ever since we were little and played on Nintendo's 8-bit system. Here's a little about my gaming history for those who are curious or just plain bored.
# of female friends who also play: 0
Most hardcore moments: playing 3 days straight when Street Fighter came out on SNES
Fave genre: RPGs
First time I cried in a video game: when Palom and Porom turned to stone in FF2
Last time cried: when Aeris died in FF7
final thoughts: I'm not as hardcore as I used to be

I think female gamers are somewhat ashamed of it too. Just as a straight guy wouldn't want to be considered just ' one of the girls', there's probably a stigma with a girl just 'being one of the guys'. Well come to think of it that girl in the Drew Carey Show was buddies with the guys, hell what do I know

Girl gamer here. I started playing when I was a little kid on the Atari 2600, and I have very fond memories of the old arcades. Now I play on the Gamecube and PS2. I'm an animation freak too. I even went to school to learn how to do it, and if I ever come into some money, I'd love to go back and finish. My goal was to someday do character models for a game company. I'm also a big X-Files fan, although I don't yet have the last 3 seasons on DVD. Other "guy" activities I enjoy are looking at cars (especially old muscle cars) and building models of just about anything. What can I say, I was always a tomboy when I was a kid and just never grew out of it. I don't mind being one of the guys either, I actually kind of like it. I'm pretty sure I don't smell either *sniffs pit* yep, no smell here.

There's nuttin to be ashamed of if you're a female gamer. I'm female and have been an active gamer since I was a young kid, which was a loooong time ago. Most of the females I know would rather discuss hair and make-up and clothes and jewelry while I'd rather discuss the latest console game deals or the latest hi-tech gadgets. I think many hard-core female gamers get along better with men than women just because the non-gaming women often don't understand the joy of gaming. Go figure.
Then again I can't understand the joy in shopping for clothes or jewelry or attending Tupperware parties or Avon gatherings or...
When I'm elderly and on my deathbed, I don't care if I can't go to the bathroom by myself. As long as I can still play video games I'll be happy. :D

What's this talk about girls being ashamed? I'm not ashamed at all! I'm really into video games, computers, anime... I don't hide it at all. In my experience most girls prefer to be or act dumb even just about stuff in general. They know nothing about computers, especially, which for some reason bugs the hell out of me. I don't know any girl gamer as hardcore as me, and I am not even that hardcore!
My hardcore days were when the NES came out. I played the NES all the time and then later on the SNES, in addition to Legos! (Man, I loved Legos) My friends growing up were mostly boys, even through high school. Once I entered middle school, I unintentionally took a hiatus from video games (i.e. missed the whole n64, dreamcast, saturn "era") As high school came to a close, I became re-interested, and I'm in a long-term relationship with a pretty hardcore gamer. We have great times!
So, I know that was probably too much information, but I am proud that I'm a gamer and have always been proud. I'm proud that I am NOT like other girls my age (I'm 21).
And whoever made that smell comment: 1) it's rude, and 2) it's not true.

I don't think anyone should be ashamed of being a gamer, especially girls, because it's part of who you are. Also, Legos rocked.......in my basement at my parents' house I still think there are about 2 or 3 of those big 33 gallon plastic boxes filled with Legos that I used to build outrageous structures with.

With gaming studies becoming an actual career path these days, I'd be interested to see the results of an in-depth analysis about the scism between girls that game and girls that don't.
I remember seeing something on the Discovery Channel awhile back analyzing how genetics plays a role in why men lean more towards technical jobs then women (also talked about why men are averse to "sensitivity," but thats a topic for CheapAssDating...). I wonder if the same thing applies here? Is there an actual genetic rule that girl gamers are an exception to? It'd be interesting to find out.
by the way...

