COBB COUNTY, Ga. (MyFox Atlanta) – Investigators with Cobb County police said a boy was decapitated at Six Flags amusement park Saturday.

Authorities said the incident happened just after 2:00 p.m. Saturday. A church group went to the amusement park and a group of boys with the group jumped a fence and entered an area that was marked off limits.

One of the boys jumped up and tried to grab someone's feet who was on the Batman ride. The boy ended up being decapitated.

Investigators did not release the boy's age, name or the name of the church the boy was traveling with.

"Police have declined to release the teenager's name until an autopsy is completed. "
...I'm guessing the general head/ torso area might be a good place to start.

What 17 year old kid in the right mind would jump 2 fences heading towards a roller coster?

Sofa King Kool

This reminds me of the roller coaster I invented called "Oh Fuck!"

You get into the roller coaster, then, you're slowly wheeled into a pitch black room. Doors close behind you, closing out any remaining source of light. The coaster sits there. Everyone on board waits. A minute passes. People on the coaster are beginning to wonder if the ride broke down. Another minute passes. The chatter increases. Another minute. People begin to worry; sitting alone in the silent darkness. Finally, the coaster moves. Everyone breaths a sigh of relief. The coaster slowly travels upward. Higher, higher, and higher. The coater climbs to the highest, legal limit. It stops. The coater slowly rolls over the edge. People yell and cheer as the coaster soars downward in the black abyss.

Then, without warning, a siren blares, and several feet down the track, haunting red lights illuminate a metal pipe extending across the track at neck level.
"OH FUCK" painted on the pipe. The park patrons begin to scream in terror, but their fear is short lived. Before they can duck, their heads have already been violently severed from their bodies.

The seats open, and the coaster comes to a sudden halt, effectively throwing the bodies into a massive pile. The coaster then goes through a rinse cycle, and returns to the entrance to pick up the next load of people.

Obviously, I feel bad for the family's loss - I won't mock that; the death of one's child - even if he is a moron - is not something I would even scoff at.

But I hardly call this tragic. If he was standing near the ride and someone dropped their cell phone and it bonked him on the head, killing him - that'd be tragic. If he hurt some poor rider with his stunt - that'd be tragic.

Or, even if it was a little kid, say ten-years-old, who hopped the fences, then I'd budge and say it was tragic, because kids don't know better.

But this was a 17 yr old that should know better, who chose to ignore warning signs that it was a restricted area and hopped not one - but two fences. I can't call this tragic.

EDIT: For some reason, I missed your last line when I was quoting you. Oh well, I still stand behind what I said, in case some fun governor comes in and says we're all sick for making fun of this.

A 16-year-old died after the Michigan Department of Transportation minivan she was sitting in on the shoulder of I-696 westbound in Southfield was hit by an SUV at about 1:30 p.m., according to Michigan State Police.

Lt. Shannon Sims said a 60-year-old man, driving a Ford Excursion, fell asleep, veered off the highway near the Lahser exit and slammed into the minivan, which the 16-year-old and a 19-year-old man were sitting in.

Both were taken to Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, where the 16-year-old later died. Sims said the 19-year-old is stable and expected to recover.

The teens, whose name has not yet been released, were working with MDOT’s youth program, helping to clean litter from the side of the highway.

The 60-year-old, whose name has not been released, was not arrested.
Sims said the man woke up just before the accident happened, but it was “too late to stop the vehicle.”

You know that carnival comes into town every year? Well this year they came through with a ride called The Mixer. The man said, "Keep your head, and arms, inside the Mixer at all times." But Bill Jr, he was a DAAAREDEVIL, just like his old man. He was leaning out saying "Hey everybody, Look at me! Look at me!" Pow! He was decapitated! They found his head over by the snow cone concession."

The story reminded me of the song above.

This doesn't make sense to me.

A person doesn't mind dying. That is, they can't care -- they're dead. The deceased can't have emotion, so it's silly to feel bad for them, or say it doesn't matter because of who they were. The aspect of death that should be saddening is the emotions of those affected, who survive and miss the presence of the deceased.

