MGS4: CE or Standard? (No Spoilers)

I'm curious to see what the CAG community is dropping their money on.

Personally I will be getting the CE. Just because I feel like being a Hardcore MGS fan I have to. It's definitely steep in price, but I feel in the long run it will be worth it.

I separated the European CE from the US CE because I hear they are different price and come with different stuff.

And if anyone knows, does the game come in its own box in the CE Box?

At first I wanted the CE, however now that I know the art book is crap, and even the gamestop soundtrack is just a highlights disc, I'm just buying the standard edition.

I'll buy the soundtrack seperate, I'm sure there'll be an OST available soon after launch. I'll also just pickup the art book whenever it comes out.

I'll be picking up the collector's edition, mainly because of my unhealthy level of adoration for the series. It seems like the extras are not really "must have items" at this point, but I'll at least get a kick out of watching the making of documentaries and similar crap.

Plus I'll take the CE's amazing artwork over the blown up shot of Snake's Lady Tickler any day.

Blu Ray DVD w/Soundtrack. Soundtrack is only 16 tracks not the full 47 like the import one. Sucks, but oh well still a nice soundtrack with all the good tracks picked out. The DVD is advertised on the back to have over 2 hours of footage. Soundtrack is on the right (blu disc cover) while DVD is on the left with snake on it





That warning spoilers paper with the (!) you see in some of the pictures is to just warn you to play the game first before watching the DVD because it contains spoilers for MGS4.

The Limited Edition case for the game isn't metal or plastic but like a hard cover book material (similar to the Limited Edition guide). The actual game is NOT factory sealed and says NOT FOR RESALE only on the back where the UPC code should be.

Bottom line this game is a masterpiece, and Konami, and Hideo Kojima deserve your money so spend the extra $25 and get the Limited Edition. The art book you get is only 30 pages, and is kind of weak, but still nice. The Limited Edition guide is very nice, and is a hardcover.

Standard edition. I love Kojima's work but an extra 25 dollars for a highlight soundtrack and a blueray of extra stuff does not interest me. I will import the soundtrack and as for the extras, I loved Mass Effect but still have yet to watch the special bonuses from the limited edition.

I just got the regular edition. I got Metal Gear Saga Volume 1 back with a Subsistence preorder and Volume 2 with the MGS4 preorder. Figured the collector's edition didn't have anything much to offer. Certainly not for $25 extra. If it had the Digital Graphic Novel, I'd have bit. I want that but now it's out of print and everybody on eBay charges too much for what it is.

CE = LE, Vice versa. You get alot, but if there are tons and tons of copies, its better to get all that for a cheaper price later on. I was shocked seeing other stores get this so called LE too. Some People were thinking this was going to be Subsistence rare, hardly. Overall, Subsistence had very few PO in general, thus why the LE was so limited.

Go look at the MGS4 topics. People worked at GS saying some stores wont have enough. The UK LE cost a lot more than the USA LE, even if you factor in the weak US currency.

Collector's Edition is the only choice for me. I love the series a lot. Actually even pre-ordered two copies: one for play and one for the shelf. I'm not quite sure if the value of the MGS4 CE is going to go up at all or not, but even if it doesn't, having it sealed for the personal collection will be quite nice.

Just picked up the CE an hour ago. I kinda regret it since the "art book" looks like a POS brochure more than anything collectable (and the pages were jacked up in the corner... printer error I suppose). I haven't opened the package yet, but it looks like the case might not close flush (I could be wrong, still shrinkwrapped) and I'm assuming that the case insert is the same as the SE.. kind of disappointing since this was the first CE/LE I sprung the extra money for and probably the last.

My only consolation is that the game will kick so much ass that I won't mind dropping the extra money while I'm playing it.

Just picked up my LE preorder along with the LE guide (which I picked up from Best Buy).

Funny story. I walked into EB and found a smattering of people in front of the desk. I was ushered over by one of the two sales clerks and asked if I had preordered MGS4. I indicated yes and he began ringing me up. At that point, a guy walked into the store and joined the throng in front of the store. After about a minute, he began screaming at the top of his lungs that he was the first in the store and that they were thus obligated to sell "it" to him. The employee handling the situation had a used game in hand that he was just putting back into an envelope and apparently two guys were fighting over it.

I think the funniest thing the guy shouted was "You're just selling the game to him because he's your friend!" The clerk indicated that he'd never seen the other guy in his life and the angry kid started screaming that the clerk had very clearly said hello to the guy when he walked in, indicating that he must know him.

Angry dude also indicated that he was more mature than the other guy in line even though he was only 21, at which point the other fellow in line - who hadn't said a word, rolled his eyes, or even smirked, stated he was just 19.

Through the process, the angry guy left the store (with his friend still arguing for the game) and borrowed the phone at one of the cellphone kiosks. He called the police to report that he was at the store first and to have them send over an officer to force them to sell his friend the game. :roll:

As I was leaving, a security guard came in and had to get physical with the screaming guy and his buddy.

I have a question for people getting the LE - Are you taking off the protective plastic off of the art on the front of the box? I kind of want to take it off since there's bubbles and the like in it, but I'm concerned the art will rub off or scuff if I do take the plastic off due to shelf wear.

I got the LE and GS gave me the artbook at the time of purchase. I'm really happy with it because it wasn't just some crap cardboard box, it's actually a nice case that I can keep the two cases in. I like it a lot =) worth my money

yeah, I think that if you actually got the Metal Gear saga 2 dvd and the art brochure then the CE/LE is worth it. YOu could probably sell the game after you played it for 40-50 bucks and then re-buy it a year down the line for 10-30 bucks. MGS is notorious for high depreciation. You can get mgs 2 for 4 bucks at gamestop.

i said suck it wallet and went out and bought the PS3 MGS4 bundle. seriously when i woke up this morning i had no plans on buying a PS3 at least not of another year or so. but a buddy brought over his bundle he bought and hooked it up. Still can't believe that's the actual box cover. The Limited Edition slipcase cover is what it should have been. Rant over, swear I won't talk about how much I hate that cover again...until it shows up in the mail and burns my eyes again. Well, I go into gamestop often. And I don't really like seeing a HUGE chunk being taken out of my account, so it's nice just to put any cash I have at the time and add to it so it wouldn't be a huge shock.

And I had a preorder (which I didn't want) but they make me feel so damn bad canceling it so it took me like a month until I canceled. And when I did, you should have seen the looks on their faces. They seemed SO offended.

man, I 'm so pissed I missed Hideo Kojima's signing at Uniqlo in NYC. I live 3 blocks from there! I got up all early morning to get the CE from the most remote Gamestop in town with no hassle and I heard that the Uniqlo signing was pretty lowkey. If only I had known. DAMN!

That would be an interesting poll. I'd like to see that as well. My act preference order is 4, 2, 3, 5, 1 (based entirely on gameplay).