yay, i'm not the only women in here. hip hip, hooray :) also , i enjoy comic books, sci-fi a bit, some of anime, and i'm definitely a hard-core gamer. i play every day. things like vice city make me go ga-ga. you can't always find a girl who enjoys blowing heads off of bad guys, then stealing a car for a getaway and bailing out at the last second to be plummeted into the water and blow the helicopters out of the sky with a rocket launcher. well, at least not that i know of.
hard-core or even normal gaming girls are hard to find nowadays, especially in my school. when boys talk about gaming i tend to keep my mouth shut, because if i were to butt in about how much i liked anything, they'd look at me like i had 42 heads and scream.
oh yeah, i also enjoy football. i'm a big fan of the pats, hate to say it for all those people who are resentful we won the superbowl but since i live in MA i am a huge pats fan and i watched every single one of their games. also enjoy other teams too you know. i'm not trying to "suck up" or make up anything like some other guy accused a girl of doing because all of this is true. just because your not used to hearing all these things about a girl doesn't mean that we don't exist. i very proudly would like to announce that i DO exist, though sorry to say that i'm taken, by a male gamer and basketball player kind of (i enjoy basketball as well) so no cheapassdating.com for me :) but i would stick around and enjoy the quirky topics that men would come up with. heh.
big fan of FF, GTA games (as mentioned), my favorite kind of topics are RPG, platforming, shooting, fighting, driving, oh what the hell- anything, as long as its a good game and im not easily bored by it. i can't stand horror games though. silent hill 3 gives me the shivers- turning walls into flesh and floors into blood? sorry, but nooooo. i think i'll pass. and i'd be surprised for you to find a girl like me that DOES enjoy someones limbs, head, neck, flesh being peeled off in a horror movie. :-&
(my boyfriend enjoys horror flicks but i don't, not ones that are gory anyway. he likes to graphically describe to me whats happening on the phone, as someone's eyes get ripped out, a brain gets splattered, and what not  . most of the time its just him exaggerating though. he likes to push my buttons.) :?
... i think i've got myself a keeper.
ps. i went crazy for legos when i was a kid. you name it, i loved it.

This thread is getting pretty long, in general i believe that guys are naturally more attracted to gaming in general.
Guys in general are stimulated visually, Girls are more stimulated by relationships and feelings.
Language is another example, guys tend to be more specific and to the point, while girls tend to be more discriptive.
Society can also play a part in it. Guys are more expected to play games, while girls are expected or influenced to pick up other hobbies.
----------------------------------------------------------
Yes I got rid of all my toys too, but ive managed to rebuild what I lost :) Transformers, Thundercats, GI Joe. My advice on those TF remake collectors, just wait. Ive seen so many TRU's full of shelf sitters, so those 29.99 TF remakes are due for a clearance. CAG style.

completely offtopic, but it busted my brain on how to why sear's would have a crank-yanker theme in their commercial. or perhaps im just delusional.

yes, I can tell you all that I find a girl who plays video games a turn on. Going to Gameworks on a Friday night and seeing a hot girl doing a quarter circle fireball in Marvel vs Capcom is 10 times hotter then some girl playing pool.
Damn straight its hot seein a girl play a fighting game. BUT having that girl hand your ass to you in said game is anything but hot.
On a side note, my ex used to play CS and BF42 with me. Now she plays Gunbound like crazy. Sigh, how did I let a girl like that go. Oh yeah cuz she was bi

I'm sure other girls dig GTA and FPS games, I just don't meet that many.
There used to be this game shop I would go to that had 8-player LAN Halo setup...4 gaming rigs with 4 futons...and there would be chicks in there from time to time playing.
But alas, they're long gone.

Well I just spotted this thread. Yep, I'm female, a gamer, and not afraid of to show it. Woohoo! I started playing games when I was old enough to hold a controller and went from Atari 2600 and Intellivision to the NES in 85. Since then its all been downhill. I buy tons of games, play them at home, work and inbetween. And I'll literally play every genre except FPSs. Burned myself out on those in the mid 90s during the Doom/Quake craze and haven't recovered yet. Also not too big on sports titles, probably the same reason but I will play them. My favorite genre is probably RPGs - hell I don't even mind random battles anymore! - and um, Diablo 2. God only knows how many hours I've put into that game. Just mentioning it makes me want to play it again.
Did I hide my gaming in high school? No! I was the freak that loved heavy metal and played video games. Most of my friends from school could be prodded into checking out a game or two and when I was even a lil younger all the guys wanted to hang out at my house because I had the latest and greatest consoles and games around always.
I also like football, am crazy about the LSU Tigers college football team, and will watch other sports as well. Am into many geeky pursuits such as being a "lite" anime watcher, fantasy novel enthusiast, etc. I just wish there were more gamer grrls instead of having to hear about how its a "kids hobby" from other chickies my own age (22). Luckily I do have one friend that's into certain games (music/rhythm, platformers, the Sims, Mario Party and fighters). That's it. :P

And most "male" gamers are total geeks that girls don't want to get caught being seen with. Or total stoners. Or both. Atleast that's the case around this area. The girl gamers I know are all quite attractive and don't have ten kids in tow like the rest.

