"My Apocalypse"

"Cyanide" Live at Ozzfest '08
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKBy8--Y1Nc
Personally, I really like the first two, but I don't really care for Cyanide.
Altogether, I'm very excited for the album.
I'll put links to the new singles as they come.

That was my first thought. After wasting $15 on that stupid album,
and then listening to it in its entirety,
I felt that the only direction these guys could go was up.

I felt that too. If you would have played just the audio to me,
i would have guessed it was their lead singer playing live with a cold or something.

It's been confirmed that song isn't going to be on the album.
Oh and if you watch the Bonnaroo performance, they sound pretty tight with the old stuff. James doesn't sound too bad and they're still capable of kicking ass. I still have some hope.
Regardless, I'll be writing a review of it for my college paper. I have to listen to it lol.

Anyways, I'm sure Metallica knows that this album is their make or break release. Somewhat explains the release of Bob Rock and the arrival of Rick Rubin to take his place.
Oh and Nostradamus is fucking wretched.

Definitely makes me want to see them live again,

This new song has enough oozin ahh's and wailin' woahs to make you think so. It really does sound like the Offspring, or maybe even a really hard Bad Religion.
It's better than anything they've done in a long, long time, so I might slightly care.

They just need to stop fucking playing. The only thing that could save them is if every member quit, got new members, and changed their name to Municipal Waste or something.
Black album and back...Top notch fucking music...Load and Re-Load...while Id like to make fun of those 2, they grew on my and are tolerable.
For the most part, alot of bands tend to go to shit when they get clean and sober up. Not knocking the effort, just saying.
James isnt angry anymore and thats what fueld Metallica's music.
Also...not that it really has to be posted here BUT its Metallica related.....
Awhile back, Slash was on Howard Stern's show. He mentioned a time when he walked into a hotel room and found James Hetfield throat f'n some chick and what made it funny was, if you listen to Metallica, you know the sound makes when James goes "ooh, yeah" etc etc...well thats what he was saying, in the same tone, while ramming his rod in the chicks mouth.

Wow that blows. I was really looking forward to the new Priest. I thought their last one sucked.
Seeing as how soloing is now popular again in mainstream bands I'm not surprised they're putting them back on. I kind of want to hear what Trujilo (sp? fuck) sounds like. I can hope for a RTL but that won't ever happen.

Creeping Death is an awesome song.
I have to admit, Lars was a real asshole when he launched the crusade against napster.
I gotta say...can you blame the guy?
Did he blow it out of proportion? Most likely yeah...but the man had a point.
He could have pointed the finger at others within the recording industry, he just went after the easiest target.
The problem I had is that when they were up and comming, they were giving their music away so why bitch now?

Because they figured out they make a lot more money selling records, rather than give them away. But i will admit that if i were in the same position, i would have done the same thing, if not taken it further.

Thought I'd bump this up. We now have a track listing of the new album.
That Was Just Your Life
End of the Line
Broken, Beat & Scarred
Day That Never Comes
All Nightmare Long
Cyanide
Unforgiven III
Judas Kiss
Suicide & Redemption
My Apocalypse
Most people are saying that "Unforgiven III" is just them running out of ideas, but I'm looking forward to it. I mean, the first two kicked ass. If they even come close to the first two, the song will be an instant hit.
Anyway, I liked 'The Day That Never Comes', but 'My Apocalypse' sucked.
Also, word has it that the album has been leaked. But all reliable sources have had the material taken down. Makes me think that it might be the real thing. I have a friend who's going to try to send me the link later, I'll let you know if it's real or not. *Crosses fingers*

So far, I've only heard "The Day that Never Comes" and it's okay. Though I'm just not digging that half the song is instrumental. At least it's not as bad as that one Dragonforce song where 3/4 of the song is instrumental and half the time I feel like singing the lyrics to their other song, "Through the Fire and the Flames".
From just this song, I would say it's not their best. But yeah, I'd like to give the other tracks a sample, then I could get a better idea.
I'm still digging their older stuff, but that's pretty much it. I don't expect these songs to stay playing on the radio for a very long time.

Zzzzz... thanks for the vids tho, OP. I'll keep my Master of Puppets ~ Reload Metallica, thanks.
Their best work IMO was ... And Justice for All. And Load/Reload are awesome if you can accept that they were trying to experiment/age with grace. Man, did that ever take a 180' *pukes
I WILL say this sounds a lot closer to their earlier sound then that... St. Anger... THING. And I never liked Kill em All, or Ride the Lightning (For Whom the Bell Tolls being the exception on Lightnin'). So makes sense I'm gagging on this stuff.

I found it hard to get into at first and even to this day, a good portion of that album still bugs me.
The Four Horsemen is on the long/slow side but at times is quite enjoyable, Jump In The Fire is bland, Anesthesia is pretty uninteresting until the drumming comes in, No Remorse is decent and I'm sorry, but Seek & Destroy is flat out annoying and overrated.

