View Full Version : Question about DDR Ram and clock speed...

I have a Gateway 838GM machine running XP. It came with 512MB of DDR RAM, but it doesn't say if it is DDR-200 or anything. IIRC it goes up to DDR-400. My question is does it matter what speed you purchase? I'd like to upgrade but it won't do me any good to buy something that won't work.

It shouldn't matter what speed it is -- you should be able to throw that RAM in there and at worst, your computer will slow it down to the speed it wants. Just be sure you're getting DDR RAM and it should work.

Excellent. The last time I ever bought RAM was for my ME machine a LONG time ago and RAM is just seems more confusing now.

Download and run CPU-z. That'll generally tell you everything you need to know about your system, including current/max ram speed.

Or just use that free scan and it will tell you.
