I really, really hope there's a 'community' for this, oh, two weeks from now. (As this DotD is arguably a major red flag if there ever was one.)

Here goes noth--I mean, $45....

EDIT: Read subsequent comments, got cold feet, canceled. Maybe when it's sub-$30. Next week, in other words.

Well, I can say for sure that the PC version is horrible folks...There is literally nobody playing online..maybe 50 people at any given time. Stay away unless you like fighting bots. You are much better off grabbing the Orange Box.

5 games included, and hundreds of people playing TF2 24/7

There aren't hundreds of people playing TF2...but you can still get a good game. I stopped about a month ago, but back then, you could easily get a full game, unless it was really, really strange hours.

It's a good deal for a new release, but it also makes me worry about the 360 release even more. The 360 version doesn't allow mods like the PS3 or PC version, despite coming out after the other two. As much as I like the previous Tournaments, I'll have to pass for now.

$45 is a great deal. The game has received a lot of good reviews so I don't really see any reason why this would be a 'red flag' for a price drop

The game has received a lot of good reviews so I don't really see any reason why this would be a 'red flag' for a price drop

The aforementioned "red flag" is not about the game's quality, but instead the game's longevity (or lack thereof) as an online draw. That's kind of the point of this series, after all. I just think that a 25% drop for a game released a day ago is maybe a clue that Amazon looked at the lack of preorders and Day One sales and said "Uh...Oh...". When was the last time--if ever--that they marked a brand new game down so aggressively, so quickly? I don't remember it ever happening.

Seriously, with just a little patience, I'll bet it could be had new for half-price before Labor Day. I think Epic and Microsoft have kind of ensured that this one is effectively D.O.A. On top of that, I think most of the Live crowd 'trying something new' will be stuck on Bad Company for the better part of the summer, causing this title to barely blip on the radar.

I'm going to wait to find out how many of my mates are getting this or have it before I commit. But honestly, I have zero worries about quality UT2K4 is still one of the best multiplayer games ever and I doubt Epic would have ruined that.

I have a feeling this is even going to hit $40 over the next few months. Reason being this is already cheaper on the PC and PS3, and if Amazon is already throwing a DOTD I would throw a red flag up. Regardless I want this game and for a brand new release at $15 that's a pretty damn good deal, and waiting a month or two might net you at the most $5 off a brand new title anyways. I would say go for it.

Edit: I held off because I didnt have any amazon gift cards. Oh well, if it stays at $50 or less I'll still get a "better deal". Regardless if your not in the same boat as me, you need to jump on this deal.

Yeah I think the writing is on the wall for this game, I wouldn't be surprised to see this drop much further in the coming months, problem is by then there might not be many people still playing it.

Despite the unlimited modding and available use of keyboard/mouse, the PS3 version blew. There was simply no one playing, and even during peak hours there would be about a billion empty servers and maybe 1 or 2 that were full... and it seems like when you did get in a reasonably busy game, everyone would leave after the round.

Not touching the 360 version until it hits $25 or lower.

Probably because it would be unfair to have a bunch of people running around with controllers trying to go up against people using a kb/mouse.

As someone who owned the PS3 version, how well or not well this game did on the PS3 is irrelevant here as the game was severely hindered by PSN. All you want to do in an online game is get into the game and be able to talk/hear on your mic, right? Well, on the PS3 version this was an hour long affair. Joining a game with 7 friends and talking to each other just wouldn't work.

I'm rebuying this on the 360 for Live where joining a game with a bunch of friends should be as easy as a button click, and a 5 second affair instead of a 60 minute one.

I couldn't resist. Damn, two deals in two days from Amazon for me. Pre-Orders must have been REALLY low at Amazon for this kind of a drop, but I'm still enjoying Enemy Territory and that wasn't exactly an earthshaker in the sales (or reviews) department.

I'm in the UT3 defense force. Yes it's true that the servers are kind of lonely on PC and PS3, but this game has great bots and that's a rarity in the console world. So unless you just hate bots, with all of the maps and whatnot you will get your money's worth.

Lack of mods was a big deal for The Orange Box, but not for UT3 since there isn't anything worth installing anyway. The PC and PS3 versions are ghost towns and I don't see it being any different on the 360. I'd stay away unless you're happy playing with bots.

I'd pass. It's certainly no UT2k4 and the PC version failed to hold my interest... and if you've got a capable PC this title's found on the cheap in a lot of stores, about 8 months after release.

I've had decent experiences online with the PS3 version (if my sig didn't give me away!) and there's a group of us from CAG which try to play every week. The mod community isn't as active as you would hope, but the fact that it's supported at all is impressive for a console, and I'm hoping it sets a precedent for future games.

I think the 360 version is on sale since you can get both the PS3 and PC versions for about $30 each, and it's being released over 6 months later with less options (IE mods). That, and the FPS genre is a little more bloated and competitive on 360, to the point that this release seems kind of arbitrary despite my love of the UT series.

