First Bungie has a counter on their website, which mysteriously ends at 12 hours away and this image comes up:
http://www.bungie.net/images/games/Reboot_homePage_04.jpg
Well, at first glance this seems disappointing. But it seems too planned. Not to mention the 7 PM posting time.
And then this surfaces:

Looks exactly like the same language ilovebees had. At least, I seem to remember "module core hemmorage" or something similar.
So does this end up being Halo related?

I don't know if this is Halo related or not. But Luke Smith (Bungee employee) said on GAF that the publisher is MS, and that they pulled the plug.

Evade evade evade.
Yeah, the language is identical to ILB.
Are there conspiracy theories about how there's not capital letter T, but instead all replaced with sevens?

Something else to note. If you look in the source, a lot of the class names begin with "dana_". I just did some searching back to Halo 2 release stuff and the ilovebees, and the classes on those pages ALSO had dana_. Could be important? Why would they use that if it's not Halo related?

07-16-2008, 12:54 AM
They luvs them numerology. Seven is an important number mostly due (from what I understand) it's biblical implications/usages.
I haven't played Marathon but when ILB was around, I read a lot of info on past Bungie projects, and they really seemed to dig numerology.
Plus, for some reason, "techy" text always interests me. It's all kind of mysterious and foreboding, since it's like...the voice is coming from something totally cold and calculating.

It doesn't relate to Bungie. It's an online radio station. You guys are reading way too much into this.

That was posted on July 7th, way before E3. It says the countdown ends on July 17th, the last day of E3. It doesn't anymore.

I think that radio station site has been shown to be a hoax.
People are saying the notice is legit since Microsoft "doesn't need any more big announcements" since Nintendo and Sony shit the bed. That makes zero sense to me, but stranger things have happened.
Then people are saying it's not legit because there is a "7" on it. Okay.
It's not like changing a major press announcement at the last minute has never happened before - witness the HD DVD press conference getting canned just a couple days before it was supposed to happen due to unforseen events. Maybe the same thing happened here. I find it hard to believe Bungie would set up all their usual wacky website nonsense to get people excited for this game, and then suddenly post a "Oh, sorry, not happening" message in Earth-speak as part of the game. I'm guessing this is legit and we won't see anything for a while. Hope I'm wrong.

I really can't see Microsoft having pulled it at the last minute like that, but I do realize that it's possible. I'm REALLY hoping though that it's something like the ilovebees from Halo 2.

So am I. Although it makes sense that MS might keep a few of their cards hidden after they (arguably) had the best E3 showing of the 3 consoles.

Taken from Bungie's forums. Kudos to BugSquash42.
If you look closely (or zoom in) on the left side of the Bungie homepage, there's faint text along the vertical line. It changed between the original SI page and the new page with the message.
http://www.bungie.net/images/games/Reboot_homePage_03.jpg - The original image
http://www.bungie.net/images/games/Reboot_homePage_04.jpg - the new image
The original text reads (as far as I can tell) "D347h .4 N83L <10g>" or something like that. The new text appears to be a scrambled version of the original, with some of the letters backwards.
There is also a message along the right side of both images that reads "<subliminal message 01>" similar to the one in the wallpapers.
That could be important.

Well, the rumors were that Bungie was going to announce a Master Chief-less Halo game, which was more gritty and dark.
I don't know the complete history of Halo, but it is very well possible that the prequel is just Master Chief becoming Master Chief. I assume that the path of MC to becoming the world savior had to be gritty, and probably made him as detached as he is now.

Basically (this is from memory, so I'm probably wrong), there was a link to "ilovebees.com" during some movie previews....maybe they were advertising Halo 2 in movie theatres before it was released (which has been known to happen).
Anyway, you went to the site and it looked ok at first, but then crazy shit would happen - strange popups, odd messages, garbled text, screwy pictures, etc. As if the entire website was breaking down from the inside.
Then more messages would appear that would trigger audio messages with strange names, like ....um... "longgirl" and such (one of them was something-girl). After a while, everyone found all of them and you could put together a sort of overarching story - a kid taking a girl out on a date, some friends talking, etc. Think Cloverfield, actually.
At some point, a bunch of coordinates showed up on the site, all linked out to payphones. It would say an axom went hot, and would give a time. You could go to the payphone and listen to some recordings, and if you gave the correct password, it would give you more data to enter in on the website.
Ultimately - this is where I don't remember much - the website devolved further and further into chaos, as if some AI had attached to it and wrecked it. Turns out it was Melissa, aka "The Operator," which was a sentient program entity that started communicating with players.
I don't really remember what happened after that. I think it gave coordinates again at some point and you could go and get some schwag or something. Ultimately it ended with a fairly touching message from Melissa about how we - the players - made her feel alive and stuff. I think it was revealed that she had travelled back in time and crashed into the ILB server, and originally was on one of the ships the Spartans commanded.
Feel free to correct me, anyone. There's probably a wiki for this too.