If the dumb coaster-jumping kid's friendly and family suffer more than van-girl's, I'd consider coaster-jumping kid's death to be more tragic.

This is a pretty dumb argument, but I think it gets down to a fundamental difference in how death is viewed.

This is like the third time. The idiots climb a huge fence and get under the batman ride. This ride is a hanging ride where the track is above you. You .can get into the park this way. The cut through where the ride goes over your head in a flip. Then you hop a short fence and your in the park for free. It happened last year too. Peoples heads get hit by peoples feet. Thats what they get for being stupid. Six flags should electify the fence.

That's wild.

Most of the time you have to try really hard to get killed by a roller coaster ride, and this is no exception. Still tragic though.

I think everyone here knows those kids who never listened to reason and always had to act the fool. Everyone has done something stupid at one point, but I figure the law of averages works to make victims out of the repeat offenders. Let's not forget that this kid put the rider in danger too - if the rider had lost a leg I doubt anyone here would feel any sympathy for the kid.

I think it's a little funny that the reporter used the wording "The boy ended up being decaptitated", almost implying that he sort of wasn't decapitated at first, and then some other stuff happened, and then finally decapitation took place. Anybody? No?

Anyway, this is pretty rough. I feel bad for the family. Especially years down the road when someone asks the parents if they have any kids, and then they say "We did, but our son passed away", and then the people say "Oh my God, I'm so sorry, what happened?", and then they have to reply "He got his head lopped off by a rollercoaster". Tragic.

The internet is so freaking unforgiving about stuff like this. But when you can't do decent things like not move in front of a speeding machine you're going to get no sympathy.

At the very least I hope this shows the kids he went to school/church with that your not immortal at 17. Wake your ass up and don't do stupid shit or your ass will be dead.

And his memory will live on. Every person waiting in line for that ride will talk about the kid who got his head ripped off getting a hat.

which six flags is this? I went to Great Adventure, and my cousin lost his hat on Superman Ultimate flight. they said he couldn't get it back until the park closed, so he just left it there. The ride goes dangerously low the the ground, so you would be decapitated if you wanted to retrieve anything. He didn't wanna wear glasses on the ride.

Anyway, anyone who goes in the path of a dangerous vehicle to retrieve something less than $20 is really stupid. Sure, its sad, but he shouldn't have done it at all. BTW, what happened on Apollo's chariet?

Edit: Read this: http://www.ajc.com/health/content/metro/cobb/stories/2008/06/28/six_flags_death.html
"According to police and the amusement park, Ferguson and a friend climbed over two 6-foot fences -- a wrought-iron style park perimeter fence and a second chainlink fence around the Batman ride -- as a shortcut to get back into the park after lunch. Signs about 40 to 50 feet apart on the outer fence warn that it is a "restricted area" for "authorized personnel only." According to park officials, a sign on a locked gate at the chain link fence also reads "Danger zone" and "Do not enter.""

Everyone in here making jokes about this ought to be ashamed. Uncalled for. It is obvious what he did was stupid. But imagine if a friend, a loved one, or a family member was reading this thread. Come on people, be compassionate.

He was stupid. Enough said. If a family member/loved one did something this stupid, I honestly wouldn't stop the jokes from coming, because it's damn obvious he deserves no compassion for being such a fucking dumbass.

So on my local news, they interviewed an eye witness who said two boys went over the fence. One kid ducked, the other kid was trying to grab some people's legs. He was then thrown against a pole and his head popped off from the force. Then the news anchor said that the kid might have been trying to get a hat. Someone needs to get the story straight. Was he grabbing legs while getting his hat? Was he just getting his hat? Was he tickling the feet of riders? I really hop he was trying to get his lost hat.

Still no answer, but we learned that your head can fall off from hitting a pole!

This is too funny. That dude was stupid. Period. I don't care if the guy was my brother, if I had to go to his funeral, I prolly would be cracking jokes in the eulogy.

