That's usually the way it is with mediocre licensed games. Fans of the material see past the flaws and enjoy the game, people who aren't big fans end up hating it.
There's more too it than that of course. i.e. some people really like mindless hack and slash games and can get more out of this than people who don't care for them etc.
But the license has a lot to do with it. If this was generic game and not Star Wars it would have sold like shit and not even had a thread here discussing it.

I noticed that, I would press for a force hold and he would just stand there or it would be just a little too slow. The targeting system really needed more work, should have fired the development team only after it was 100 percent done and gold.

That is definitely true in this case. I'm not a huge Star Wars fan, but I'm collecting all the Star Wars games from PS2, Xbox, GC, and 360 I can get. No duplicates of course, but the only I reason I got this game was because of that. I have enjoyed this game, but it was definitely something that I should have waited on. Luckily I had used my excessive store credit on this game so I didn't pay anything out of pocket on it.

Holy Fuck .. is the target lock on system annoying or what?! Here I am trying to do a the lightning on a boss and my character instead focuses on nearby objects than the enemy...and its almost impossible to lock on manually unless you wanna use all your fingers to jam Y + RB while moving the left and right stick! Pi$$ed the hell outta me when dealing with those large troll/beasts in level 4.

I'm not hating the game at all. Though it's really not a $60 a game... It's definitely got a high fun factor and a really neat story. I think this would have been better as probably a comic book or graphic novel though, or maybe release with something of the sort, just to fill in any gaps in the story that there might be.

I just completed the game today, and I've gotta say I was very satisfied. I wasn't expecting the best game ever, but it was definately fun. Also, the story was incredible! Lots of twists and turns, interesting characters, tons of action...it was one of my favorite stories in a game i've ever played. My only complaint is the short length of the game. Nonetheless, I'll be playing through it again over the next few days :bouncy:

Holy crap the Star Destroyer thing was a pain. They turned one of the highlights of the game into one of the biggest annoyances.
I really am enjoying the story, despite the "average" (Yes, average, Wombat) reviews.
Agreed 100 percent, i'm on that part right now and it isn't anywhere near fun, I would say whoever came up with this shitty idea needs to be fired but odds are they already were.
Edit: Just beat it and damn did the level design become a complete joke by the last few levels, going back where i've been before then going through a giant tube? All that time spent developing the engine and the best they could come up with were a bunch of levels where it isn't used anywhere near it's full potential ?! I mean damn I couldn't even break windows anymore, the environment became the same old same old stuff seen in a million other games. I loved the final boss fight though, I got the bad ending but it was worth it for that fight.

So here's my first real gripe with the game... It's seriously the same 3 levels over and over again. I seriously hate the jungle like planet and the junk planet. So fucking lame! But the starships are still fun. Something about busting out the windows just feels... right.

Well i just cleared the junk yard level. So far its pretty entertaining.
Cons.
- Right analog camera moves too slow.
- Seen some slight tearing in the screen.
- Lack of direction.....a few times i was confused on where to go.
- I hate the action button sequences when you have to finish off a boss
(it takes away from the game, you cant watch the endings, because you are too considerated on what button to hit next.)

I just beat it. Took me a little under 9 hours. This was one of those perfect rental games. And even though it's a side story the plot carries a lot of weight in the SW universe. I think the reviews were a bit too harsh. it's a 8/10 in my book.
The game was very glitchy. Here's a few I ran into:
- "Default Text" glitch, this is a bad one, this happens randomly, usually during the last part of the game. You know you have it when you view the the sub-missions menu and it says is "Default Text." in the top sub-mission slot. Sounds harmless but it nulls all your sub-missions including points & hologlyphs. You still get any items or attribute points you collect but it doesn't count towards the missions.
- A mini boss feel through the level and I couldn't beat him thus I couldn't progress, had to restart.
- At the end of the game in a boss fight he froze and stopped moving, The bad part is that I couldn't damage him. It sucks cause I almost beat him. I had to restart.

You can make the game even shorter by just force running past all the enemies. Don't worry, they won't follow you for very long and almost nothing holds you back from running the whole way. I finished it in around 5 hours or so doing this.

