I have a launch PSP and I never upgraded the FW, so it still has 1.50. I thought I would get into the homebrew scene, but I never ended up really doing much. In fact, I've barely played it in over a year. But, I just bought a PS3 and the remote play sounds pretty neat. I also want to play some of the new games like FF: Crisis Core.

Is there any reason to not update to the latest FW now? Are there any useful hacks or homebrew apps that would be worth giving up remote play for? Or maybe somehow to do both? How well does remote play work anyway? Would it be worth buying a slim and keeping the fatty original?

Thanks for your help.

Well, you could put a custom firmware on since you still have FW 1.50, this would allow you to run homebrew if you ever come across any that you want, but you'll also be able to use the newest features.

Of the new features...man, CHECK THIS OUT (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_Portable_System_Software) for all of the features you've been missing out on :D

Wow...still 1.5 after all this time. You should upgrade with custom firmware. Pretty easy since you have 1.5. There's lots of fun homebrew, and you can even play emulators.

Even if you don't have plans to do homebrew, or other "projects" at this time, you should still put CFW in it for the simple fact that its better than OFW and there may be something that piques your interest a few months down the road on the homebrew scene and putting CFW on anything over like 3.0 requires a pandora and mms, which while not expensive, they still cost money vs none at all right now.