Strell summarized it fine, but here's a couple of things I remember:
Basically (this is from memory, so I'm probably wrong), there was a link to "ilovebees.com" during some movie previews....maybe they were advertising Halo 2 in movie theatres before it was released (which has been known to happen).
Yeah. The Halo 2 theatrical trailer - when they showed the Xbox logo at the end, for less than a second the usual "xbox.com" text scrambled underneath to change to "ilovebees.com."
At some point, a bunch of coordinates showed up on the site, all linked out to payphones. It would say an axom went hot, and would give a time. You could go to the payphone and listen to some recordings, and if you gave the correct password, it would give you more data to enter in on the website.
I think if the correct password was given the axom went hot automatically, but other than that...yeah.
It wound up like Strell said with locations revealed... a select few of them actually let people play Halo 2 a few weeks early (at movie theaters, I believe), while the majority gave out promotional stuff....t-shirts, etc. usually at large shopping centers/malls.
*Edit* - Also, people who showed up at the events were given a DVD that had all of the audio clips and extra stuff from the Ilovebees game. It was obviously put up on torrents shortly after (with Bungie's blessing since they knew most people wouldn't be able to get it). I have a copy of it around here somewhere.
Normally I wouldn't care about that kind of stuff, but it was somewhat compelling. It got to the point where I was staring at the axoms updating all morning when it began and talking to a friend on the phone about heading out to the nearest payphone that would be getting the call, which was less than 5 miles away. Laziness won out, though.

07-16-2008, 01:38 AM
Oh yea. There were also a LOT of tiny meta-stories within all of the images and garbled text. One of them was this really odd fairytale type setting about a princess being trapped by her wicked stepmother. I think ultimately it paralleled the actions of what was going on in the site. I.e., Melissa was the princess, and when the princess tried to escape the castle, Melissa was sending out distress signals and crawler programs.
Really oddly compelling, actually.

God I hate to admit this, but since I read a couple of the Halo books a few years back:
He was essentially "Master Chief" since he was a little kid. He was taken from his family at age 6 (I think) and put into a secret program with a bunch of other kids. There was a big battle on Planet Reach shortly before the events of Halo and all of the Spartans were apparently killed except for MC.
I wouldn't rule out a prequel if they really do announce something today (since Halo Wars is also set pre-Halo 1, I believe). I just don't think it'll be MC-centric.

No, you're definitely right. It was originally supposed to be on PC too, I remember reading an article on it before the xbox came out and thinking "wow, that's going to be amazing." DTD files are used in XML code. I don't know much about XML though.

Hmm, Both Halo and Halo 2 were released in November....and Halo 3 in September...maybe it is a new halo game, like a prequel other that Halo Wars. All I can say is it has to be something big.

Yeah, I saw that zew. Maybe I'm just delusional and bored but I still think there's about a 25% that it's all part of their viral marketing

Hmmm, seems sketchy. If Bungie did the Ilovebees thing with the countdown timer, maybe they were planning on this the whole time. Like a background idea, that they were working on like behind the scenes.

At this writing the Rock Band one is new, and obviously has nothing to do with anything even remotely related to Bungie/Halo/whatever, so I think that goofy cryptic one was just some writer being weird and trying to seem like it was part of the Bungie stuff.

Before everyone gets too excited, I should say I've heard some people other than Mattrick use the phrase "expansion pack" so we might not be talking about a full new game. I don't know.

ummm, no. MS owns everything about Halo as it was part of the agreement for Bungie to go independent

No. Halo is Microsoft's Mario. They own that trademark independently.

The main page at Bungie is back to normal. If they really are pulling a viral stunt they're taking it to the extreme, although it looks like the message was legit.
The new Halo game will be cool though.

You don't know how developers and publishers work, do you? Not all, or even most developers own the games they're working on.
Also, the bigger issue is that Microsoft is still publishing Bungie games. That's why I don't get their independence claim.

This was just put of by Bungie:
As upset and frustrated as we know folks are, we hope it's at least a small comfort that our fans know we share their disappointment. A metric ton of man hours went into getting something ready to show and it's disappointing to not be able to share it. But, the upside is that it's all stuff you'll still see further down the road.
As much as fans wanted to believe otherwise, this is in fact, the truth and not a cruel hoax or prank. E3 is winding down and there are no plans to make a surprise announcement later this week.
Top Questions we've received on this matter:
1. OMG! The announce was posted at 7! This is all part of the plan.
The news was broken to us shortly before 7 p.m. and we decided to keep with tradition to make a clean break.
2. Why leave the splash page up if it's not happening?
We left the splash page up for the folks who didn't see the message or were planning on tuning in the following morning before the news vanished into Bungie.net's ether.
3. But Harold Ryan is only a TESTER this has to be fake!
Harold was a tester, but assumed the position of President a while ago. Crazy Wiki's and their misinformation.
A couple of far lower priority side effects of us not making our announcement are that the Podcast we recorded and the E3: Livin' the Dream mockumentary Sketch and I were filming have hit some snags. The Podcast will be filed away in the "archives" and will be anachronistically released at a later date. The video experience, E3: Livin' the Dream, cannot be salvaged at this time.

For their freedom Bungie arranged a deal that the first few games they developed would be for MS. They've stated before that they've had good experiences developing for the 360 and would continue to as an Indie developer.

Damn, I'd actually like to see that video get finished as-is now. A documentary with a bad ending is still a documentary, and would get just as much attention as it would have before all this, if not more.