Oh yah and a tip for any dude out there looking to snag a "gaming chick". Just hang around any mall that has a mini arcade equipped with DDR, Dance Maniax or any other Bemani game. DDR nuts like myself are usually female and also like anime. Games/DDR/anime - it usually goes together. I've met some cool people when I used to hang around places with the DDR machine installed but lately have been working too much to. Those that are afraid of having their asses handed to them at games might want to stay away though because we tend to be hardcore. :D

You don't need to put your nose right on these people. If you're in the same arcade as them, you can smell it. Usually, the closer you are to them, the stronger it is. You have a nose don't you? All you need to do is walk by.

Yep, it's probably worth getting involved with drug dealers and carrying around controlled substances just because you don't have something to do to kill a few hours on a saturday night.
Don't forget to tack on the overly harsh sentences that any jurisdiction has for possession and use of drugs and drug paraphenalia.

You know, this entire thread is starting to bother me. It's obvious that there aren't a shortage of women who enjoy or frequently play videogames. Sure, the hobby is still overwhelmingly dominated by men.

I'm also a girl. And at 30, probably the one of the oldest ones around here too. :? I also started way back when with the 2600. Got out of gaming for a few years, since none of my friends played video games. After getting out of high school I wanted to get back into it but I think the whole 3D thing scared me some, like I thought it would be too complicated or something. Well, that and trying to adjust to living the "adult" life of paying bills and keeping a roof over my head. Shame I missed out on the Dreamcast and Saturn era.

Veering slightly off-topic, I'm not gothic and play DDR. One of the few, as I have yet to see a large group of non-gothic people playing.
My local newspaper actually recently interviewed *goth* kids playing DDR (because they hang out in HORDES), and then ran an article about this "new" DDR craze (I laughed at "new"), and how these "pasty" teens are dancing all over the dance pad as if they're in a, well basically stoned, daze. Stuff like that. I wish I could find the article. And they didn't even try to make the game itself look positive (which it is: a helluva lot of fun). They just concentrated on the "walking dead" kids. Talked about their clothes, their attitudes, quoted a few. It was really terrible. It made the game look bad because they were negatively describing the "strange" type of teens that played it.
*This is what the paper ran, I'm not trying to offend any gothic folk here.

I agree moiety (k good I spelled it right). Where is the line where you become a stoner? If you define yourself just as 'casual' or every once in a while, then I say that is a stoner.
And to JSweeney, its not just 16 year old guys who fantasize about their dream video game girl. Girls do it too regardless. If they didn't then there would be no Sex in the City, no Beckham craze, no OC. Everyone wants what they can't have regardless of age. Its only when you get older that you start to realize maybe you won't get that dream job, car, spouse etc. Hence midlife crises. But its not like you just stop having that ideal image.
This is off topic.. but what in the hell does the "OC" stand for anyway? I dare not watch it just to find out. Television disturbs me.

Here's a funny story about girls and gaming. My girlfriend absolutely loathes gaming. I kept trying to get her into it, but no luck. So one day I get her to play Power Stone and she actually likes it! I was amazed! So every once in a while we would play against each other and all was good. Of course, due to way too much pracitce I could have just kicked her ass, but I didn't play my best so she wouldn't get frustrated. So stupid me one time let's slip that I was playing my best. Well that was not the right thing to say because she got quite pissed. From this day on she will never play a video game with me again.

When I read that, I thought of my aunt. She always told everybody, "Let me make my own mistakes," and has she ever made some whoppers. Drugs and drinking filtering down to younger and younger people as time goes on is definitely interesting, from an intellectual POV. It's one of those things, that if drinking and smoking were legal, people wouldn't do it as much, and as irresponsibly as they do now.
Look at Europe. Kids drink wine and beer from the time they are 12 or 13 years of age, and binge drinking, drunk driving, etc... are all lower there. People want what they can't have, even if what they can't have isn't that great to begin with.
So anyway, hopefully this 15 year old kid will move out of it during an earlier part of his life, and not screw himself up when he hits college and beyond. I personally have seen people smoke themselves into oblivion (one actually had a psychotic episode and failed out with a 1.2 and a.75 in a year). A little bit of freedom can be taken to extremes when people are deprived of that freedom for a long time.
Kind of like those hot Catholic chicks from the all-girls school. But that's not really a BAD starvation of freedom... ;)