Really, I wouldn't be surprised if they were just trying to make up for the losses on the PC from rampant piracy - I recall Epic saying that they had millions of fake serial keys trying to access their servers. Sales were surprisingly low, considering how positive the reviews were and how popular previous games have been.

I canceled my order. I'll still rent it, but I figure this won't be great. Probably just another "Frontlines: Fuel of War" or "Enemy Territory: Quake Wars". A semi-decent shooter worth playing for a day or two but that's it.

So... I didn't know there were any hardcore TF2 players around. I'll play some with you! Gamertag: Quasar281

I'm buying it. Hell, I'm having a hard time deciding if I want to save $15 and get it sometime next week (according to Amazon's shipping estimate) or just get it for full price at Gamestop today.

Same here. I can find games easily for TF2 on the 360. I just hate that Valve released the 360 game, patched it a few times for bugs and then quit. I know the MS certification process takes awhile, but you've given us a dead game compared to the PC version!

How is this release arbitrary? Unreal Championship was one of the most played games on the original Xbox Live. There's plenty of people looking forward to it. Not to mention, anyone who was looking forward to it initially but didn't own a PS3 or a beefy PC, or the fact that the 360 installed user base blows the PS3's out of the water.

Also, a quick update: I can't figure out if I should get this today or on Amazon. I'm such a douche.

As for the PS3 version, well, it was just ok. I bought mine with a gift card when i was bored one day and I haven't regretted it. Like others have said, the community is dwindling by the day, even though there was really no one on to begin with.

That being said, there were a handful of times where me and a bunch of random people played on the same map for hours and we all had a blast. IF the community begins to swell a little bit (ie COD4 and Halo 3 players want something else to play for a month) then this game is worth it.

I just placed my order on Amazon. $45 with free shipping and no tax is an awesome deal. I am a UT whore and I have been dying to play this, but my computer went tits up last summer and my lappy barely runs minesweeper. I was looking for a deal on this game so I was stoked to check CAG this morning. Now I just have to drool by the mailbox until the game shows up. I don't know why everyone is worried about there not being a community to play. This is the only real twitch shooter on the 360. Sure, it's an old-school throwback now, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who's looking for some high-speed gibbing with a flak cannon.

Save the giftcard and get it at Amazon. Plus Wal-mart adds tax which is $4-5 so that's really $50 and not $45. The giftcard would come in handy for a game like Gears 2 on release day which there prpobably wont be a deal on for $45 for a while.

Anyway, I picked one up. Thx Cheapy.

You guys are the only ones who will be playing it, and half of you guys will stop playing it in a few days after you get it. I have it on the PS3 and its ok but its no COD4/GOW online. If the PC version has no one playing, then this thing is dead in the water. The fact that its discounted 25% of its MSRP on day one shows you this thing was released just to fulfill a contract and get it out of the way. I really wanted to enjoy it, but its not that great. Just a heads up, this thing will be 20 bucks shipped at gamefly in no time.

Oh lord. Negative much? I could find games on my PS3 copy before I sold it last month no problem. The game is going to sell better for the 360 because of the anticipation felt by fans of Unreal Championship and those who can't run the damn thing on their PCs because it's a hardware hog, like Crysis. Great game, low sales, because it requires a very expensive PC to run.

Some people have just not liked Unreal in general, of some versions of it. This has been the case since 10 or so years ago when the first one came out. I've messed with the PC demo and that alone makes me wanna cancel my Amazon order and run out and buy the fragging thing RIGHT NOW.

Hell, even if it's just my two other Unreal loving friends playing it and bots, I don't care... it's Unreal and I don't have to go fucking upgrade my PC to run it at > 25 FPS.

It should been 40 when released cuz it came out 7 or 8 months b4 PS3 version which was superior, so I say they should have released it at 40.

I had my $10 gift card from the Ninja Gaiden II pre-order that I canceled, so I used that and picked up UT3. I have it on PS3 but find online play on that system soulless and got put off when the PS3 version was having its online issues, so I'll trade that in.

I dont think you guys are getting what we're saying about no community on the PC or PS3 version. A good amount of time there is NOBODY online. It should be good for about 2 weeks on 360, then players will drift back to COD & Halo.

There's no community for the PC version because people are playing TF2 (and I don't blame them, it's a better game). I don't know what you're saying about the lack of players on the PS3 version. There were always games going with plenty of people when I played, as recent as a month ago.

I played a couple rounds on my lunch break. I need to get used to playing it with the 360 controller cos I definitely suck right now. There were lots of games going with plenty of people, and this is just shy of 3 hours after people got their hands on it on the east coast (I'm on the west coast), and these people were good at it, too.