I had to read the Gamefaqs boards for this one, you know what the secret is? When you get to a certain point IGNORE THE FUCKING SCREEN DIRECTIONS, seriously they are flat out WRONG. Just keep going until you center it by eye using just the left stick, then tilt it up with the right until the nose is pointing right in the center. Then just pull it down. I got stuck on the same part and the on screen directions didn't make a lick of sense after awhile

I didnt have a problem with the Star Destroyer, although i was playing on easy. It just takes a few times to bring it down after getting rid of the tie fighters.
Overall it was a decent game. I cant say its worth buying. The story is okay, definitely not what i would want to see as a star wars movie. There were some problems with the game, like targeting barrels instead of a big dude right in my face, and how long he takes to get up after getting knocked down. Sometimes i couldnt get up fast enough and would end up getting shot more. The graphics are nice, but i have a headache after playing that, and the camera can be terrible at some points. But overall it was worth the rent.

Yes, this is VERY glitchy. I do like it and it's def not horrible..but I am finding myself more frustrated than enjoying it. I am getting frustrated over things that shouldn't be. If this game was a better smoother, and not so damn clunky..AND THE APPRENTICE WOULD GET UP FASTER AND STOP LAYING ON THE GROUND AS PEOPLE SHOOT HIM...It'd be a little bit more enjoyable.
What is the current trade in @ GS? It's probably $35, right? :-k
If I can beat it sometime today or tomorrow..maybe I can get it in with the current get $15 deal.

I agree about the clunkyness. It would have been better to slow down his jump, its way too fast. The camera is not very good. But most importantly is the combat is not great. Its no God of war. Plus the fact that you have these awesome powers, yet enemies have shields to block them. This game could have been great if the gameplay was spot on, but instead its just good.

When you defeat Vader the first time and the cinematic comes up with the Emperor using lightning on Kota you have a choice to jump down off the ledge where you can see Vader lying or continue walking left towards the Emperor to finish the light battle.
And yes, you can't use codes for achievements unless they are costume codes.

K thanks i didnt notice that. But i remember the camera angle looking odd. I tried to save later levels in their own slots, but the game dont allow that. So no easy "go back to last level and make other choice" for me. :(

The Star Destroyer/Tie Fighters were annoying, but it's got a few tricks. When I finally beat it it took me about 5 waves of tie fighters before I could bring it down. Once you figure out the sweet spots to grab the Tie's (Hint: the corners) then it should be a little easier. As soon as you see the indicator over the Tie quicky grab it. Also remember once you get the little green light to keep the Destroyer there for about 3 seconds then it'll promt you to pull it down.
Ahadi
09-19-2008, 07:33 PM
Jumping/Force Lightning and they TIE's are done in like 30 seconds to a minute. But it's like once I get the Destroyer where I want it, a new wave of TIE's joins the party. Frustrating as all hell.
coolsteel
09-19-2008, 07:39 PM
Keep at it, once you drag the Star Destroyer to a certain point it will remain there, so even if another wave of ties comes in the ship doesn't keep moving back. Personally I just used force lightning in the left hand or right hand corner and took out the majority of the ships , then went right back to positioning and pulling the SD down. It also helps to not be afraid to take a few hits from the tie fighters then do a force speed dash to cover right before you die.

I'm on the same fucking level as Ahadi. I've spent an hour trying to get that motherfucking star destroyer down. Whats the best way to deal with the wave of enemy aircrafts? Should I do lightning on the enemies or the containers that pass by?
I absolutely HATE it when games have stick wiggling mini-games, more so when its one miss and you start again. Hopefully its not as sensitive in this game or I'm gonna flip out.

Lightning by far, just go into the left or right corner, as they go by jump up and hit them. Once you get the hang of it you can take out almost all of them in the first pass.

To me, it felt completely manufactured and even though I was interested in the story, the whole thing felt like I was at a blockbuster movie which had been pieced together to appeal to everyone and ended up feeling completely flat. (http://www.8bithacks.com/2008/09/when-it-comes-t.html) IE: fuck this game.
...Naturally, they had all the boxes checked: a fleshed-out story that bridges the gap between Episodes III and IV, lots of involvement from Vader, over-the-top force powers that are usable frequently and to great effect, dramatic Jedi duels, and a story spanning the galaxy taking you through all the memorable locales of the movies. It feels like so much concern was put into making sure that the game "had everything" that they forgot to stop to think whether or not the game would be any fun.
Well, the answer is, after 15 minutes of endlessly throwing rebels around around, choking them with the force, and blasting them with the seemingly-uber-cool lightning bolts, the game felt played. When using the force is as easy as tapping a button and you are encouraged to use the force constantly throughout the game, it ends up feeling joyless as it just becomes "another video game power." The desire to make the game all about the force and take the force powers "over the top" is what becomes the game's undoing. In the best of the films, force powers were rarely used and significant when they were used. In Unleashed, even when you reach the fun lightsaber duels (the highlight of the game), the force no longer feels significant whatsoever and instead feels like another set of weapons to manage.

