Whoa awesome. Just unlocked the Slutty Nurse Social Link. Its already Sept 27th though. I don't think I'll have enough time to max many of my social links. I just maxed the first one with Chie. Although Yumi and Yukiko are at level 9, most everyone else is pretty low.

Yeah, I screwed up Slutty Nurse like hardcore. I get to the end of November and decide to try out a job for the lulz. Then I find out that not only is the hospital job an S-link, but the daycare and the tutoring are too. I was raging pretty hardcore once I found that out, because all my other jobs resulted in nothing but money and status increases and there was nothing to indicate doing other jobs would lead to S-links.

An interesting tidbit of info: The mythological gods Izanagi & Orpheus share a similar story in that they both decended into the underworld in order to save their spouse only to tragically lose them in their attempt. I just found it intersting since both are the main characters starting Persona in their respective games. I wonder if it's a coincidence or the creators specificlly wanted a tragic mythological god as the MCs Persona?
As you may tell I'm bored at work.
If you find stuff like that interesting you should look into this book I bought last year. Its as an RPG fan(and a mytho nerd)extremely interesting. Its called The Element Encyclopedia of Magical Creatures: The Ultimate A-Z of Fantastic Beings From Myth and Magic
http://www.amazon.com/Element-Encyclopedia-Magical-Creatures-Fantastic/dp/140273543X
It has a list of like every freaking mythological creature ever created then info on each and every one of them. Some of them only get a paragraph but some of the definitions stretch on for pages. I havnt really broke it out for Persona yet(god ill never stop reading the damn thing with the way SMT uses mythos)but I did for a number of RPGs and its amazing how many creatures you would think developers just dreamt up are actually have real life history that's extremely interesting.
There are a few other books in the line as well such as the encylopedia of 5,000 spells but they are not nearly as cool.

His stats are weak in comparrison.
For my second play through, I don't need resistances at the early dungeons, just using the most powerful Personas to stomp through the shadows quickly.

Use the standard buffs/debuffs. Attack + and Accuracy/Evade + on your team and Defense - on the boss.
If you haven't figured it out already, when atmosphere changes, whatever element the boss uses on you becomes stronger against him for the duration of the atmosphere change. So use that element all you can.
When he takes your characters over, just make sure you have a Persona with Null Physical or is strong against physical attacks, since that's what they tend to attack with.

Magic Mirrors.
Wait until the boss does an atmosphere shift, then have everyone use a magic mirror. Boss rolled over two rounds after the first atmosphere shift.
I used all my Magic Mirrors on the last boss :-P I tried that same tactic with Makarakan but the boss has a move that dispells it. You need to grind some moar and probably get better Personas. My MC was like 53 before finishing that dungeon, and 55 after the dungeon's bonus boss.

Pisses me off that Magic Mirrors and Diamond Shields only cover one person instead of the party like in Persona 3.

Well, I plan on leveling more, although I really have no idea how skill inheritance works. I basically just click around and see what my options are. I've always had a knack for beating games underleveled, so hopefully I can do it again. (Was about 5 levels under what the guide recommended for the Void Quest boss, although that was a brutal fight).
If only I wouldn't have died when I had double EXP going. I was leveling up nearly every fight.
Yay I finally beat that boss I was stuck on. Shit just got real tense.

That's bad, I also haven't started tower... I assume it's the tutoring one? (I don't have max understanding yet). I'm aiming to max as many as I can and ignore others unless I have nothing else to do (starting with females and team members), possibly ignoring Kanji (I forget about him since he's in the practice building and he sucks in fights - at least the little I have used him).

I'm at Magatsu town right now. I've been using Chie, Akiko, and Naoto since I got him. All in the low 60s. I'm going to try to level up Teddie to replace Chie and Yosuke to replace Naoto (haven't really decided on that one) before the boss. Not much time and I still need to max Yosuke and Rise's S Links if I set that as my party.

