Hey,

I've been offered a a 20GB PS3 for $300. I dunno if this a good deal or not. I trust that the system is in good working order and trust that the owner has treated it well. He upgraded it to 40GB and I have a 120GB SATA laptop hard drive from an old laptop that I plan to put in the PS3. I know the 20GB version doesn't have wifi, but an ethernet hook up will work fine for me. Anyways, what do you think about this deal? It comes with the system and everything needed to get it going. Does the 20GB PS3 have a history of issues?

Thanks,

Matt

I dont have a ps3 but if the 20gb has full backwards compatibility and you plan on putting a 120gb in there I say go for it but try and work him down to 250 or 275 first.

Yeah, that's a good deal. I've seen the 20GBs go for like $450 for a complete system.

Anything's better than a 40 GB. =)

But I don't want to be out $300 if this thing explodes or something. Are PS3's reliable (not compared to 360), but just in general. My PS2 is still going strong and I love the little strong thing. I would go for this deal in a heartbeat only if I knew it would last me. Since there is no receipt (friend got it as a gift), is it possible to still be covered by Sony? Parents bought it Dec/07 so it should still be covered.

PS2s and 360s are the ones with issues. (Look into the PS2s history. Lots of shit happened. I think I remember Sony losing a few lawsuits.) I hear very few problems involving PS3s other than user error.

Thanks for all the help. Is there any way I can get third party warranties for the system (such as best buy, which gives warranty for computers or radioshack)? Having a warranty for this thing is a pretty big concern since he got it as a gift. I'm going over to his house tomorrow to just test it out and try some stuff before I buy it.

I think the Sony Warranty is only 90 days (I have had a 60GB since launch). So I would be shocked if this was still covered under any warranty. On the off chance it is still covered, then your friend should have the extended warranty paperwork. As far as reliability i don't know anyone personally whom ever had any issue with the PS3.

I think this is a great deal to get the fully backward compatible PS3. The up-converted PS2 games do look nice running through HDMI. The only thing you are missing out on is the wifi and the memory card slots, which I think is a really minor thing.

The PS3 warranty is actually one year. If you don't have the receipt then they charge a hundred and fifty to repair it.

well, I suppose its a good deal. if the PS3 works fine for the months to come, then great!! but if it breaks down in the next 2 months or so, I can get it repaired if its not under sony's warranty. it would cost me 300 plus 150 for repair for a total of 450. a new one at Best Buy would be around $430 after taxes. so if you look at it, I'll break pretty much even. plus, this one is fully BC and once I get it, it'll have not a 20GB, but 120GB after I swap HD.

If anything, ask AngelicLulu, as I believe she had a wonky 20gb PS3 a while back. Also, if you plan on playing GTAIV on it, be careful, since I have heard of people having to send the systems into Sony for repair/replacement due to an issue with earlier model systems with the game.

for $45 more dollars. I could get a sealed brand new PS3 40GB. I already own a PS2 and like I said before, plan on upgrading to 120GB since I have one just laying around. what you think of this deal? which one is the better deal in your opinion?

Do you have an HDTV? The 20GB/60GB are only worth getting if you're going to upscale the games (which look awesome by the way).

took me a while, but I decided not to get the 20GB. I already have a PS2 sitting and collecting dust that I don't really use. I got a 40GB PS3 from walmart with that $100 gift card offer. Gave the gift card to a friend of mine who goes to walmart every weekend for groceries for $100 cash. So, I got a new 40GB PS3 for $300 with the sony manfuature's warranty.