Hmm, yeah, JH's vocals aren't as nice to listen to for me. And that "hhaughh!" sound he makes after every stanza starts to get on my nerves. And that higher pitched yelling voice doesn't do it for me either. Oh well, at least he didn't go lame on everyone like how Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots did probably trying to reinvent himself.

So I've checked this new album out and it's not bad. I can't decide what I think about it overall but it's not horrible. I'm still not a fan of the way James' voice has been the past several albums. It sucks the life out of the music now that he tries to sing. The music is probably the best since the black album though. It will take a few listens before I know how I really feel but I'm not slamming the door shut on it like I did everything after the black album.

Heard the new album, its a good hard rock album. Its better than St. Anger, Load and Reload, but not better than anything else. I hate James' vocals. The drums are too high in the mix and sound like shit, why couldn't Lars be the one to get crushed by the tour bus? Kirk can still solo which is a great thing. Ride The Lightning is better as a total album, Puppets has some weak songs but only 1 or 2. Metallica truly does suck now when you consider how solid their older albums were. It's getting to be increasingly rare that a band puts out an album good from start to finish, let along 3 of them in a row (starting with Kill 'Em All, of course).

And in one picture, we have everything that is wrong with Metallica. They've lost the hunger and anger that fueled their music.

I know Ive said it on here before in regards to Metallica....alot of bands that come out swinging and kicking ass tend to "fall off" when they sober up....
But youre right...James isnt angry anymore.

wow, thanks for the video comparison. That's just damn pathetic how the GH version sounds much better than the retail.
I finally got around to hearing one of the songs on the radio today and I agree...the drums drown everything out just like they did on St. Anger.
They definately need to scale them shits back a bit.

I've heard most of it and I'm with the consensus... it's a lot better than anything they've made in 20 years. I didn't know they still had it in them.

My thoughts:
- The mastering/mixing is pretty godawful. It's more distorted and compressed than even the average modern metal album, which is pretty fucking awful.
- Death Magnetic is definitely a grower.
- I think your enjoyment of it will be based on how much the idea of an "AJFA structure with some Load elements" album excites you. I like the fact that they didn't totally go for MOP Pt. 2, but instead made an album that has elements from multiple phases of their career. The elements that are from Load are much better than what was on Load, and emphasize the good parts of those records (the groovy, vaguely Sabbathy riffs).
- It's their 5th best album, easily, but maybe 6th if you create some sort of mix of the best songs between Load and Reload. Maybe
- Unforgiven III is easily the worst track on the album, and Judas Kiss isn't that great, either.
- Lars's drumming is absolutely dreadful.
- This is better than the last album by the following bands:
Testament
Exodus
Megadeth
Manowar
Slayer (barely, may change my mind on that one)
Death Angel
- Exodus's Tempo of the Damned, along with Megadeth's The System has Failed, however, are indeed superior, as is anything by Overkill.

Why the fuck would they do that? The album really sounds horrible.. The GH version, on the other hand, is definitely a solid, back-to-basics Metallica sound.

I agree with everything Evan said minus Death Magnetic being better than The Formation of Damnation.

United Abominations is way better than Death Magnetic. The solos on DM are not too great. Maybe it's because Megadeth is one of my favorite bands but I thought UA was a solid album.
Lars' drumming is somehow worse than it was on Kill Em All, which came out 25 years ago. That doesn't make any sense.

United Abominations was okay, and "Washington Is Next" is one of my favorite Megadeth songs ever. However, I thought The System Has Failed, as a whole, was way better than UA.

TSHF had a much more natural sound to me. It fit in nicely with the Youthanasia/CTE sound with the occasional thrashier stuff thrown in here and there. UA sounds like Dave is trying to make Rust in Peace part 2, but he just doesn't have it in him any more and the whole thing comes out sounding dull and forced. With Death Magnetic, it really isn't AJFA 2 or MOP 2. It just sounds like Metallica took everything they've done and created a new sound from it, not try to recreate something that they did 20 years ago.
On a side note; anyone know if the Kirk Hammet or James Hetfield version of Suicide and Redemption in the Guitar Hero 3 mix is the one from the CD?

To me TSHF is a good album, but it has too many cheesy radio songs like Of Mice and Men, Die Dead Enough, etc. With UA, seems like Dave at least tried to make it heavier. When you compare it to just two albums ago (World needs a Hero) it's like night and day for me. I like the direction he's taking the band. I'm probably just being biased though because I like the band so much. DM has really crappy solos. At least Dave puts guys in the band who can actually put out something decent.

I just heard the album and I have to say that I'm pleasantly surprised how good it is. Its better than I expected. Really Kirk Hammett saves this album for me.
The best metal album should be the "Formation of Damnation" by Testament though; I know Evanft disagrees with me but opinions are like assholes - everyone has one.

I'd heard one song I really liked on the album, but hadn't heard the entire thing until someone played it at a party I was at last night. :D It was actually really good and I may pick it up myself now!! :)
