Best DoTD so far. Though the game pretty much kicks your ass with steel-toe'd boots so make sure you like a challenge before jumping in.

It's interesting that since Atlus started using Amazon as their official store there seems to be a lot of Atlus DotDs. Especially since I don't really remember any great bargains on the old Atlus shop.

Glad I canceled that UT III order twenty-four hours ago.

I don't always place a lot of stock with the 'CAG Consensus'*, but when it comes to funky (Atlas) JRPGs, I place a premium on it.

I just want everyone to know that while Nocturne is a good game, it's definitely not for everyone. People buying this thinking that it provides a learning curve are going to be really surprised.

I thought it was okay -- lack of any voice acting though made it hard to swallow -- esp. given the amount of voice acting in today's RPGs.

This game will crush casual/moderate gamers without mercy. I doubt many who pick this up thinking it's FF or Grandia regret their purchase, esp. since its resell value has diminished on this reprint.

You've been warned.

FFX was a fairly easy game.......SMT: Nocturne is probally one of the hardest RPGs released since Seventh Saga. Good luck!

And at the guy saying find a copy and show a link for $25, just watch ebay. Its seriously not common to find it at that price.....but its not uncommon either.

Woah, 7th Saga brings back memories. I beat that game three times when I was 13 - 14, as the knight, the goat, and the robot. Talk about a hard-game, with only one partner and often unfair enemies... and it has an unexpected ending too.

Nocturne should be right-up my ally. Too bad I got mine for $40 used at GS during a 25% off coupon.

I've only gotten a short way into this game, but I have to say that I'm exactly the opposite on this. I like that it has no voice acting. It's a relief. Voice acting in video games is pretty universally horrid, especially in RPGs. Sure, if the voice acting were genuinely good it would be fine, but there is no such thing as good voice acting in video games. The best it gets, as far as I've seen, is slightly better than terrible. Every game should at least have the option to turn off voice acting.

OMG! that is an awesome deal. I got this a long time ago so if you want to buy something that will definetly shoot back up to $50-$60 some time soon this is a good buy.

Less story focused I suppose then Digital Devil Saga but I think this game is the better of the two. I like the characters and overall flow a lot better.

in my top 5 PS2 RPG's very easily.

People buy games to play them not to 'collect' them. At least most people do. People that purchase games for the sole purpose of scalping them disgusts me; they just deprive other legit gamers of playing a copy of the game. I for one am glad that Atlus is reprinting this game. It's a win for the gamers and a lose for the hoarders. Good for them.

Ever think that maybe some of us even if we dont buy just to scalp enjoy collecting games the way others enjoy collecting cards or stamps? Honestly alot of people do buy extra copies with the sole purpose of selling them, but alot of us buy them because we enjoy owning alot of games or rare games. Some buy to trade for rare games later.

Nothing wrong with any of those reasons.

I'm still a n00b at RPG's, FFX really being my first non-action RPG, and every boss battle is so annoying becuase they have one-killo moves, hence making it hard :(

Way to put words in my mouth. Alot of my top 10 games are stuff that isnt rare like FFX, and on the flip side Valkyrie Profile which for awhile was the shining gem of my collection is IMO overated and a very meh game.

I never said that how rare something is has ANYTHING to do with how fun it is. I just said some of us enjoy building a collection and enjoy adding rare games to said collection.

I don't think that's what he meant.

He was talking about how collectors enjoy rare or out of print baseball cards or comic books.

Well I do that, as well. There's a place for everything. If I think I can get the price I want straight-up on CAG or TZ, I do it and get paid through non-CC Paypal. No problem. If I have trouble in forums and the Amazon price can almost give me the price I want after factoring fees in, I'll go that route. If it's rare I'll do Ebay and eat the fees because I probably will still get much more there.

Coincidentally, I just pulled this out of my backlog and started playing it last weekend. It has a lot of very cool battle systems, and a Pokemon-like "catch 'em" mechanic (only much deeper). There is a boss early on (The Matador) that is very difficult to beat, which forces you to really start paying attention to the "Press Turn" system, your Magatama's strengths/weaknesses, demon-fusion, and using the correct demons to nullify his magic. I levelled up about 5 levels (to level 18) and fused some strong demons, and when I finally beat him, all of my demons were down and I had exactly 6 HP left.

It's no cakewalk, and it's arguably too hard for such an early point in the game, but once you can get passed that point, you will be very familiar with all of the games' primary systems. I am quite entertained with it, and the combination of systems present is quite unique.

is there anyway to tell the diffrence between the reprint and the original? i heard that the very first few copies had the soundtrack with it and the later original print run didnt have them. so is there anyway to tell the diffrence between the two?

Original print run had a soundtrack and sticker seal on top.

Second print run I believe had no sticker and one disc but came with the classic PS2 case (with memory card holder).

The latest reprint is in the cheapo PS2 case from the MGS collection (no memory card holder). This one also does not have a sticker on top.

Look at the back of the case, right above the usual stuff like "Memory, Number of Players etc.". If it says something about a Limited Edition CD in italic white letters, you have it (though to be honest the soundtrack is pretty bleh overall). If its not there, then well too bad since its the reprint.

I think I can remember a while ago some Cags getting together and making a like Amazon Prime club sort thing? I never added to it, but I think it worked where members used the same amazon prime account to use prime?

I never got into it, cuz when I order from amazon I usually buy something thats over $25 for the free shipping.

Wow some of you guys seem hog-wild over this game. Is it really THAT great?

