Today, Sony Computer Entertainment exec Kaz Hirai announced "Life with PlayStation" for the PS3. During the presentation, the "Life" was demoed for the audience for the first time — the service shows the Earth, and users can access current news and weather for locations around the world. It's possible to even pull up the full article from the headline. Users can also set background music while looking at the Earth, checking the weather and the world news. Click through pics below to see it in action.

Pretty much a combination of the weather and news channels on the Wii.

I still don't understand why they(companies) feel that they have to make every device be multi-functional. People that want news or weather will get it on the internet or tv. People don't get on their playstation to get the news or weather.

I don't complain about much regarding the PS3. But why waste any development time/money on something like this?

Awesome upgrades between this and 2.4. In hindsight, it seems that the customers were shafted in 2007 as Sony placed priority on getting Blu-Ray over (sucessfully), but 2008 has brought us some AAA titles, user focused implementations, and given us software features on par with both the 360 and Wii. I'd have to say that the wait has been worth it and the only thing I can hope for in the future from Sony is BC for my 40gb.

I'm definitely going to use this, can't wait. I know it takes good used to, but if you have a device that is multifunctional, there's no crime in using it. I don't think its a bad thing to have it either.

I'm not going to complain about extra features but I've used the Wii to check on the weather and news only once or twice and I can't see myself ever using those features again. It's way easier to just check on the computer... lets work on getting the MSRP to $250 or so...

They will most likely hold their price to gain money back, even if it cuts back on marketshare.

Anyway, I liked the Weather channel on Wii, but hated living my Wii on WiiConnect24 (since my Wii got warm). Hopefully it stays on while I'm on the XMB, so I can access quickly.

Mana Knight, Is that on just the PS3, or does that factor in the money they dumped into bluray technology?

Mana Knight, Is that on just the PS3, or does that factor in the money they dumped into bluray technology?

you know.. damn, Sony makes it seem like they're losing money, but they can't be losing too much because, they're receiving profits from two markets as a direct result of the PS3. [Blu ray movies, and players, and Games] Blu ray technology has to be factored in, however they only mention losses from the games market; the question is how much have they gained in their HD movies and players market. Plus how much do they stand to gain in the future from this video game blu ray investigation.

Overall they may have profitted as a company, but Howard Stringer himself has limited funds the PlayStation brand gets due to going over budget, and badly wants them to break even (PlayStation use to rake in all the profits for Sony while their other divisions lost money). They'll keep PS3 going, no doubt about it, but they are trying to get money back (They still take a small loss on the 40GB, while any other SKU had at least $100 loss or more).

I could care less about this... The PS3 needs to work on a RSS feature. Then I will have all the news I actually care about.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/08/29/life-with-playstation-is-on-its-way/

I’ve got some good news and some okay news. We’ll start with the okay part. We’re still pushing some paperwork on Life with PlayStation — so hold tight just a bit longer. Now on to the good news, the Life with PlayStation application is looking great and to quench some of the curiosity around what it’s all about, here’s what I can share today.

We’re going to offer this as a free service that will be easily accessible directly from the XMB. Life with PlayStation will feed live content to your PS3 with updates on news and weather on a visually stunning and interactive global map. Imagine being able to wake up to your PS3 to see if you need to pack an umbrella for the day. Or just relax as you listen to your favorite tunes while reading up on top news from around the world.

We’re also very excited to share that Life with PlayStation will be combined with our Folding@home project (http://blog.us.playstation.com/tag/foldinghome/). What does this mean? While you’re tuned into Life with PlayStation, you’ll also be helping Stanford researchers (http://folding.stanford.edu/) cure diseases like Alzheimer’s and various types of cancer while Folding@home is running in the background. We know you’re eager to check it out for your
Some interesting news from Sony while they continue working on getting Life with PlayStation out of the door.

On the PS Blog, Jeff Rubenstein said more details on LWP soon, and it will not be a firmware update or an item in the store. That pretty much means Folding@Home will be updated.

That makes sense. I think combining the two is such a great idea personally. Though I don't Fold any more... I might try this out.

According to this and the comments left there (http://www.n4g.com/ps3/News-200321.aspx), the new update activates this. You just get that then load up Folding@Home and it will prompt an update if I am reading this right.

Well, not sure what to say about this. Sony only includes news and weather for a small number of cities around the globe, none of which is within 300 miles of my residence.

You can't zoom in on the browser text when reading an article, view a city's webcam in full screen, or get weather forecasts. (At least, I can't figure out how to do these things.)

Honestly, I think the Wii's globe/news/weather functions are considerably more robust and useful.

But, I can listen to my music while I waste my time. :)

I was really hoping I could expand the webcams. Couldnt figure it out, so I guess it is not an option. Still pretty useful, although I was hoping for Detroit on there.

Oh yeah, I forgot to see if it works in-game. Someone check it out.

I definitely look forward to updates to add some necessary feature to this thing. I don't know who had the bright idea to not have an exit option on the menu, forcing you to use the PS button to exit.

I like that the controller rumbles when you zoom all the way in like you've run into the Earth.

Agreed. This is the red-headed stepchild of the Wii version. Less news stories, hard to read them with no zoom-in function(I've got 20/20), weather for maybe 15 cities in the US. I guess it is expandable through updates, but as of now it's really not worth getting unless you must have music playing while you look at the HD globe. Color me unimpressed.

How did they release this without having the ability to at least put in a home location that could at least show the current temp.

Also, it is annoying that they took out the "circle" button to exit.

I like the app so far, however, there are some issues that I have. First of all, when you click on one of the news links it brings up the broser so you can read the article. Problem is that you can't zoom in on the article so you can actually read it. Even when you want to use the "more news" option, it brings you to a page where you there are other news stories, but you can't zoom in to them to even see what they are.

This seems like it was launched with the intentions of forever updates and patches. At first I was asking myself 'where the f*** did Folding@HOME go?!??!' but I read about it online that it's still there. The cities, well the ones they have, are way too few and the news ticker isn't really the best as described, clicking on it you only see small text. I wished there was a lot more done to it then what was released, shoot I'ld take more cities and the option to zoom in on the news at launch for starters!! It's almost comedic to a point at this stage... and that's the non-koolaid version