My only complaints are the controls feel a bit stiff compared to the Dual Shock 3 and the visuals are a little fuzzier, but only if you're on COMPONENT (Thanks again, Microsoft!). Also, a very, very small complaint, you can't customize the armor on your character, you can only just pick a guy and run with his default look. It's not that big of a deal, the action moves so fast you really won't care but I'd be lying if I didn't say it pained me a little to see that feature be dropped.

All in all, if you're looking to buy this game and don't have a powerful (and I mean powerful) PC to run it at 60fps+, this is the version to buy.

EDIT: For your convenience, here are my modifications to the default control scheme that I recommend EVERYONE use, so you can jump/move/aim/fire at the same time.

LB: Jump
RB: Weapon Select Wheel
A: Next Weapon

I literally just finished playing a couple matches on a lag-free dedicated server using a custom Master Chief model.

There were at least 20 busy servers on the PS3 version in the middle of the afternoon, maybe the PC version is dead for a reason (dumbed down console game), but it's hardly dead on PS3.

I think the "resurgence" on PS3 is because Gamefly has had it for $20 for a long time.

Darn. I love UT...why has this game not caught on like previous ones? Or at least to the magnitude the others did.

My friends have no patience with games, they just want to pick it up and get kills. This should be perfect considering it has splitscreen online. I just need cash and an active enough community.

You don't need 250,000 people online to play a game.

absolute no-brainer here... PS3 version failed because controller users didn't want to go up against kb/mouse users and great kb/mouse users would play pc version. Finally I can use the 360 controller to play this game against other people doing the same thing. Can't wait til it gets here...

Samus, some of us X360-COD4 players are going to be picking this up and playing online.

Heh, I dunno about you but I played some people using mouse/kb and raped them. But yeah, the split-screen is a very welcome addition. I prefer to have my TV to myself but if I've got a buddy over, well, we've got one more game to play online now.

I look forward to playing with all you guys when you get your Amazon copies. :) Invite me if you see me online.

Wish I still had prime. Choosing anything besides free shipping pretty much kills the deal; and with free shipping, the estimated SHIP date is the 15th.

Think I will just pass on this and pick it up in-store. Would rather pay the extra money instead of having to wait so long for the game to arrive.

Anyone know if the circuit city gift card is available if you purchase the game in-store?

I'm in. I switched to a Mac recently and my PC is beefed up but I don't plan on upgrading it ever again. This game should be great, even if I only play bot matches.

I am still debating. Shipping is going to kill me. I think I might just buy it at gamestop using bioshock as a $11 trade in value. Too bad I don't have any other next gen games I want to sell.

I've got both a PS3 and a 360, so I'm kind of torn as to which version to buy.
Their Metacritic scores are only one point different. I've always enjoyed the ability to use mods in the PC versions of UT, which makes the PS3 version appealing. But from what I've read, nobody's playing the PS3 version online, which may be less of a problem with Live on the 360.

Any opinions out there?

You're going to find plenty of populated matches either way, so here's a feature list to help:

Xbox 360:

5 exclusive maps
New characters
Splitscreen, online/offline
Achievements

PS3:

User-created content support (levels, characters)
Keyboard/mouse support
Slightly sharper visuals (if you don't have an HDMI 360)

I rented the ps3 version to try out some mods and even on weekends there are only a couple of games, and those games usually have more bots than players. I was pretty dissapointed. There are some awesome mods but if theres noone to play with then it kinda kills it. Its definitely a fun game but with all the other shooters out and gears coming out later in the year ill just rent it. Even with the huge XBL community i dont think people are going to leave their halos and cod4s for this game.

I think if people weren't so god damn skeptical about getting in populated matches it wouldn't be a problem in the first place.

Pretty sick deal, but I picked up my pre-order with faceplate at GS already. Ah well, I did use trade-in credit and not cash!

Be forewarned about the PS3 version though -- nobody plays it despite maybe a few hundred people at the highest and most populated hours. The 360 community should provide a nice backbone for a while, but I expect a similar fate for this game, unfortunately. The PC community is the most active, and yet it's equally dead. Unreal's future might not look good at this point; more people play UT2K4 than UT3! Maybe deservedly so, but that is not the point.

The PS3 mods are really great though.

I still see tons of people playing TF2 on PC.......
Key word there chief. :3 TF2 on 360 was fucking laggtastic before the patch came out. I finished the rest of the O:Box and sold it back on Craigslist. Bought TF2 on PC where I know it was being updated and the community still lies.

It should been 40 when released cuz it came out 7 or 8 months b4 PS3 version which was superior, so I say they should have released it at 40.

Yeah, that makes sense because your getting more maps. And XBL is superior to PSN in coordinating your buddies to play. You know people always charge less for more. <./sarcasm>

I think part of the reason UT on PC did bad was part of the following:
- High requirements
- High Price (respectively) for a PC game $50 (UT 2003 collectors edition came out at @ $40)
- More PC gamers have migrated to Xbox 360 platform.