Most of characters in this game have some sort of use. I find Naoto be the most useless. Her death spells maybe good on normal enemies(if they arn't immune to them), but when it comes to bosses she is horrendous. The only offensive she got against a boss is almighty spell coupled with misplaced mind charged(the only ally with this skill). Almighty spell doesn't pack much of punch compare to elemental counterpart without boost, amp or equipment. High cost of spell doesn't help either. They should of dump that skill to character that can fully utilize that skill such as Teddy, Yosuke or Yukiko.
Also, I find it strange that Kaiji have absurd amount of strength with low magic stats, yet he's coupled with high-end elemental attacks. He got some good physical skills like Primial Force and attack buff, but it's not enough to compensate lackluster physical skill line up. He should at least have a power charge with some passive defensive skills.

I was going by the fact that at all the forums I post at and out of the dozens of reviews I had read/watched you and game informer were the only 2 that had anything bad to say about the game. Added with the fact that everyone was saying this was mostly Persona 3 with some new additions but the additions, story and music were all better.....and again wasnt judging the game but saying it was hard to believe it wasnt going to be a game worthy of higher then a freaking 7.25 and an 8.

Kanji's low Magic kills his Zio skills, and his Agility doesn't help much either.
I find Naoto very useful. He's that character thats dumped in near the end of the game that picks up all the left over skills. It's just a shame that most of his spells use up a ton of SP. Mind Charge + Megidoloan is awesome, but such a drain.

Just beat the mid boss of the secret lab (the transformer dude thing) mainly from damage it did to itself even though I was massively underleveled (I'm 47). Everyone else was dead from the second or third attack on. when it started waiting and cast last resort I got a little scared, but it only did 70 damage for some reason
Unfortunately I'm assuming this is like nocturne and that means the next boss will probably have null phys and all kinds of elemental attacks...
They definitely did better than P3 in including funny conversation choices that I need to pick even though I know they won't work "what does he has the most brains mean?" "He's not an athlete" was too good

And so wait, looking at DoK's response you get it not from placing top 10 but placing at the head of your class spot 1? I got the thing from the teacher but as I said Nanako and Dojima nothing so what DoK is saying would make sense.

2. You're not doing to bad in this aspect. If you eat at Aiya everytime it rains you shouldn't have a problem. Trust me, this is the best way to level up stats in the game. Remember that some S.Links help boost your stats, for example the day dare job (understanding), janitor (courage), sports club (dillagence) & culture club (expression). Maybe it would be a good idea to work on these so you can take care of both. I suggest the culture club since it also helps your Expression which is one of the more important stats, plus you recive a few other stat bonus if you select the right thing to say. Don't worry about Dillagence, it's almost useless.

I'm nearly finished with the true ending. Doubt I'll be playing the game again, though it did keep me entertained. It lacked something that P3 had and I can't quite figure out what it is. My biggest complaint was the change in color scheme. Persona 3 was relaxing to play due to the blue/black color scheme.
Also, I'm a bit irked that just like P3, the game is advertised to play over the course of a year, but it skips the last 3 months.

P3's blue/black theme fit in with moody city life. Plus the changes in the storyline revolved around the phases of the moon. I'll be honest P4's colors seemed a bit off at first but looking back I think it fits in well. Shades and gray might have made more sense (fog, rain, etc) but gray isn't very eye catching.

Yeah, not too bad, eh? There were a few things that were irksome (dungeon camera, no/limited s-links on rainy days, etc), but the color is what really jumped out. I had a hard time playing for long stretches because the yellow was too bright.

I was on floor 5 of the 7th dungeon... then I got Last Resorted by sum evil dice or something...
 sux coz I really wanted to beat that stage, time is too expensive to afford another go tonite...
anyway I gotta say, I love my Chie, Yukiko, Naoto team!!
Batltoad + Chie + Naoto = attack-all physical attacks for days!! Kanji doesnt even have an attack all!!
all-physical attacks is pretty much mamudo, except much more effective. I dont even care about weaknesses anymore...
then Yukiko + half-SP accessory = hella healing.
tis a shame tho, physical attacks dont work well against those dice

Chie on the other hand gots God Hand, Tarakuja, and Power Charge... plus a fantastic attack all skill.