I've lost a hat on a ride at that very same Six Flags park (not on Batman tho). Yeah, I was kinda mad, but I knew it was my own damn fault for forgetting to take it off. Did I jump a fence to get it back? Hell no. Consequently, I went back almost a month later, and the hat was still there underneath the coaster. Those kids that run the ride are so lazy, the dude's head may still be there too.

I don't feel sorry at all for the guy who lost his head. He was an idiot. He made an idoitic mistake. That mistake cost him his life. There usually are consequences to doing stupid stuff, and this dude suffered the ultimate consequence.

I DO feel sorry for the people who were undoubtably standing in line for an hour or more and couldn't ride the Batman ride because of this idiot. That would have pissed me off to no end if I had been in that line and told the coaster was being shut down cause of some douche broke the rules and got his head knocked off. This guy had no consideration for himself nor for others in the park, including his other church-mates who prolly had to cut their visit short because of this moron.

For everyone who's complaining about not not being compassionate, I save my compassion for bad things that happen to people beyond their control, this guy on the other hand, fully in control well up until Batman swung down on his head.

the fact that a person died is tragic, especially for all of his loved ones. but come on, the kid hopped two fences, ignored multiple signs saying "don't fucking go in there!" before proceeding to go the fuck in there anyway and ended up swatting at something going 60 miles per hour. are we REALLY going to try and trumpet bullshit compassion over this? honestly?

Also, Sofa King Kool, I had an idea for a coaster also. I called it the Russian Roulette. Basically, during one run each day, the seat restraints come unhinged in the middle of the ride.

The park would enjoy the added bonus of never running out of hot dogs, either.

Geez.

Now that I think about it, I remember yesterday that all the people riding any coaster where your feet hang (in this case, the Goliath and the Superman) who were wearing sandals or flip flops could take them off before the ride, so they wouldn't get thrown off during the trip.

I wonder if head-removal-ability is better served barefoot versus being shoe'd. Like if the half inch of rubber some kid in China is sewing onto a Nike show all the difference between a bad headache and decapitation.

Kendal
06-30-2008, 03:19 AM
From the news reports, it sounds like the head fell off from the force of being slammed into a pole. Probably a big ride support.

Strell
06-30-2008, 03:21 AM
Yeah, I get that. But does the elasticity of rubber ensure more force is adequately delivered into the body? Or is some of it lost in the transferral of energy?

These are questions of physics to be studied for the greater good, and also to determine if sweat shops are in possession of deadly weapons.

Kendal
06-30-2008, 03:26 AM
In this case, it seems like the train hit the kid, not a foot. In other cases, I would be surprised if the leg didn't come off as well and the head. Kind of like how Jack Handy hit his head into a dogs head in a passing car and the dog's head fell off. But since in these cases, a leg is not as strong as someone's neck, it might possibly break off after impact. I imagine it like a wishbone effect except no one is lucky and both involved wish they hadn't done it.

She is a mod, short for moderate (a balanced view on things), which is all that is being asked for. Discussion of race, religion and politics tend to bring out the fool in otherwise rational people. I hear that. I did so many stupid, dangerous things when I was that age, it's not even funny. But I always drew the line at stunts and selfish behavior that put other people at risk. This kid ("bonehead"?) could very easily have injured any of those riders, but for once the karmic scales of justice placed the consequences for that kind of behavior on the perpetrator, not an innocent bystander. So ... my sense of justice has outpaced my compassion on this one, I guess.

Honestly....why must you follow me around all the time. Seriously. Is there any logical reason why you absolute must quote me every single time I say something? You really are pathetic.

I await you witty remark.

By the way you are confusing my announcement of summer vacations as I usually dont visit CAG during the summer with actually bans. I have only been banned twice...maybe a 3rd for a day ban.

Please get your facts right.

EDIT: Makes me remember the time I ignored your jives for about a month and then you literally went out of your way for an entire page to get me to respond to something. And when I finally did with a simply 1 word post you glowed like a little school girl. Very happy to know that Soodmeg didnt have you on ignore.

Strange that you constantly say that I am starting agruments....but I never say anything to you.