People post things in an OPEN FORUM and then are offended when they get criticized. If you can't take the heat, then stay out of the fire. Nobody twisted deadzone's arm, making her say that she has a stoner boyfriend. Might I remind everybody that ALTHOUGH this is an offtopic forum, it's a game related site. Nobody makes anybody post ANYTHING that isn't game-related, so it begs the question of why we keep getting people's life stories here (Yes, i know it's offtopic, but still). If you're not comfortable with people judging you, then don't post anything that people will judge. It IS our right to judge you, but you also have the right to ignore it (or flame, whatever). word.
Honestly, I don't think the criticism is gonna get deadzone or her bf anywhere. If anything, it'll estrange her from these forums, leaving her with a newfound pessimism for the part of the community or something. I do admit it was a bad idea to mention it in the first place, but the direction it went wasn't good either. I also agree that they DO have a right to judge her, BUT shouldn't.

give the kid a break, he's 15.
No. I don't care how old he is. In fact, the fact that he is young makes me even less apt to give him any quarter on doing drugs for such a stupid reason.
people do stupid things.
So? Just because they do stupid things doesn't me I have to let them have free reign for thier stupidity.
sure drugs aren't GOOD for you, but i don't need people preaching to me about how drugs are bad and that my boyfriend should stop. ok??
Then don't post it into an open forum. You can post whatever you want.. but don't think people will leave it sit unopposed. I could care less if your genius boyfriend bakes every last braincell out of his fool head...
Stupid people aren't even worth reasoning with. My post was more of a piece of cautionary advice for the people with the good sense to listen.
we gotta live and learn ourselves,
While your bored boyfriend is at it, have him try out russian roulette, ritualistic genital mutilation, and maybe even blood-letting. Doing all of these things because your bored is no less stupid that using drugs "because you're bored".
the lecturing is not appreciated or needed.
The whining from you is expected, but not appreciated. Wow, your loser boyfriend uses drugs... I bet you do as well. I know, since you're so open with the information, lets just find you and your boyfriends parents email work addresses and email this thread to them. Heck, while were at it, lets just set up a distribution list to send it to all of thier coworkers, both of your relatives, and heck, everyone else on the same domains as them.
besides its him that does it because he's "bored". or at least thats what he told me.
This is why huge portions of this generation is doomed to failure. Well, at least darwin has some new chaff to keep proving him right.
don't flame me for it. i thought it was pretty stupid too, honestly but am i gonna say that? of course not because i love him. so there.
You are doing him no favors then. Love means you can say the harsh things, and effect change in those you love. More likely your just an enamoured little kid whose so worried what the other kiddies at school think that you scared to death of ever taking a stand for yourself.
i'm happy that SOME people aren't actually flaming me and standing up for me. jsweeney, you are simply a guy on a site. you can tell me what to do all that you like, but it makes no difference to me. calling my boyfriend a "loser" is not appreciated, AT ALL. you have NO right to judge him just based on one action that i said because you don't personally KNOW him. he's a good person, and perhaps i DO love him. its completely out of line for you to question his morality as a decent human being or not, and to question our love. in fact, with you doing so much flaming on ME, when I'm the one that doesn't even DO drugs (yes thank you very much, and no do NOT send emails to my parents or what not because yet again, you do not KNOW me, and do not assume things that are not true by things that might have led you on. also, just because you're obviously older then me doesn't mean so much wiser. i don't want him to exactly do the drugs, so lets just get off this topic, mkay? save the preaching for someone else because i'm not the one who even does them. exactly what that moeity i think said, just because you can judge someone on a forum doesn't mean you should, and you weren't being very nice let's just say, by personally bashing me. not to mention all the other people who assumed what you said was true and started to bash me as well. i made this forum to find out if there were any girls on this site, i didn't make this forum to find out how much an asshole Jsweeney was on preaching me on things he doesn't know about. I see you got better JS with the qouting heh heh. Wasn't deadzone the girl that was in love with her best friend's b/f and that he turned her down, but she was in love with him? So did you get together or uhm, you found love again?http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7414&postdays=0&postorder=asc&star t=0
Anyways, though we were all young, and heck I still am, I'm only 21, I did try a couple of things. I tried a cigarette, I coughed, it sucked, I never did it again. I smoked a black and mild, was stupid and inhaled it like a cig, and really coughed, and never did it again. I tried beer, it was crappy, I don't drink. I tried hard liquer, didn't quite take a liking to it, so I don't drink that either. I dipped during combat training, I didn't like the buzz, so I stopped. I never tried drugs, cause it's just plain stupid...but anyways, my point is, yes we try stupid stuff, but I learned to just quit.
I mean there is no future w/ drugs, I know it since I see what has happened to certain friends who would not listen (and I stepped in, and they didn't want to listen, but I did cause I cared). Now my friend realizes it now that he is just sitting in the Brig, it was a wake up call for him, but things do not need to go as far as prison for a wake up call. Step in if you love your b/f
Also, love can be found at any age, I fell in love when I was 15, and guess who happens to be my wife, the same person I fell in love with. So I'm not trying to bash on you deadzone, but if you love him, step in.
Also so I can at least say some stuff in topic: I know plenty of girl gamers, and most of them are cool as hell. In high school I hung out with them too and most of the games they were into were RPGs. Besides most girls that are into anime are into games, at least the RPG genre. I don't know why they say it's hard to find a girl that loves games, heck and to be honest these girls were definitely eye candy also. Smart too. Grrl gamers are just, well grrrreat ;)