Speaking of this. I just posted this question at gamefaqs.
I'm guessing that Persona 4, like Persona3 has a mode where you can start the game over again with stats like diligence and courage at their current ranks. I'm a little over half way through the game right now and I'm pretty sure I won't be able to max out my S.links. so I wanted to start a new game plus as soon as possible. What's the first date that I can get an ending that lets me start the game over and a new game plus? Ill worry about getting the good ending the second play through, just want to hit an ending where I can start over with my current stuff ASAP.

hopefully the true final boss will go down that easy! lol.
anyway ending stats:
all stats MAX except Dilligence (rank 4)
all S.Link MAX except:
Justice (rank 8) and Tower (rank 9)... I couldnt get to these in time due to stats
Moon (rank 8) and Hanged (rank 8)... nah fukk these guys.

How does it work if you end up with the bad or the not-so-perfect ending? Do you just avoid overwriting your game after the credits roll, reload your game and do something different?
Basically, is there any way I can screw myself and create a scenario where I go, "Oh crap, I just got the bad ending, but now I have to restart the entire game because the branch was 2 months back"?
Can that information even be conveyed without spoilers?
Rodimus
01-15-2009, 06:24 PM
You don't have to worry about accidentally getting the bad/normal ending & screwing it up. Once you're on the path it happens that day and you're done. Just reload and try again. I purposely wanted to see the bad ending, and it's not very happy.
The bad ending happens on December 3rd

Ya, I think its one of only 2 glaring problems I have with this series.
The choices needed to get the different endings and ranks up to your S.Links can be pretty odd/random. Like I would have never thought telling Kanji he needs to change himself would get an S.Link up vs telling him to simply apologize to his mother. I would like in the next game for it to be more apparent what paths lead to what endings and for S.Links ranking up be like 75% just having a conversation and 25% your answers.
The other problem I mentioned is the pacing of the game. The dungeons are entirely too damn long as are many of the story parts. Its kind of annoying that the game is broke up into huge segments of one thing or the other, like 2 hours of story and being not in control of your characters followed by an hour of S.Links then a dungeon for 2-5 hours just to have the whole thing repeat.

Went up against the true ending boss for the first time and everything went smoothly, until it cast Megidoloan... I hadn't had any problems the first five or so times it was cast, but for some reason this time it took nearly 700 HP off my MC, about 200 off Teddy, and the other two dodged it. Everyone was at full health, but even so, MC died.

No mind charge. It was absolutely bizarre. I even had the same Persona (Metatron) equipped as I did when it was taking off 200 - 250. This also occurred right after I dropped her to 0 HP and she wouldn't take any damage, so everyone was guarding except Teddie.
8:15 edit: And it's game over. Nothing really changed this time around, yet I smashed through the boss without a problem. Even with mind charge active, megidoloan took off about 150 (not guarding). Absolutely bizarre...

Finally got to some dungeon crawling. Got to the first boss Yukiko's guard and got my ass handed to me. Now I have to start over. I'm really missing P3's save-point-before-a-boss. I understand that it was kinda cheap being able to go back to the 1st floor for an automatic replenishment of HP and SP and then continue from the floor you left off at, but I'm an adult with a lifestyle that simply does not support marathon sessions without a save point.
God, I got greedy. I should have backed out and come back the next day. But I didn't want to do that because I didn't want to have to work my way back up to 5F again.

How hard is the rescue nanako boss? The book makes it seem really hard, but it also make the shadow naoto fight seem really hard, when it really wasn't. Would level 65 be a good level perhaps?

It's pretty tough, around 65 should be plenty good enough a level to face him on though. Just make sure you have a Persona with solid defense, as well as a good healing spell you can use or items on hand. Also, be sure to have a Persona that can reflect an element, any element will do. Marakukaja will help a lot towards the end of the fight, when he starts spamming his high-damage/hit everyone attack.

Ok, so I never played any of the Shin Megami Tensei games but I'm intrigued by all the praise these games have gotten. For someone who is completely new to the series, should I just get Persona 4 as my first experience or should I wait till a "definitive" version of the game comes out a la Persona 3 (if there's even one planned) since I have a huge backlog anyway. My concern is that sometimes these JRPGs become hard to find later on, but it still seems like you can get a special edition version of Persona 3 FES off amazon for $26 shipped (http://www.amazon.com/Persona-FES-Soundtrack-Artbook-Playstation-2/dp/B001G0MG8W/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1233026598&sr=8-1). Hmm I haven't finished yet, but I have to say... how disappointed can you really be over a JRPG ending? Are you really playing for an enthralling story? That's not to say that we shouldn't demand better, but it's hard to feel let down when the current state of the medium keeps expectations low. So far for me the game is just one big episode of Scooby Doo.

