View Full Version : Can't play ICO - screen is "torn" halfway

Tried googling around for an answer to this, and even checked on here, but didn't find any definitive answers.

Tried to play ICO tonight, but I'm seeing something I've never seen before. Basically, the lower half of my TV simply won't display any part of the game. There's a white line running horizontal, and then below that some snow, and then it's just black.

TV is less than a year old - a Vizio 32". Using component cables going from the PS2 directly into the set. SCHP-39001.

Never had any other issues with this system on any game. I treat it quite gingerly - never dropped it or spilled anything on it.

The ICO disk is dark blue - my understanding is that this could be a laser reading issue since this should be a CD instead of a DVD?

If anyone can give me any info, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Likewise, maybe I should just go grab a slim PS2. Mmmm.

dark blue bottom of disk?
Also, this the first time playing ICO?

Have you tried other CD games?

Yeah. Yeah.

Have you tried other CD games?

I wouldn't know if I have or haven't - I don't pay attention to the bottom of the disc. However, I know of the issues with the system, which is why I made specific note of it.

Mostly I'm trying to figure out if this is what is considered a "common" problem with some of the phat systems. If it is, then it won't bother me too much, since most of the games I want to play are later generation DVD anyway. But I would really like to play ICO - trying to clear out my backlog as best I can.

I guess I'll have to hunt for another CD game in my inventory and see if it happens on that one too.

So, would a slim PS2 fix this?

Other than the video, does the game play and load normally? What about the sound? If it's just the video, I would think that it's a problem with the connection or the TV doesn't like the signal for some reason.

Everything else seems fine - sound, whatever. I could press start or whatever and get the game to load. The cord and connection are fine since they work flawlessly with any other game.

I checked the system settings and switching it from 4:3 to 16:9 didn't change anything. It already knows its using component.

My set has two component inputs, and up until a few weeks ago, the one my PS2 is using was being used by my Wii, and it never had issues either.

I'll have to try out some more of these blue-backed games and see if they do the same thing.

My copy of ICO has worked fine on three PS2 systems - 2 fatties and a slim - and my PS3.

Do you access to another PS2 that you can try it on - mayhaps at a friend's house?

I just popped ICO into my old PS2 today. No problems on my 40" Sammy (via composite), though the jaggies were dreadful.

Why dont you try it on that tube TV you've got sitting next to it.

Also, try the old composite cables to the fancy TV.

Apply some scientific method to that bitch!

I swear I think I've heard of this happening to someone once but I dont remember where.

I'm a busy man. Don't want to waste time hooking it up to your dream tv. :]

I might try the composites, maybe try hooking the system up elsewhere.

Thelonepig - Nope, no other PS2s to try it on, nor friends with PS2s that are close by.

No big deal for the time being - I'll fool around with it. Have to keep grinding through Persona 3 anyway.

I'd assume the game wasn't meant for the resolution you're trying to play it at. Sounds weird, but I don't really see how the type of media it's on would affect the picture if sound works fine.

Small update:

I'm thinking the problem is CD based games. I got the MGS Essentials and tried to play through MGS1, but it does the exact same thing. And since Konami isn't smart and didn't put them on a DVD (or let me use a PS2 memory card), I guess I can't play it either.

No big deal. I'll go grab a slim PS2 somehow, since I'm guessing that's the issue. I'll screw around with resolutions and stuff.

Thanks for the input, I appreciate it!

Actually I sort of have the same problem. I have my 39001 ps2 hooked up by component to my 32 inch Vizio which I bought last December. Although I haven't tried ICO, I do know that my ps1 games are not displaying right. Kind of like the same problem you described. But I did try Marvel vs Capcom 2 and Winback (blue bottom cd games) and they were displaying properly. So I am not sure if it is the TV or what.

Don't have one yet, mostly because Dell wouldn't honor that price glitch. The jerks.

One needs to be in place by the time LBP drops. That much is required.

And I'll happily try them on there once the time comes. I was kind of hoping more people would be willing to trade one on here. :p

Sorry, I thought you had one because you had a PSN name.

Both ICO and the MGS games run at 240p when played on the PS2 via component. Some TVs do not support 240p. Unfortunately, the only way I know of to get around this is to use either the composite or s-video cables from your PS2. By default, the PS2 outputs 240p via component with no known method to force 480i.

PS1 games on the PS2 are the same way. They all output at 240p, except for a very select few. Tekken 3 is one that I am aware of. PS2 games are the opposite. Almost all output at 480i/480p except a select few, such as Ico.

This problem is not specific to any revision of the PS2 hardware. It will happen on every model, AFAIK. I haven't personally tried the 7xxxx series (the ones with the remade single-chip emotion engine), but it's possible this behavior was changed.

To sum it up...
Problem: Messed up video when using component cables on the PS2 and playing PS1 games or Ico.
Cause: Your TV.
Fix: Use composite or s-video cables instead of component. Or buy a new TV.

For what it's worth, playing these games on the PS3 should fix your problem.