i'm happy that SOME people aren't actually flaming me and standing up for me.
My guess is that they are in a similar situation as you. Bias often determines alliances.
jsweeney, you are simply a guy on a site. you can tell me what to do all that you like, but it makes no difference to me.
Yep, cause I log on to message boards every night expecting to change lives. I'm not so naive that I actually believe anything I say will change anything. Of course, the fact that your so wrapped up in your biases that you can't even see the value in what people say is troubling. Of course, that's a condition most teenagers seem to suffer from.
calling my boyfriend a "loser" is not appreciated, AT ALL.
I call a spade a spade. If your boyfriend wasn't such a loser (as dictated by his actions which you have presented on this board), I wouldn't feel the need to call him one.
you have NO right to judge him just based on one action that i said because you don't personally KNOW him.
I'm judging based on the actions and behaviors you've posted about him on this board. While I couldn't say that he's a complete waste, from what you've said about him (a person who would bais everything about him in a positive manner), I can safely determine my opinion that he is a loser.
he's a good person, and perhaps i DO love him.
It's kind of hard to determine someone is a good person if all you hear about him is his drug use, failure in school, and various other misteps.
its completely out of line for you to question his morality as a decent human being or not, and to question our love.
Open forum. I am therefore entitled to my opinons. You don't have to listen if you don't want to... but I have every right to state them, so long as I don't step over the lines of a terms of service, or any other boundaries set by moderators or the site's ownership and leadership.
in fact, with you doing so much flaming on ME, when I'm the one that doesn't even DO drugs
Notice, I started doing the bashing on him. You made it personal, so I proceeded as such and escalated. It's an entire fair tactic. If you don't want to bring yourself into things, you should talk about contraversial topics in a cold, almost clinical manner.
(yes thank you very much, and no do NOT send emails to my parents or what not because yet again, you do not KNOW me, and do not assume things that are not true by things that might have led you on.
One is judged by the company they keep. If you lie down with dogs, you wake up with fleas. It's a standard concept that one is judged by the groups they associate with. A close relationship such as boyfriend/girlfriend makes this implication ever more salient.
You've done nothing that makes me believe the contrary, yet established a decent prima facia case for the affirmative.
also, just because you're obviously older then me doesn't mean so much wiser. i don't want him to exactly do the drugs, so lets just get off this topic, mkay?
Notice, based upon my previous posts, this issue was dropped. It's fairly nonsensical to dredge up a post, make person attacks on another, and then say to just drop the entire issue.
save the preaching for someone else because i'm not the one who even does them.
How do you know if I even care what you do? Perhaps I am using you as a precausionary tale for other readers here. You obviously are so dead set in you ways... there are other that are more open minded.
exactly what that moeity i think said, just because you can judge someone on a forum doesn't mean you should, and you weren't being very nice let's just say, by personally bashing me.
Nor were you, nor are you in this very post. Hypocracy is fun isnt it?
not to mention all the other people who assumed what you said was true and started to bash me as well.
That is because I speak in generalities. Just because they may not be exactly correct in your situation, that doesn't make them false.
If you expect to consort with such people, you need to hear what most of them said anyway.
i made this forum to find out if there were any girls on this site, i didn't make this forum to find out how much an asshole Jsweeney was on preaching me on things he doesn't know about. So mmkay, thanks for all that. but it's not helping anyone, like metroidkiller said.
Folks
I'd like to sing a song about the American Dream
About me,
About you,
About the way our American hearts beat way down in the bottoms of our chests,
About that special feelting we get in the cockles of our hearts
Or maybe below the cockles,
Maybe in the sub cockle area,
Maybe in the liver,
Maybe in the kidneys,
Maybe even in the colon,
We don't know
I'm just a regular joe,
With a regular job.
I'm your average white,
Suburbanite slob.
I like football, and porno, and books about war.
I've got an average house,
With a nice hardwood floor.
My wife, and my job, my kids, and my car,
My feet on the table,
With a Cuban cigar.
But sometimes that just ain't enough,
To keep a man like me interested,
Oh no, no way, uh uhh.
No I gotta go out and have fun,
At someone elses expense,
Oh yeah, yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah,
I drive really slow,
In the ultra fast lane,
while people, behind me, are going insane.