P4 took everything about P3 and tweaked it to make it better. I also like how there's not as much emphasis on grinding, and that each dungeon is a drastic change in scenery. They're short and sweet, and that's perfect. P3 felt like "Tartarus: The Game" but P4 doesn't feel like that.

I totally agree that the gameplay is better and that its nice having new settings. There are other improvements too like being allowed to press Square and warp to a different part of a building your in. But everything else I dont think P4 has a huge win in. The story I was kind of split but would probally give to P4. The cast I am really split on but again would probally give to P4(though I really miss Junpei and hate Yukiko). The great thing is that they are clearly diffrent games. I think this is a important, if P4 was an exact copy paste it would feel cheap. Efforts where made to make the gameplay a little diffrent wheather you like them or not.

I'm surprised that there are so many people that like the P4 gameplay better. I think to some degree you're getting the overall gameplay and the ability to control your party mixed. While the latter is definitely a gameplay element (and improvement), many other parts of the battle system were tweaked (for the worse, IMO).
It's too hard to sneak up on the shadows. First strike seems largely random until you've leveled up beyond the shadow you are attacking. The camera through the dungeons is much more difficult to work with.
As for the battle system itself, it was too easy to manipulate - especially since you could do a second attack if you hit one weakness, regardless of how the other characters/shadows reacted to the attack.
I am in agreement with magus, however, I'd love to see a hybrid of the two.

Overall I think P3 bests P4 in terms of battle system and in-game control.
I think some of the tweaks in P4 are great (party control) and some suck (new guard/weakness rules, new horrible dungeon camera).

Wtf... Naoto's a chick?!? That caught me off guard a little bit... but I would have probably figured as much if I paid more attention to the dialogue. :-#
It's supposed to catch you off guard.

It didn't caught me off guard at all. They did a horrible job concealing the voice.

Speaking of Naoto I liked the part where they go to the doctor's office and Rise is looking at Naoto's stats...where does she hide em??

Probably pulling a Hilary Swank from Boys Don't Cry. I wonder if Naoto wears anything other then the boy's school uniform later on in the game...

I just picked this up. After watching the Endurance Runs on Giant Bomb, the Amazon deal pushed me over the edge.
I still have not played Persona 3 even though I own it, so hopefully Persona 4 does not spoil me.

There's a short cameo of a character from P3 but you won't notice it anyway ;).
I finished the game yesterday after 87+ hours of gameplay. All the endings were sad in a way, especially the bad one. It might just be wishful thinking but I'd love to see a FFX2-esque sequel. Perhaps the MC comes back to Inaba after several years to see that the fog has come back in the TV world or some shit like that.
Now I need to find a new RPG to preoccupy myself... any suggestions? :)

Glad to see you picked it up, hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I miss playing this game, it was my 08' GOTY. I'm thinking about going back and playin P3 again. But Star Ocean is coming out in a week. I can't play 2 RPGs at once.

That field trip was one of my favorite parts of the game. I only wish they would have met more of Persona 3's cast then just those few.

Just finished Secret Laboratory in one trip. Was it just me or were the bosses their some of the easiest in the entire game? The boss was hitting my weakness and doing like 120 damage, it was kinda a joke.

I just picked this up in the Amazon Gold Box this week, and... wow.. I haven't even touched another game since I put it in. I'm kind of ashamed as an RPG fan that this is my first time playing this series. I'm definitely going to go back and at least play P3 now.

Okay, I'm sure this is a dumb question and I'm sorry if it's been discussed before but even after reading gamefaqs I still need a bit of an explanation...
How exactly does the weather system in P4 work in regards to saving people trapped in the tv world? I guess on a foggy day they get killed off unless you save them in time, but I still don't get when that is. I read that it's after a rainy day, usually two weeks, but I look at my weather forecast and it looks like there's a couple of rainy days on there. Is it all based on chance that it may or may not fog up after a day of rain, or are you always guaranteed two weeks before the fog sets in?
Perhaps someone can also advise me on how to approach the game pacing-wise. When the raven-haired girl goes missing I tried to clear out that dungeon immediately because I was under the impression you had to do it ASAP since the characters considered it an urgent issue, but I just get my ass handed to me by the bosses so I'm guessing you gotta spend some time boosting your levels. Can someone suggest a good balance of time I should be dedicating to dungeon hacking and how much I should be working on school life stuff each week?