I'm the not biggest RPG player (the only RPGs I've played through completely are FFIII, Pokemon games, and Kingdom Hearts)... is this the type of game that anyone would like or only hardcore RPGers?

Hardcore. There is grinding galore and you will die many, many times. If you aren't an RPG maniac, chances are good you'll hate it.

It is definitely a more challenging game than the RPGs you cite, and likely has some of it's popularity in part to it's unforgiving difficulty, but it also has won its status for its dark, edgy, and fairly unique premise and story. Post-apocalyptic has been done before, but often not with the style and depth you'll find in Nocturne.

The SMT series has always seemed to be a fanboy favorite, so my curiosity has me in for one. Consider my soul crushed.

Maybe I'll have to pull a Final Fantasy VII on this one and super-grind my characters to invincibility. In FF7 I got all my characters up to Lvl. 99, at which point they could cast Knights of the Round about 12 times in a row each turn. Very handy against the Ruby and Diamond Weapons at the end. Took me days of grinding, though.

My God, what have I done with my life?

Actually even with a team of lvl. 99 characters you'll still get obliterated by some of the toughest bosses without proper preparation and skill distribution. A lot of fights are very strategic affairs in this one. You almost have to go in unprepared and die a few times before you know what to do.

I picked up a used copy last year, but for $30 for a sealed one, even if its a reprint, I'll have to bite.

Even FFVII got reprinted and saw its value plummet at one point. ;)

Has anyone played this on the PS3?

According to the PS3 compatability site, there are no major issues on either the 60 or 80gb PS3, Enjoy!
I know I will because I just ordered mine, Strange though i'd expect a deal like this would have been gone by the time I got home from work.

I would definitely rebuy it if I didn't own the original, and yes I do own an original print run with the soundtrack. Never bothered to listen to the tunes on the soundtrack, but I'm wondering how much my copy of Nocturne with or soundtrack separately is selling on ebay nowadays??

I was only 4-5 hours in but I didn't have to grind at all. Just fused demons and fought the random encounters (ugh).

The game is fun, it's just that I have always had many others to play.

What annoys me is everyone who NOW wants this game because it became hard to find. Where were you when it was released? Prolly playing Halo...ugh...not me I pre-ordered it the day it was announced for stateside release and still have my copy.

Same thing goes with the Dreamcast. People didnt buy it when Sega needed the sales, they buy it years later at pawn shops and used game stores, but still claim to be HARD CORE...whatever.

Right, you've shamed me out of buying this game now, I'm so utterly worthless. When Atlus comes knocking wondering why I still haven't purchased their game, I'll simply inform them that I'm not worthy of such magnificence because I am not hardcore enough, and I saw the light thanks to jikijikijiki.

Or maybe I didn't want it 'back in the day' because I've until recently reflexively associated non-Final Fantasy JRPGs exclusively with the knee-jerk judgmental types who are obsessed with maintaining the totally vague and subjective "HARDCORE" status, like thrift store-haunting 'scenesters' who live in fear every waking moment that the inclusion of someone else into their 'scene' will instantly shatter their indie-ness.

I'll play Lego Indiana Jones and I'll play this. And just know that when I get it, I might even take compromising photos of it lying next to Madden '09! No one will stop me!

Well, when this game came out we were playing hardcore games for the PS1 and N64 still. And when the DC came out we were still playing hardcore style on the SNES and Genesis...

Don't hate the CAG's, hate the Game...

I'm planning on just canceling my trial before the 1 month is over. I might just cancel it today since I don't buy games that often. I picked 2 days free because atm I'm extremely bored. I may just buy the MGS Essential collection and not open it soon.

When I took advantage of their offer, I, too, thought as you're thinking, but I'm glad I ended up keeping Prime. If I remember correctly, if you cancel it, you can never again subscribe to it. Also, you can share your Prime membership with "members of [your] household (http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=13819211&#manage). They can either pitch in to cover the monthly cost, or you'll be their favorite family member because of your generosity. Regardless, I have no regrets subscribing to Prime, and enjoy being able to purchase virtually whatever I want without having to consider shipping and delivery time. Add to that Amazon's AAA customer service, and it's a win-win for me. Hope my input helps with your decision. If not, you never heard of me. ;)

Ever consider the fact that a game that had a limited release and went out of print might have had a hard time becoming popular A) for a lot of people to know about it, and B) for a lot of people to actually obtain it, thus preventing word-of-mouth sales as well.

And for the record, Dreamcast hadn't exactly proven itself when it was released, and a lot of people were waiting to see what the PS2 had to offer before committing to a system after the Saturn did so poorly against the PS1. It's easier to love the Dreamcast when you can get it for $50 than for $200.

Seriously, dude, one of the most close-minded posts I've seen on here in a long time.

Adding to the list of reasons. Or maybe we dont want to waste $50 on every last game that comes out or cant afford to do so? Some of us arnt privileged enough to be able to afford $50 for every new game that we think looks good, and alot of us can but we just feel its silly to spend full price on any game that looks good.

I personally almost never buy a game at the full admission price, I instead wait a year to year and a half and im able to get the same damn games for 1/3 -1/5th the price. As a result my collection is 2/3x larger then most gamers I know and iv got a fatter bank roll to boot. Yes some get rare and go up and price, but for every game that doubles in value there are 15 others that drop to $10-$20.

wasn't the version with soundtrack the originally released version? if that were the case, it's extremely unlikely to get one at the 30-40 price range, on top of it, the longer you wait, the higher the price.