You know what I'm gonna do?
I'm gonna get myself a 1967 Cadaliac Eldarado Convertable,
Hot Pink!
With whale skin hub caps,
An all leather cow interior,
And big brown baby seal eyes for headlights.
YEAH!
And I'm gonna drive around in that baby,
At 115 miles per hour,
Getting one mile per gallon,
Sucking down quarter pounder cheeseburgers from McDonalds in the old-fasioned non-biodegradable styrafoam containers.
And when I'm done sucking down those grease ball burgers,
I'm gonna wipe my mouth in the American flag,
And then I'm gonna toss the styrafoam containers right out the side,
And there ain't a God damn thing anybody can do about it,
You know why?
'Cause we got the bombs, that's why.
Two words, Nuclear Fucking Weapons OK.
Russia, Germany, Romania,
They can have all the democracy they want.
They can have a big democracy cake,
Walk right through the middle of Tienemen Square,
And it won't make a lick of difference,
Because we got the bombs OK!
John Wayne's not dead,
He's frozen.
And as soon as we find a cure for cancer, we're gonna thaw out the duke.
And he's gonna be pretty pissed off,
You know why?
Have you ever taken a cold shower?
Well multiply that by 15 million times,
That's how pissed off the duke's gonna be.
I'm gonna get the duke,
And John Desimeties,
And Lee Marvinhaugh
And Sam Beckinforth,
And a case of whiskey,
And drive down to Texas,
And,
(hey, Hey, You know you really are an asshole)
Why don't you shut up and sing the song pal,
You know the whole time I thought I was that asshole,
And it turns out it was him,
What an Asshole
I'm an asshole
(he's an asshole, what an asshole)
I'm an asshole
(he's the worlds biggest asshole)
A, SS, HO, LE

Sometimes, people need to hear things, even though they don't want to here it. I'm not about to sugar-coat or altogether hide the truth just because it may ruffle a few feathers. Notice, I don't do it all the time. Very infrequently, actually. The last time I had people calling for my head was during the whole walmart thing... which most people agreed with what I said, but didn't want to say it.
I don't care what people do with thier lives, so long as they are willing to take responsibility... someone using drugs "just out of boredom" sound's like a person who isn't willing to take responsibility for the negatives that accompany that action.