I've got it new/sealed for $45 and can't get any takers.
Wow, that's a shock. I've never had a problem selling anything less than a week old for 75% of MSRP. But I'm sure all the hate on this thread isn't helping it much either.
When I checked my "Current Objectives" it said "*DEFAULT TEXT* for my bonus objective, it also constantly had 0 force points..and even when I collected holocrons it said 0/15.????
I explained this glitch several posts back. It seems to effect people in the later part of the game. I got it too.

The endings were okay.
Dark ending was lame. And what looks to be the fake ending since Vader dies.
Light ending was good. But still felt a little too much like anakins story but reversed from being evil and turning to the light side. Im guessing this is the cannon ending since everything would have gone on as planned.
The story is alright. Maybe i just got confused but it seemed pointless for Vader to save this kid, then try to use him to kill darth sidious, only to lie about it and try to kill the apprentice. Did i miss something?

If you beat the game, do you still get the achievements? I was gonna playthrough the game again before sending it back, but I was just hit with Default Text on the last stage.
At this point I just want to finish up the game and send it back, but I'm curious if I'll get my nerd points.

You're right. You'll still get achievements for everything else. If you're renting it (like I did) the glitch shouldn't be a huge problem, but if you want to get 1000/1000 then you're screwed. I'm not even sure if the glitch has been officially addressed yet.
Didn't the production team at Lucus Arts get canned, and that's why this game turned out so glitchy and half-assed? Honestly the concept is great but it feels like they feel asleep half-way through production.

This is discussion about the story, only click it if you beat it:
The reason Vader used the apprentice was to start the Rebel Alliance (which was his destiny) and it wasn't to overthrow the Emperor. The reason the story is amazing is because we find out that it was really Vader who started the Rebel Alliance through his Apprentice because he knew there needed to be a way to defeat the Empire. Starkiller's destiny was to be that spark of hope people needed to feel inspired to fight the Empire. This is what made the story amazing...at least if you like Star Wars a lot like I do...
Yeah I got rid of my copy today. Took my local manager up on his offer to return the game for full credit. I used that to pay off my last two preorders.

Some money?! $25 at GS! [-(
For any of you that do Goozex, it's going for 900 points on there ($45 equivalent). Still low as most new release games go for 1000 points, but much more than the $25 at GS.
There's also only 1 ready for trade at the moment and 200 some requests so you'd be matched up with someone right away.

Beat it today..
The end guy/s (no spoilers) were the two easiest battles in the game =/
For those having trouble..
With Vader, when he goes to force push you (as he charges), dash behind him and wail away. He'll grip you. Hit the button to power out of it, hit him a few times, dash away, dash behind him when he charges a force push, rinse, repeat. Second part, just throw shit at him quickly. Third part, no real strategy, wail away..
With the Emperor, just hit him. If he goes to lift objects, run behind one of the little desks that have the battle plans above them. For the guards he calls in, blast them with a quick round of lightning (one quick shot) then wail away. Rinse and repeat. Insanely easy.

I second that. You definitely can't just wail away on the [second boss] on Hard... if you're in close for more than 2 or 3 swings you get rocked for about 1/3 health (I had fully upgraded health and damage mitigation...) and blown backwards. If you're really lucky, you might get blown backwards and into the force field for extra damage.
I was lucky alot...

You have to double jump, then dash, then hit B in mid dash. It propels you faster, its an ability you have to buy in one of the options. That's how you get both of them. Its tricky, if you fail in the pit one on IP immediately quit the game, it saves if you fall down..

If you wanted to get the Mastery achievements easily you could do it on the Prologue level with Vader by standing at the infinite spawn point for the Wookies (the bridge you have to cross when a tie fighter blows up the one you get ready to walk across). That's how I got all the ones Vader could get (all except Lightning and Lightning Shield).

It doesn't go across each save file, no. You can play the Vader prologue up until the part with the second bridge and the wookies will spawn endlessly. I've had them stop spawning before, but you can just save and reload the level and they'll spawn forever again. You'd only be able to do the achievements for the force powers that Vader has as well.

Activate it then kill people or what?Once you max it out, hold LT + Y until it drains your force meter is drained and lightning tendrils will spark out of your shield and hit enemies close by - only the tendril damage that results in a kill counts towards the 100 or 500, not lightsaber damage. To get the achievement, use it against regular stormtroopers and the like since they are weak.

