Personally I can't wait to see this movie when it hits the screen this weekend. Jet Li is great but the director is awesome. He's made some great movies like Raise the Red Latern and Ju Duo.
This movie looks fantastic!

this is a great flick. if you have an asian video store in your area, you may be able to find the movie and not have to wait to see it. it is a very good film, beautifully directed.

Yeah this movie is pretty damn good, I watched the dvd sometime last year, I do recommend it. Though if you have seen the stylistic fighting of Crouching Tiger and didnt like that movie, this might not be up your alley.

I'll take that a step further and say you should run from this movie like a Republican from an all-male orgy. Or run from it with scissors in your hand.
I really enjoyed Hero, mostly from a stylistic and visual standpoint. God help you if you are in an "enhanced" viewing mode that likes bright colors. You'll have a seizure.
One point of warning. The trailers that they are running for this movie give you NO IDEA what the movie is about. It looks like Jet Li is a one-man army or something. Try to erase your expectations prior to seeing it and you'll likely enjoy it more.

My idiot friend who collects DVDs (and never watches them) bought this at ComicCon last year and its been sitting on his shelf, unwatched, since then. Maybe I should borrow it......
"It looks cool. Allthough i think its pretty lame that Tarantino did nothing with the picture but has his name on it."
"that's what he does, slaps his name all over someone else's work............. Iron Monkey!!!!! "
That's purely to get people into the theaters who might not otherwise go. Consider "Quentin Tarantino Presents:" to mean "Quentin Tarantino really liked this movie and thinks you should go see it, even though he's not making a red cent off from it."

OMG miramax took forever to bring this movie the US... I just said forget it and watched the dvd.
I liked this movie a lot more than CTHD, so I might want to watch it in theaters again, and I recommend this movie to people who have not seen it yet.

I have had this movie for over 6months now, its really good but it is prob goin to be butchered in the dubbing, though I might be wrong and it will be subtitled. Like someone else said the trailer makes the movie something its not. People need to give Tarintino a break, he pushed for the movie to be released, it might still be on shelves if it wasnt for him.

I don't think it will be dubbed, well at least I hope it isn't. Crouching Tiger wasn't dubbed, so I thought Hero was going to take the same route.

It got a limited release last year. Sadly, not enough people even knew about that.
I think it's a great flick, partially for its visual sense, partially for some unique storytelling. Hopefully with Tranantino helping to release it, Miramax will minimize the amount of dumb edits.

yeah, I remember reading the IGN dvd review when it came out a while ago. I kinda have an idea on how the movie is broken into parts ans such so I know the trailers are making it seem like some type of rambo flick. I could have gotten a bootleg of the movie like 100 times but I put it off in hopes that it would one day be a US release and I'm glad that time has finally come. And I'm glad they are adding Tarintino's name to the flick, it'll get more asses in the seats.

I'm going to see it, even though by what I hear, I'm almost detered not to go. It sounds quite good, very much in the shadow of CTHD. I hope their are a lot of action. Howis the movie and an action scale 1-10, with 1 being very little and 10 being non-stop, ala Terminator.

08-23-2004, 05:23 PM
An IGN interview with Jet Li says this will be the same movie that was in Asian movie theaters, just with subtitles.
As far as being in the shadow of CTHD, it's inevitable because CTHD came out first. I ron Monkey is also in it's shadow, and I personally feel it's a much better movie. I'm toootally pumped for Hero. DONNIE YEN IS IN IT!!!

Yaeh, I totally prefer Iron Monkey to CTHD. Iron Monkey IMO is a much better film told mcuh better, because in CTHd, it felt like at some parts it was dragging a little, where as Iron Monkey I never felt that.

Somewhat on topic, anyone else get pissed when people try and tell you martial arts films have "no story"? In the better ones such as Iron Monkey or Legend of Drunken Master, they tell a better story with their fighting than 75% of movies that come out tell. This, incidentally is the same reason I watch wrestling. The really good wrestlers tell an amzing story in the ring. But, tell an average schlub you like martial arts movies and wrestling, and they look at you like a hick.

Saw it last week, it's just awesome.
Great look, great music, and a great story! At first it just looks like another martial arts film, but as it goes along you see that's so much more. A real work of art.
As for MR.QT. The thing is he didn't have anything to do with it-- just bought the US Distribution rights and slapped his name on it-- but without him Miramax may not have released it. QT has a way at Miramax.
Also just a FYI: not only did they sit on it for 2 years but Miramax also cut it down by 1/2 an hour.

As far as I'm concerned, if Quentin Tarantino is going to be the lone crusader for bringing great martial arts movies to the U.S., good for him.
Spelling edit.

This is a TERRIBLE movie. Watched it last year. The story was stupid, the ending was stupid. This movie is the sequel to Butterfly and Sword which was released around '93. If you watched that, you would know what the story is about, but that one wasn't bad.
Worse Jet Li movie i've ever seen. Just because Jet Li is in it doesn't mean its good. This movie will get a bad rating.

well i have seen it. i own the dvd and have seen it repeatedly. this movie is jaw-droppingly gorgeous. there were so many moments in the movie where i was just floored by what i was seeing. it is better than cthd, and i really liked cthd. it has become one of my favorite movies, but you really have to like asian cinema to appreciate it. and you have to be halfway intelligent, otherwise it'll pass you by.

I have the movie on dvd. Chances are that it's going to be subtitled in the theaters and not dubbed. It's is very much like Crouching Tiger. When there's action it's really nice to look at and well directed but then the story just makes no sense towards the end. I stopped paying attention to the story probably around 3/4th into it. If you like martial arts movies then this is a definite. I got my dvd on ebay for like 7 bucks. It may be a copy but it has a case and the disc isin't blank or anything like that and it worked on my xbox so I'm satisified.

I saw Hero when it first came out. I had high hopes for it but it disappointing.
I still recommend it because the action scenes are pretty damn good.
What im waiting for is House of Flying Daggers which was directed by the same guy - Zhang Yimou.

This is the dumbest thing i've heard. You think I don't like asian cinema? Let me tell you something, i AM asian, and watch alot of asian movies, especially the TVB Series. I was watching Hero with my nephew(who bought it) and even he said the movie was stupid. And just because I don't like the movie doesn't mean i'm not intelligent.
I wasn't really impressed with the action scenes, i prefer iron monkey's action over this movie.

It's not dubbed. And while I don't follow Maxim's movies scores, their video game reviewing leaves something to be desired. I'm not sure, but they may be the only publication that gave Sudeki a perfect score.

Ive had it the Region 2 dvd for awhile. Good movie, glad to see Tarantino is helping release this one in the states. But I hate how they make it look like Tarantino made the movie in the trailer.

already seen it a year ago. it's alright. idk, seems like this is gonna be another crouching tiger, (a movie that wasn't really good but wowed everybody because americans have never seen wu xia action films before).
I concur with magilacudy, this movie is very artistic and beautiful to watch. It should probably win the oscar for best cinematography already, but the story isn't all that. It's Rashomon-ish.

I saw it on DVD last year and it is a great film. It does not have the depth of character development found in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, but it does have style by the hands full, and the women of the film are drop-dead gorgeous.
It is unlikley that a dubbed release will be seen on the big screen -- I have a feeling it will get treated similar to CTHD.
Flying Daggers, also by the same director, will see distribution this winter by SOny Picture Classics (the same people who handled CTHD) -- it was well received at Cannes, and is supposed to be quite spectacular.