It tells you numerous times that fog comes after several days of rain.

I'm sure someone already answered this question before ^^, but do you need to have played a persona game before (1-3) to fully enjoy persona 4?
it looks like an awesome game but I don't have time for so many rpgs ^^

^ No you don't. They do have a cameo in P4 of a minor NPC character from P3, but the stories & characters are completly seperate.

Ditto. Love the game, but I'd kind of like to just wrap up the ending, and not have some ridiculously difficult fight to go through.

Any tips on power leveling the MC and persona's? I'm level 82 at the last dungeon and I'm only getting like 1000 exp from battles on the 8th floor. Help!

I've played FFVI through probably 20-25 times, and that's over 15 years. Right now I'm feeling the same way about P4.

I just want to recommend everyone check out giantbomb's video series playing persona 4. They have 25 videos so far (each between 15 and 50 minutes - mainly about 20), going through the end of the first dungeon. It's just them playing the game and talking (neither of them have played it before). I find it quite entertaining, and it's interesting to watch how other people approach their RPGs. You'll find all of them if you click the endurance run link on their videos page.
I'm hoping they do it with Nocturne next because I never finished that and had no idea what was going on (of course at this pace, releasing a 20 min video every day, Persona 4 will take them most of the year)

Just finished up the dungeon where you rescue Nanako. Final boss killed me once, mainly because i had buffed my party members attack right before he took all 3 of them over LOL. 2nd time i raped him hard. Wish i had more time to really spend on the games, think i put in around 55 hours so far.

i'm actually thinking i might complete this game, since the story is pretty interesting and i'm not a big fan of random battles. compared to nocturne, which was pretty hard and less forgiving in the battle system. plus, the story in nocturne was kinda blah (played for about 30 hours i think), personas a little harder to collect, and funky mazes. eh, i do still kinda like nocturne though don't get me wrong.

The real ending isn't that different, actually. It's what's in between that's interesting, and totally changes things. I feel bad for anyone who plays not knowing that there's so much more content at the end that can be easily missed.

funny, i never even pressed that status button on the main menu...only a few times. haha. anyways, i got the true ending today after getting the bad ending (and going WTF?!?!), so the P4 game is pretty cool... i started Persona 3 awhile back but was kind of turned off by all the dark brooding atmosphere and only got an hour into it. So...gonna try it out again. Anyone else here think P4 is better than P3?

Are you sure you got the true ending and not the normal ending? The true ending involves tackling another dungeon after meeting up with all the people you maxed out social links with.
P3 and P4 are definitely different games. Pretty much P3 is more epic from what I hear and P4 is lighthearted.

yah, i did....the P4 bad ending was pretty horrible and dark. in the true ending i went through that extra dungeon and fighting that last BIG boss. just started P3 again and kinda liking it so far (although the graphics are better in P4)... one thing i liked in P3 is that once you enter your dorm building, you can sort of go in and out without the game advancing to the next day. i guess i gotta give the game time to enjoy it more.

I really think Persona 4 is the better game, mainly because of the improvements in design over Persona 3 (having control of your characters, knowing what each spell actually does, having Guard command, the more variety in the dungeons, being able to switch locations just by pressing square, among others). The voiceacting is a lot better in P4 too, I thought.

I just started P4 (on April 20) and I have a question about flow of events/time. In P3, you could spend your anfternoon doing a Social Link and still dungeon crawl later. It seems like in P4 you have to either do an S Link OR go into the TV, but then your evening is free (although I'm not sure what I can use that time for besides studying anyway). Is that true? Or can I somehow do an S Link and go into the TV on the same day?

as you progress through the game, you will find many more things to do during the evening, however. But yes in the afternoon its either TV or nothing else

Even tough your options seem limited in P4 you do level faster and the game progresses quicker as oppsosed to P3. From what I remember playing through each dungeon twice should net you plenty of experiance and is perfered since your second run normally grants you a nice weapon at the end. Other than that you'll have a good amount of time to level up S.Links.
