Let's put this age old rivalry to rest on CAG. So which one do you prefer. I go with Cats, because of the ones I have had, they seem more loyal than dogs.

Edit: fixed title.

Unless you want to be totally ignored, then go with cat.

Cats... Too many ugly breeds of dogs. Plus, I've never heard of anyone mauled to death by a house cat. Scratched and bit, sure, but not killed.

Really tough to say, but I had a loving and adorable little affectionate cat, plus they clean and bathe themself and get litter box trained, so probably cats very slightly over.

Dogs, I have a cat and it SUCKS (i'd give it a way, but my sister likes it)
It wakes me up at 3:00 for food and getting let out
It kills animals and leaves them on the doormat

I know many dogs may do these things too, but the animal just completely ignores me. Meanwhile every dog owner I know loves their dog, and I've taken care of a dog for about 2 weeks while a friend was on vacation, and loved every minute of it

Why don't you just leave food for it in a bowl or in one of those container that you fill it up and food just falls down as it goes away. I think a cat waking you up is better than Dog howling at the top of its lung at 3-4 in the morning. that's what my neighbor's dog does.

What is all of this talk about cats being 'clean'? Granted, dogs don't clean themselves as thoroughly as cats do, but do you have any idea what it is like inside a cat's mouth? Disgusting, bacteria-laden mess in there. And they 'clean' themselves with that mouth. A dog's mouth is far more hygienic than even a human's mouth. Go dogs go!!

actually cats mouths are really clean, they have antibacterial saliva, in fact if you ever have a cut you can have your cat lick it and thatd be better than doing nothing to it.

u were right, a cat bite can get seriously infected. I know one of my mom's coworkers almost lost her arm because it was bitten by her pet cat. Dogs can help wounds heal quicker

I'm a dog person hands down. There are cats that are cool, but dogs are just more loyal. Plus a dog is a bastion of unfettered love. Dogs get happy to see you every time you come home, while a cat couldn't give a fuck unless you stop feeding it.

It kills animals and leaves them on the doormat

The cat is doing this because it loves you. Its leaving the animals as a gift to you. It thinks its bringing you food, there is no greater honor a cat can give you. Though, considering what you think of it, they probably aren't for you.

I like what the father said about cats and dogs on Meet the Parents.

"See, Greg, if you yell at a dog, his ears will go down and his tail will cover his genitals even if he's done nothing wrong. It's very easy to break a dog. But cats make you work for their affection. Cats don't sell out like dogs do."

Any advice for the first time cat owner? I live in an apartment, so I am trying to figure out things like a good spot for the litter pan (bathroom unfortunately is too small), etc. etc. Any information would be helpful.

Bathroom can be a bad place if it gets to humid in there. I kep mine near the bathroom in the hallway. I scooped it our almost daily. There was no smell, and it didnt look to bad either. You can get litter boxes that have covers on them.

Maybe putting it where you keep your washing machine/dryer if you have one. Oh don't declaw a cat, I've read that it's like the equivalent to chopping the ends of our fingers.

Thanks to all for the advice. I've also heard the same thing about declawing and that the cat won't damage furniture if it is taught to use a scratch post and its nails are clipped regularly. Someone dumped a cat in my apartment complex, and it has been wandering around for a few weeks trying to find a home. It is very friendly. I would be afraid to declaw it if I end up catching it, since it is not afraid of being outside and I wouldn't want it to be hurt in a fight. I intend to keep it inside, but in case it would sneak out...

Yaeh that was another reason I did not declaw my cats, because they sometimes run out into the garage, and if they were out on the street they wouldn't be able to defend/hunt for themselves. And that is true about the scratching post. My cat has also learned how to use the end of a wall which not a lot of paint comes off so I just let him.