More like "Which of these levels will people be willing to pay for? We'll cut those and leave the ones people really don't want in the game."
That's how I see it, anyways.

That's definitely the best plan I would say. Man, Lucasarts is just making me hate them more and more.

Hey guys, what is a "Aerial Ambush juggle combos"?
Thanks in advance.Go into your Force Upgrades and buy the grapple move (who's button config. is: Y + B) and then, when you use it on an enemy, it throws them up in the air leaving you to hit them (X + X) before they come back down. The hits in the air must be the thing that kills them, not the throw and not them landing on the ground.
Your other option would be to buy the Force Combo aptly named Aerial Ambush (and Aerial Strike, Aerial Slam, etc.) and hit the combo (X + X + X + hold B until you leap in the air after the enemy) and then slash them in midair (X + X). This way is a lot less reliable because you kill the enemy with the initial combo before popping him into the air more than 2/3 the time.

I am a huge Star Wars fan, but I was unable to finish this game. A huge disappointment. There are times where the force powers are awesome, but they are few and far between. The gameplay itself simply was more frustrating than it was fun. It is quite possibly one of the hardest games I've ever played on normal difficulty due to horrible targeting (the most critical part of the gameplay), invisible walls all over the place and random events that can take off 3/4 off your life. And I @%&#*$! hated the quick time events.
I've grinded out a lot of games I didn't care about, but I don't regret trading this sucker in despite the fact I wanted to love the game. I don't even care how the story ends. I'm even tempted to sell my Rogue Shadow Lego Set.

I hope they patch this game soon. I had some of the worst game glitches over the weekend. It made a great game a pain in the arse to play.
I once disappeared after getting hit by the Sarlac fighting Shaak Ti. Then I got stepped on by a Rancor and fell through the floor. Finally I had the famous *Default Text glitch which gives you no credit for picking up the Holocrons.
Who the hell tested this game? After all the hype I am truley disappointed. I refuse to play it again until they release some kind of patch. I really enjoyed most of the game but the glitches are unacceptable!

Since this game has been out of awhile...
Has to do with the rule of two. Siths always try to wait for the other to become weak before taking over. Vader couldn't take the Emperor on alone because he was too powerful (the man who single handlying maniplated an entire galaxy into going to war without anyone noticing until it was too late) so he needed the Apprentices help. It later becomes a double cross down the story leading to another fight with Vader.

I don't think Vader wanted his apprentice to kill the Emperor. He wanted the apprentice to run a fool's errand to expose the location of Bail Organa, Mon Mothma, etc. Then he could make it look to the Emperor like he did a great job crushing the rebellion before it even formed. Essentially the appentice was just a puppet in Vader's attempt to bolster the Emperor's trust in him, and allay any suspicions that Vader was trying to usurp his throne.
I'm on the last level, so if there are no major plot revelations that's what I gathered from the plot up to that point.

I suggest fighting Vader in the lower pit FIRST instead of going after the Emperor. You will get the cool bad ending, the acheviment and then get a chance to go back (reload the ending part) and fight the emperor for the good ending. Vader, even on easy mode is a real bitch when he is mega hurt.

I just recently read that they have finally patched the game with the release of the new character skins pack on the marketplace. I can not confirm this but I am going to pop on in after work and see.
The patch removed the default text glitch and should give you credit for any holocrons or objectives you completed when the game glitched.

I did, but I just started the game so not sure when I'll get to that point.

Start a new game, and then you can choose to do that level by itself. You'll be able to use your character with the stuff he already has put on his attributes. Since you have multiple save blocks you are good to go.

Glad to hear you guys had a good experience. I thought it was one of the biggest letdowns I've played in a long time. Note, I'm a HUGE SW fan. I wanted, nay, needed to love this one. But, the gameplay is just horrid. It's like the developers didn't learn anything since Super Mario 64. Just sad. The story was even on the weak side and that was the main reason I pushed through the shoddy gameplay.

ChubbyNinja is right, level design was downright atrocious .They built this stunning engine for the game but it was obvious they didn't know where to go from there outside of walk down corridor kill grunts in way. And just for good measure the game designers sabotaged their own game by having a ridiculous number of enemies that simply laugh off force powers and a star destroyer segment that caused many a person to throw their controller and quit in disgust. Want proof of that one just read earlier in this very thread.
I want to say the team could probably get it right on a sequel but hell they were all fired when the game was done outside of a few people to wrap it up.

