View Full Version : PS3 online security - WPS-SPK or WEP?

I've been reading about these two different types of security and also been reading that WEP really isn't secure anymore.
I'm trying to get my PS3 online wirelessly and wondering whether I should bother which one I should use.
Any suggestions?

I'm using wep. Although I don't in an area where people could acces my internet, plus my router barely reaches downstairs.

Well, it's just to the next room, but I live downtown. So I'm wondering whether I should risk it. Doesn't seem like alot of internet users around here though.

I can see a problem if your in an apartment building. With your router's firmware, can you see how many mac addresses are connected to your router? I'm using dd-wrt so I can always see if anyone is connect that shouldn't be.

I actually did a scan to see how many connections it could find, and it only found mine.
The PSP, when I've been scanning, has found a few but the signal strength has always been really weak.

So, I'd assume the people with routers are too far away from you. I'd just use whatever is easier for you to set up. The odds that someone can get your signal and know what to do with it are extremely low.

Alright, thanks for the help.

I use WEP but also filter access by MAC address. It seems to do the trick.

How do you filter, if you don't mind me asking.
I just set my wireless back up (had 4 wired connections and added a PS3 to the bedroom) and the access code is ridiculous.. for someone to crack that, they'd have to have a pretty good program and be patient. I did see an unsecure connection in my apartment building though (19 floors) and briefly connected. If I had a wireless card in my PC I'd be "borrowing" some download bandwidth. Just checked and it's WPA, whatever that means. If anyone knows how to filter by MAC address with the wrt54g, then by all means, please share :D

There's some sort of mac filtering on my firmware, but I never set it up. I think it just allows certain Mac addresses to connect the router. Since they never change, it may be more secure than a password, since only those computer can connect. IDK really, just assuming.

I was checking into my router's IP address and there were five categories
Model:
Serial Number:
Hardware Version:
Software Version:
Key Code:
Am I correct in assuming that I can use the Key-Code number if I decide I want to set my security up for WPA-SPK?

I have the Linksys WRT54g router. In order to filter by MAC address (just like it sounds, it allows only the registered MAC addresses to access it - conversely, you can tell it not to allow certain MAC addresses on), you would go through the following:
Open a browser and go to 192.168.1.1
Choose Wireless
Choose Wireless MAC Filter
Choose Enable
Choose Permit Only (or Prevent)
Click Edit MAC Filter List
Enter the MAC addresses into this form
Save changes and you're done

Will that account for things like a PSP and a PS3?

Will that account for things like a PSP and a PS3?You would have to type in the MAC address of every device that connects to your network, PSP and PS3 included.

How would you go about finding the MAC address for a PSP or PS3?
I have the one for my router printed right on the router itself.

WEP can be cracked in about 2 minutes. If some1 wants to get in, WEP cant stop them.
WPA2 is your best bet.

It's listed in your system settings info.

Actually, yeah, I think I remember seeing it for my PS3.
Thanks.

Yup, even using 128 bit encryption WEP is pretty weak. As long as you're not sending credit card info over your PS3 you should be fine, but if you're going to add funds to your wallet I would suggest doing it via the store.playstation.com on a hardwired connection or moving over to WPA2-AES.

Neither, no encryption with MAC filtering ID. Less taxing on the router.

I doubt there's that much traffic across the wireless to tax the router.