Who am I arguing with right now? I made a observation, posted it....2 people disagreed and the mod agreed. Where is the argument? Then it ended.

Whats hysterical how often you appear when I never actually talk to you and how mad it makes you that I dont try to join flame wars. How as soon as I say....hmm I guess I should drop this topic as I dont want it to lead to a flame war is the very second that you appear each and every time.

I remember at Great America, this also happened. I think a kid wanted to get his change, and someone came and kicked him ( Top Gun) . They broke their legs and the kid went flying :/

I remembered that as well, execept that it was a man trying to get his hat, and he climbed a fence and he die. The woman on the ride broke her leg.

Six Flags need to put a giant sign in bright letters in restricted areas stating, "STAY THE FUCK OUT!!". And you have to put in that f-word in, because people feel strongly about it; let's them know you ain't playing.

He died what I call, a Darwin's death.

Ok, so now they are saying the kid was hopping the fences for a shortcut. I still like the hat story better. It is just better irony.Shortcut to what? I'm familiar with this park and this ride and the layout and I'm danged if I can figure out where he thought he was taking a shortcut to.

And yes, the hat is far better for irony and believability. Everyone loses hats on rollercoasters. My big brother and I were on the shockwave or some other coaster at Six Flags over Texas, and some dude's hat about three cars ahead of us went flying off. Jim caught it, I've never seen him react that fast before.

I haven't missed a season in over 20 years. I have been spoiled by living next to one of the best amusement parks. When I go to other parks I can enjoy myself, and I do. But I sometimes think, this is cool but it is no Cedar Point. If you do go, I can give you some seasoned vet tips for rides and such.

The notion that this kid was reaching up to grab at people on the train is not a fact. Also it seems unlikely that he was kicked by anyone, and instead was more likely hit by the train itself because there are no reports of other injuries (that's my own deduction, not a fact either, but it seems likely to me because if somebody kicked him at those speeds, their leg would have at least been broken). Some witnesses said only that he was trying to retrieve something, other witnesses said he was trying to touch the train. They might have been right, but they may not have been right. Witnesses sometimes (often?) don't really know what has happened.

I am sure he will end up getting a Darwin Award. I am sorry, the stupid must be punished.

What are we going to create another law to protect the stupid.

"Ordanance 2008.7.1.12, all people who enter amusement parks must wear helmets and buckle up at rides, punishable by $200 fines for either."

Somehow I can see that getting created which would absolutely do nothing for getting decapitated.

The lawyer is such a tit. He is in over his head. So the fact that they have the area fenced off and signs of warning isn't enough? I don't think any judge with a good head on his shoulders would hear 5 minutes of this case.

The fences were only six feet tall. I'm not convinced they are off the hook.

Straight from the lawyer's mouth. Two 6' fences and signs all over the place aren't enough? Should the entire fucking ride be encased in a cage? Or would they then be at fault when some shit-brained ape fucker falls to his death because they made it so enticing to climb?

Your son is dead. Your son is dead due to no one's fault but his own, and your inept parenting ability. And it's the park's fault for not making taller fences?! I hope Darwin strikes again before these jackholes make it to court.

Geoffrey Hamrick was one of Ferguson's friends and remembers him as a person he knew would always lend a head.

"He knew more about Algebra than I did," Hamrick said. "If I needed help, I could talk to him. He was sitting right there beside me. His specialty was dividing by poles."

Hamrick recently saw Ferguson and described him as happy. For Hamrick, learning about the death of his friend was hard to bear.
"I went in the bathroom and started crying," Hamrick said. "Yeah, I'm pretty much a pussy."

The gym is left without one of its favorite sons, and a boy without a head.

This is honestly the first time I hope Six Flags wins a court case. For once, it wasn't their fault that something went wrong. Well not for once, but they have a major history of maintenance done poorly/incorrectly/not done at all or Ride Operator error. This was none of them. Maybe they could have made the fence 12 feet high, electrified and a moat filled with alligators and the plague. But then when someone gets fried, bitten and plagued, someone would sue.

Heads will roll if this is not thrown out!