I know there were a ton of complaints, but those of us playing it now, more than likely, picked it up a lot cheaper than most. It's easier to shrug off some of the problems when your buy-in point is closer to $20 than $60. At any entry point though, the Star Destroyer level sucked ass.
As for the design itself, it was kind of a mesh between Shadows of the Empire and Psi-ops, good or bad. I enjoyed the story well enough, and liked Sam Witwer in the role of the Apprentice.
Personally, I started on 'Sith Lord' difficulty which also extended the gameplay quite a bit. I imagine it's a pretty short game on the easier difficulties which could be viewed as a negative as well.

This is up next on my epic backlog. I am on level 3 (2nd level of apprentice) right now and am enjoying it so far. I like the cinematics and boss fights quite a bit. The gameplay is a bit... hmm.. not sure the word to use.. its not complicated or anything, but theres a lot to do and remember. Force powers arent too bad to use, and the physics are out of this world at times, i love how stuff just breaks and bends everywhere when using the force powers. That is easily the most impressive part of the game. The levels themselves also look really great, nice scale they went for and achieved. Im having fun so far and hope to clear it out of the backlog tomorrow.
And.. Just finished it! It was a lot longer then i imagined, i had heard it was a 6 hour game but its way longer then that! Anyhow, i enjoyed it a lot. What i liked a lot were the cutscenes, story, voice acting, music, controls were great once you get used to the force stuff and the graphics, at times, looked absolutely amazing, while looking just good other times. Overall i'd rate this a B. Once i finished it, i had no desire to ever play it again lol, so it gets points knocked off for that alone.
Good game tho, and i hope we get more using the same engine.

If you choose a new difficulty, then you have to find the holocrons again (or at least just the useful ones). Otherwise, you just pick chapters and the game functions the same (cutscenes are still intact, completing one level automatically loads up the next).

Just wait until you're facing either the second boss (Kazdan Paratus - hardest level IMO) or the Emporer on Sith Master difficulty, and you'll agree that the targeting system is broken. It's hard enough that you can die after 3 hits, but when you try to lightning the guy and it hits a totally inanimate object.. it just adds fuel to my dislike for the game overall.

What about those of us who haven't bought the game yet? Besides, who's to say that this won't release at a lower price? I wouldn't be surprised if this was like Mass Effect - a Platinum Hits title, but with extra content added.
If it's $20? They've got my money. If it's $50? Nope.
It'll probably be $29.99.

The game has sold more than enough copies for GH/PH status, so when they "re-release" it, it should come out at $30. Probably come in GH/PH packaging as well.

I'll still probably go for it at that price. I'm interested in the game but I've been low on money for the past few months, so I didn't bite at the $15 price. With any luck, I'll have some money coming in when the game is rereleased, and I might as well go for the complete package.
Re-read the press release. There is exclusive content on this new version. It screws everyone that already supported the game and made it a hit. All the other games you mention didn't do anything of the like.
Maybe you should reread the press release. ONE MISSION is exclusive to the Sith edition, and I can almost guarantee that the only reason it's there is to try and dissuade people from buying cheaper used copies of the first pressing. You're not being "screwed" - you're just overreacting.

It's pretty sad that instead of developing a sequel the publishers believe they can now just add a couple of levels and repackage an existing game as some kind of "special edition." It's all about them doing as little as possible to make as much money as they can. I hope most gamers won't support this kind of thing, because it only spells more and more situations like it down the road.

Funny. Seems like every sequel that comes out features everyone bitching about how sequels feel more like expansions to the original game. Now they complain when expansion packs get released instead of sequels. Go figure.

Seconded. This reeks of all the stupidity related to the Left 4 Dead sequel.

I do agree that this is kind of a cheap tactic, to make this one have some exclusive content. It's like the Colonies Edition of Lost Planet for the PC, it destroys the worth of the old copies of the game and penalizes people for supporting the game earlier.

I'd much rather have a sequel than an expansion pack if the only way to play some of the new content is to buy the otherwise exactly the same damn game all over again. Go figure.

I got my SWFU copy a month ago when TRU had that "Buy 1 new, get one 60% off" deal. I never opened it and I can still return it so I can get this.
That said, I hate this type of thing. I hate a lot of DLC in general. In fact, DLC is why I have become a CAG.

Finally it makes it way to the PC.. You know it's gonna be modded to hell so pay DLC can screw themselves.

I think that what annoys me and others is that we bought the game when it came out. We supported the game by buying the DLC. We want to play this exclusive level. I don't even care if it's a time-exclusive and is made available for purchase later on. It's just a cheap tactic to get obsessive SW fans, like me, to buy the same game again, though, and that's annoying.