Returning to the topic.
I think gaming is in an awkward stage right now. Baby Boomers just don't get it. They don't get computers, they don't understand a great deal about this radically changing society.
Since they don't understand it, the first reaction is fear...
which is exactly why you hear all those "teenager" or "young adult" voices on the indentity theft commericals. It's easier to deal with something if you can scapegoat it.
Kids are getting more violent? It isn't bad parenting...it's not because they stay at work more hours a week than they need to so they can buy another overpriced car they can't afford, leaving thier kids alone the whole time...
it's videogames, music and movies.
I wouldn't be suprised to see the perception of gaming change in a couple years... most of the boomers are set to retire, and thier kids... the ones raised with computers and videogames, will step into power.
As soon as games become fashionable and not reviled, you'll see the now closeted female gamers step out into the public in droves.
Market demographics are already starting to show us this is the case...
Female gamers are the single largest group of online game player... it doesn't matter if it's simple flash games or persistant world MMORPGs...
women are obviously part of the market.
Games aren't the domain of the teenage boy anymore.
They wouldn't be so successful if they were.
Mark my words. Games like DDR are just showing the tip of the iceberg..
I'm willing to bet there are tons of closeted female gamers... ones that fought thier brothers over the controller to play Mario, Sonic, Crash or Spyro.
D4rkewolfe
03-05-2004, 06:45 PM
Speaking of fighting for the controller I definitely remember doing that with my cousin. Funny thing is when she was starting to learn to play Mario everytime he would jump over a pit she would raise the controller quickly as if by doing this the character would jump too.
It is true though, a lot of games are being seen more and more as what it is, a form of entertainment that isn't just for children. Look at some women celebrities coming out saying they are gamers, that'll help out with other female gamers come out too.

A short version of one of Sweeney's points: It's an open internet forum. If you don't want certain things discussed...don't post them publicly. Once you hit that submit button, anything you have to say is up for commentary or debate.

While you'll molly-codle him, some of us have no problem pointing out glaring character flaws and fault. He may not be a loser... but he's also not exactly in for a bright future. Of course, that's not to bad... the world always needs ditch-diggers. Hey, maybe even some time down the road someone will straigten him out and make him a productive citizen.
just don't make fun of me so much ok? unless of course you were aiming to bring down my self-esteem. plus quote to me exactly when I made this attack personal on YOU.
Hmm. I don't think I need too. There are very few situations where I can thing of asshole being a term of endearment. (well, except maybe some of the times my girlfriends said it, or when my parents call me one.)
ok so 11 female gamers. whoa, what a staggering number.
edit: can't we all just get along here? i'll try and be nice from now on, i'm sorry if what i said was hypocritical though i personally didn't think so as much, but i apologize. question is, do you? and besides, no one can be as big of an asshole as denis leary (who rules).
I can't apologize. If I was overly harsh, you bruised your feeling or ego, that was wrong. But you can't make an omlette without breaking a few eggs. Sometimes the ends justify the means.
Do I apoligize for what I said. No.
Do I apoligize if I hurt your feelings. Yes.
edit 2: we should really get sound clips on this site, because now i have the song stuck in my head ;)

I think there are also a lot of girl gamers who got away from gaming in high school and college, but who would go back to it if someone reintroduced it to them. I got away from gaming and missed the SNES and Genisis years, but thanks to my brother, I picked up a N64 when the price dropped. I was immediately rehooked, and have owned every system that's come out since then (except X-Box that is). My best friend was big into video games in the NES days, but then college, boyfriends, work, etc. edged them out. I know that I could get her back into gaming pretty easy if I lived a little closer to her. Maybe the girl gamers of days gone by just need a little reminder of how much fun games are.

Yeah, I can understand that.
I'm a bit wordy at times. Of course, most of my posts would be much shorter if I didn't qoute people all of the time.
That's why Wolfe asked if I was feeling ok when I didn't bother to qoute anyone in some of the posts early in this thread.
I could be wrong, but it just seems like good general practice to me. If you're going to post something that is contrary or agreeing with slight modifications, I find it easier of you directly qoute what you are responding to right before you respond to it.
I do try to walk a line though, where there is a point to each of my posts. There is a standard tactic in conversations\debates on message boards where you just keep glutting your detractors with text, basically not letting them get a word in edgewise... so that your important points sneak through unopposed while your detractors are still trying to dispute the trivial points you propose early in your glut of posts.

Man, that was really really long, I started at about page 5 and by page 6 or 7 i was just scrolling through seeing if there was anything besides the debate between JS and Deadzone....
On that subject, I personally have not done any drugs for illegal purposes, or drink.
I used to be very opinionated about how stoners are loosers etc... ***But now I feel that that's their choice***
However being having just turned 24 :( I feel so old, and having moved from college student to a job as a Network Admin, about every person that I knew that did drugs more than the "I'll just try it a few times" Are either dead, dropped out of HS/college, or in a low paying min wage job.
With all the "Truth" advertisments and stuff, people deep down inside know things are harmful to themselves, so if they are only hurting themself, then ill keep to myself unless its a really good friend/family member.
Just my opinion.

