So with my car insurance, my insurance agency is throwing in renter's insurance free, up to $15,000. Now, this is great due to my extensive game collection.

If it came down to a fire, theft, etc, how could I prove I owned such items at value?

Take pictures. Lots and lots of pictures with your digital or disposable camera of each individual item. I'd focus on the important things mainly. It's exactly how you would treat a car accident. That's all the proof the insurance company needs. You could also buy one of those engravers so that if the items are stolen, you'd be paid, but you'd also have the chance of getting it back in case the bandit is stupid enough to sell it either online or at a pawn shop.

Keep an excel sheet listing each game and approximate value in addition to the above suggestion.

Also just in case it matters, renter's insurance doesn't include floods. If you're on the bottom floor it's something to consider.

Keep your pictures, serial numbers, and whatever else on a flash drive NOT in the place you live. Give it to a family member or friend.

It won't do you a lick of good if you catalog everything and then the proof burns down too.