Man, 11? That's way too much. I know how we can weed them out, and shake the foundations of their DDR (by the way, wasn't that the acronym for East Germany when it was behind the Iron Curtain?) heritage... make them play Gitaroo Man in Master Mode. They'll never look at another music game again (since Gitaroo Man is so damn good), but at the same time, they will have an insanely hard time getting through the game. Wear down their will to play.
Frustration in large amounts.
Solves all the problems.
... back to Gitaroo Man...

Never, eh?
Well, this game has a Big-O that won't bring you enjoyment, only frustration and pain! [flanked by smaller, Little-O's that may or may not bring said frustration and pain... results are inconclusive, plus mental anguish of getting beat down by a Little-O rather than the Big-O is something that is hard to quantify, I'm sure]
If you can even get to challenge Big-O, failing to conquer it will leave you broken and alone, hating video games and then we're down to 10!

thats very tasty, if you like to make from scratch like i do you have to try bolognese. MmmMm i make it very often, heres a similiar receipe http://www.italianfoodforever.com/iff/news.asp?id=270 except i use way more cheese and olive oil. make it with 6 to 4 veal to beef ratio its much better. i can eat this almost every week.

Be careful with any chicken bolognese sauce recipies, if you go that route. I've tried a few that were fairly awful.
Bolognese is very different from a heavy cream sauce rims, I'm surprised that would be your next recommendation. If you can find a good recipe for it, a good next step would be a cognac cream sauce. Throw some freshly chopped chives in there. Very good. Very like Alfredo in texture, albeit without much in the way of cheese, which some people prefer on the heavy side in that sauce.

Wow that looks tasty! Cheese is good. I like cheese. I'm lazy, though, so I'll probably just go to an Olive Garden (http://olivegarden.com/) next time.

And whoever made that smell comment: 1) it's rude, and 2) it's not true.
thats pretty darn hot. its like hearing my coworker talk about her wireless-g and how she tried to hop on her neibors router. my g/f only likes playing animal crossing and mario sunshine, shes a mario freak, claims that he is "soooooo cute". but i give her props on getting all coins and shines. "no thanks to brady games" [^_*]
oh and about the legos, i had this deserted island set, and it came with a shark, then i painted the shark red and dropped it in the toliet. scared the heck out of my mom, now i think of it, she probably thought it was a tampon or i took a bloody dump or something... ... ...

From this day on she will never play a video game with me again.
similiar story here, if i dont let her win, she gets pretty ticked off. she also "commanded" me that i cant get more shines than her in mario sunshine. and i cant touch the money trees in Animal Crossing, even when i planted them, qoute "you can plant them, you should drop 10000 bells too, but once you plant them they are mine! wahahah" end qoute

I'm a female gamer, but someone already mentioned me eariler in the thread. And I don't smell bad. :P I do look like a complete nerd, though. (glasses, acne, don't like to wear makeup, etc.)
I remember seeing something on the Discovery Channel awhile back analyzing how genetics plays a role in why men lean more towards technical jobs then women
I'd be interested in reading about that. I'm a computer science major and it always struck me as weird that there are so few female comp sci majors. I don't see why men would be more likely to be into technology than women. (Then again, I don't understand why other fields of science are male-dominated, either.)
And if your name is a reference to your ethnicity, WildWop, you're not the only Italian-American here, either. :)
funny that subject should come up. I was playing MK:DD a while ago with a friend. He said something about me playing Mario/Luigi or Peach/Daisy, and I said something like "I have to choose between stereotypical women and stereotypical Italians? Either way I'm screwed!"
And while playing a fighting game a long time ago with the same friend: He was playing as a female character, I was playing a male. He won the match and smugly announced: "Ha!!! You were beat by a girl!" I had to explain the irony to him.

During my all too brief stint at an animation school, I thought it was surprising there were so few girls. In my class (you have the exact same classmates from beginning to graduation) there were 4 girls and 20 boys. 2 of the girls sat in a corner by themselves and never talked to anyone, and 1 was a snob that nobody could stand to be around, which left me with only guys to hang around. They were good guys though, so I didn't mind being the only girl. And they treated me like one of them, which was cool too. But I don't understand why so few girls are attracted to animation, it's a lot of fun.
